In a year marked by personal losses as well as national strife, I’ve found myself thinking a lot about time. Strange how hours can feel eternal, days brief and weeks like they are bleeding into each other so that it’s hard to tell where one ends and the other begins.

I had all that in mind while compiling my favorite arts and culture picks from this year. Some of these works consider time on a personal level, like when you pick up a book and can’t put it down. Others ask how much time we have as a society considering the impact of climate change on vulnerable communities. A handful think of time more linearly — offering reflections on the past so we might better understand the future.

Here are some works, in alphabetical order, that rearranged time for me:

The Broadway revival of An Enemy of the People, starring Jeremy Strong and Michael Imperioli, has recouped its $5.5 million capitalization.

The milestone, announced by producers Seaview, Patrick Catullo and Brad Pitt’s Plan B, comes after only about four months on Broadway, with the play breaking the Circle in the Square’s box office record (of $917,008) 16 times. The production began previews at the Circle in the Square Theatre on Feb. 27 and is set to close June 23.

The production, which opened March 18, has maintained more than 100 percent capacity for the entirety of its run and has grossed more than $1 million most weeks. The average ticket price for the show has generally been around $150, which puts it somewhat on the higher end within the industry, but still well below average ticket prices commanded by shows such as Merrily We Roll Along, which announced the recoupment of its $12 million capitalization in March after about six months on Broadway.

Exclusive: Republic Pictures has acquired North American rights to Rob Peace, the sophomore feature from actor-turned-filmmaker Chiwetel Ejiofor (The Boy Who Harnessed the Wind), in which he stars opposite Jay Will, Mary J. Blige and Camila Cabello.

World premiering to solid reviews at this year’s Sundance Film Festival, the film will be released in 500 theaters on August 2.

Written and directed by Ejiofor, Rob Peace is based on a bestselling work of non-fiction by Jeff Hobbs. The film tells the story of Robert Peace (Will), who grew up in an impoverished section of Newark and later graduated from Yale on scholarship. Peace led a dual life in academia, earning degrees in molecular biophysics and biochemistry while also selling marijuana to aid his father who he believed was unjustly imprisoned for murder.

Pic’s producers are Antoine Fuqua, Rebecca Hobbs, Kat Samick, Andrea Calderwood, Jeffrey Soros, Alex Kurtzman, Jenny Lumet and Simon Horsman.

The Drama League Awards unveiled their slate of winners at an in-person ceremony on Friday, May 17. The event was hosted by Frank Dilella at the Ziegfeld Ballroom, where attendees toasted the best of Broadway and Off-Bradway.

The biggest winner of the day was Sarah Paulson, who claimed the coveted Distinguished Performance Award for her fiery role in “Appropriate.” That play, by Branden Jacobs-Jenkins, also took home the League’s trophy for Best Revival of a Play.

The Distinguished Performance Award is unique in that a performer may only win the award once in their career. After prevailing, they are never eligible again. The category is also a massive catch-all race that includes actors of all genders, roles of all sizes, and both Broadway and Off-Broadway productions. This year, 54 thespians were included as nominees.

The nominees for the 2024 Drama League Awards were announced April 22, 2024, by Vanessa Williams and past Drama League winner Bebe Neuwirth. Winners will be announced during the 90th Annual Drama League Awards ceremony at the Ziegfeld Ballroom on Friday, May 17.

These kudos honor both Broadway and Off-Broadway productions and are famous for their catch-all acting category, the Distinguished Performance Award. An actor can only win it once in their career. After they have won, they can never be nominated again. This year, a whopping 54 performers are nominated.

The critically-acclaimed hit Broadway revival of An Enemy of the People has announced a one-week extension at Circle in the Square Theatre. The Ibsen revival will now play through Sunday, June 23, rather than the previously announced June 16.

Producers said today the extension is due to popular demand. The production has done exceedingly well at the box office since its March 18 opening, routinely selling out the Circle in the Square venue. Last week, the play grossed $1,051,306 with standing room only crowds.

Tickets for this extra week are now on sale. A limited number of $39 tickets will be available via digital lottery, subject to availability.

This article contains spoilers about the 2024 Broadway production of “An Enemy of the People.”

There will likely be few scenes this Broadway season more harrowing than the climax of Sam Gold’s “An Enemy of the People,” in which a town hall meeting called by Dr. Thomas Stockmann devolves into verbal and physical assault. In the aftermath of the scene’s brutality against the Norwegian doctor, who warns his community that their waters are contaminated, actor Jeremy Strong emerges from a crouched position on the stage floor in the Circle in the Square Theatre, where he has huddled and shrunk his body down to withstand a torrent of blows. It is a visceral moment of live theatre, one that the actor commits to wholeheartedly and that the Tony Awards should nominate.

What leads up to that frightening display of ignorance and animus is made all the richer by Strong’s performance.

When climate protesters disrupted a performance of the An Enemy of the People earlier this month, Victoria Pedretti seesawed between siding with the activists or the agitated audience members. The play had reached a crescendo: The town’s doctor, Dr. Stockmann, prepared to discuss a potential pathogen in the town’s ground water before a dissenting crowd, when Extinction Rebellion NYC members captured the audience’s attention crying “no theater on a dead planet.”

It has only been 12 years since New York audiences saw a production of Henrik Ibsen’s classic nineteenth-century play “An Enemy of the People.” But unlike that last staging at the Manhattan Theatre Club, the version that just opened at Circle in the Square Theatre on Mar. 18 is a departure, thanks to the vision of director Sam Gold and a new adaptation of the text by Pulitzer Prize finalist Amy Herzog. “Enemy” runs through June 16, the day of the 2024 Tony Awards.

Gold has attracted star-wattage to his remounting of the Ibsen play with Jeremy Strong in the title role of Dr. Thomas Stockmann, who uncovers that the spas that have made his Norwegian town a booming tourist destination are in fact highly contaminated and will cause many visitors to get sick and potentially die. “No theater on a dead planet!” is a chanted refrain that does not appear in Henrik Ibsen’s 1882 play An Enemy of a People. Nor is it part of the 2024 English adaptation by playwright Amy Herzog, who’s preserved the play’s late-19th-century setting (and who also skillfully adapted A Doll’s House last season). But it was perhaps the most resonant line in the reviewed performance of this production, which, as has now been widely reported, was interrupted by a trio of protestors from the climate activism group Extinction Rebellion.

If you see An Enemy of the People—which, to be clear, you should—chances are that the disruptors will stay home for your performance. But this particular protest was so shrewdly timed, so thematically linked, as to have rendered it impossible for the audience to ascertain whether it was part of the production or not. It’s tough...

In a clever trick that pulls us into the community about to witness the spectacular downfall of the public figure crusading for truth at the center of An Enemy of the People, a bar descends from above during the pause between acts, with theatergoers filing onto the stage to be served shots of aquavit while musicians and singers perform traditional Norwegian songs. Several audience members stay seated around the periphery when the action resumes. The house lights also remain up, giving us no escape from our complicity as town physician Dr. Thomas Stockmann, played with bristling intensity by Jeremy Strong, is pilloried with ridicule that escalates into physical violence.

Sam Gold’s crackling production up to that point has been deceptively traditional, handsomely staged in the round at the Circle in the Square, with a first act that sets the scene for festering conflict in the warmth and cozy domesticity of Stockmann’s home,...

Premiering earlier this year at Berlinale, John Trengove’s The Wound follow-up Manodrome sets Jesse Eisenberg and Adrien Brody in a Fight Club-esque tale following a man wrestling with his own demons who gets welcomed into a mysterious family of men. "Take back your power, Ralph!!" Lionsgate has revealed an official trailer for a film called Manodrome, an indie creation from South African filmmaker John Trengove (director of The Wound previously). This premiered at the Berlin Film Festival to mostly mixed to positive reviews - its a very slick film, although it doesn't particularly stand out much. Conflicted about his girlfriend's pregnancy, Ralphie's life spirals out of control when he meets a mysterious family of men. Manodrome is a clever criticism of toxic masculinity and fragile men who are obsessed with being men (you know the ones). Jesse Eisenberg stars as one of these guys who falls into this kind of cult for men, run by Adrien Brody. Then it gets really crazy... AMC has cancelled another show as it was being produced. Last month, it was revealed that the second season renewal of Moonhaven had been rescinded. Yesterday, we reported that the cable network had pulled the plug on Invitation to a Bonfire midway through its filming and had cancelled plans to air the second season of 61st Street. Now, comes word that Demascus has been axed as well.

AMC has opted not to move forward with the series “Demascus,” Variety has confirmed.

The show was ordered to series at the cabler back in February 2022 and had completed production but will no longer air on AMC. The news comes after Variety exclusively reported that AMC was also not proceeding with Season 2 of the legal drama “61st Street” or with its planned series adaptation of the novel “Invitation to a Bonfire.”

The decisions were made as part of cost cutting measures announced by AMC in December 2022, in which the company stated it would take write-downs for up to 475 million. That figure included 400 million for “strategic programming assessments” and 75 million for “organizational restructuring costs,” per an SEC filing. Just prior to that announcement, AMC Networks CEO Christina Spade abruptly departed the company after less than three months in the role. James L. Dolan was then named interim executive chairman by the board of directors shortly thereafter.

Bad Boys actor Martin Lawrence is set for a key recurring role opposite Okieriete Onaodowan AMC’s Demascus, the half-hour comedic sci-fi series from playwright Tearrance Arvelle Chisholm and AMC Studios. The six-episode series is set to premiere next year on AMC and AMC+.

Created by Chisholm, Demascus follows Demascus (Onaodowan), a 33-year-old Black man who goes on a journey of self-discovery using an innovative new technology that allows him to experience different versions of his own life. Martin Lawrence is headed back to television.

The comedian and actor has joined AMC’s upcoming series Demascus in a recurring role. He’ll appear in three of the show’s six episodes as the title character’s (Okieriete Onaodowan) Uncle Forty.

The part will mark Lawrence’s first TV role since the 2014 sitcom Partners, where he starred with Kelsey Grammer.

Demascus stars Onaodowan (Station 19, Hamilton) as a 33-year-old Black man who goes on a journey of self-discovery using an innovative new technology that allows him to experience different versions of his own life. The series will follow the main character through those alternate realities as well as in his everyday life.

Lawrence’s Uncle Forty is a man who has seen better days and is in failing health. Despite that, he’s the self-proclaimed patriarch of the family and is eager to be acknowledged as such.

Solvan “Slick” Naim will helm the first two episodes of the series and will exec produce. Naim recently directed all of the episodes of Netflix’s upcoming A24 and Ramy Youssef-produced series Mo starring Mo Amer.

He also created, directed, wrote, produced and starred in Netflix series It’s Bruno, the story of a man and his beloved puggle dog, that scored an Emmy nomination in the Outstanding Short Form Comedy or Drama Series category in 2019.

The Algerian-American rapper, director, and writer has also directed episodes of AMC’s 61st Street, Starz’ Power and Bmf, FX’s Snowfall and NBC’s The Blacklist. His debut feature was Full Circle and he is currently developing a series for Hulu with Onyx and Macro.

Hubert will play Dr. Bonnetville, a psychotherapist with a quick wit and a smart mouth. She uses her patented blend of apathy and cutting edge technology to aid her patients on their quests for personal growth.

Eberhardt will play Redd, Demascus’ Bohemian artist best friend. Redd is a reformed reprobate stumbling into adulthood, and he’s determined to take Demascus with him.

Natalia Dyer is starring alongside Rachel Keller and Danny Ramirez in “Chestnut,” a queer love triangle drama that marks the feature film debut of director Jac Cron. Shot on location and named for the epicenter of queer culture in Philadelphia, Chestnut, the film quietly wrapped production this month. It’s eyeing an early 2022 festival premiere.

Dyer stars as a recent graduate who becomes unexpectedly entangled in a relationship with a man and a woman during an aimless summer after college, with Keller and Ramirez forming the other corners of the love triangle. The film also stars Chella Man (HBO Max’s “Titans”) and Caleb Eberhardt, and features a score

by composer Keegan DeWitt. It was produced by Lizzie Shapiro and Lexi Tannenholtz.

Chestnut reunites Shapiro with Utopia, who released “Shiva Baby” earlier this year. In addition to executive producing, Utopia is handling worldwide sales for the film.

Exclusive: Gravitas Ventures, a Red Arrow Studios company, has acquired rights to Lanie Zipoy’s film The Subject, starring Jason Biggs, Aunjanue Ellis, Anabelle Acosta and more, with plans to release it in select theaters across the U.S., as well as on Tvod and digital platforms across North America, on October 22.

Zipoy’s feature directorial debut follows Phil Waterhouse (Biggs), a successful white documentary filmmaker dealing with the fallout from his previous film, which caught the murder of a Black teen on tape.

Its ensemble also includes Carra Patterson (Straight Outta Compton), Nile Bullock (Ray Donovan), and Caleb Eberhardt (Judas and the Black Messiah).

Chisa Hutchinson wrote the script.

Zipoy produced the film with Megan Kingery Gahlia Eden (You Can’t Do That) and Jess Weiss (American Insurrection).

“Betty” has been canceled after two seasons at HBO, Variety has confirmed exclusively.

Created by Crystal Moselle, “Betty” is a teen comedy series based on Moselle’s critically-acclaimed 2018 film “Skate Kitchen.” It follows the lives of an all-girl group of skateboarders as they navigate the male-dominated sport.

“We will not be moving forward with a third season of ‘Betty,'” HBO said in a statement. “We are very grateful for the collaboration with Crystal and our incredible cast — their fearless exploration of the world of New York City’s skate culture will remain a beautiful emblem of friendship and community.”

Warner Bros. has released the official trailer for “Judas and the Black Messiah,” a biopic about the assassination of Black Panther Party leader Fred Hampton.

Directed by Shaka King, the film stars Oscar-nominated actor Daniel Kaluuya as Hampton, chairman of the Illinois chapter of the Black Panther Party, and Lakeith Stanfield as William O’Neal, a FBI informant whose betrayal leads to Hampton’s death.

The trailer emphasizes the juxtaposition between the two men by cutting between Hampton leading powerful chants at Black Panther meetings and O’Neal watching him nervously, painfully aware of what he must do. The preview also provides a bit of context to the betrayal, showing how O’Neal’s arrests for car theft and impersonating a federal officer leave him with the decision of going to prison or helping the FBI take down Hampton by infiltrating the party.

“Frozen 2’s” reign at the box office is finally over: Sony’s “Jumanji: The Next Level” is on its way to a winning $50 million debut.

The sequel film starring Dwayne Johnson, Jack Black, Karen Gillan, and Kevin Hart is opening at 4,227 North American locations and took in $19.4 million on Friday. That number set a few December records, including the biggest December opening day for a Sony film and the highest December opening day for a comedy of all time.
