The English-language cast is headlined by Marisa Abela and Harris Dickinson, joined by Glenn Close, Bill Nighy, Jessie Buckley, Will Poulter and Toheeb Jimoh, a lineup that underscores Audible’s ambition to match screen casting standards.

Lulu Raczka’s script keeps Austen’s dialogue yet adds first-person narration from Elizabeth, a device designed to deepen character insight for listeners through Dolby Atmos spatial sound.

I’m Surprised Nobody Is Talking About Apple TV+’s Spy Thriller ‘Carême’ Despite 95% Rt Score
Image
Apple TV+’s French-language historical drama Carême, which stars Benjamin Voisin as the titular character, is one of the intriguing spy thriller dramas that are ongoing on the streaming platform. The show goes on to trace the life of Marie-Antonin Carême, who is known as the world’s first celebrity chef during the Napoleonic era.

Directed by Martin Bourboulon, Carême is based on Ian Kelly’s book titled Cooking for Kings: The Life of Antonin Carême, The First Celebrity Chef. Critics describe the show as gripping and a decent blend of s*x, food, and politics. But there is something more surprising for the viewers than just the show’s review.

Apple TV+’s Carême holds a high critic score on Rotten Tomatoes

Benjamin Voisin-starring French-language historical spy-thriller Carême premiered on Apple TV+ on 30th April 2025 and instantly had viewers hooked. Set in the backdrop of the Napoleonic Era, the...

2025 Cannes Critics’ Panel: Day 7 – Tarik Saleh’s ‘Eagles of the Republic’
Image
Swedish filmmaker Tarik Saleh has been moving up from arthouse The Nile Hilton Incident (read ★★★ review) and genre items The Contractor (read ★★ review) to Cannes type projects such as Cairo Conspiracy aka Boy From Heaven (read ★★½ review). A political thriller and the third and final film in Saleh’s Cairo trilogy, Eagles Of The Republic stars hius muse Fares Fares, Lyna Khoudri, Cherien Dabis, Zineb Triki and Sherwan Haji. Filmed in May of last year, on the verge of losing everything, George is forced to accept the role of President Al-Sisi in a biopic about himself.…...

Eagles of the Republic Review: A Star’s Dangerous Performance
Image
Tarik Saleh’s Eagles of the Republic follows George Fahmy, once Egypt’s most bankable star, as he confronts an impossible moral trial. Summoned by shadowy government agents to embody President Abdel Fattah el-Sisi in a state-sponsored biopic, Fahmy initially navigates the assignment with wry detachment.

Early scenes unfold on chaotic soundstages, where barking producers demand patriotic flair and the aging actor finds himself hustling for erectile medication under cover of night. As the regime’s grip tightens through threats against his son, the film shifts from dark comedy into a razor-sharp political thriller.

Set in contemporary Cairo under authoritarian rule, Saleh examines the collision of celebrity and coercion, asking how far one will bend when art becomes a weapon and family safety hangs in the balance.

Narrative & Thematic Exploration

Saleh divides the film into three narrative arcs, each escalating stakes and shifting tone. In the opening, on-set absurdities such...

‘Eagles of the Republic’ Review: Movies Collide With Political Might in Tarik Saleh’s Dark and Clever Conspiracy Thriller
Image
Once again navigating a labyrinth of corruption and bad behavior inside contemporary Egypt, writer-director Tarik Saleh delivers another solid, thought-provoking thriller with Eagles of the Republic. Both entertaining and insightful, not to mention darkly funny in its first half, the Swedish-Egyptian filmmaker follows up The Nile Hilton Incident and Cairo Conspiracy with a crime-ridden drama about a famous actor who’s forced to play President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi in a biopic, then pays a high price for his success.

Reteaming with star Fares Fares, who headlined the above-mentioned films, Saleh completes what could be considered his Cairo trilogy, with each movie tackling a hot-button social or political issue through well-crafted genre storytelling. If Nile Hilton focused on drugs and police malfeasance and Conspiracy took on fraud in the world of Muslim clerical schools, Eagles highlights the dirty dealings between the government and the film industry, showing how popular artists are...

‘Eagles Of The Republic’ Review: The Terrific Fares Fares Stars In Tarik Saleh’s Precision-Tooled Political Thriller – Cannes Film Festival
Image
Swedish director Tarik Saleh would be a left-field but great pick for a Bond movie, and the third entry in his Cairo trilogy — following The Nile Hilton Incident (2017) and Boy from Heaven (2022) — is the proof. Like his previous films, it stars terrific Lebanese-Swedish actor Fares Fares (an actor so good they named him twice), in another precision-tooled political thriller that starts with a good deal more humor that seen previously in his works but rapidly ratchets up the tension for a shattering climax. Deftly and daringly blending fact and fiction, it shares DNA with István Szabó’s 1981 Nazi-era drama Mephisto.

Like Mephisto, it is about a self-seeking actor whose arrogance gets him into bad company. Fares plays George Fahmy, the biggest movie star in Egypt. They call him “The Pharoah of the Screen,” and that adoration has been the ruin of him. Having abandoned his wife and son, he lives...

Tarik Saleh Closes Out Cairo Trilogy with Egyptian Political Satire ‘Eagles of the Republic’ at Cannes: See First Footage
Image
Acclaimed Swedish-Egyptian filmmaker Tarik Saleh spotlights the fraught history of the Arab film industry with his latest film, “Eagles of the Republic.” Saleh concludes his Cairo trilogy films with the satirical political thriller, which takes place in Egypt.

Swedish actor Fares Fares plays a fictionalized Egyptian superstar actor who is pressured to star in a government-commissioned film. After he reluctantly accepts the role, he finds himself thrown into the inner circle of power and begins an affair with the mysterious wife of the general overseeing the film. Lyna Khoudri, Cherien Dabis, Zineb Triki, and Sherwan Haji co-star. “Eagles of the Republic” will premiere in competition at Cannes 2025.

Saleh’s Cairo trilogy began with his 2017 Sundance Grand Jury prize winner, “The Nile Hilton Incident.” Saleh was exiled from Egypt prior to shooting his 2017 film, yet he continued to set films in the country while shooting instead in Turkey. “It’s very sad.

The Empire Season 1 Review: A Coastal Confrontation of Cosmic Proportions
Image
Bruno Dumont’s The Empire – Season 1 plunges an extraterrestrial struggle into the windswept dunes of Northern France, where mythic forces lurk beneath fishing‑village calm. Across six episodes (approximately three hours total), the creator who once championed social‑realist austerity turns his lens toward metaphysical farce.

Set in French (with subtitles), the series riffs on space‑opera rituals through a self‑aware prism. Two alien orders—the luminous Ones and shadowy Zeros—assume human guises among villagers as they contest the fate of Freddy, a toddler prophesied to become ultimate evil. Dumont recruits Lyna Khoudri (Line), Anamaria Vartolomei (Jane), Brandon Vlieghe (Jony), Fabrice Luchini (Belzébuth) and Camille Cottin (the Ones’ queen), alongside returning non‑actors as earnest gendarmes.

Deadpan dialogue, sudden musical interludes and widescreen compositions recall the emotional clarity of parallel cinema in India—where Satyajit Ray once used serene landscapes to probe spiritual conflict—and Bollywood’s emerging sci‑fi ambitions,...

5 Reasons Why ‘Carême’ on Apple TV+ Fell Flat Despite Great Promise
Image
Apple TV+ has released another binge-watchable show, Carême, this time in the French language. Based on the book Cooking for Kings: The Life of Antonin Carême, The First Celebrity Chef, the show’s story explores a fictionalized version of historical chef Antonin Carême.

Benjamin Voisin plays the expert baker who hesitantly becomes part of Napoleon’s consulate as a spy. He initially turns down the job at Tulleries. However, Napoleon holds his father captive, and he seeks help from the nobleman Talleyrand, who has revolutionary tendencies.

Martin Bourboulon’s series is a visual treat, however, it fails to go all the way to become the promised groundbreaking period drama. Food and s*x are the driving force behind this show. When all of that is presented in a visually appealing manner, a show lacking real substance can easily earn a spot on many people’s must-watch lists without much effort.

Apple TV+ ‘Carême’ Turns World’s First Celebrity Chef into Sex-Oozing Rock Star: ‘We Spent Hours Looking at Lenny Kravitz and Mick Jagger’
Image
The world’s first celebrity chef, Marie-Antoine Carême, came to prominence in the Napoleonic era. But the makers of Apple TV+ series “Carême” turned to other great men for inspiration.

“We spent hours looking at photos of Lenny Kravitz and Mick Jagger,” says star Benjamin Voisin.

“With costume designer Pierre-Jean Larroque, we thought it would be great to bring that sexy, liberated feeling to his outfits, to bring rock’n’roll. What could be more beautiful from making a period series yet talking about people who could live today?”

Director Martin Bourboulon – previously behind “The Three Musketeers: D’Artagnan” and “The Three Musketeers: Milady” – also looked for a modern twist to the story.

“I wanted to avoid the usual ‘period drama style’ and give Carême this sexy, rock’n’roll attitude, which Benjamin also has in real life. It doesn’t matter if the costumes aren’t always [historically] accurate – it was...

‘The Empire’ Review: Bruno Dumont’s Smugly Absurdist Anti-Space Opera
Image
Notable as it is for evoking a kind of cosmic banality, writer-director Bruno Dumont’s anti-space opera The Empire runs into same the pitfall as many parodies of its kind. However intriguing its premise may be, the film becomes tedious in practice, as what few homegrown ideas it has to offer lack for substantial development. Built almost entirely on the very tropes that it sets out to undermine, The Empire mainly succeeds at hollowing out itself.

A present-day fishing village in Northern France would seem to be an unlikely battleground for a galactic conflict between good and evil, and it’s this incongruity of setting and story that forms a basis for The Empire. The 1s and the 0s, as the opposing forces call themselves, must take human form to properly exist. On the 0 side, there’s the fisherman Jony (Brandon Vlieghe), father to the Wain—a toddler destined to...

"The gendarmes on it." "Humans are useless." Kino Lorber has finally revealed an official US trailer for The Empire, the strange French sci-fi film from filmmaker Bruno Dumont. After first being unveiled in 2023 and premiering in early 2024, it's only now getting a US release starting in March 2025 - it already opened in Europe last year and didn't do very well. We also posted the first French trailer for this way back in 2023. Dumont's sci-fi The Empire (called L'Empire in French) is set in a quiet fishing village on the Opal Coast in Northern France, and tells the story of a child who's apparently so unique & peculiar it unleashes a secret war between extraterrestrial forces of good & evil. Starring a very French cast including Virginie Efira, Lily-Rose Depp, Camille Cottin, Lyna Khoudri, Anamaria Vartolomei, & Fabrice Luchini. This received quite a few negative and mixed reviews, apparently it's a bit too...

Aliens Invade France in Bruno Dumont’s Absurdist Space Opera ‘The Empire’
Image
From the singular mind of writer-director Bruno Dumont comes The Empire, an absurdist parody of space opera tropes popularized by Star Wars.

Hailed as “beautifully crafted and certifiably insane” by The Hollywood Reporter, the French film opens at New York’s IFC Center on March 7 with national expansion to follow from Kino Lorber.

Lyna Khoudri (The French Dispatch), Anamaria Vartolomei (Mickey 17), Camille Cottin (“Killing Eve”), and Fabrice Luchini (In the House) star in the apocalyptic sci-fi comedy drama.

In a picturesque fishing village in Northern France, a very special child is born, unleashing a secret war between extraterrestrial forces of good and evil. In an attempt to restore their empires, two opposing forces from the depths of outer space, One and Zero, unleash an apocalyptic conflict on Earth.

The villainous Zero forces secretly take over the bodies of village locals in order to foster pandemonium on the planet. At the same time,...
