Exclusive: Mubi will be rolling out the movie Magic Farm starring Chloë Sevigny, Alex Wolff and Camila del Campo exclusively April 25 in New York City at the Angelika with a further expansion May 2 in Los Angeles, San Francisco, Boston, Chicago and Washington, DC.

Mubi will also platform the pic in the top 15 markets on May 9 including Dallas, Houston, Austin, Seattle, Minneapolis, Atlanta, Miami and Portland, with further breaks in NYC and L.A. before going nationwide May 16. The UK will also debut May 16.

We first told you that Mubi acquired the Amalia Ulman-directed movie ahead of its global premiere at this year’s Sundance Film Festival. The distributor is handling distribution in the UK and U.S. The Match Factory is selling international territories.

Remember Vice News? It was like CNN with neck tattoos and no 401K. The now-defunct outlet sent its platoon of journalists (who could have moonlighted as American Apparel models) all over the globe to bring you the stories traditional media was just too boring to cover. It was Williamsburg-based world news that spawned countless copycats and influencers who strive to deliver the same type of personality-based interest stories in its wake.

In Magic Farm, Amalia Ulman takes aim at this kind of hipster media and the eccentric characters that gravitate towards it. But the larger scope of Ulman’s second feature stretches the writer-director a bit thin, lacking the cohesion and focus of her debut El Planeta.

In search of Super Carlitos, an Internet sensation who performs wearing bunny ears, a production crew from the Creative Lab Network travels to San Cristobal, Argentina. The problem: this San Cristobal is in an entirely different country.

Cumbia music is the one grounding constant in Argentine-born Spanish filmmaker Amalia Ulman’s sophomore effort “Magic Farm,” a formally radical, biting satire about odious, privileged Americans adrift in a remote Argentine rural town. The group of foreigners works for a Vice-type media company dedicated to exploiting offbeat stories from around the world for sensationalist video content. The latest target for their culture-mining operation is Super Carlitos, a whimsical singer known for wearing bunny ears, residing in the town of San Cristobal. Unbeknown to useless producer Jeff (Alex Wolff of “Hereditary” fame), a place with that name could be anywhere in Latin America.

With the same uncomfortably dry sense of humor she exhibited in her debut feature “El Planeta” — where she and her real mother played a financially strapped mother-daughter duo — Ulman casts herself as Elena, the cameraperson and interpreter. Alex Wolff is praising his “Magic Farm” co-star Chloë Sevigny for setting the tone for the satirical feature.

Wolff, who stars alongside Sevigny, Simon Rex, Camila del Campo, and Joe Apollonio in the film, said during the IndieWire Studio at Sundance, presented by Dropbox, that Sevigny is one of his acting inspirations. Thus, he understandably was “nervous” to act opposite her on the indie.

“Magic Farm” centers on a Vice News-esque documentary film crew led by Sevigny’s character. The crew travels to Argentina to expose the effects of pesticides on people; Amalia Ulman wrote and directed the film.

When asked by IndieWire’s editorial director Kate Erbland how the two onscreen generations, represented by Sevigny and Rex’s respective characters and del Campo and Wolff’s roles, impacted the making of the film, Wolff credited Sevigny’s three decades in Hollywood as key to making “Magic Farm” work.

New York-based writer-director Amalia Ulman returns to her Argentine roots for her second feature, and as in the Spain-set El Planeta, she’s keenly interested in the boundless human capacity for living in a state of denial. Revolving around a group of supposed journalists — well, content creators — who spend the entire movie missing a huge story right under their noses, Magic Farm features a stupendous cast fully in sync with Ulman’s deadpan absurdity. The actors effortlessly entwine the droll and the ingenuous, but as Ulman juggles more characters and more plot angles than in her first movie, there isn’t necessarily more payoff.

Exclusive: After co-producing and co-financing Magic Farm, the latest film from writer-director Amalia Ulman (El Planeta), which is set to world premiere in the Premieres section of the 2025 Sundance Film Festival, Mubi has locked down distribution rights to the dark comedy in North America and the UK.

They’ll release the ensemble film, featuring Chloë Sevigny (Monsters), Alex Wolff (A Quiet Place: Day One), Simon Rex (Red Rocket), and more, in 2025.

In Magic Farm, a media crew mistakenly ends up in the wrong country while trying to profile a musician. As they collaborate with locals to create a viral trend, relationships form amid an unfolding health crisis. Joe Apollonio (Betty), Ulman and Camila del Campo also star.

The film is produced by Spacemaker Productions, Mubi, and Rei Cine and co-financed by Spacemaker Productions, Mubi, and Tango Entertainment. Producers included Alex Hughes, Eugene Kotlyarenko, and Riccardo Maddalosso of Spacemaker Productions. Robert Pattinson’s production company Icki Eneo Arlo was among the executive producers, with The Match Factory handling international sales for the title.

Stated Ulman, “I couldn’t be more excited to have partnered with Mubi on the production of Magic Farm. This was a project that required taking risks, and their team was so supportive in realizing our vision.”

Recently, Mubi released Coralie Fargeat’s acclaimed body horror pic The Substance, starring Demi Moore and Margaret Qualley, which won Fargeat the prize for Best Screenplay at Cannes and is one of this year’s big awards contenders. Among the company’s recent productions is Kelly Reichardt’s upcoming The Mastermind starring Josh O’Connor.

Amandla Stenberg (Bodies Bodies Bodies) leads the genre-bending werewolf movie My Animal, available now in select theaters and VOD, and the musically inclined actor also wrote and performed a new single “Wicked Animal” now available to stream.

The new single is available to listen to now, which Stenberg wrote, produced and plays everything on the track.

Stenberg says of the track in a press release, “I wrote this track from the bathroom of a hotel in a tiny town situated between mountains of snow in northern Ontario during the filming of our movie My Animal. Sometimes my costar Bobbi and I wandered up and down the icy block that made up downtown, but most of the time we found solace from the cold in our room together, singing on handheld karaoke mics. This song came from that place of deep isolation and playfulness.”

It’s hard to believe that it’s been three years since I was last in Park City to enjoy the Sundance Film Festival in person, which is why this writer is beyond thrilled to be headed back to Utah next week to partake in their amazing lineup of films once again. Today they announced the comprehensive slate of independent films selected from the fest that will take place January 19–29, 2023, in person in Park City, Salt Lake City, and the Sundance Resort, along with a selection of films available online across the country January 24–29, 2023.
