Right now, The Lord of the Rings: The War of the Rohirrim is playing in theaters. This marks the first time in a decade that a new Lord of the Rings movie has graced the big screen, and for fans of Middle-earth, it's a fun way to visit their favorite fantasy world for the holidays.
Which is not to say that The War of the Rohirrim is a light movie. Helmed by Japanese director Kenji Kamiyama, The War of the Rohirrim tells the story of legendary king of Rohan Helm Hammerhand (Brian Cox) and his daughter Héra (Gaia Wise), who have to withstand a brutal siege by the Dunlending lord Wulf (Luke Pasqualino) at the castle known as the Hornburg, otherwise known as Helm's Deep. Ever wonder how it got that name? If you've seen the movie, now you know!

Based on J.R.R. Tolkien's "The House of Eorl", a short story found in Appendix A of his legendary novel, The Lord of the Rings: The War of the Rohirrim follows the King of Rohan's battle against an army of Dunlendings. The animated movie is told in traditional anime style and helmed by iconic director Kenji Kamiyama (Ghost in the Shell) and borrows from several stories throughout Tolkien's legendarium as well as the Peter Jackson trilogy of movies. But while the movie centers on Rohan's King Helm Hammerhand, it also features the return of Miranda Otto's Éowyn.

The Lord Of The Rings: The War Of The Rohirrim has debuted to $4.6 million at the box office, according to a recent report by Variety. However, it was revealed that the film’s performance in the box office was not Warner Bros.’ primary focus.
The anime film, which was produced on a $30 million budget, was developed and rushed into production primarily to safeguard New Line Cinema’s rights to adapt J. R. R. Tolkien’s works.
The studio has held these rights through a licensing agreement with Zaentz Co. since the late 1990s. Though the specific terms of the contract are not public, it is believed that Warner Bros. is required to maintain active development and production of Tolkien-related projects to retain the rights.
In early 2022, Zaentz Co., which controls a portfolio of Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit rights, reportedly began exploring a sale of its Tolkien holdings.

Spoilers are never late, nor are they early, but arrive precisely when they mean to. That time is now, as this article discusses major plot details from "The Lord of the Rings: The War of the Rohirrim."
Who knew that everything old would officially become new again in Middle-earth? Although the main appeal of "The War of the Rohirrim" has always been the idea of getting to know a whole new cast of characters to root for and against, we've known that a familiar face or two from the "Lord of the Rings" trilogy would be coming along for the ride in this particular story. Embroiled in a struggle to prevent bloodshed among the people of the horse-centric country of Rohan, the princess Hèra (voiced by Gaia Wise) emerges as a hero unlike any we've seen in this franchise before. Luke Pascqualino's Wulf accomplishes much the same from the other side of the aisle,...

Paper-thin characters and a derivative plot make this Lord Of The Rings anime into a flashy legal exercise. Here’s our The War Of The Rohirrim review.
A film which exists to settle Warner Bros’ Lord Of The Rings development obligations, War Of The Rohirrim – an anime-inspired epic set 183 years before Peter Jackson’s trilogy –is a 134-minute accounting exercise. That isn’t necessarily a problem; in a year when 14 of the top 15 highest-grossing movies worldwide are sequels of one form or another, sometimes we just have to take the blockbusters we’re given.
Sometimes, however, the business case for a film so obviously outweighs its artistic merit it proves too distracting to ignore. As Blade Runner: Black Lotus director Kenji Kamiyama’s adaptation of another J R R Tolkien appendices settles in to reproduce its fourth or fifth plot point from The Two Towers, it’s hard not to...

With The Lord of the Rings: The War of the Rohirrim set to hit theaters soon, Animehunch had the opportunity to interview Kenji Kamiyama, the legendary director behind the anime adaptation of J.R.R. Tolkien’s epic world.
Kamiyama, known for his work on Eden of the East, Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex and Napping Princess, shared insights into the challenges and unique aspects of directing this ambitious project.
Director Kenji Kamiyama speaking to Animehunch The Challenges of Portraying Large-Scale Battles:
When asked about the most significant difference between directing The War of the Rohirrim and his previous works, Kamiyama highlighted the challenges of portraying large-scale battle scenes featuring horses and soldiers.
While the director acknowledged that animation was a medium that was suitable for portraying fantasy stories, the sheer scale of battles in the movie, with an added sense of realism, was not something that animation was good at portraying.

Review: Few dark fantasy properties are as timeless, influential, and well-guarded as J.R.R. Tolkien’s The Lord of the Rings. The first official poster for Warner Bros.' animated The Lord of the Rings prequel film, The War of the Rohirrim, has been released.
The artwork features the king's daughter, Hera, standing ready to defend her home from ruthless invaders, with her father, King Helm Hammerhand, and the villainous Wulf in the background.
The Middle Earth adventure, which is set almost 200 years before the events of J.R.R. Tolkien's classic trilogy, follows the mighty first King of Rohan as he mounts a defence of the fortress of Hornburg (which came to be known as Helm's Deep) from a relentless siege.
“This is the story of the most powerful king in Rohan's history, someone who defeated his enemies with his bare fists,” director Kenji Kamiyama said in a recent interview. “Why did his lineage have to end with him? I think there is a lesson in hubris there and also for...

I am profoundly excited about The Lord of the Rings: The War of the Rohirrim, but wondering whether it will give enough importance to one of the key characters of the Tolkien story. The upcoming War of the Rohirrim movie will adapt a story from "Appendix A" of Tolkien's masterwork, The Lord of the Rings. High fantasy trailblazer J.R.R. Tolkien spun many yarns in the novel's appendices - Tolkien used them to create a rich mythology for Middle-earth, creating his distinctive mythopoeic writing style. There is one significant Rohirrim king from Tolkien's mythology that I couldn't identify in the trailer.
"The House of Eorl" in "Appendix A" lays out the key players in The War of the Rohirrim's story, some of which appear in the trailer, and some of which may not. I love the trailer, it solidifies what Warner Bros. had been suggesting all along - Hra will take center stage and,...

The Lord of the Rings franchise is expanding with new TV shows and movies set in Middle-earth. The Rings of Power season 2 and The War of the Rohirrim are among the upcoming projects. The Hunt for Gollum will be directed by Andy Serkis and is part of a new wave of cinematic Middle-earth content.
The future of The Lord of the Rings looks bright, with several upcoming TV shows and movies set in Middle-earth currently in production. Since the original The Lord of the Rings trilogy began in 2001, the franchise's movie & TV portfolio has expanded via prequels and spinoffs. The enduring legacy of Peter Jackson's movies means rights holders are eager to produce more content derived from J.R.R. The Lord Of The Rings: The War Of The Rohirrim is heading to cinemas this Christmas – and here’s the first trailer for the film.
We’ve known for several years now that an animated feature film set within The Lord Of The Rings was on the way. There’s lots to get excited about with this project too: an anime filmmaker, the award-winning director Kenji Kamiyama (who directed the excellent Blade Runner: Black Lotus) being given a Hollywood franchise and working with a Hollywood studio, something we don’t see as often as we should.
There’s Brian Cox voicing a legendary King of Rohan. Also, the film is an official extension of Peter Jackson’s revered Lord Of The Rings films. Oh, and the setting is Helm’s Deep, one of the story’s most iconic settings, a highly-defensible fort which means lots of action and daring exploits.
