Oisin Byrne is an award-winning director, writer and producer of British and Irish heritage. Born and raised in Bristol, Byrne pursued a career in music in his twenties and worked with Roni Size, who won the Mercury Music Prize. During this time, Byrne collaborated with various bands. After gaining experience working on music video productions, Byrne shifted his focus to film directing.
He pursued his passion for filmmaking and obtained a first-class honours degree in Filmmaking & Creative Media from The University of the West of England in 2015. He went on to earn a Masters in Film Directing from Goldsmiths University London in 2017. During his time there, his short film 'Twenty Minutes' was selected by BAFTA qualifying film festivals such as Encounters, Aesthetica, and Sarasota. It was also nominated for the Creative Filmmaker Award. He later directed two short films, 'Disconnect' featuring Nitin Ganatra, and 'Public Discourse,' both of which received awards, including best script, while being screened internationally at film festivals. In 2018, he joined BAFTA crew and established Parameter Films, which produced the award-winning short film 'Public Discourse.'
Byrne comes from a family of musicians who instilled a love for music in him from a young age. His interest in filmmaking started with the combination of music, characters, emotion, and imagery. Byrne is a second-generation Irish who was born in St. Pauls, England, but later moved with his family to another working-class estate in Bristol called The Dings where he spent his childhood. His father, who is Irish, is a painter and folk singer, and his mother, who is from Bristol, was a teacher at a primary school in Knowle West before her retirement. Byrne's main focus is on writing and film directing, but he also practices producing, script writing, cinematography, and editing.
