The Future Photo: Nati Levi

Recently screened as part of Tribeca 2023, Noam Kaplan’s latest film, The Future, follows three women whose lives intersect at moments which present different challenges for each of them. Nurit (Reymonde Amsallem) is an Israeli criminal profiler and the designer of a new piece of software which is supposed to be able to identify terrorists by analysing their movements and behaviour. Yaffa (Samar Qupty) is a young Palestinian woman whose assassination of the Minister for Space and Tourism she failed to predict. Then there’s Maor (Dar Zuzovsky), whom Nurit is getting to know with a view to using her services as a surrogate so that she can experience motherhood. Over the course of a few weeks we observe their conversations and the way that they – especially Nurit – change as a result, whilst in the background, an Israeli space venture is attempting to put a man.

Mark Shami grew up making jewelry at his father’s store in New York City’s diamond district, a location for the film Uncut Gems. After years of crafting custom items for friends, Shami founded The M Jewelers 10 years ago in New York and opened his by-appointment L.A. store last year. He calls his brand “a go-to spot for customization and personalization,” noting the “heirloom feel” of the designs (49 to 1,900). Leslie Shampaine and Pip Gilmour‘s feature documentary “Call Me Dancer” will have its world premiere at the Santa Barbara International Film Festival, in competition for best documentary, on Feb. 9, followed by its New York premiere at the Dance on Camera Film Festival at the Lincoln Center on Feb. 10.

The film follows Manish Chauhan, a young and talented street dancer from Mumbai who struggles against his parents’ insistence that he follow a traditional path.When he accidentally walks into an inner-city dance school and encounters curmudgeonly 70-year-old Israeli ballet master Yehuda Maor, a hunger develops within him and he is determined to make it as a professional dancer, but the odds are stacked

against him.

Filmed in India, Israel, the U.K. and the U.S., the dance documentary features original songs by Jay Sean, music by Bangladeshi-American hip-hop artist Anik Khan and a score by British-Indian composer Nainita Desai.

Dramatic details were key to the style on the A-list attendees of Sunday night’s Critics Choice Awards at the Fairmont Century Plaza Hotel. From lush fabrications to a flurry of floral appliqués, a variety of bold colors and an abundance of statement earrings, high fashion and handcraft enjoyed the spotlight on the nominees and presenters of this event from the Critics Choice Association.
