Oz Cobb was introduced in Matt Reeves’ The Batman as the right-hand man of the deceased crime boss Carmine Falcone. He took care of the Iceberg Lounge and handled the distribution of the drops (the drug that’s commonly available in Gotham) amongst the upper class and whoever could afford it on the street level. In the film, he reluctantly helped Batman and James Gordon with some clues. He was at the scene of the crime when Carmine Falcone was shot by the Riddler and was almost framed for killing his ex-boss. And when the Riddler flooded the city and upended the status quo of Gotham, Oz Cobb rose to the occasion and was seen looking at the skyline with the intention of ruling over it. The Penguin shows Oz’s rise as a crime boss and delves into his personal and professional relationships. The first episode of the show...

The Penguin is set to land on Max and with it will surely come speculation on whether or not viewers really need to watch Matt Reeves' The Batman which is three hours long. While I'd certainly encourage watching the movie--it's excellent and suitably dark and gritty--in all honesty you don't have to block out that time in your busy schedule to keep up with Oz Cobb's story on HBO.
What you really need is a brief premier on a few events that happen in the film to give some context to why Gotham is the way it is in The Penguin, what's led Oz to make a power grab like this, and one unexpected relation that may or may not factor into the story. For that, I've got you covered. Let's dive in to what you should know before watching the show!

If you enjoyed Matt Reeves' The Batman with the family, or at least with your older children, you'd naturally be interested in seeing the continuation of the story--through Oz's eyes--but, before you start planning a living room watch party, there are some things you should know about The Penguin first.
The HBO original, which debuts Thursday, Sept. 19, is rated TV-ma. Having watched the premiere, I can tell you that you're in for a more coarse viewing than the movie the show is a spinoff from. While The Batman was dark, broody, violent and followed the mad workings of The Riddler, a serial killer out for revenge, it was PG-13 and at its heart a detective story.

The DC animated universe created by Paul Dini and Bruce Timm was not only the most influential corpus of superhero media outside the funny pages; it also raised the bar for comic-book adaptations to such an extent that not even the multi-billion-dollar-earning mega franchises nowadays could even come close. The foundation of Dcamu was laid by the pioneering masterpiece, Batman: The Animated Series, a timeless saga featuring the Dark Knight that seamlessly integrated brilliant character work, dynamic animation, iconic voice acting, evocative art style, nuanced, thought-provoking narrative, and an unforgettable background score by Shirley Walker, resulting in a surreal, poignant, and unmatchable experience. When Bruce Timm was later approached for further continuation of the series, he rejected the idea but agreed to use the original series as a groundwork for another Batman animated series, set as a period piece, which allowed him the freedom to utilize a number of unused ideas from the original series.

Director Matt Reeves’ The Batman and the recently released Batman: Caped Crusader share a thematic similarity, as both dive deep into the broken psyche of the protagonist and focus on the journey of the titular vigilante’s initial days of crimefighting, in a period when the character hadn’t quite become the iconic hero he’ll later be known as. In both adaptations, the Batverse is gradually set up with the introduction of iconic characters, future teases, and extensive world-building. As the first season of Batman: Caped Crusader ended, enough hints and plot points for the continuation of the story with an already greenlit second season have been provided. With fans already eager to get into the details of the upcoming season, let us discuss key issues that will act as the foundation for the next chapter.

Here's Why Batman and Barbara aka Batgirl Don't Get Together in Caped Crusader - Main Image
How come Batman and Barbara are not together in Prime's Caped Crusader? There's a fine line between rebranding The Dark Knight and retconning Bruce Wayne's love interest in previous projects. Here's why Batman: Caped Crusader is doing the right thing, though.
Bruce Wayne and Barbara Gordon are Not Together in Batman: Caped Crusader
In previous animated Batman shows, Bruce Wayne and Barbara Gordon have always had tension. Not just in the context of fighting criminals side by side, but even in moving beyond their mentor-and-mentee relationship.
However, Batman: Caped Crusader changed the course of history by merely having Batman and Barbara as platonic co-workers on Prime. Why is that?
This had been confirmed by showrunner Bruce Timm in response to a fan on animesuperhero.com, "The Batman/Barbara relationship in Caped Crusader is purely platonic.

The 90s kids who loved watching Batman on Cartoon Network might be hit by a wave of nostalgia with Amazon’s Batman: Caped Crusader. And looking at the similar animation style and world-building, it only makes us miss the late Kevin Conroy more and more. But Hamish Linklater (as Batman’s voice) has certainly done an excellent job, and creator Bruce Timm brings back the memories of our childhood pretty aptly. There haven’t been any dramatic changes in the look and feel of the animated series, and many of the prominent characters remain the same, though a few changes have been made to make their story look fresh. The 10-episode series brings forward a new case in each episode except for the last two episodes, which mostly center around Harvey Dent. So, let’s take a look at everything that happened in Batman: Caped Crusader season 1.

While the first eight episodes of Batman: Caped Crusader were about Gotham’s greatest detective solving various crimes in the city, the ending episodes focused on Harvey Dent and Rupert Thorne’s rivalry, where the latter sent his henchman Tony Zucco to throw acid on Dent after Gotham’s famous Da betrayed him in the court of law. [Spoiler Alert] After the incident, he lost sight of his own humanity and became a slave of his alter ego. Dent, seeking vengeance, became Two-Face and started killing Thorne’s men in cold blood to make them pay for their crimes. Throughout season 1, the animated series slowly built up the arcs of various prominent characters such as Commissioner James Gordon, his daughter and private lawyer, Barbara, Police Officer Renee Montoya, Da Harvey Dent, Mobster Rupert Thorne, and last but not least, our very own Caped Crusader, Batman. So, without any further ado, let’s...

Ever since Batman evolved as a major superhero in the DC Comics, some elements of the character and its lore have been considered sacred by fans worldwide. Be it his history with the Joker, his ability to integrate technology with his crime-fighting initiatives, and the fact that Batman was raised as an orphan, some elements of Gotham’s caped crusader have remained untouchable.
However, back in the 2018 animated film, Gotham by Gaslight, one iconic figure associated with Batman had a bit of a character breakdown. Set in Victorian-era Gotham City, the character of Gotham’s police commissioner, James Gordon, was revealed as infamous serial killer Jack the Ripper.

The Long Halloween is still widely considered one of the greatest Batman stories ever told, and almost 30 years after the seminal comic book first hit shelves, Jeph Loeb will conclude the iconic crime saga with a new 10-issue series.
Announced today at the McM London convention, Batman The Long Halloween: The Last Halloween will pick up after the events of 2021's The Long Halloween Special one-shot, which was originally intended to be the start of a new story, but was put on hold following the passing of artist Tim Sale in 2022.

Although Oscar-winner Gary Oldman has had numerous memorable roles in his life, most fans will know him as either Sirius Black from the Harry Potter film series or as James Gordon from Nolan’s Batman trilogy. Oldman made both these roles his own, but Sirius Black is especially noteworthy here, as Oldman remains the only actor who portrayed the character to date, so most Harry Potter fans actually have a tough time imagining anyone else in the role besides Oldman. Still, from some recent comments, it seems that Oldman himself wasn’t satisfied with the role, and that has sparked some controversy.
During a podcast talk in December 2023, Oldman said the following about his interpretation of the beloved character:
“I think my work is mediocre in. No, I do. Maybe if I had read the books like Alan [Rickman], if I had got ahead of the curve, if I had known what’s coming,...

Written by Brian Augustyn and Mike Mignola, Gotham by Gaslight is considered to be the first DC Elseworlds story, which was lauded following its alternate take on the Batman mythos. The Batman was a refreshing change in the turbulent DC Extended Universe. Taking a different approach from earlier DC and Batman movies, this 2022 flick starring Robert Pattinson as Bruce Wayn is essentially a noir-style mystery that highlights the superhero’s detective abilities in addition to his physical prowess.
Not only did it create a bleak new Gotham City, but it also featured some of the best performances from Colin Farrell (The Penguin), Jeffrey Wright (James Gordon), Zoë Kravitz (Catwoman), and of course, Pattinson (Batman).
However, the film was met with some skepticism following Christopher Wozniak, a screenwriter and former freelance artist for DC Comics, filing a lawsuit against Warner Bros. for allegedly stealing the story from his script, The Ultimate Riddle.

Batman and Joker are two of the most beloved DC comics characters of all time, and both have been played by numerous actors on the screen. However, when it comes to the best Batman-Joker pairing, fans will wholeheartedly agree that Kevin Conroy and Mark Hamill were the best hero-villain duo they have ever come across. With films like Batman Beyond: Return of the Joker and The Batman Superman Movie: World’s Finest, both actors have proven why they are considered to be the best of the best.

The remake of the 1963 crime thriller will come from a joint production from Apple and A24 Films. It is not yet announced what role in the film that Wright will be portraying as of yet.
In addition to American Fiction, Wright also starred in the Oscar-nominated film Rustin for Netflix. He appeared in last year’s Asteroid City from Wes Anderson, who he also worked with on The French Dispatch. He would garner three Emmy nominations for his role as Bernard Lowe on HBO’s Westworld. And he would recently fill the shoes of Batman’s police ally, James Gordon,...

Most viewers of The Batman would have been unaware that Colin Farrell was portraying Oswald Cobblepot if it had not been revealed ahead of time that he was playing Penguin. Thanks to hours spent every day in the makeup chair, Farrell’s portrayal of the Gotham City supervillain in the movie is totally unrecognizable. Even with his limited screen time, the character stole the show in a few moments, and a lot of fans believe Penguin’s role in this film was perfect.
It is worth noting that, in order to bring such a stunning character to life on screen, Farrell, 47, “fought valiantly”, but he wasn’t able to get ‘one special’ prop for his character. Yes, we are referring to his renowned cigar.

Christian Bale’s The Dark Knight trilogy is famously one of the best adaptations of the character to have ever graced a screen. Not only is the actor perfect in his role as the Batman, dedicating everything he had to the role, the supporting cast, action, and design are perfect. The cherry on top, however, is Christopher Nolan and his award-winning direction.
Christian Bale in The Dark Knight Rises
Calling the three films perfect would be the best way to describe them. Considering just how well-thought out the films were, it is surprising to find out that the third film was going to have a completely different story. One that can be used for another film as it introduced one of the most important characters in The Batman’s story, as well as a beloved character from the comics.

Cillian Murphy’s Oscars win was special on many grounds, primarily his first Christopher Nolan film as a lead in their sixth collaboration. Oppenheimer is a remarkable film, and Nolan’s vision added to the aesthetic grandness of the biopic, turning it into a cinematic masterpiece.

In this essence, Murphy’s win also enlisted him in the elite club of actors with an Oscar who appeared in Nolan’s DC venture The Dark Knight (the second film of the trilogy). In this regard, it would be fair to say that Nolan’s 2008 movie has assembled an astounding cast, if not the greatest ever.

It has been over fifteen years since Christopher Nolan’s The Dark Knight (2008), and fans believe there’s not yet a portrayal of Joker—the uber-iconic Batman villain—that quite matches up to the unprecedented legacy set by Heath Ledger. While this has been DC fans’ consensus for a while now, one deleted scene from the $1.006 billion movie caused the sentiment to reverberate once more.

The sequence in question follows The Clown Prince of Crime into a bus right after he pushes the detonate button on the Gotham General Hospital. Although in the movie, the scene shows Joker making an escape in a school bus only to cut to Gary Oldman’s James Gordon, the deleted scene allows viewers to sit with the antagonist and the aftermath of what he’d done.

1986 was an important year for DC Comics. "Crisis on Infinite Earths" rebooted the decades-old continuity, and Frank Miller reinvigorated Batman with "The Dark Knight Returns." Miller's tale depicted an aged Bruce Wayne coming out of retirement to fight the evils of the 1980s, from street gangs to the Cold War to Ronald Reagan. If you've ever wondered what the beginning of dark and gritty Batman was, it was this book.
The next year, DC was relaunching the main "Batman" title for the "Post-Crisis" era, and Miller was the obvious choice to kick it off. The result was "Year One," running four issues from "Batman" #404-407. The book follows Bruce Wayne's early days as a crime fighter when Gotham City was menaced by the mob, not super-villains. Batman refines his tactics through trial and error and slowly wins the trust of James Gordon — not yet a commissioner, but a rare...

Sirius Black is one of the fan-favorite characters of the Harry Potter franchise, despite actually having little screen time compared to some other prominent characters. The love for Black comes from ‘Harry Potter’ fans who read the books – and those who really cherish and appreciate the performance that Gary Oldman had given us as Sirius.
However, Gary Oldman himself isn’t a big fan of his performance as Sirius Black. He debuted in the role in 2004’s ‘Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban’ and absolutely nailed it in the eyes of fans. In his own opinion, however, he could’ve done a lot better. Speaking on the ‘Happy Sad Confused’ podcast recently, Oldman called his performance in the franchise ‘mediocre’:
“I think my work is mediocre in it. No, I do. Maybe if I had read the books like Alan [Rickman], if I had got ahead of the curve,...

Fans of the acclaimed Batman trilogy by Christopher Nolan have a reason to celebrate, as the filmmaker has announced his return to the DC universe with a new project: ‘The Dark Knight Returns’. The film, based on the 1986 comic book miniseries by Frank Miller, will feature Christian Bale reprising his role as the Caped Crusader in a dystopian future.
‘The Dark Knight Returns’ is set 10 years after Batman’s retirement, as Gotham City is plagued by crime and corruption. An aging Bruce Wayne decides to don the cape and cowl again, facing old and new enemies, including the Joker, Two-Face, and a gang of violent mutants. He also has to deal with the opposition of the police and the government, who see him as a vigilante and a threat. The story culminates with a showdown with Superman, who has become a pawn of the state.

Poll any 25 movie fans on what their favorite Gary Oldman performance is and you’ll get nearly as many answers (I’ll take Sid Vicious in Sid and Nancy). But one that surely connected with a core audience was Sirius Black in the Harry Potter series. And it was those movies – and by taking on James Gordon in Christopher Nolan’s Batman movies – that helped him find a balance between work and home life.
Speaking on The Drew Barrymore Show (via Variety), Gary Oldman said the turmoil following his divorce from third wife Donya Fiorentino put him in a tough situation when it came time to manage his career and bond with his sons. Fortunately, some high-profile projects were on the horizon, with both Prisoner of Azkaban and Batman Begins being released within just about one year of each other. Movies are one of the most common forms of entertainment nowadays. However, the audience is rarely aware of how difficult the process of making a movie is, and it can potentially even endanger the people present on the movie set. Although the action sequences and stunts are usually done by trained professionals, and the studios assure us of good security measures on movie sets, the accidents are still happening, unfortunately.
In the history of Hollywood, many movies remained infamously known for tragedies and unfortunate situations that happened on the movie set. We still remember when Brandon Lee was fatally wounded while filming ‘Crow’ back in 1993. Joi Harris, a stuntwoman, tragically died while performing a motorcycle stunt while filming ‘Deadpool 2,’ and let’s not forget the most recent tragic event when Halyna Hutchins, a cinematographer, was shot dead by a prop gun on the set of ‘Rust.’

Batman is very much a superhero who needs a support staff, and one key member of that support staff has always been James Gordon. A committed Gotham City cop (and eventual police commissioner), Gordon is one of Batman's most trusted allies and has been played by a wide range of actors over the years, with an equally wide range of interpretations. From Neil Hamilton in the Adam West "Batman" TV show in the '60s to Gary Oldman in Christopher Nolan's "The Dark Knight" trilogy, Gordon has always been a key figure in Batman's universe.
Most recently, Jeffrey Wright ("Westworld") took on the role alongside Robert Pattinson's Bruce Wayne in 2022's "The Batman." Directed by Matt Reeves, it was a dark, gritty take on this corner of the DC Universe that felt relatively grounded in reality. So, it makes sense that Wright actually based his take on Gordon...

Batman's origin story is a tale as old as comic book time.
A dark and depressing alley. The gunshots. The falling pearls from a broken necklace. A need to take down criminals and a fascination with bats.
Bruce Wayne's journey to become Gotham City's protector has been everywhere, from film to gaming to TV. But it was the series on Fox that has a special place in our hearts: Gotham.
Gotham ran for five seasons from 2014 to 2019. The show, which you can watch online via TV Fanatic, followed many iconic characters in Batman lore years before Bruce put on the mask.
You got the seriousness of The Dark Knight mixed in with some fun comic book campiness. It was a best of both worlds that left passionate Batman fans divided over which tone they wanted.
The great thing about Gotham is that it fully embraced the antics of Gotham City.

When James Gunn and Peter Safran took over as CEOs of DC Studios last year, we knew nothing would be the same. Indeed, it didn’t take long for the studio to officially announce the end of the DC Extended Universe and the start of another cinematic universe, Dcu, that will replace it as a soft reboot. That change in leadership led to the cancelation of the ‘Man of Steel’ sequel, ‘Wonder Woman 3,’ and Dwayne Johnson’s plans for his Black Adam. However, not only unproduced movies were the victims of this leadership change at DC Studios.
The former leadership of then-DC Films wanted to expand Dceu content on streaming as well, which led to the announcement of ‘Batgirl’ and ‘Blue Beetle.’ However, ‘Blue Beetle’ was later changed to have a theatrical release, and ‘Batgirl’ was ultimately canceled even though the project was already in post-production. The chaotic adventures of Joker’s psychopathic girlfriend and partner in crime, Harley Quinn are set to come out soon, as the DC animated black comedy superhero show’s Season 4 is marked for a July release.

When the season ended, Harley joined the Bat-Family while Ivy was poised to lead the Legion of Doom. Inspired by the comic book series by Mike Mignola (Hellboy), Richard Pace and Troy Nixey, Batman: The Doom That Came to Gotham is a brand new animated movie that’s coming early this year from WB and DC, and the official trailer for the horror-heavy tale has been unleashed.
The 1920s-based storyline finds explorer Bruce Wayne accidentally unleashing an ancient evil, expediting his return to Gotham City after a two-decade hiatus.
The logic/science-driven Batman must battle Lovecraftian supernatural forces threatening the sheer existence of Gotham, along the way being aided and confronted by reimagined versions of his well-known allies and enemies, including Green Arrow, Ra’s al Ghul, Mr. Freeze, Killer Croc, Two-Face, James Gordon and Bruce’s beloved wards.
“Prepare for a mystical, often terrifying Batman adventure unlike any other.”
Batman: The Doom That Came to Gotham will be available to own on Digital, 4K and Blu-ray on...

Out of all three of Christopher Nolan's "Batman" films, it's his third and final in "The Dark Knight Trilogy" that is the most ambitious. While the first two films in the series feel the most cohesive in terms of narrative and characters, "Rise" is eight years detached from the rest of the trilogy. Marketed as "The Epic Conclusion to the Dark Knight Legend," the film sees Bruce Wayne coming out of retirement after eight years to face the arrival of a new villain, Bane.
The villain's goal to destroy Gotham is done under the guise of a city-wide revolution built off the lie conceived by Gordon and Batman at the end of the previous film. With Gotham's existence at stake,...
