After starring in the comedy Vacation Friends (which I enjoyed much more than our reviewer did) and its sequel (didn’t watch that one yet) for the Hulu streaming service, Lil Rel Howery has taken the lead in another Hulu Original – but this time they switched up genres. Their new collaboration is the sci-fi horror movie The Mill, which is set to start streaming on October 9th as part of the service’s “Huluween” event. With that release date just over a week away, we’ve gotten our hands on a trailer for The Mill, and you can check it out in the embed above.

Directed by Sean King O’Grady (We Need to Do Something) from a screenplay by Jeffrey David Thomas (All American: Homecoming), The Mill sees Howery playing the role of a white-collar businessman who mysteriously wakes up in an open-air prison cell containing only an old grist mill.

Forced to work as a beast of burden, he must find a way to escape before the birth of his child. This is so obviously a capitalism metaphor, literally making him grind away at a mill just to make enough for him to one day "be free". Lil Rel Howery stars, along with Pat Healy, Karen Obilom, and Patrick Fischler. This clearly connects back to the brilliant Spanish film The Platform, with a similar concept, both critiquing the endless mill of capitalism. Might be worth a watch.

House Party is a remake of the movie directed by Reginald Hudlin in 1990. This time around, the screenplay is written by Stephen Glover (emblematic creator and star of Atlanta) and Jamal Olori.

This is a remake that looks exactly like a remake and which does not want to fail the original, is so faithful to it that it lacks a justification for being made in the first place.

When best friends Damon (Tosin Cole) and Kevin (Jacob Latimore) find themselves completing odd jobs in LeBron James’ state of the art mansion — complete with a self-fluffing couch and a hologram of the king, himself — they jump on the opportunity to throw the most epic house party that will simultaneously provide a needed cashflow for the duo.

Plot: When a couple of friends find themselves fired from their cleaning job, they decide to make the most of the situation. Upon the discovery they are cleaning the legendary LeBron James’ home, they make a pact to bring the House Party there while the homeowner is away on retreat.

Review: In 1990, Christopher Reid and Christopher Martin (Aka Kid ‘N Play) gave audiences a laugh in House Party. Several less-than-stellar sequels followed up the funny feature. Considering the quality of each installment lessened rapidly, you can’t keep a franchise down. Kid ‘N Play may have been all partied out after the third film, but it didn’t stop the franchise from continuing. We now have the latest, a new take on the original film. And while the storyline here is ridiculous and shouldn’t work, the latest House Party is a fun flick with an abundance of cool cameos.

The 1990 bubblegum hip-hop comedy “House Party,” starring Kid ‘n Play, was a movie that channeled the flavor of its moment, and influenced a lot of what came afterward. It opened in March 1990 and helped to launch the spirit of the ’90s — something at once edgy and optimistic, infused with a rogue bravura that was made to conquer. Hip-hop had been on the rise for a decade, and by the late ’80s the preeminence of N.W.A. and Public Enemy had brought an ominous new profound power to hip-hop. In the summer of 1989, Spike Lee released “Do the Right Thing,” and that movie, with its fight-the-power core, was of course a Black cinematic apotheosis suffused with equal parts exuberance and trauma.

Somehow landing in the middle of all that, here was “House Party,” a naughty rollicking New Line comedy that was comparable, in many ways, to the John Hughes films or “Animal House.

Reginald Hudlin’s original “House Party” is, if you haven’t rewatched it recently, an absolute firework of a motion picture. Lively, rich with character, and mostly very funny, the cult hit comedy of 1990 still feels fresh and exciting to this very day, right up until a shameful climactic volcano of rampant homophobia that makes the film frustratingly hard to recommend.

But a hit is a hit, and Hollywood did what Hollywood does best, churning out one follow-up after another until they ran that “House Party” right into the ground. One pretty good sequel and three completely forgettable ones later — unless the direct-to-video installments, “Down to the Minute” and “Tonight’s the Night,” have a passionate fanbase I’m unaware of — the time is just about right to revitalize the franchise with as straightforward a premise as it gets.

It’s time to throw a house party, again, and find...

It’s been ages since I got invited to a cinematic rager like the parties we used to see in the 1990s. Today, you can’t throw back a few cocktails without having someone stick a camera in front of your face, documenting all your misdeeds. Kid and Play would be ashamed, and for a good reason. However, Jacob Latimore and Tosin Cole hope to honor the tradition of trashing a house the old-fashioned way with a celebration that breaks all the rules. Actually this is a 2023 update - as the new release date is in January after the New Year. The original film by director Reginald Hudlin opened in March of 1990 and starred Christopher Reid, Robin Harris, Martin Lawrence, and Tisha Campbell. From New Line Cinema comes your VIP ticket into the hottest event of the year: House Party, the remix to the fan-favorite ‘90s classic. Like all party movies before it, the premise is simple: a high school student decides to host a house party while his parents are away. LeBron James certainly has a sense of humor. The first trailer for his remake of the 1990 comedy “House Party” takes us inside his massive crib and even into his closet, where LeBron has a life-size hologram designed to butter him up each morning.

“You are one handsome motherf—er,” the James hologram says to the film’s two protagonists in its first trailer. “You handled the decision to go to Miami perfectly.”

New Line’s reboot of House Party, which was originally supposed to go to HBO Max, but was given a theatrical release, will now open on Jan. 13, 2023 rather than Dec. 9, 2022.

Bad news: That shifts one wide release out this year, however, two weekends before Christmas was a desert last year with Steven Spielberg’s ultimate Oscar winning West Side Story flopping out of the gate. Good news is that it puts House Party on a prime moviegoing holiday weekend, and next to Blumhouse/Universal’s horror title M3GAN. Pre-pandemic, pop event tentpoles like Jumanji: Next Level and Into the Spiderverse have proved to open and leg out into the New Year. Warner Bros. has the family pic Wonka in the Dec. 15 spot for 2023, prior to Christmas.

HBO Max has set premiere dates for three movies: Moonshot, Father of the Bride and the New Line reboot of 1990s comedy House Party.

Moonshot shifts its drop date on the service from March 24 to March 31. The pic from director Christopher Winterbauer, is a romantic comedy with a sci-fi twist, set in a future where Mars is terraformed and colonized by the best humanity has to offer. Two very different college students wind up joining forces and sneak onboard a space shuttle to the red planet in order to be united with their significant others. Exclusive: New Line’s reimagination of its 1990 cult classic House Party for HBO Max is restarting production Monday night after closing down briefly last week out of caution for a positive Covid case on the set.

The County of Los Angeles Public Health reported that there were nine positive cases of Covid on House Party, but Deadline has learned that most of those were for people who never arrived to set — largely extras who were tested during pre-employment. While there was not a great need to shut down production on the feature from award-winning music video director Calmatic, given how it was only one staffer affected, the House Party production did so anyway out of an abundance of caution. We hear that the House Party crew and talent have already been tested, with no positive cases, and can safely proceed to set.

Melvin Gregg, Rotimi and Allen Maldonado are the latest stars to join New Line’s reimagining of the 1990 hit comedy “House Party,” produced by the SpringHill Company for HBO Max.

The trio join stars Jorge Lendeborg Jr., Tosin Cole, Karen Obilom and DC Young Fly for the new movie, produced by LeBron James and Maverick Carter.

The reimagining of the cult classic, which starred Christopher “Kid” Reid and Christopher “Play” Martin of the hip-hop group Kid ‘n Play, is set to be directed by award-winning music video helmer Calmatic in his feature directorial debut. The movie’s script comes from Emmy-nominated “Atlanta” duo Stephen Glover and Jamal Olori.

The 1990 movie, written and directed by Reginald Hudlin, was a major financial success for New Line, earning $26.4 million at the box office and cult status with fans. The movie also features Tisha Martin-Campbell, Martin Lawrence, A.J. Johnson, Daryl “Chill” Mitchell and Full Force.

We’re very excited for next Saturday’s DC Fandome. Honestly, the DC Entertainment-run virtual event looks way more impressive that Comic Con at Home, boasting 24 hours of content for fans of the page and screen stories of DC Comics to nerd out over. Speed and star-power: Those are the two clear goals for the DC Fandome virtual event on Aug. 22, which released its full schedule Friday.

Over 100 hours of content stretching across the film, TV and comic book properties from DC Entertainment will unfold over a 24-hour period on the Saturday event, including panels featuring the filmmakers and casts of “The Batman,” “Wonder Woman 1984,” “The Suicide Squad” and the Snyder Cut of “Justice League,” and the casts of TV series including “DC’s Legends of Tomorrow,” “Batwoman,” “Black Lightning” and “The Flash.”

Most of those panels, however, will run just 15 to 30 minutes in length. The panel for the upcoming feature film version of “The Flash,” with filmmakers Andy and Barbara Muschietti, star Ezra Miller, and screenwriter Christina Hodson, will clock in at a speedy 10 minutes. Exclusive: Games People Play star Karen Obilom is set for a recurring role opposite Joivan Wade on the second season of Doom Patrol, the DC Universe series on HBO Max.

Written by Jeremy Carver (Supernatural), Doom Patrol is based on the DC characters originally written and drawn by Arnold Drake, Bob Haney and Bruno Premiani. The series is a re-imagining of the beloved group of outcast superheroes: Robotman, Negative Man, Elasti-Girl and Crazy Jane, led by modern-day mad scientist Dr. Niles Caulder (The Chief). T.R Knight has been cast in HBO Max‘s dark comedy “The Flight Attendant.“ Knight will play Cassie’s (Kaley Cuoco) older brother, Davey. When Cassie’s life starts to unravel, Davey deals with the fallout.

Daryl McCormack has been cast opposite Rosamund Pike (“Gone Girl”) in “The Wheel of Time” series adaptation at Amazon, Variety has learned exclusively. McCormack is said to be appearing in three episodes of the show in an undisclosed role. The Irish actor currently recurs on “Peaky Blinders” and is repped by Echo Lake Entertainment, Independent Talent Group in the U.K., and Lisa Richards Agency in Ireland.
