Damian Lewis (“Billions”), Tom Felton (the “Harry Potter” franchise) and Ben Radcliffe (“Masters of the Air”) have joined the cast of Brit period comedy “Fackham Hall” alongside the previously announced Thomasin McKenzie, Katherine Waterston and Emma Laird.
From director Jim O’Hanlon and created by comedian Jimmy Carr (who will play a supporting role), the film is set to begin principal photography this week in the U.K.
Mews Films and Two & Two Pictures are producing, with Bleecker Street releasing in the U.S.
Described as a spoof comedy movie in the vein of “Airplane!” and the “Monty Python” movies by writers Jimmy Carr, Patrick Carr and the Dawson Brothers, “Fackham Hall” follows loveable pick-pocket Eric Noone (Radcliffe) as he lands a job at English manor house Fackham Hall. He quickly rises through the ranks and a forbidden romance with lady-of-the-house Rose Davenport (McKenzie) blossoms. But when an unexpected murder occurs,...

Geralt of Rivia has finished the next leg of his journey, and Netflix's monster-hunting fantasy show The Witcher has wrapped filming on its fourth season. This news comes courtesy of reliable Witcher scoop site Redanian Intelligence, who noticed that cast member Freya Allan (Ciri) posted a farewell message to Ciri's new thief accomplices, The Rats, on Instagram. "Mistle, Iskra, Giselher, Reef, Kayleigh, Asse. I love you all. Thank you for the most special season of [The Witcher]," the actor wrote, along with artwork she made for each of the characters.
The Rats are the band of teenage thieves Ciri met at the end of season 3. She spends the whole of Andrzej Sapkowski's Witcher book Baptism of Fire as part of their gang, so it's no surprise that Allan likely spent quite a lot of time with the actors in that troupe: Christelle Elwin (Mistle), Aggy K. Disney dropped the official trailer for “An Almost Christmas Story,” the animated Yuletide short from director David Lowery (“Mother Mary”) and producer Alfonso Cuarón (“Disclaimer”), premiering November 15 on Disney+. The short is inspired by the true events of a tiny owl rescued from New York City’s Rockefeller Center Christmas tree in 2020.
The trailer reveals Moon, a curious young owl who unexpectedly finds himself stuck in a tree destined for Rockefeller Plaza. Moon befriends a lost girl named Luna in his attempts to escape the bustling city (including flying chases and dashing through the subway). Together, they embody the spirit of the holiday season and form an unlikely bond as they journey back home to their parents. (A screening and Q&a with Lowery and Cuarón will take place October 20 at the seventh annual Animation Is Film Festival at the Tcl Chinese Theatres in Hollywood).

While enjoying the lingering LA sun the evening before he began shooting Joker: Folie À Deux, Harry Lawtey — who describes himself as “a nervous presence” — had an epiphany. “You may never be in a position like this again,” he thought. ”So you’ve just got to give it a go and try to enjoy it.” He will be forever grateful for that moment, as the next day the 27-year-old arrived on set as tenacious Assistant District Attorney Harvey Dent, ready to go toe-to-toe with Joaquin Phoenix’s tortured clown. As if the stakes weren’t high enough, scheduling meant that he wasn’t introduced to his co-star until they were filming a scene together. “The first time I lay eyes on Joaquin, [there’s] a close-up of my face looking at him walking into a room in character,” Lawtey marvels to Empire.

Alfonso Cuarón (“Disclaimer”) wraps up his Disney+ Yuletide trilogy of shorts as producer of the animated “An Almost Christmas Story,” coming to the streamer in the fall. Directed by David Lowery (“Mother Mary”), it concerns a young owl named Moon, stuck in a Christmas tree destined for Rockefeller Plaza, who escapes with the help of Luna, a lost young girl.
The short is actually inspired by the true events of a tiny owl, Rocky (short for Rockefeller), found and rescued from the Rockefeller Center Christmas tree in 2020. “An Almost Christmas Story” is produced by Disney Branded Television and Cuarón’s Esperanto Filmoj, in association with Titmouse and Maere Studios, and with animation services by 88 Pictures,
The creative team includes Lowery, Cuarón (producer and story), Gabriela Rodríguez (producer), Jack Thorne (story and screenplay), Nicholas Ashe Bateman (creative designer), and Daniel Hart (composer).

More photos from the set of The Witcher season 4 have found their way online and they offer up a first look at Freya Allan's return as Ciri along with her new companions, The Rats.
As Redanian Intelligence explains, this is almost certainly an adaptation of a scene from the books which sees The Rats ambush a baron's carriage in Nilfgaard. It appears Ciri cuts the throat of the baron's daughter, suggesting she's heading down a darker route in these episodes.
However, this is likely in response to the fact the woman's father is among those who hire Leo Bonhart to hunt Ciri down.
The Rats have also been spotted: Ben Radcliffe's Giselher, Christelle Elwin's Mistle, Aggy K. Adams' Iskra, Fabian McCallum's Kayleigh, Juliette Alexandra's Reef, and Connor Crawford's Asse. Once upon a time, they and Ciri were going to take centre stage in a...

Netflix has officially revealed a first look at Liam Hemsworth as Geralt of Rivia in the upcoming fourth season of The Witcher in a new video.
After the shocking, Continent-altering events that close out season three, the new season follows Geralt, Yennefer, and Ciri, who are faced with traversing the war-ravaged Continent and its many demons apart from each other. If they can embrace and lead the groups of misfits they find themselves in, they have a chance of surviving the baptism of fire and finding one another again.
The streaming service previously gave the green light to Season 5 of The Witcher, which will film back-to-back with Season 4 and will be the final chapter in Geralt’s story.
Seasons 4 and 5 will adapt the remaining Sapkowski books, Baptism of Fire, The Tower of the Swallow, and Lady of the Lake, promising an epic and satisfying conclusion to Netflix’s hit fantasy drama.

Netflix was building up their series The Witcher, which is inspired by a series of novels by Andrzej Sapkowski, to be a major franchise. In addition to the flagship show, they made the anime film The Witcher: Nightmare of the Wolf and a prequel mini-series called The Witcher: Blood Origin, with another anime movie called The Witcher: Sirens of the Deep and a couple other spin-offs in the works… but now it looks like it’s all winding down. As The Witcher season 4 heads into production with Liam Hemsworth taking over the role of Geralt of Rivia from former star Henry Cavill, Netflix has announced that season 5 will be the end of the show. And while The Witcher: Sirens of the Deep is still expected to be released through the streaming service by the end of 2024, Redanian Intelligence and What’s on Netflix have learned that two other spin-offs, one...

Geralt of Rivia’s story has an end date on Netflix.
On Thursday, the streaming service renewed The Witcher for Season 5, but revealed that it would be the last season.
The shocking announcement comes as production is finally getting underway on The Witcher Season 4 following countless setbacks.
“It is with huge pride that we begin shooting our penultimate Season of The Witcher with a stellar cast, including some exciting new additions, led by Liam Hemsworth as Geralt of Rivia,” showrunner Lauren Hissrich shared in a statement.
“We’re thrilled to be able to bring Andrzej Sapkowski’s books to an epic and satisfying conclusion. It wouldn’t be our show if we didn’t push our family of characters to their absolute limit — stay tuned to see how the story ends.”
Saying goodbye to the hit fantasy drama will be tough, but at least we have two seasons that will help soften the blow.

Masters of the Air is finally here and the fans of The Pacific and Band of Brothers are going crazy over the masterfully created World War II series. Produced by Steven Spielberg and Tom Hanks, the Apple TV+ series revolves around the pilots of bomber planes in the 100th Bomb Group as they fight with everything they have to protect the world from Nazis. Based on a novel by Donald L. Miller titled Masters of the Air: America’s Bomber Boys Who Fought the Air War Against Nazi Germany, the series is adapted for television by John Shiban and John Orloff, it feels like the third entry in the World War II shows by Spielberg and Hanks. Masters of the Air is genuinely one of the best series I have seen in many years, check out my review of the complete series here.

Austin Butler, Barry Keoghan, and Callum Turner are hitting the red carpet to promote their new Apple TV+ series!
The co-stars stepped out for the UK premiere of Masters Of The Air on Monday (January 22) held at Picturehouse Central in London, England.
Here’s a synopsis of the series: Based on Donald L. Miller’s book of the same name, and scripted by John Orloff, “Masters of the Air” follows the men of the 100th Bomb Group (the “Bloody Hundredth”) as they conduct perilous bombing raids over Nazi Germany and grapple with the frigid conditions, lack of oxygen and sheer terror of combat conducted at 25,000 feet in the air. Portraying the psychological and emotional price paid by these young men as they helped destroy the horror of Hitler’s Third Reich, is at the heart of “Masters of the Air.” Some were shot down and captured; some were wounded or killed.

Most short films are relatively low budget affairs and, accordingly, exercise caution about the challenges they take on, but that’s not the only way to make them. Amongst those shortlisted for this year’s Oscars is Iain Softley’s The Shepherd, which follows the journey of pilot Freddie (Ben Radcliffe), who finds himself in unexpected peril when he suffers a catastrophic instrument failure whilst flying alone in a small plane at night. All Freddie wants is to get back home to his girlfriend for Christmas, but as time passes, in a strange world defined by bright stars and an enormous moon, he is forced to reckon with his mortality.

“It felt so present and current,” declares writer and director Iain Softley about the “The Shepherd,” his short film adaptation of Fredrick Forsythe‘s beloved novella. Currently streaming on Disney +, the film was recently shortlisted for Best Live Action Short at the 96th Academy Awards. In an exclusive video interview with Gold Derby (watch above), Softley discusses his process of adapting the beloved novella for the screen.
“The Shepherd” tells the story of a young Royal Air Force pilot (Ben Radcliffe) heading home for the Christmas holiday. While flying over the North Sea, the pilot’s plane experiences a total electrical failure. All seems lost until a nearby pilot (John Travolta) guides the plane to a deserted airbase. The novella that the film is based on is extremely popular around the world, so popular that Travolta himself had once purchased the rights to the novella in the hopes of making it into a film.

While the third season of Netflix’s The Witcher was in production, the streamer quietly started the development of The Rats, a new prequel series centered on a group of teenage renegades who were introduced at the end of Season 3. Here’s everything we know so far about the new upcoming spin-off that’s scheduled to arrive in 2024.
The Witcher writer, Haily Hall, is on board with the project as the lead writer and will also serve as showrunner. Shadow and Bone and The Sandman director Mairzee Almas is attached to direct an unknown amount of episodes. The Witcher showrunner Lauren Hissrich and executive producer Tomek Baginski are also producing this series.

I don’t usually cover shorts, I always seem to have more features to review than I do time, but I had to make an exception for The Shepherd. I remembered reading Frederick Forsyth’s novella when I was growing up, and a reading of it by the late Al Maitland has been a Christmas tradition on CBC radio since 1979. So, telling myself that since The Academy considers forty minutes to be feature length I finally used the Disney+ subscription my wife got us and checked it out.

The path to getting a movie from script to screen can be a long one even for short films. That was certainly the case for the latest Disney+ short “The Shepherd,” which stars Ben Radcliffe and John Travolta as two fighter pilots in the 1950s. The story, adapted from Frederick Forsyth’s novella, follows Radcliffe as a young pilot who, on Christmas Eve, flies home to England. However, mid-way through the flight, his plane malfunctions and the electrics fail, leaving Radcliffe lost and stranded. What happens next makes for a heartwarming Christmas tale akin to “A Christmas Carol” and the like. I attended a special Q&a screening in London with director Iain Softley and John Travolta with critic Mark Kermode moderating.

John Travolta is sharing a scary story.
The 69-year-old actor opened up about a near-death experience at a special screening of his new Disney+ film, The Shepherd, in London, England.
“I knew what it felt like to absolutely think you’re going to die,” he recalled, via Variety.
Back in 1992, when he was 38, John Travolta was flying a corporate jet with his family on board when he experienced “a total electrical failure” during the flight from Fort Lauderdale, Florida to Rockland, Maine on Thanksgiving Day.
“I had two good jet engines, but I had no instruments, no electric, nothing. And I thought it was over,” he said, until a “miracle” occurred.
“And then as if by a miracle, we descended as per the rules to lower altitude. I saw the Washington D.C. monument and identified that Washington National Airport was next to it and I made a landing just like [Freddie] does in the film,...

Los Angeles, Nov 26 (Ians) Hollywood star John Travolta said that he was inspired to make ‘The Shephard’ based on his own personal brush with near-death.
Travolta’s film is adapted from a novel by Frederick Forsyth.
Speaking to BBC, the actor said: “The kismet of the project is, I actually experienced a total electrical failure, not in a Vampire but a corporate jet, over Washington DC, prior to my discovering the book,” Deadline reported.
“So when I read the book, it resonated more because of this experience I personally had. I knew what it felt like to absolutely think you’re going to die, because I had two good jet engines but I had no instruments, no electricity, nothing.”
He added: “And I thought it was over, just like this boy, portrayed so beautifully (by actor Ben Radcliffe). He captured that despair when you think you’re actually going to die.

John Travolta has revealed it was his own near-death experience while flying a plane on Thanksgiving that first drew him to “The Shepherd,” the new Alfonso Cuarón-produced short film set to premiere on Disney+ this winter.
The film, which is based on Frederick Forsyth’s 1975 novella of the same name, tells the story of Freddie Hooke (played by Ben Radcliffe), a young Royal Air Force pilot flying home for Christmas across the North Sea. Shortly into the journey, his de Havilland Vampire jet suffers total electrical failure, leaving Freddie facing almost certain death. Suddenly a mysterious pilot (played by Travolta) appears in the sky, ready to guide the young man to safety.
Travolta eschewed a traditional Thanksgiving dinner on Thursday evening in favor of attending the film’s intimate premiere in London, where he watched “The Shepherd” on a big screen for the first time before participating in a...

"All I wanted was to come home to spend Christmas with you." Disney has unveiled an official trailer for a short film called The Shepherd, based on the book about a Raf pilot's miraculous flight. This project is co-produced by none other than fellow filmmaker Alfonso Cuarón, who's enthusiastic about adapting this story. On Christmas Eve in 1957, a fighter pilot on his way home from a distant mission gets lost mid-flight over water and needs a miracle to land safely. It will, of course, be streaming this December just in time for the holidays. Cuarón explains: "I was a long-time admirer of this story and, being old friends with Iain, he was the perfect match to bring this beloved narrative to life on film for the first time." I'm nice to hear this kind of support. He was inspired by the success of last year's short Le Pupille, which we've also added below.

This post contains spoilers for "The Witcher" book series.
Ciri is nowhere to be found. At least, that what the princess' parent figures Geralt (Henry Cavill) and Yennefer (Anya Chalotra) thought when fans of "The Witcher" last saw them recovering from the battle of Tor Lara. Season 3 of the popular Netflix series ends with the pair poised to head in different directions on a mission to save Ciri. Sorceress Yen takes on the task of rebuilding Aretuza after her mentor's death, while Geralt (soon to be recast with Liam Hemsworth taking over for Cavill) plans to track down The White Flame (Bart Edwards), Aka Ciri's long lost father.
That's all well and good, but it turns out Ciri (Freya Allan) actually ended up somewhere unexpected. After portalling to the desert and lizard-bashing her way out of there with the help of some creepy ghosts (or hallucinations), she ended up kidnapped by bounty hunters.

Sexual Consent. The notion of what it is, and isn’t, and how that slippery definition can be determined in a British court of law, the workplace and on the domestic battleground, propels the new hybrid hot-topic limited series “Anatomy of a Scandal.”
Over six tightly-woven episodes that are both juicy and judicial, this Netflix show offers meaty roles for its high profile British cast led by forty-somethings Sienna Miller, Rupert Friend and “Downton Abbey”‘s favorite entitled sister Michelle Dockery. Adapted from Sarah Vaughan’s 2018 psychological thriller novel, and set in England, “Anatomy of a Scandal” resembles a posh BBC Oxbridge mystery — but has Emmy winner David E. David E. Kelley’s latest marital drama puts infidelity and consent on trial.
“Anatomy of a Scandal” stars Sienna Miller as a wife coming to terms with her husband’s cheating. Yet her elite spouse (Rupert Friend) is subsequently accused of assault, putting his position of power as a Minister in Parliament into a tailspin. Meanwhile, Barrister Kate Woodcroft (Michelle Dockery) has her own motivations for prosecuting the case.
As one character puts it in the trailer, “Privilege does not extend to rape.”
The psychological thriller, which premieres April 15, is based on Sarah Vaughan’s bestselling novel of the same name. “The Undoing” creator David E. Kelley executive produces, along with Melissa James Gibson and director S.J. Clarkson.
The ensemble cast includes Naomi Scott, Josette Simon, Geoffrey Streatfeild, Joshua McGuire, Liz White, Nancy Farino, Hannah Dodd, Ben Radcliffe, Jake Simmance, Annie Haworth, Amelie Bea-Smith, and Sebastian Selwood.
