Anora continues to pick up speed heading into the Oscars, scoring Critics Choice Awards and DGA wins and snagging a Best Feature win at the Film Independent Spirit Awards. A Real Pain and Didi each earned two awards during the February 22, 2025 Spirit Awards ceremony hosted by Aidy Bryant.

On the television side, Baby Reindeer dominated with three wins. The critically acclaimed limited series took home the Best Lead Performance (Richard Gadd), Best Supporting Performance (Nava Mau), and Best Breakthrough Performance (Jessica Gunning) wins. Film Independent handed out its 2025 Spirit Awards on Saturday afternoon (February 22), in a Santa Monica ceremony that saw Anora claim three prizes for best feature, director Sean Baker, and lead performance Mikey Madison in the gender-neutral category.

The 2025 Film Independent Spirit Awards have wrapped! And now we know, as the full winners list for the Spirit Awards has been revealed, just how much momentum “Anora” has going into the Oscars: a lot. It already got the most Spirits nominations with six, and it ended up winning Best Feature, Best Director for Sean Baker, and Best Lead Performance for Mikey Madison.

Kieran Culkin won Best Supporting Performance for “A Real Pain,” which also won Best Screenplay. “No Other Land” won Best Documentary, and the extraordinary animated film “Flow” won Best International feature.

“Baby Reindeer” collected the most prizes on the TV side with Best Lead Performance in a New Scripted Series going to Richard Gadd, Jessica Gunning won Best Breakthrough Performance in a New Scripted Series, and Best Supporting Performance in a New Scripted Series went to Nava Rau. “Shogun” won Best New Scripted Series.

The 40th annual Independent Spirit Awards took place in Santa Monica on Feb. 22, with Aidy Bryant as host for the second year in a row.

That’s Tom Cruise begging his fellow Imf teammates to go on one more death-defying expedition to save the world in a new action-packed Super Bowl trailer for “Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning.” Paramount Pictures will release the film, which is being billed as Cruise’s final outing as super-spy Ethan Hunt, in theaters on May 23.

The spot doesn’t stint on the crazy stunts that have become the franchise’s signature. At one point, Cruise dangles upside down from a plane, clinging on for dear life. Cruise is no slouch when it comes to risking it all on screen, having previously scaled the side of the Burj Khalifa and piloted a motorcycle off a cliff. Tom Cruise has lit the fuse at the Super Bowl with a new look at Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning.

The feature is the eighth (and possibly final?) installment for Cruise in the long-running franchise, which dates back to 1996’s Mission: Impossible and which has become known for an increasingly ambitious series of stunts.

For almost a decade, the signature stunt of a Mission movie has been teased for upwards of a year in advance, such as Cruise hanging off the side of a plane for Rogue Nation, performing a Halo skydive for Fallout or jumping a motorbike off a cliff for Dead Reckoning. This time, the stunt has been kept under wraps until much closer to the release of the film, with Cruise revealing on Feb. 7 that one stunt involved him hanging off of an upside down propeller plane.

Ethan Hunt has been saving the world for nearly thirty years, but will Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning be his last mission? There have been rumblings that Tom Cruise may call it quits with The Final Reckoning, but if that’s the case, neither he nor director Christopher McQuarrie are prepared to confirm it… yet.

“You gotta see the movie,” Cruise told Empire when they tried to get an answer out of him. “It’s a hard thing for me to discuss at the moment, because it really is something that you have to experience.” The actor added that The Final Reckoning will be “an epic, emotional journey of the entire franchise.“

McQuarrie also wasn’t willing to confirm anything but did say that the film will be “the satisfying conclusion to a 30-year story arc. I’m pretty confident that people are going to feel that the title was appropriate.

According to director Christopher McQuarrie, the final instalment of the Tom Cruise’s hit spy franchise — films that have become known for upping the crazy with each title when it comes to stunts — has a sequence that gave at least one early audience member more than just a shock.

“We had a small screening, and someone said, ‘I was suffocating throughout the entire sequence. I almost had a heart attack,'” he told Empire magazine in an interview, according GamesRadar. “And I thought, ‘I guess we did something right.”

Edgar Wright (Shaun of the Dead, Last Night in Soho) is directing a new take on Stephen King’s The Running Man, and the adaptation has found its game show host in actor Colman Domingo per Deadline.

The Running Man will now release in theaters on November 7, 2025 after shifting from its original November 21 date.

King’s novel, published under the pseudonym Richard Bachman, was released in 1982, loosely adapted into the same-titled Arnold Schwarzenegger-starring film in 1987. The story follows “Ben Richards, a desperate man who participates in violent reality show called The Running Man in order to win enough money to revive his gravely ill daughter. Ah, the year is coming to a close. And with that comes the obligatory year-end top 10 list. So here are the top 10 movies of 2024 according to me, James Jay Edwards. Remember – this is my list and does not claim to reflect the opinions of anyone else.

10 – A Different Man

As a fan of Adam Pearson’s, I was thrilled to see him in a role he could really sink his teeth into. Bonus points to writer/director Aaron Schimberg for including a scene that addresses the question of representation vs. exploitation.

(Irish musical biopic Kneecap is sort of a 10.5 here. On any given day, it could flip spots with A Different Man.)

The new release date isn’t entirely free of competition, as The Running Man will now face off against Dan Trachtenberg’s Predator: Badlands and Yorgo Lanthimos’ Bugonia, all of which are currently set to open on the same day.

From Feyd-Rautha in Dune: Part Two to Dementus in Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga, the movies of 2024 have brought some really great new villains to the big screen. There were some movie villains in 2024 who were just outright evil with no redeeming qualities, like Nicolas Cage’s titular Satanic serial killer in Longlegs. But there were also some villains that turned out to be sympathetic and misunderstood, like Anxiety in Inside Out 2.

2024 brought some surprisingly great villain performances from actors who don’t usually play villains. The typically affable Hugh Grant played a terrifying monster in Heretic, and the charming Josh Hartnett played a cold-hearted murderer in M. Night Shyamalan’s Trap. This year brought some really great movies, and with those great movies came some great villains.

M. Night Shyamalan’s Trap doesn’t completely hold together as a thriller, but it works beautifully as a dark comedy.
