Comic books are not just fuel for some of the biggest movies and TV shows of all time. Aside from being a genuinely great medium that could enrich the lives of many people who haven't previously wandered down that endless rabbit hole, comics offer the chance to do things that can't be done on screen. They represent imagination that is only limited by what a given artist can do with a pen, and what a writer can dream up. That even extends to utterly bonkers crossovers that couldn't happen anywhere else, like "King Kong" meets "Planet of the Apes." It turns out, the world came very close to getting a DC and "Star Wars" crossover several years back. Why didn't it happen? That's where things get frustrating.

Al Ewing's "Immortal Thor" is one of Marvel Comics' best ongoing series. A spiritual sequel to Ewing's earlier "Immortal Hulk," the book has a satirical bent; this Thor will even swing his hammer at Marvel's own worst habits.
The upcoming 16th issue looks to reintroduce one of Thor's oldest villains: Radioactive Man. Not the comic book hero from "The Simpsons," but Chen Lu, whose skin glows green. Debuting in Stan Lee and Jack Kirby's "Journey into Mystery" #93, Lu was a Chinese scientist who incrementally exposed himself to radiation. Instead of poisoning him, however, the experiment gave him the ability to absorb, emit, and manipulate forms of radiation.
Radioactive Man combines two repeating motifs of early Marvel superhero comics: radioactivity as the key to gaining superpowers and communist villains. Marvel's superheroes are products of the Cold War and, according to Stan Lee, even the Norse Gods would be...

Bruce Timm is one of the greatest creators of comic book media in recent history. The creator joined a long line of comic book and superhero legends when he created Batman: The Animated Series. However, there was one character, created by Jack Kirby, that the legendary artist had some beef with: Thor.

Speaking with The Jack Kirby Collector, Timm opened up about why he liked drawing so many characters that are created by Jack Kirby wailing on Thor. This stems from a preference that Kevin Alteri, the director that Timm was working with at the time, had when it came to the character.

As the new year begins, anticipation builds for the launch of a fresh cinematic universe centered on DC characters – Dcu. While the previous Dceu concluded with the moderately successful ‘Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom,’ many films within the franchise have struggled. This led to James Gunn and Peter Safran being tapped to oversee the rebooted Dcu, with ‘Superman’ being a highly anticipated project, despite ‘Creature Commandos’ releasing first.
After months of speculation, Gunn announced with excitement that principal photography for ‘Superman’ commenced on February 29th, coincidentally Superman’s birthday. When asked about the inspiration behind Superman’s suit, Gunn cited Alex Ross, a renowned comic book writer and artist.
Though a sneak peek of the suit has been revealed, Gunn clarified that the full reveal will not occur until filming commences. With scenes already filmed in Svalbard, Norway, related to the Fortress of Solitude, the anticipation is building for the imminent reveal.

With the start of the new year, we can look forward to the start of a new cinematic universe based on DC characters – Dcu. And while Dceu ended its run with a somewhat successful ‘Aquman and the Lost Kingdom, ‘ the fact still remains that the majority of the movies have flopped. This is why Gunn and Safran were called in to take over the reins of the newly rebooted Dcu, and they have plenty of projects on their release calendar, but none is as talked about as ‘Superman,’ a true beginning of Dcu despite the fact that ‘Creature commandos’ are releasing first.

Spoilers for "Across the Spider-Verse" follow.
"Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse" is a revelation. If "Into the Spider-Verse" was the start of a revolution in the American studio animation landscape, one that showed studios could do more than just photorealistic 3D animation, and could instead experiment with the medium in exciting ways, then "Across the Spider-Verse" is the monumental affirmation of that revolution. This movie feels like this generation's "Toy Story," "Who Framed Roger Rabbit," or even "Snow White," a stunning miracle of filmmaking made by the best artists, and also the best use of the multiverse in a movie to date.
"Across the Spider-Verse," much like "The Matrix Reloaded," interrogates the tropes and concepts we usually associate with the Spider-Man mythos, whether tragedy is necessary for Spider-Man to exist, and even puts into question the very idea of canon. Unlike most Spider-Man movies, this one ends on a cliffhanger but...

Illustrator Alex Ross has created a new expanding variant comic book cover to celebrate Marvel Comics' "X-Men" 60th anniversary, paying homage to artist Jim Lee's iconic "X-Men" #1 cover from 1991:
"With the 'X-Men' piece, I didn't originally make the design. I copied an existing classic cover design that everybody would know and connect to", said Ross about the cover.
"The 'X-Men' piece is showing an accentuation of the action, where it's a split-second difference later."
"Wolverine is completing a full attack swipe and everybody is attacking harder. I added in the bit with lightning coming from 'Storm', which would be a split second of movement."

This article contains some spoilers for DC’s Kingdom Come. Read our in-depth Shazam! Fury of the Gods cover story in the new issue of our magazine.
Alex Ross and Mark Waid’s Kingdom Come is nothing short of a DC Comics classic. The dark alt-universe Elseworlds tale imagines an Earth where superheroes have become mad with power, as violent and dangerous as the criminals they’ve committed to stop. Ross’ gorgeous gouache-painted pages and a dynamic storyline that pits the Justice League against a new generation of ultra-violent caped crusaders means that Kingdom Come has garnered a loyal fanbase, one that constantly wonders why this hasn’t been adapted for film or TV yet. Those fans can now add another to their number as when Den of Geek speaks with Zachary Levi about Shazam: Fury of the Gods, the actor shares that Kingdom Come is his dream project for the hero he portrays,...

James Gunn sparked fans' excitement recently when he shared an illustration from the landmark DC comic "Kingdom Come" on Twitter. The 1996 miniseries, from Alex Ross and Mark Waid, remains not only the most beloved comic of DC's Elseworlds imprint but is also considered to be one of the company's best stories in general. Gunn posted a picture of Superman and co. gathered around a table with just two words: "Making plans." While some thought this could mean a "Kingdom Come" film is on the way — which would be amazing — it might also simply be alluding to the fact that Gunn and Peter Safran are making a lot of big plans for the future in their new positions as heads of brand new Warner Bros. Discovery film division, DC Studios.
We know about DC's immediate movie plans, but the future of this universe has seemed somewhat up in the air as of late.

Legendary comic artist Alex Ross returns to drawing long-form sequential art for the first time in over 15 years with Fantastic Four: Full Circle, out in September from Abrams ComicArts’ newly launched imprint, Marvel Arts.
The book is marking several firsts. It’s the first time Ross, who gained fame with his groundbreaking 1990s comics miniseries Marvels and Kingdom Come, for Marvel and DC respectively, has done a straight-up graphic novel. It’s also the first time that Marvel has licensed out its characters to another publisher, in this case Abrams, in more than 40 years.
And it’s also the rare occasion where Ross takes a step back from the painted realism style that made him famous.
“I wanted to present a version of the Fantastic Four as close to a Jack Kirby style he envisioned for the series as he created the characters,...

I'm currently waiting in Hall H at San Diego Comic-Con waiting for the big Warner Bros. panel to start and a poster and banner for Justice League was released that you can see above and below. It features the most of the member of the Justice League team. It also comes with the tagline, “You Can’t Save The World Alone." The poster was heavily inspired by the art of Alex Ross.
The one main character that's not in the poster is Superman, and I hope that we get our first look at him during the panel today. We'll make sure to fill you in on any details as soon as we can. Internet access in Hall H is kinda shitty.
Justice League stars Ben Affleck as Batman, Henry Cavill as Superman, Gal Gadot as Wonder Woman, Jason Momoa as Aquaman, Ezra Miller as The Flash, Ray Fisher as Cyborg,...
