There Are No Saints, aka The Jesuit, is yet another “not for me” sort of film. How come? After all, it is revenge fare. We open as bad boy, Neto Niente (José María Yazpik), is released from prison when it turns out he was fitted up for the crime he’s been inside for.

He emerges to a less than enthusiastic response from his estranged wife, Nadia (Paz Vega), and a hero’s welcome from teenage son, Julio (Keidrich Sellati). Also, to an ambush and police brutality from the local cops, who, in the great tradition of US film police everywhere, reckon he can’t possibly be innocent. Therefore, the sensible thing to do is follow him around and hassle him at every turn, on the basis that sooner or later he will revert to type and they can bang him up again.

Unfortunately for Neto – and Nadia – the latter has fallen foul.

Within the burgeoning action sub-genre of fathers scorching earth to save their child, one will not find a film meaner than There Are No Saints. Written by Paul Schrader and directed by Alfonso Pineda Ulloa, this nasty thriller concerns Neto (Jose Maria Yazpi), a former hitman fresh out of prison and determined to get on the straight-and-narrow. Unfortunately, his former cartel employers don’t love the idea. Neither do the corrupt law enforcers they have on payroll. This discontentment extends to his ex-flame Nadia (Paz Vega) and estranged son Julio (Keidrich Sellati). Everyone’s in danger. Turns out Nadia’s new boyfriend (Neal McDonough) is affiliated with the cartel, and kidnaps Julio once the heat is on.

Yazpi is a brooding sort, to be sure, though he lacks bravado for the lead role. In fairness, this film asks him to play a multitude of emotions without the scenes to support the complexity.

On-stage to accept the trophy at the Beverly Hilton Hotel in Beverly Hills, Calif. Sunday, creator, executive producer and writer Joe Weisberg thanked his cast, including lead actors Keri Russell and Matthew Rhys, both of whom were also nominated individually in acting categories at the Globes this year, as well as “all the writers, directors, editors, the best crew in the universe.”

He also thanked “the amazing team at FX, saying, “You nurtured and loved this show, and we love you guys.”

Ansel Elgort has come aboard to star in the drama “The Great High School Imposter” for Participant Media and Condé Nast Entertainment.

The project is based on a Daniel Riley GQ Magazine article published this year about Artur Samarin, a young Ukranian man who posed as a teenager so he could be adopted by a childless couple in a small Pennsylvania town and became the top student in his high school. Saramin was five years older than he claimed. His adopted parents turned him into the authorities.

Mike Makowsky is adapting the script. Jeremy Steckler of Condé Nast Entertainment is producing. Makowsky, Elgort, and Emily Gerson Saines will be executive producers. Robert Kessel and Jonathan King are overseeing for Participant.

The ending to “The Americans” is meant to invite questions; more to the point, it’s meant to invite the audience to provide answers themselves. The open-ended conclusion to so many stories in FX’s top-tier drama series are deliberate and fitting, as creator Joe Weisberg and co-showrunner Joel Fields purposefully crafted the series finale to provide emotional closure instead of hard-and-fast answers.

But that’s not going to stop people from asking.

At the Atx Festival Sunday afternoon, the cast and creators gathered for a panel discussion about the finale. Keri Russell, Matthew Rhys, Noah Emmerich, Holly Taylor, Keidrich Sellati, Brandon J. Dirden, director and executive producer Chris Long, as well as the two men known around set as the J’s, sat down and dug into the nitty gritty details of that pivotal last hour.

It’s barely been two weeks since their critically acclaimed series wrapped its six-season run on FX, but the cast and creators of “The Americans” reunited Sunday at the Atx Festival in Austin, Tex. to deconstruct the “heartbreaking” series finale.

On hand were showrunners Joel Fields and Joe Weisberg, executive producer Chris Long and series stars Keri Russell (Elizabeth Jennings), Matthew Rhys (Philip Jennings), Noah Emmerich (Stan Beeman), Holly Taylor (Paige Jennings), Keidrich Sellati (Henry Jennings), and Brandon J. Dirden (Dennis Aderholt).

Russell said she was surprised at first by the finale, which saw the Jennings return to Russia without their children, Paige and Henry. But “it just felt right,” she said. “I wanted this couple to pay in some way, and they paid in the worst possible way. It’s heartbreaking.”

It was only appropriate that the Atx Television Festival end with The Americans as the FX show recently had its series finale. The packed house at the Paramount Theatre was filled with emotion as they aired of the final scenes appropriately set to the tune of U2’s “With or Without You” from the last episode before actors Keri Russell, Matthew Rhys, Noah Emmerich, Holly Taylor, Keidrich Sellati, and Brandon J. Dirden came out on stage with showrunners Joel Fields and Joe Weisberg and director/executive producer Chris Long. The ending of the show, which split up the Jennings clan, had fans all up in their feelings and chomping at the bit for a spinoff with Holly Taylor, who plays Paige.

During the panel, showrunners jokingly mentioned spinoffs casually, specifically with siblings Paige and Henry (Keidrich Sellati), who started playfully bickering on stage like brother and sister.

For Taylor, she kept it casual as well.

“The Americans” finale is chock full of ambiguity. There’s the question of what happens to the Jennings once the Ussr dissolves. There’s the question of why Stan (Noah Emmerich) lets his neighbors walk away. The cast and crew of “The Americans” spent 13 hours filming one climactic finale moment that was nearly six years in the making.

“We were nervous that we were never going to get it because, really, the whole finale — therefore the whole series — depended on it working,” said Joe Weisberg, one of the showrunners. “If it wasn’t believable … we were screwed.”

FX’s Cold War spy drama “The Americans” wrapped its six season run on Wednesday with a gut-wrenching finale that left viewers with one final surprise.

Both Elizabeth (Keri Russell) and Philip (Matthew Rhys) Jennings made it out alive, with the show ending with both them back home in Mother Russia. For showrunners Joe Weisberg and Joel Fields, that was always the plan. “We came up with this ending a long time ago, back in the beginning of the second season,” Weisberg told TheWrap.

He said the past four seasons was a matter of filling in the gaps to get to that point. “It’s a little bit of a minor miracle that ending is still the one that we used.”

FX’s period spy drama “The Americans” has officially come to an end. And while the audience may not be as used to it yet as Keri Russell’s stoic Elizabeth Jennings, there are a couple guys who are thrilled with how it all turned out: co-showrunners Joe Weisberg and Joel Fields.

“We test drove almost every ending you could imagine,” Fields says, noting that that did include versions that would have killed off some main characters. But this version, which the writers and producers came up with somewhere around the end of the first and beginning of the second seasons, “felt right” and “never shifted even as we moved forward toward it,” he continues.

For Fields and Weisberg, it was a no-brainer to have McDonald’s be the Jenningses’ final meal in America.

In a surprisingly peaceful series finale, Joe Weisberg and Joel Fields’ exquisite FX drama wrapped up by completing the metaphor for American family life it began six seasons prior. Yes, Philip (Matthew Rhys) and Elizabeth (Keri Russell) fled to Russia to avoid being tried for espionage in the United States, but the final hour wasn’t really about their national identity; it was about a mother and father saying goodbye to children who’ve grown into adults.

“They’re not kids anymore. We raised them,” Philip said, staring out at the dimly lit city of Moscow.
