In several ways, Captain America: Brave New World serves as a sequel to 2008's The Incredible Hulk as well as a follow-up to The Falcon and the Winter Soldier, but one key element was missing: The Green Goliath himself.

Despite a story focusing on President Ross (Harrison Ford) and his eventual transformation into the Red Hulk, along with the reintroduction of Samuel Sterns, aka the Leader (Tim Blake Nelson), and an appearance from Betty Ross (Liv Tyler), Bruce Banner and his rage-fuelled alter-ego only get a couple of mentions.

While speaking to The Playlist, director Julius Onah confirmed that there were early discussions about bringing Mark Ruffalo's Smart Hulk in, but it was ultimately decided that this could detract from Sam Wilson's story.

Captain America: Brave New World is performing slightly (and only slightly) better than expected at the worldwide box office, nearing $300 million following its second weekend in theaters.

The Marvel Studios movie dropped -60% internationally - -55% if you exclude China - by adding $35.3 million from 52 markets. That takes its overseas cume to $148.2 million which, combined with $141.2 million from North America, brings its global total to $289.4 million.

Profitability isn't exactly in sight but, assuming those reports about the budget ballooning to upwards of $300 million have been blown out of proportion, the movie could break even. Barely.

The latest Marvel Studios movie opened strong over the extended Presidents Day holiday, but dropped by 68% in its second weekend with $28.3 million from 4,105 North American theaters. This is not quite a bad as analysts predicted, and certainly not the worst drop we've seen from recent MCU fare.

Brave New World did manage to hold on to the No. 1 spot and has very little in the way of competition until Disney's Snow White arrives next month. The movie has taken in $289.4M worldwide so far on a reported production budget of $180M, but this is before marketing costs, and some believe the actual budget would be closer to $300M after extensive reshoots.

Captain America: Brave New World had the odds stacked against it this weekend. The movie's reviews have not been great and a B- CinemaScore (the lowest for any MCU movie) suggested it wouldn't have positive word of mouth on its side.

Captain America: Brave New World is entering its second weekend in theaters but Neon's The Monkey is proving to be stronger competition for the latest Marvel Studios blockbuster than expected.

The horror movie starring She-Hulk: Attorney at Law star Tatiana Maslany is set to nab the indie distributor's second-highest opening ever with an estimated $12 million - $14 million haul following a $5 million Friday. That means it will debut at #2 with Captain America: Brave New World remaining at #1.

As things stand, the blockbuster grossed $7.5 million on Friday for a weekend likely to be somewhere between $25 million - $30 million. That's a little lower than estimates from earlier this week but those are always a little off one way or the other.

Should Captain America: Brave New World end the weekend with around $29 million, that will be a -67% decline for a running 10-day total of $142 million in North America. We're still waiting on updated international numbers.

Deadpool and Wolverine proved to be a much-needed box office jolt for Marvel Studios, and also went over pretty well with fans and critics. Unfortunately, Captain America: Brave New World wasn't quite able to keep the franchise on an even keel.

Though the movie did have a better-than-expected opening weekend (it's already passed the $200 million mark worldwide), the critical reception was mixed-negative, and the fourth Captain America movie is currently sitting - and unlikely to budge - at 49% on Rotten Tomatoes.

Brave New World does have its defenders, but it's probably fair to say that the movie hasn't resonated with the Marvel faithful in a way those involved with bringing the film to the screen will have been hoping for.

Director Julius Onah was asked about the movie's critical response during an interview with Esquire.

"All I'll say is that we were working very hard and are very passionate about the movie we made.

Captain America: Brave New World ends with President Thaddeus "Thunderbolt" Ross transforming into the out-of-control Red Hulk. Unlike Smart Hulk, She-Hulk, and Abomination, the villain never speaks and, as a result, is more akin to a "classic" angry Hulk.

Collider recently caught up with filmmaker Julius Onah and asked why Red Hulk doesn't talk in the Marvel Studios blockbuster.

"Whether or not Red Hulk should talk, that was something that came up quite a bit," he acknowledged. "My feeling was that he shouldn't, which is what is the case in the movie." According to the Captain America: Brave New World director, it came down to "the transformation that Ross is dealing with and the struggle that Ross is dealing with emotionally."

Onah added, "The moment you gave him language as a Hulk, then people can talk to each other, and you're moving away from pure id to a more rational being.

In Captain America: Brave New World's sole post-credits scene, Sam Wilson visits The Leader in The Raft and receives a vague warning about a Multiversal threat and the "others" coming to Earth-616.

Even mainstream media outlets have deemed it Marvel Studios' worst post-credits scene. Meanwhile, the response from fans has been mixed to negative at best (a shame seeing as an Avengers: Doomsday tease should have blown everyone's minds).

Talking to Collider, Captain America: Brave New World director Julius Onah explained that it was always the plan to forego a mid-credits scene in preference of a single Cap-centric final tease.

"It was always the case that what felt organic for this movie was just leaning into a post-credits sequence that could tease what's coming next," the filmmaker said. "We wanted to tease it in a way that didn't become too explicit. This is about introducing Sam as our new Captain America.

Liv Tyler returned as Betty Ross for Captain America: Brave New World, but it sounds like her involvement with the project was far from guaranteed.

Tyler only made a single appearance as the daughter of General "Thunderbolt" Ross in The Incredible Hulk, as most of the 2008 film's supporting characters fell by the wayside after Mark Ruffalo took over from Edward Norton as Bruce Banner.

However, after the late William Hurt's return as the general in Civil War was followed by Tim Roth (She-Hulk: Attorney at Law) and Tim Blake Nelson (who also features in Brave New Word), speculation started to mount that it may only be a matter of time before Tyler followed suit.

Captain America: Brave New World has officially crossed $200 million at the worldwide box office with a $204.6 million global haul. That's made up of $106.34 million (Friday - Tuesday) from North America and $98.27 million (Wednesday to Monday) from overseas.

We should have updated numbers by the weekend as there's been a slight delay in reporting caused by the long Presidents' Day weekend. International numbers also aren't shared quite as regularly as those in the U.S.

At this rate, Captain America: Brave New World should reach $300 million within the next week or so. There's relatively little in the way of competition as we head into March, so Marvel Studios may have at least a moderate hit on its hands here.

“The Last of Us” will officially return to HBO for Season 2 on April 13 at 9 p.m. Et/Pt. It will also be available to stream on Max.

There will be seven episodes in the upcoming installment. Season 2 is based on Naughty Dog and Neil Druckmann’s game, “The Last of Us Part II.” Set five years after the events of the first season, this season will follow Joel (Pedro Pascal) and Ellie (Bella Ramsey) as they’re drawn into a conflict with both each other and a world that’s even more dangerous and unpredictable than the one they left.

In addition to Pascal and Ramsey, Season 2 stars Gabriel Luna as Tommy and Rutina Wesley as Maria. New cast members include Kaitlyn Dever as Abby, Isabela Merced as Dina, Young Mazino as Jesse, Ariela Barer as Mel, Tati Gabrielle as Nora, Spencer Lord as Owen, Danny Ramirez as Manny and Jeffrey Wright as Isaac.

Captain America: Brave New World will remain at #1 during its second weekend in theaters but, as feared, it's facing a pretty big drop. While that's not good news for the MCU movie, this is by no means a disaster.

Marvel Studios has released some new poster art for Captain America: Brave New World, and Rotten Tomatoes has announced that The McU's latest Multiverse Saga instalment is the review aggregator's post popular movie of the week.

This basically means that users have been checking Brave New World's score more than any other film since the review embargo lifted last week, which is understandable after Sam Wilson's big-screen debut as the Sentinel of Liberty became just the third Marvel Studios movie to fail to reach "Fresh" status on the site after Eternals (47%) and Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania (46%).

We thought Brave New World's score might fluctuate a little as more reviews were added, and it has now dropped to 49% based on 275 verdicts.

However, as we've already mentioned a couple of times, the blockbuster's second weekend will be key. Reviews have been mixed (Captain America: Brave New World sits at 50% on Rotten Tomatoes) and, on Saturday morning, we learned that it's received the McU's lowest CinemaScore to date with a B-.

Variety has run a piece on what this weekend could hold in store for Marvel Studios' latest movie. In that, it's said "sources close to the superhero adaptation believe that CinemaScore isn’t the best measure of moviegoer reception. They feel that way because those grades are bestowed after polling patrons in just a few theaters."

Original plans called for Captain America: Brave New World to be released on May 3, 2024. 2023's Hollywood strikes stuck a spoke in that particular wheel - as did what appears to have been pretty extensive reshoots - and the movie opened this weekend instead.

However, the release date delay caused some issues, including Happy Meal toys which arrived in the fast food chain last April. Not only did those offer a first look at Red Hulk, but a pink-haired character who was soon identified as Diamondback.

The movie scored one of the top domestic openings for the Presidents Day holiday and the biggest opening of 2025 to date. That’s no small feat considering that many critics dissed the movie. Nor were some moviegoers impressed — Brave New World received a B- CinemaScore from audiences, the worst grade given to any title in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
