[Disclaimer: Nerdly have been involved with The Baby in the Basket behind the scenes for some time now, with our own Phil and Kevin credited as Co-Executive Producers on the film. However… the site and their involvement have had No bearing on the outcome of this review!]

The Baby in the Basket takes its name from one of the best-known stories from the Bible, the tale of Moses being placed in a basket and sent adrift on the Nile, only to be discovered and adopted by Pharaoh’s daughter. However, in this eerie tale, the child left in a basket on the doorstep of St. Augustine’s convent may be anything but divine.

Set in 1942, during the height of World War II, the film takes place on a remote...

The nuns take the child in, intending to ferry him to the mainland once the weather clears. But as night falls, unsettling events plague the sisters, leading Sister Agnes to suspect the child might be something far darker than innocent. Her fears are dismissed as hysteria brought...

‘Cinderella’s Revenge’ Review
Image
Stars: Stephanie Lodge, Lauren Staerck, Beatrice Fletcher, Megan Purvis, Darrell Griggs, Natasha Henstridge, Mark Collier, Stephen Staley | Written by Tom Jolliffe | Directed by Andy Edwards

Horror versions of fairy tales, such as Snow White: A Tale of Terror with Sigourney Weaver and Sam Neil, for example, have been around for quite a while. And now the current trend of turning kid’s stories and nursery rhymes into horror films has carried over to them. It makes sense, they’re filled with witches, ghosts and in their original versions tended to be pretty grim and bloody moments such as Cinderella’s stepsisters cutting off their toes to try and get their foot in the glass slipper. And that brings us to Cinderella’s Revenge.

It certainly opens on an appropriately nasty note as Katherine frames her husband for the theft of the king’s jewels and has him killed for the bounty.

The Baby In The Basket | Another nun-related horror heading our way
Image
From the team behind Flickering Myth comes the gothic horror film The Baby In The Basket. First look and more details below.

I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again: 2024 has been a proper rollercoaster ride for horror fans. After a slow start, we’ve since been treated to the excellent Immaculate and The First Omen and the riotously fun Abigail and we’re not too far off from the release of Renny Harlin’s The Strangers: Chapter 1.

We’ve now got word of another horror film heading our way, hopefully sooner rather than later. The Baby In The Basket is directed by Nathan Shepka and Andy Crane from a script by Tom Jolliffe.

The Baby In The Basket is “set in 1942 where, as World War II rages on as the nuns of isolated Scottish monastery St. Augustine’s prepare for an incoming storm front. During the night,...

‘Cinderella’s Revenge’ Review – Horror Adaptation Returns the Fairy Tale to Its Gruesome Roots
Image
Fairy tales, in their undiluted forms, need no help when it comes to being creepy and horrifying. However, the Disneyfication of these classic stories makes it rather easy to forget their morbid beginnings. In the case of Cinderella, most modern adaptations of this quintessential rags-to-riches tale rarely bring up the violent aspects. All of that has been long removed in favor of safer elements, such as fairy godmothers and anthropomorphic mice. Yet, when reimagining the flaxen servant-turned-princess as someone who seeks “bloody vengeance,” Tom Jolliffe looked to the past; the Cinderella’s Revenge screenwriter found inspiration in the character’s gruesome roots.

The Brothers Grimm did not come up with Cinderella (or Aschenputtel) all on their own, but their familiar variation provides part of the source material for Cinderella’s Revenge. Charles Perrault is also credited, seeing as his French version (Cendrillon) was the first to feature the fairy godmother,...

Natasha Henstridge on Species & Her Horror Fairytale Cinderella's Revenge
Image
Your browser does not support the video tag.

Sometimes, living “happily ever after” means embarking on a blood-soaked path of revenge. That’s the case in the horror fairytale Cinderella’s Revenge. Directed by Andy Edwards (Zombie Spring Breakers), the film finds Lauren Staerck (Trust) having a helluva time as Rella until her fairy godmother shows up. That would be Natasha Henstridge (Species), who suggests there’s more to life than just nabbing Prince Charming, especially the shady one featured in Edwards’ gritty comedy horror film.

The story thus far: Cinderella’s (Staerck) wicked stepsisters and stepmother are throwing far too much shade. Somehow, our dear maiden winds up at the ball — nice touch having the “carriage” here come in the form of a Tesla — and her eyes twinkle with the prince and all that. But he’s not the charming gent we all remember him to be. Glass slippers appear.

Sky Monster trailer puts a creature in the air over the Bermuda Triangle

Tyler-James stays busy – so busy, it seems like the saying “Another week, another Tyler-James project” might soon be accurate. Also directed by Tyler-James is the upcoming ITN Distribution release Sky Monster, and a trailer for the film can be seen in the embed above. We don’t yet know exactly when Sky Monster is going to be released, but take a look at the trailer and find out if this looks like something you’d want to watch.

Coming our way from Jagged Edge Productions, the company that was behind Winnie the Pooh: Blood and Honey, Sky Monster was scripted by Tom Jolliffe and has the following synopsis:...

‘Lock & Load’ VOD Review
Image
Stars: Nathan Shepka, Colin MacDougall, Graeme MacPherson, Tony Macdonald, Laura MacDougall, Stephen Kerr | Written by Nathan Shepka, Tom Jolliffe | Directed by Nathan Shepka

Lock & Load, the sequel to 2021’s Holiday Monday, is once again directed and written by Nathan Shepka, though this time with a little additional script work by Tom Jolliffe. Shepka also returns as Nick, the independent security contractor. This time out he and his partner Derek are taking some target practice on another bank holiday when they get a call from Agent Stokes’ (Graeme MacPherson) wife. He hasn’t come home, do they know where he is?

They don’t know, though we know he’s been after arms dealer Miles Steiger and his partner The Chess Master, “Everyone’s a pawn in my game”, and unfortunately has had his cover blown.

I hadn’t seen the first film but Shepka’s script makes it very easy...

Nerdly joins British Gothic Horror ‘The Baby in the Basket’
Image
Yes folks you read that title right…Nerdly has joined British Gothic Horror The Baby in the Basket, which stars Amber Doig-Thorne (Winnie the Pooh: Blood and Honey), teaming with Shepka Productions and Flickering Myth on the production.

Some years back our Managing Editor Phil put together a project called Nerdly Presents. This was with the intention of getting more involved with our industry in a production and distribution capacity. The brand got off to an “interesting” start with Nerdly Presents’ first release, director James Cullen Bressack’s Hate Crime, getting banned by the BBFC! That was swiftly followed up with the VOD release of To Jennifer, another Bressack film, via the now-defunct UK-based TheHorrorShow.TV streaming service.

In short, yes we review and cover Films, TV, Comics, Games and Wrestling at every level, but we want to do more for independent creators. Hence Nerdly Presents. More recently we have...

Opening with a quote from H.G. Wells’ novel, War of the Worlds: The Attack is the latest in a seemingly endless stream of film, television shows, rock operas, and most infamously, a radio play by Orson Wells based on the classic tale of the original “Red Menace”.

Three friends Herbert, Hannah and Ogilvy are bicycling through the woods looking for a meteorite Hannah is sure landed nearby. They don’t find it although Herbert thinks he saw something hiding in the trees. He also has a theory that it’s not merely a meteorite.

The next morning they see what landed, something huge and already cordoned off by the police. As they sneak past for a closer look, it opens revealing an octopus-like occupant. But that’s nothing...

Renegades is one of those movies that on paper has all the makings of a solid direct to DVD hit. A sizeable cast of mid-tier names that you will not only know but also have a sort of nostalgic endearment toward and that’s a great thing for you guys because they do a huge service in elevating the material and hiding any problems. A story that while not exactly breaking any new ground is just this side of madcap shenanigans so that there’s a slight air of believability to its proceedings. We are talking London gangsters, low budgets and a cast and crew that doesn’t just believe in the project but are doing...

Firenado trailer: disaster movie from the makers of Winnie the Pooh: Blood and Honey

A.A. Milne’s 1926 children’s book Winnie-the-Pooh and the characters in it lapsed into the public domain at the start of this year, a fact that has allowed director Rhys Frake-Waterfield to make the upcoming horror film Winnie the Pooh: Blood and Honey. That movie is set to reaches theatres (though Fathom Events in the US) on February 15th… but before that one arrives, we’ll have the chance to watch a different Frake-Waterfield project. Uncork’d Entertainment has acquired the distribution rights to the disaster movie Firenado, which Frake-Waterfield directed with Scott Jeffrey (Exorcist Vengeance), and they’re planning to give the film a digital release on January 3rd! With that date less than a week away, a trailer for Firenado has arrived online and can be seen in the embed above.

Said to rival the likes of Geostorm and The Day After Tomorrow, Firenado was written by Tom Jolliffe...

‘Firenado’ Review

Stars: Toby Wynn-Davies, Sian Altman, Daniel Godfrey, Nicola Wright, Matthew Marcelis | Written by Tom Jolliffe | Directed by Rhys Frake-Waterfield, Scott Jeffrey

Dr. Devlin is on the verge of a breakthrough. I’m not entirely sure what his techno-babble means, even his intern Anna suggests he repeat it in English. Whatever it is it has something to do with controlling a tornado. Of course, it does just the opposite and soon the twister is not only growing at an alarming rate, it’s on fire as well.

Not everyone sees this as a bad thing, however. A gang of thieves sees it as the perfect distraction to let them rob the house of Pierce Moore. He’s a mob accountant who not only gets deliveries of literal boxes of cash, he’s the proud owner of the worst Southern accent in history. Of course, Devlin, Anna, and Devlin’s assistant Helena...

Renegades, not to be confused with the 2017 action film of the same name, starts on a familiar enough note as retired Green Beret Major Carver getting on the wrong side of mob boss Goram. It seems Carver’s daughter Judy is a local politician and has been leading a clean up the streets campaign and making complaints about Goram’s activities. When Goram had his goons threaten her Carver got involved. And ends up beaten to death for his troubles.

When her father’s military buddies Burton, Peck, Woody, and Harris hear about it they know what needs to be done. These old soldiers are about to fight a new war on the streets of London.

‘The Area 51 Incident’ Review
Image
Stars: Scott Jeffery, Megan Purvis, Toby Wynn-Davies, Craig David Dowsett, Andrew Rolfe | Written by Tom Jolliffe | Directed by Rhys Frake-Waterfield

The Area 51 Incident is something of a first. After films variously written, produced, directed and whatever else by Scott Jeffery, this marks his first appearance in front of the camera. He plays Trent who, along with another scientist, Jenny is getting a chance to visit the top-secret facility at Area 51. Coincidentally Trent’s father Doug happens to be in charge of the facility.

Equally coincidentally it happens to be the day that activity on the rift the facility monitors peaks and opens a portal to an alien world. That allows a bloodthirsty alien race to come pouring through and invade Earth. The three of them promptly take off in Doug’s conveniently parked Mercedes leaving the base’s peons to be eaten. They even stop at one point so Doug can get out and watch.

TV Review: “The Longest Day In Chang’an” is a sprawling, intoxicating thriller, and is more than just China’s answer to 24
Jackson Yee
Author: Tom Jolliffe

“The Longest Day In Chang’an is an immersive and unforgettable show that, despite its frenetic storytelling, is in no hurry to reach its epic conclusion.”

Historical dramas made for television rarely reach the ambitious heights that The Longest Day In Chang’an scales throughout its epic 48-episode running time. Indeed, few dare to. Director Cao Dun has crafted a sumptuous adaptation of Ma Boyong’s sprawling novel of the same name for the small screen that has captivated audiences in China since its initial release in 2019.

Chang’an, the glittering beacon of the Tang Dynasty, is the location for a pulsating drama that feels distinctly modern in tone, despite its 8th-century setting. Chang’an has been brought to life with unwavering attention to detail – from each silk-woven fiber worn by its actors to the lavish sets constructed by a production team who spent more than seven...

‘Van Helsing’ Review
Image
Stars: Antonia Whillans, Elspeth Foster, Beatrice Fletcher, Abi Casson Thompson, Darrell Griggs, Michael Hoad | Written by Tom Jolliffe | Directed by Soner Metin

Not to be confused with the Hugh Jackman film of the same name, this Van Helsing, originally titled Wrath of Van Helsing, is a British film from producer Scott Jeffrey and his Jagged Edge Productions. And regular readers of this site will know what that means…

Four English lasses Ellie, Briony, Alex, and Shauna are going hiking.

And where you may ask are they going hiking in fishnet stockings and thigh-high boots? The Zone, which they must have thought was a goth club. Actually, it’s a fenced-off nuclear dumping ground, England’s answer to Chernobyl. And not only is it fenced off, but there’s also garlic on the road into it. So it’s no surprise when they get attacked by hooded, neck-bitting creatures.

Meanwhile, Ellie...

‘Tooth Fairy: The Last Extraction’ Review
Image
Stars: Andrew Rolfe, Annie Knox, Jo Barker, Evangelina Burton, Rob Drake, Ricardo Freitas, Lee Hancock, Lewis Hudson, Anthony Howes, Lucinda Nicole | Written by Tom Jolliffe | Directed by Louisa Warren

Ah the laws of diminishing returns… Tooth Fairy: The Last Extraction is the second sequel the less-than-stellar original film, which was pretty bad – even for low-budget British film. In fact that first film was a blight on the record of Champ Dog Films who had – until then – been making inroads into the UK genre scene for some time, often overcoming shortcomings, be they budget, production values or performances, to create genre fare worthy of carry the tag of “ a great British Horror film.” Luckily for Champ Dog they managed to strike a deal with US distributors, finding success on the shelves of Walmart’s across the States… which, one would assume, is how we’ve got to a Third film in...

With a title shortened from Witches of Amityville Academy (probably so as not to give anyone the wrong impression that this is a teen movie a la Sabrina), Witches of Amityville tells the story of Jessica who, when receives an invitation to attend an exclusive academy, jumps at the chance to go to a prestigious school. However, on her first night, when she sees another newcomer murdered in front of her, she realises something is very wrong. She discovers the academy is actually a cover for a coven of witches and she has hidden powers that might just help save her life and escape their evil clutches…

‘Awesomely Righteous & Radical’ Review
Image
Created by Shane Ryan | Written by Luc Bernier, Jason Ewert, Dean Houlihan, Tom Jolliffe, Matti Soikkeli, Jim Towns | Directed by Luc Bernier, Jason Ewert, Dustin Ferguson, Dean Houlihan, Oliver Jolliffe, Shane Ryan, Matti Soikkeli, Aaron Stielstra, Jim Towns

Pretty much everybody loves the 80s, right? Horror fans are no different, and homages are as popular as ever when it comes to taking a greyhound back to the decade of spandex, hairspray, shoulder-pads and glam. Awesomely Righteous & Radical is an 80s inspired anthology, or… as it says on the poster “a totally tubular 80s homage anthology”.

Now, I’m an 80s horror lover, and I like a good anthology film, so I was intrigued by this. The concept is simple and has potential to be… well… totally tubular, rad, awesome, most excellent. Here, we have a whole stack of short-films with the connection to them all being that they’re set...

‘Return of the Tooth Fairy’ Review
Image
Stars: Jake Watkins, Katie McKenna, Chelsea Greenwood, Aj Blackwell, Venetia Cook, Gus Fithen, Simon Manley, Niru Sukanthan | Written by Tom Jolliffe | Directed by Louisa Warren

Ah, the joy of sequels. And the laws of diminishing returns… Dear god if that’s true I don’t know how the hell I’m going to get through Return of the Tooth Fairy. After all the original film, which we reviewed back in March, was pretty bad – even for low-budget British filmmaking. And it’s certainly not a shining light in the output of Champ Dog Films who have been making inroads into the UK genre scene for some time now often times overcoming shortcomings, be they budget, production values or performances, to create genre fare worthy of carry the tag of “Great British Horror”. They’ve also managed to strike up quite the deal with Us distributors, finding success on the shelves...
