As A Shadow and Bone Fan, It Breaks My Heart To Say I Don't Want A Comic Book Continuation
Image
With so many canceled shows continuing in comic or graphic novel form, its safe to say Shadow and Bone is not exempt from the conversation. Shadow and Bone was canceled in November 2023, barely a week after Netflix released a connected game titled "Enter The Fold" during Geeked Week. And while a comic run would be a good way to see the show safely continued, it breaks my heart as a comic fan to say that a Shadow and Bone comic book continuation wouldnt workand its not what the show deserves.

Shadow and Bone was a fantasy TV show that premiered in 2021 and centered around the discovery of Sun Summoner Alina Starkov and her countrys political divide. Its second season arrived in 2023 after much anticipation. The adaptation combined the trilogy Shadow and Bone with the duology Six of Crows, both written by author and executive producer Leigh Barudgo.

Unfortunately, both Shadow and Bone...

Who Are The Six Of Crows? Every Member Of Kaz Brekker's Crew Explained
Image
Warning: This list contains spoilers for Leigh Bardugo's Six of Crows and Crooked Kingdom novels.

The Shadow and Bone TV show never completed Six of Crows' storylines due to its cancellation. Essential members of Kaz's crew are introduced, but they are never all working together at once. The official six members of the "Six of Crows" are Kaz, Inej, Jesper, Nina, Matthias, and Wylan.

Netflix's canceled Shadow and Bone TV show never had the time to complete the story of Kaz Brekker's (Freddy Carter) crew, the title characters of Leigh Bardugo's Six of Crows. Shadow and Bone loosely follows the plot of Bardugo's Shadow and Bone novel trilogy. She later wrote the spinoff Six of Crows, focusing on new characters in the same world. However, the Shadow and Bone TV show adaptation alters the timeline so some Six of Crows events happen alongside the Shadow and Bone plot.

Andrew Scott And ‘Stranger Things’ Stage Adaptation Win Big At Critics’ Circle Theatre Awards
Image
Andrew Scott has been awarded Best Actor at the 33rd Critics’ Circle Theatre Awards. The win makes the Irish actor the first performer to be handed top honors from both of the UK’s national critics bodies.

Scott won the Theatre Awards award for his performance in Vanya, a one-man Chekov adaptation during which Scott plays eight different characters in conversation with each other. Scott landed the same award late last year from the Film Critics Circle, also under the UK Critics’ Circle umbrella for his performance in Andrew Haigh’s enigmatic feature All Of Us Strangers.

Sarah Hemming, the chief theater critic of the Financial Times, described Scott’s performance in Vanya as “tremendously moving, dialing up the empathy at the heart of that great, humane play and at the heart of live theatre” when she presented him with the award.

The Trewin Award for Best Shakespearean Performance went...

Shadow & Bone, Glamorous, Three More Canceled at Netflix
Ben Barnes, Archie Renaux, and Jessie Mei Li in Shadow and Bone (2021)
When the WGA and SAG-AFTRA strikes got underway earlier this year, many Netflix shows were left with fates up in the air.

Now that the strikes are over and Hollywood is getting back to normal, the series won't be making the cut for additional seasons are being revealed.

Deadline revealed Wednesday that Shadow & Bone, Glamorous, Agent Elvis, Farzar, and Captain Fall will not be returning.

Shadow & Bone is the highest profile of the five shows, having made it to a second season.

Despite the freshman season garnering considerable buzz, Shadow & Bone Season 2 launched earlier this year to little fanfare.

Based on the Grishaverse books by Leigh Bardugo, Shadow and Bone Season 2 follows Alina Starkov, who is now on the run.

The series stars Jessie Mei Li (Alina Starkov), Archie Renaux (Malyen Oretsev), Freddy Carter (Kaz Brekker), Amita Suman (Inej Ghafa), Kit Young (Jesper Fahey), Danielle Galligan (Nina Zenik...

Uma Thurman, Samuel L. Jackson Thriller ‘The Kill Room’ Lands at Shout Studios (Exclusive)
Image
Shout Studios acquired North American rights to “The Kill Room,” a thriller starring Uma Thurman, Samuel L. Jackson and Joe Manganiello.

The distribution and production division of indie Shout Factory has emerged victorious in a bidding war at Cannes Film Festival. Shout Studios plans to release the film in theaters this fall.

“The Kill Room” was directed by Nicol Paone and written by Jonathan Jacobson. The dark comedic-thriller follows an art dealer (Thurman) who teams with a hitman (Manganiello) and his boss (Jackson) for a money laundering scheme. The plan accidentally turns the hired killer into an overnight avant-garde sensation, forcing the dealer to play the art world against the underworld.

“’The Kill Room’ is a sharp, darkly comic evisceration of the art collecting scene, delivered with wily relish by Uma Thurman and director Nicol Paone. We’re confident this will play very well with audiences who like their entertainment both witty and visceral,...

The Crows Break Down Shadow & Bone Season 2
Image
When Shadow & Bone was first adapted by Netflix, many wondered how, and even if, the Crows could fit into the narrative. The Six of Crows duology is highly praised as a step up from the foundational trilogy, but if it weren't for Alina and Mal's adventures, the Grishaverse couldn't exist. Now, two seasons later, the Shadow & Bone series has become a backdoor prequel of sorts for the Crows and their impending heists.

After introducing Jesper Fahey (Kit Young), Kaz Brekker (Freddy Carter), Inej Ghafa (Amita Suman), Nina Zenik (Danielle Galligan), and Matthias (Calahan Skogman), Shadow & Bone season 2 will introduce another key player - Wylan Hendricks, played by Jack Wolfe. The new batch of episodes finds plenty for the Crows to do as their adventures takes them to Shu Han for a memorable heist before they head back to Ravka to help Alina.

What Jesper Fahey's New Abilities Could Mean For Shadow And Bone Season 3
Image
This post contains spoilers for season 2 of Netflix's "Shadow and Bone."

"Oh, I do love a challenge," says Jesper Fahey (Kit Young) in season 1 of "Shadow and Bone," before twirling his dual pistols and blasting away at enemies. An expert sharpshooter who never misses his mark, Jesper is a vital member of the Crows of Ketterdam, who are on a mission to aid Alina Starkov (Jesse Mei Li) in the latest season of the Netflix fantasy series. When not busy gambling his hard-earned Kruge away and hugging Milo the goat, Jesper spends most of his time being effortlessly skillful during tense shootouts and dangerous missions.

While the first season hinted that there's more than meets the eye to Jesper's impressive abilities, season 2 confirms that he's Grisha — a Fabrikator who can manipulate metals, among other things, to change their texture and composition.

Those acquainted with Leigh Bardugo's "Six of...

A Shadow And Bone Spinoff About The Six Of Crows Is Stealthily In The Works
Image
The latest season of Netflix's "Shadow and Bone" just dropped, in which the Crows of Ketterdam play a major role in assisting the Sun Summoner Alina Starkov (Jesse Mei Li). Series showrunner Eric Heisserer has taken an unorthodox route when it comes to adapting Leigh Bardugo's fantasy novel series by combining the storylines of the "Shadow and Bone" trilogy and "The Six of Crows" duology, leading to a complex, intertwining story that directly impacts the fate of the Grishaverse. As the Crows have emerged as one of the strongest aspects of the Netflix adaptation, Heisserer has been quietly developing a "Six of Crows" spin-off series, according to Entertainment Weekly.

Bardugo's duology exclusively focuses on the Crows, who are forced to take up a perilous mission after a drug named jurda parem is on the verge of being circulated across Kerch. The implications of this drug falling into the...

Shadow and Bone Season 2 Episode 1 Review: No Shelter But Me
Ben Barnes, Archie Renaux, and Jessie Mei Li in Shadow and Bone (2021)
Alina and Mal found a bit of peace, but that quickly got foiled when Alina learned her nightmares were real.

Shadow and Bone Season 2 Episode 1 saw Alina dreaming of Kirigan inside the fold while the Crows dealt with their issues.

Pekka managed to kill the woman whose name was on the deed for the Crow Club, which means the club now was his: as was Inej's contract.

Mal and Alina continued their romance, but their romantic interactions kept getting interrupted by multiple outside occurrences.

Both of them managed to get caught, causing them to flee the land they had just arrived in.

We didn't see much of the Zemeni side of things, so hopefully, they get brought back into the future. Just as Alina did, we learned that the Zemeni consider their magic users blessed and don't categorize them.

The Zemeni saved Alina and Mal later in the episode, much to everyone's surprise.

Netflix’s ‘Shadow and Bone’ Is Now a Great Heist Show Hidden Underneath a Fantasy Shell
Image
Strip away all the CGI smoke monsters and cultural pastiches and invented languages from “Shadow and Bone” and it’s still, at its heart, a tale of Chosen One vs. Dark Lord. Now in its Season 2, the Netflix series is the kind of handsomely made fantasy epic that networks could once build a whole lineup around. There’s a dense mythology of lore and palace intrigue and a love triangle or two for good measure. The show debuted in early 2021 in the midst of a TV world still dotted by question marks and pointed to a possible future for effects-driven literary adaptations.

But for all its heroes and villains linked by destiny — living saint Alina Starkov (Jessie Mei Li) mentally communicating with her sworn enemy the Darkling (Ben Barnes) — and CGI centerpieces — a massive dark-matter entity called The Fold that divides an entire nation in two — there’s a better...

Shadow & Bone Spinoff For Six Of Crows In Development, Details Revealed
Image
Shadow and Bone will be getting a Six of Crows spinoff sooner than later if all goes right. The Netflix series is adapted from the young adult novel series by Leigh Bardugo known as the Grishaverse. Although it largely follows the main storyline of the book series, which involves Sun Summoner Alina Starkov's (Jessie Mei Li) adventures with her best friend Mal Oretsev (Archie Renaux). The series also incorporates characters and elements from the spinoff duology Six of Crows, which follows the Crows of Ketterdam.

This week, Entertainment Weekly sat down with the show's creator and co-showrunner Eric Heisserer in the wake of Shadow and Bone season 2's release on March 16. He explained that the reason he split showrunning duties with Daegan Fryklind this season was the fact that he was developing an eight-episode Six of Crows spinoff. If this new Shadow and Bone season performs well, the spinoff will...

‘Shadow and Bone’ Season 2 Review: Netflix Series Juggles Lore and Action for Ultimate YA Satisfaction
Ben Barnes, Archie Renaux, and Jessie Mei Li in Shadow and Bone (2021)
YA fantasy adaptations tend to be dense in mythology and self-seriousness, with so many lands and lineages and plot turns that the newbie viewer might need a drink, or at least a thorough set of recaps. “Shadow and Bone,” returning to Netflix for Season 2 (a feat in itself these days), has all of the standard intricacies. Between Ravka and Fjerda, the Grisha and the Shu, the Barrell and the Fold, there’s a lot to keep track of, and the task can be daunting for novices to navigate.

But “Shadow and Bone” has an ace in the hole that the cardsharps of the Crow Club would appreciate. It rarely forgets to have fun, a quality that can easily get lost amid the spells and brooding that often characterize such enterprises. The series has a swashbuckling spirit and lively wit. It has clever heist plots and barroom brawls. Even as it...

Shadow & Bone Season 2 Review: Strong, Intense & Thrilling Return To The Grishaverse
Image
Warning: This post contains very minor spoilers for Shadow and Bone season 2Shadow and Bone season 1 combined the disparate areas of the Grishaverse — which encapsulates the Shadow and Bone trilogy of books by Leigh Bardugo and everything set in that world, including the Six of Crows duology — rather seamlessly, marrying the plethora of stories together in a way that made sense and elevated the source material. In eight episodes (which were provided for review), Shadow and Bone season 2 manages to do the same.

Far from a sophomore slump, season 2 merges various aspects of Bardugo’s trilogy and parts of the Crows’ story while continuing to revitalize the narrative with a fresh perspective. It’ll still be a familiar story for book readers, but there are enough changes to make it worthwhile and enticing. Adaptations are difficult, and there will always be things left by the wayside, but showrunner Eric Heisserer...

Shadow And Bone Season 2 Review: More Love, More Monsters
Image
Two years after "Shadow and Bone" made its debut on Netflix, the Grishaverse finally returns with season 2 of the fantasy-action-romance hybrid. Based on the books by Leigh Bardugo, this is a show dense with lore that shows no mercy to non-book readers and/or those for whom April 2021 is a distant, foggy memory. It's definitely worth rewatching the first season if you don't want to be floundering in questions like "wait, what's merzost?" and "who the hell are all these people?"

If you don't have time for a rewatch, here are the basics. The world is made up of ordinary people and Grisha, born wizards with power over certain elements. Some can control wind, some can control fire, some can control water, some can manipulate materials, some can hear heartbeats and squish people's internal organs at will. In season 1, orphan Alina Starkov (Jessie Mei Li) learned that she was a...

Four new characters from the Grishaverse play major roles in “Shadow and Bone” Season 2 on Netflix. Like the pair of The Darkling and Alina, these new characters contain contradictions.

Adapted from the last two books in Leigh Bardugo’s “Shadow and Bone” trilogy — “Seige and Storm” and “Ruin and Rising” — with plot points from the “Six of Crows” duology mixed in, the sequel installment of the YA fantasy show introduces new characters and builds upon old concepts, specifically that of identity. Twin Heartrenders Tamar Kir-Bataar (Anna Leong Brophy) and Tolya Yul-Bataar (Lewis Tan) challenge the strict Ravkan identity categories in the fantasy world because have Grisha power to manipulate elements, but they are also just as comfortable using battle axes and swords.

“There’s a lot of duality. So I feel like the twins are a physical representation of duality, they’re two different sides of a coin,” Leong Brophy told TheWrap.

‘The Magic Flute’, With A ‘Harry Potter’ Feel And YA Cred, Hopes To Hit A High Note – Specialty Preview
Image
Shout! Studios presents The Magic Flute by Florian Zigl, executive produced by Roland Emmerich, at 325 theaters with expansion likely. A reimagining of the Mozart opera, it follows a present-day teen sent from London to the Austrian Alps on singing scholarship at the legendary Mozart boarding school. There, he discovers a century old forgotten passageway into the magical world of Mozart’s famed opera.

This Harry Potter-ish adventure fantasy stars Jack Wolfe as Tim Walker, who passes from school into the world of the opera and its many adventures as hero Prince Tamino. Wide releases may be picking up steam and Scream, but in terms of new specialty, and family fare, these isn’t much new competition this weekend.

Melissa Boag, EVP of Family Entertainment at Shout! Studios, hopes it will play with fans of magical adventure, Harry Potter, and classical music. Wolfe is a star of Netflix YA series Shadow & Bone.
