We hate to be the bearer of bad news, but we've just learned of a new show cancellation. This teen series was loved by many, but unfortunately, it won't be returning for another season. Netflix has reportedly canceled the teen drama Surviving Summer. There will not be a Surviving Summer season 3 like many had hoped.

Are we shocked by this news? Honestly, not all. The second season was released on Netflix back in September 2023. That was over a year ago, and we hadn't heard a peep about the show's future until recently. The news came from one of the stars of the show. When it comes to filming back-to-back projects, one could do worse than swapping out Byron Bay for the Great Ocean Road.

Such was the scenario for young actress Savannah La Rain, who went from shooting Tyler Atkins’ debut feature Bosch and Rockit with Luke Hemsworth in the second half of 2020 to riding waves in regional Victoria earlier this year for upcoming Netflix young adult series Surviving Summer.

The 16-year-old told If the transition was a case of art imitating life.

“I loved how could just tell the vibe [with Surviving Summer] was so Australian with the surfing and the lingo,” she said.

“Having just come from Byron, where I had been experiencing the surf culture, it was very cool to see it in a television show and it felt very relatable.

“I could just tell it was something so special that I wanted to be a part of.”

Netflix and Germany’s Zdfe have co-commissioned a 10-episode teen surfing drama from Werner Film Productions, set to get underway in Victoria later this month.

Titled Surviving Summer, the series has been created by Joanna Werner and Josh Mapleston.

Sky Katz (Raven’s Home) stars as the titular character of Summer, a fierce Brooklyn teen who is sent Down Under to live with family friends in a tiny coastal town on the Great Ocean Road.

Starring alongside are Brazilian rising star João Gabriel Marinho (Malhação), Kai Lewins, Savannah La Rain and in her first foray into acting, five-time Queensland Junior State Surf Champion Lilliana Bowrey.

Sky Katz (previously known as Skylar Katz) (Disney Channel’s “Raven’s Home”) stars as the titular character Summer, a fierce Brooklyn teen who is sent ‘Down Under’ to live with family friends in a coastal town on the Great Ocean Road. Luke Hemsworth is playing the lead opposite teenager Rasmus King in Bosch and Rockit, writer-director Tyler Atkins’ debut feature which follows a father and son who are pursued by crooked cops.

Now shooting in Byron Bay, the privately-financed road movie/drama is a spin-off from Atkins’ 2018 short which starred King and Aaron Jeffery.

Deeper Water Pictures’ John Schwarz, who joined the project several weeks ago at the suggestion of Dop Ben Nott, is producing with Cathy Flannery.

Based on a true story, the plot follows Hemsworth’s Bosch and King’s 13-year-old Rockit as they embark on a late summer trip along the Australian coast.

Rockit believes he is on a magical holiday with his dad until he sees the cops are in pursuit. On the run, they struggle with numerous setbacks with hope, courage and determination.

Time to let the monsters loose. Here There Be Monsters is a new horror short film made by Australian filmmaker Drew Macdonald. The film originally played at 50+ festivals around the world including Sitges, Hollyshorts, Screamfest and many more genre favs, and has won multiple awards along the way. To escape incessant bullying on the bus ride home, a young girl falls asleep, only to wake up trapped at an empty bus yard, with something fearsome lurking outside. Drew describes the short as "a throwback creature feature mixed with a contemporary story about bullying." The monster design in this is quite gnarly, which adds to the eeriness of the whole thing. Here There Be Monsters stars Savannah Foran McDaniel as Elki; plus Jordan Small, Brad McMurray, Toby Barron as the monster. Aside from the creature, it's impressive there's no dialogue in this short yet you can understand exactly what's going on and all the emotions.
