Madonna and Cyndi Lauper are two 1980s divas who will always be associated with one another. Around the same time, they made some of the most famous dance songs ever, revolutionized the music video as an art form, and became major LGBTQ icons. Notably, one of Madonna’s biggest songs was initially meant for Lauper. Here’s a look at how the Queen of Pop came to record one of her hits.
A pair of songwriters wrote Madonna’s ‘Open Your Heart’ for Cyndi Lauper
Madonna’s “Open Your Heart” is one of her most famous dance-pop tunes. According to Stereogum, Gardner Cole and Peter Rafelson penned the original version of “Open Your Heart” for Lauper. Originally, “Open Your Heart” was going to be a synth-rock song. Considering Lauper has a background in that style of music, having been a member of the band Blue Angel, the song might have worked for her.

For genre fans who grew up in the 1980s and ’90s, Fangoria will always be one of the biggest names in horror. The Grammy nominations are out and it’s a rapper-heavy affair. This year at music’s most prestigious awards ceremony, the three artists with the most nominations all belong to the genre: Kendrick Lamar (8), Drake (7) and Boi-1da (6). Six out of the top 10 artists with the most nominations are either rappers or hip-hop producers.
The general award categories are stacked as well (rather than hip-hop’s typical role as bridesmaid, not bride, that relegates rappers to more specific categories). Five out of the eight nominations in Record of the Year — “I Like It,...

Matt Damon is once again stirring the pot when it comes to sharing his opinions on sexual harassment and abuse in Hollywood. Macklemore is set to perform his gay rights anthem “Same Love” at the National Rugby League grand final in Australia this Sunday, but some conservative Australians are trying to prevent that from happening.
From now until Nov. 7, every Australian who is eligible to vote has been invited to take part in a mail-in vote to measure what the public opinion on gay marriage is.
Currently, same-sex marriage is not legal but the government will use the results to make their decision on whether or not they will be holding a parliamentary vote on same-sex marriage later this year, according to Business Insider.

Macklemore and Migos' Offset teamed for a stomping performance of "Willy Wonka" on Jimmy Kimmel Live. The track appears on Macklemore's new album, Gemini.
The Seattle rapper opened the song over steady trap precision, unleashing a stream of braggadocio that slowly turned into a torrent of double-time rhymes and references to everyone from Lil Boosie and Marshawn Lynch ("Cause I'm just 'bout that action boss") to Barack Obama. As a pair of horn players added a brassy riff to the song, Offset delivered the song's punchy chorus and an equally luxurious verse.

Macklemore has been cited for driving on a suspended license over an unpaid ticket.
Washington State Police tell Et that the 34-year-old rapper's license was actually suspended when he was in a car accident last Friday, when he was hit by an alleged drunk driver while driving in Langley, Washington.

The Ncaa March Madness Music Festival lineup is just as epic as the big game, itself, is sure to be.
During the three days of free concerts – which are in conjunction with the 2017 Ncaa Men’s Final Four – The Chainsmokers will take the Coca-Cola Music stage on Saturday, and Macklemore & Ryan Lewis, along with headliner Aerosmith, will get the crowd pumped up on Sunday.
Performers at the At&T Block Party on Friday are yet to be announced, but last year’s one-of-a-kind concert experience brought out the likes of Maroon 5, Kendrick Lamar, Flo Rida and more.

Macklemore brought his latest single, “Drug Dealer,” to life this week when he performed the track on The Tonight Show With Jimmy Fallon. Joining him was, of course, the song’s guest vocalist, Ariana Deboo, to make sure the performance held up to the studio version as much as possible. As a result, Macklemore had no problem doing it justice.
Replicating the music video a bit, the performance kicks off with a dark stage as Macklemore begins his verse sitting down. Surrounded by piano notes, Deboo nails her chorus when things start to pick up once verse number two hits. Macklemore picks himself up, too – the rapper stands for the remainder of the song and gets more animated as the track demands more intensity in his delivery. As one of the most vulnerable songs of Macklemore’s career, he’s able to translate the emotion well through the television screen.

Shia Labeouf recently made headlines for reportedly marrying girlfriend Mia Goth in a ceremony presided over by an Elvis impersonator. Though it was later reported that the event was just a “commitment ceremony,” nothing about this is surprising. In fact, it would have been more surprising for Labeouf to have a simple City Hall ceremony attended by friends and family, given his track record. Let’s take a look back at some of that track record now — it’ll be a pre-wedding scrapbook of sorts.

Macklemore and Ryan Lewis have been a bit quiet ever since releasing their long awaited sophomore album, This Unruly Mess I’ve Made, back in February. As a whole, the record didn’t exactly live up to expectations, but the underlying message of the album was how Macklemore persevered through a battle with drug addiction. Now, he goes into detail about it all on the therapeutic new song, “Drug Dealer.”
When listening to “Drug Dealer,” it’s clear that the Macklemore that had won everyone over in the past never really went anywhere. On the emotional three and a half minute song, he spits lines about drug related celebrity deaths, like Michael Jackson and Amy Winehouse, and even touches on his own addictions that he’s struggled with before. Artist Ariana DeBoo provides vocals on the hard-hitting hook, featuring lyrics like “My drug dealer was a doctor, doctor/Had the plug from Big Pharma,...

Writer/director Kelly Reichardt’s Certain Women bears the burden of being a small indie drama with A-list stars, boasting a cast that includes Laura Dern, Kristen Stewart and Michelle Williams in the title roles. Luckily for the film, and the audience, Certain Women more than justifies itself as a serious argument for the beauty of the small and intimate drama and the importance of female-driven filmmaking.
Certain Women is based on short stories by Maile Meloy, and so takes the form of three loosely connected vignettes set in neighboring communities across Montana. Married couple Gina and Ryan Lewis (Michelle Williams and James Le Gros) attempt to convince Albert (Rene Auberjonois) to sell them a cache of sandstone they want to build their new house. Macklemore and Ryan Lewis may have just made one of our favorite music videos of the summer. Not only did the duo enlist the help of Idris Elba for "Dance Off," but they also give us some serious Michael Jackson "Thriller" vibes, complete with a hint of spookiness and a haunted house.
