Miller's Girl includes an X-rated sex scene between Jenna Ortega and Martin Freeman thats caused a massive controversy. Directed and written by Jade Halley Bartlett, Miller's Girl explores what happens when the relationship between a student named Cairo Sweet (Jenna Ortega) and a creative writing teacher named Mr. Miller (Martin Freeman) crosses ethical boundaries. Due to the uncomfortable subject, critics correctly predicted that Millers Girl would be Jenna Ortegas most controversial film.
There are numerous aspects of the movie that make Millers Girl so controversial. A storyline surrounding a student-teacher relationship must be handled with care, lest it become problematic. Unfortunately, the film perpetuates the idea that teacher-student relationships are caused by seductive young women. It also ignores the multiple power imbalances that exist between the two main characters. However, the biggest controversy about Millers Girl centers on the sex scene between Mr. Miller and Cairo. This scene caused outrage from many viewers.

Original plans called for Doctor Strange director Scott Derrickson to return for the sequel. The 2016 movie boasted visuals unlike anything we'd seen in the MCU before and delivered a clever final act which, while still heavy on VFX, played around with the concept of time in a way that largely bucked the trend of Marvel Studios' expected VFX-dominated third act battles.
Unfortunately, creative differences led to Derrickson parting ways with Marvel Studios. Fans didn't have long to be disappointed, though, as Spider-Man trilogy director Sam Raimi was soon enlisted to replace him. Loki writer Michael Waldron also came on board to rewrite Jade Halley Bartlett's (Miller's Girl) screenplay...and was still writing when cameras were rolling.

With the momentum of stardom in her favor after Netflix’s Wednesday and Beetlejuice Beetlejuice, Jenna Ortega will surely take on more Hollywood projects following Season 2 of Wednesday, which is currently in production.
Before these two Tim Burton projects, Ortega had roles in several other Netflix films and a television show as well as separate feature films. She got her start in a Colgate toothpaste commercial and then a Disney Channel show that mirrored the aspect of her big family.
Some might recognize Ortega as the actress who portrayed the younger version of Jane Gloriana Villanueva (portrayed by Gina Rodriguez when she’s older) in the CW’s Jane the Virgin. She also appeared in Studio 666 a horror film in which the Foo Fighters move into a storied rock ‘n roll studio that starts to haunt their work. The 31-year age gap between Miller's Girl stars Martin Freeman and Jenna Ortega has generated controversy. Martin Freeman's breakout role in The Office (UK) highlights his significant age gap with Jenna Ortega, who wasn't even born yet when the series premiered. Martin Freeman was almost 30 when The Office (UK) premiered in July 2001, almost nine years older than 22-year-old Jenna Ortega is now.
The controversial age gap between Miller's Girl stars Martin Freeman and Jenna Ortega feels even more uncomfortable thanks to one TV show early on in Freeman's career. Written and directed by Jade Halley Bartlett, Miller's Girl follows 18-year-old Cairo Sweet (Jenna Ortega), a high school senior who sets out to have an affair with her married creative writing teacher Jonathan Miller (Martin Freeman) to generate material for her college admissions essay. Things take a troubling turn as Cairo's writing assignment escalates even further.

Miller's Girl, a 2024 drama featuring Jenna Ortega and Martin Freeman, may not be based on a book, but it pulls its influences from elsewhere.
Written and directed by Jade Halley Bartlett, Miller's Girl initially came to theaters in January 2024, but it sprung back in conversation with its April 26 debut on Netflix in the U.S.
The drama follows the relationship between a student and teacher which gets dangerously predatorial. The film has caused plenty of uproar in the wake of its release, with some audiences taking issue with the connection between Freeman's educator and Ortega's teenage pupil.

Martin Freeman and Jenna Ortega briefly found themselves subjected to some online backlash in January when they co-starred in “Miller’s Girl,” Jade Halley Bartlett’s film about an 18-year-old student who develops a crush on her 49-year-old English teacher and enters a romantic relationship with him. But while some fans were offended by the film’s content and the reality that the two actors had to film intimate scenes despite a 31 year age gap between them — a controversy that has been stoked by the film’s resurgence on Netflix — Freeman stands by his involvement in the film.
In a recent interview with The Times of London, Freeman lamented the fact that the film has been the subject of online ire. The British actor called it “a shame” that the film, which he described as “grown-up and nuanced,” was being interpreted as scandalous. He went on to draw a distinction between...

Martin Freeman defends his new film, Miller’s Girl, from the criticism it has received for the age gap between him and his co-star, Jenna Ortega.
The erotic thriller, written and directed by Jade Halley Bartlett, depicts an affair between a student and a teacher. In real life, Freeman is 52 years old, while the Wednesday star is 21.
In a new interview with The Sunday Times, the Office UK alum said the film is “grown-up and nuanced,” adding that the film is not saying, “Isn’t this great.”
“And that’s a shame,” Freeman noted, about the stories about difficult subjects that can be tainted by association before referencing Schindler’s List, saying, “Are we gonna have a go at Liam Neeson for being in a film about the Holocaust?”

Jenna Ortega's evolution from Disney princess to scream queen is about more than just a shift in the types of roles she plays. At some point during her transition from family-friendly TV to darker film roles, the actor has become a global star. Having gained widespread recognition for playing Wednesday Adams in Neftlix's "Wednesday," the now 21-year-old is set to star in the upcoming "Beetlejuice Beetlejuice," where her character will fittingly represent a new generation of goth icons as the daughter of Winona Ryder's Lydia Deetz. Miller's Girl is a thriller film about a teacher and his talented student who become entangled in a complex relationship after a writing assignment. The film explores themes of self-discovery and preservation as dark truths about the characters are revealed and their sense of self begins to slip away. Writer and director Jade Halley Bartlett describes the movie as a "horror romance" or "Southern Gothic" that delves into morally and ethically gray characters, challenging traditional notions of villains and victims.

“I’m 18 and highly unremarkable.”
So starts “Miller’s Girl,” a drama-slash-psychological thriller that serves more so as an indictment of modern multilayered sexual politics than an (as marketed) after school special. As our lead character Cairo Sweet (Jenna Ortega) says, “longing” to experience something is the most dangerous force there is, and for Cairo, that longing culminates in a misguided crush and a politicized heartbreak with a professor (Martin Freeman).
High school student Cairo enrolls in a creative writing class taught by frustrated novelist Jonathan Miller (Freeman), who immediately takes a liking to her after spotting that she has a copies of both his debut novel and Henry Miller’s salacious works. Written and directed by Jade Halley Bartlett, “Miller’s Girl” plays on the titular Mr. Miller and the real-life author Miller himself, with Cairo’s compulsion to impress and find solace in her teacher further radicalized by taking on...

“Miller’s Girl,” about a relationship that develops between a wise-beyond-her-years teenager and her intellectually undernourished teacher, feels like catnip for the circular discourse of Film Twitter, but it’s hard to tell where a study of post-#MeToo power dynamics will land with moviegoers in the real world.
Written, produced and directed by Jade Halley Bartlett, the film is both impressively erudite and unrelentingly self-aware, a combination it bravely attempts but doesn’t quite fully balance. But Jenna Ortega’s movie-star confidence in the title role more than eclipses Martin Freeman’s shoe-leather character acting, a perhaps inevitable outcome given the age and gender politics exercised in its story — but not necessarily one that gets at something truly interesting.

The fact that Jenna Ortega won’t be in Scream 7 was a shocking announcement last month (apparently her absence from the sequel is due to a pay dispute), but there are still going to be plenty of chances to see her on our screens regularly. She’s set to start filming Wednesday season 2 in a few months, she’s in the crime thriller Finestkind (which just started streaming on Paramount+ last Friday), and on January 26th she’ll be back on the big screen when Lionsgate gives the psychological thriller Miller’s Girl a theatrical release. With that release date just one month away, a trailer for Miller’s Girl has arrived online and can be seen in the embed above.

Jenna Ortega and Martin Freeman find themselves embroiled in a heated student-teacher dynamic in the trailer for the upcoming feature Miller’s Girl.
Lionsgate is set to release the film from writer-director Jade Halley Bartlett on Jan. 26 after it debuts at the Palm Springs International Film Festival earlier that month. “Why did you write this?” Freeman asks in the drama’s trailer. “This is inappropriate.” This leads Ortega to respond, “‘Write what you know,’ is what you said.”
Later, Freeman laments, “If she can convince them that something happened between us, I would lose my job.”

Quick, cue up someone yelling “groomer!” at the idea of an inappropriate student/teach dynamic in the trailer for the new dramatic thriller, “Miller’s Girl.” While it looks and sounds salacious, the drama— about a creative writing assignment that yields complex results between a teacher and his talented student— seems like it’s a little bit more nuanced and complex than just that.

As the Marvel Cinematic Universe continues to expand, fostering epic crossovers and galactic friendships, the “Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness” is a big Phase Four entry with many special guest stars. The first “Doctor Strange” film came out in 2016, which means a lot has happened in the period between movies, including introductions to Captain Marvel, Shang-Chi and the Eternals.
“Avengers: Infinity War” and “Avengers: Endgame” complicated things a bit for the MCU, as did Marvel’s very first television series “WandaVision,” whose powerful Wanda Maximoff will return to help Doctor Strange learn more about the multiverse.
Directed by Sam Raimi and written by Michael Waldron and Jade Halley Bartlett, “Dr. Strange in the Multiverse of Madness” is bound to make the MCU even more dimensional than it has already grown to be. For those wondering, here’s how to watch it:

Tickets went on sale yesterday for Disney/Marvel’s highly anticipated Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, and Fandango reports it’s their best so far this year for a pic’s initial 24-hour period of sales, beating Warner Bros.’ The Batman. The movie which takes place following the events of Disney+/Marvel’s WandaVision, and Spider-Man: No Way Home, fires up summer on May 6.
We hear that the first day presales for Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness are the best since Spider-Man: No Way Home, but didn’t topple them. The Batman opened to 134M this year, while Spider-Man: No Way Home notched the best domestic opening during the pandemic and the second-best of all-time with 260M.
Fandango noticed showtimes selling out for the Benedict Cumberbatch-Elizabeth Olsen-Rachel McAdams movie, and that new showtimes were being added by exhibition.

Marvel has released a second trailer for “Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness,” which is set to come to theaters on May 6. Many new secrets were aired, including a peek at Elizabeth Olsen’s Scarlet Witch potentially breaking bad, and a brief audio cameo from what sure sounded like Patrick Stewart reviving his role as Professor X from the “X-Men” series.
As the first standalone sequel for Doctor Strange (Benedict Cumberbatch), “Multiverse of Madness” follows the Sorcerer Supreme as he tries to contain the aftermath of the multiverse-fracturing spell he cast in “Spider-Man: No Way Home” — which caused villains from across the multiverse to spill over into the central Marvel Cinematic Universe timeline. After footage was first shown as the post-credits scene of “Spider-Man: No Way Home,” the official trailer for “Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness” is here.
The next adventure in the Marvel Cinematic Universe sees Doctor Strange and Wanda Maximoff team up as monsters and villains from the multiverse spill over into our world. After the events of “No Way Home,” “Loki” and “WandaVision,” the structural integrity of the multiverse has taken a beating. That could be why an evil, alternate version of Doctor Strange, who originally appeared in the animated Disney Plus series “What If…?,” has crossed over to wreak havoc in the main MCU timeline. The next adventure in the Marvel Cinematic Universe sees Doctor Strange and Wanda Maximoff team up as monsters and villains from the multiverse spill over into our world. As one of the few of the original six still kicking after Avengers: Endgame, Mark Ruffalo is expected to continue his McU career as Bruce Banner/Hulk/Smart Hulk for the foreseeable future. He’s bound to feature in a prominent role in Disney Plus’ She-Hulk TV series, for one, as that’ll introduce Banner’s cousin Jennifer Walters. As for a movie appearance, though, nothing necessarily jumps out as a perfect home for the Jade Giant from Phase 4’s line-up. Or at least, nothing did until now.
We Got This Covered has heard from our sources – the same ones who told us about the She-Hulk show way back in April and that Taskmaster would be the main villain in Black Widow, both of which we now know to be true – that Ruffalo may turn up as Hulk in Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness. Only with a bit of a twist.

Chris Evans said goodbye to the role of Captain America in Avengers: Endgame, but like Robert Downey Jr. with Iron Man, fans aren’t convinced they’ve seen the last of him in the McU. After all, this is a universe where anything can happen. Not only that, but it’s a multiverse, too. A multiverse full of alternate versions of familiar characters. And this might just be how Evans could return to the franchise in – where else? – Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness.
As previously reported by McU Cosmic, the Doctor Strange sequel will feature the Sorcerer Supreme coming across doppelgängers of his fellow Avengers during his travels to different universes. And according to our sources – the same ones who said Marvel is eyeing Daniel Radcliffe for Moon Knight and a She-Hulk show is coming to Disney Plus, both of which turned out to be true – one of...

With Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness set to start shooting in May, we’re expecting a flurry of activity surrounding the latest installment of the Marvel Cinematic Universe in the coming weeks. Obviously, the main focus will be on finding a director after Scott Derrickson exited the project following creative differences with Kevin Feige, but there’s also a whole lot of casting to be done.
It remains to be seen whether or not the Sorcerer Supreme’s sequel will be getting any last-minute rewrites now that Derrickson is no longer involved, but we know that he’ll retain an executive producer credit, which is more ceremonial than anything else. Last we heard, the script was coming from relative unknown Jade Halley Bartlett, although the eventual replacement director might want to put their own stamp on things.
All we know plot-wise about Multiverse of Madness is that it...

New - but unofficial - production details raise more questions about the plot of Doctor Strange 2.
In news worth taking with at least a pinch of salt right now, new plot details for Marvel's Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness have appeared online.
The sequel to 2016's standalone origin story for Stephen Strange, which will see star Benedict Cumberbatch return to the role after two small-but-crucial appearances elsewhere in the McU during Avengers: Infinity War and Avengers: Endgame, has hit a rocky patch over at Marvel Studios in the past few weeks, with director Scott Derrickson departing the project over creative differences. That departure in itself should be noted when reading the following synopsis for Doctor Strange 2, which has popped up over at Production Weekly (via comicbook), a leading source for film and TV production data:
