Robert Slattery (born January 12, 1988) is an American writer, filmmaker, software developer, and systems administrator.
Slattery, who has three siblings, was born in Shakopee, Minnesota. He grew up in a Catholic household. His mother, DeAnna Goodwin (née Bastyr), worked in administration for the Burnsville School District. His father, Gerald Slattery, was a high school math teacher for nearly 40 years. Slattery's father is of Irish ancestry and his mother is of Czech ancestry. Slattery attended Westwood Elementary School and graduated from Prior Lake High School, after attending Hidden Oaks Middle School in Prior Lake, Minnesota. Slattery graduated from the University of Minnesota at Minneapolis with a Bachelor of Arts degree in English.
Slattery learned film photography in high school. He continued to write throughout high school and college, while working on small film projects. Slattery's interest of film began at this time, as he says 'I wanted to make a movie, but I didn't know anything. I tried to splice together the negatives of a film I shot and ruined it. I learned that film-making required technique. That was the day I took it seriously.' During this time, Slattery enjoyed the films of directors such as Stanley Kubrick and Elia Kazan, who inspired him to become a filmmaker after finishing college.
Slattery comes from a musical family. His father, who is a guitarist, bought him his first guitar at age 12. Slattery became a proficient electric guitarist with aspirations of becoming a musician like Jimi Hendrix or Frank Zappa. This led to a brief career as a guitarist for various bands at age 19, involving travel to cities such as Nashville and Chicago.
Upon moving to Los Angeles, Slattery worked various jobs as an electrician's apprentice, graphic designer, web developer, and proposal writer. In February 2016, he watched a VR demonstration that inspired him to become a software developer.
After several years of studying software development on his own, Robert began to work on embedded systems, desktop applications, video games, as well as websites. He also works and does research into virtualization and cloud computing, especially as they pertain to blockchain technologies.
