As Emmy nominations voting comes to a close this Monday, UCP and Starz have found one more way to expose their limited series “Gaslit” to potential voters: Free, over-the-air broadcast TV.

The first episode of “Gaslit,” starring Julia Roberts and Sean Penn, will air on NBC-owned TV stations in key markets including New York, Los Angeles and Chicago, this weekend in a final push to expose the series to as many people as possible.

Universal Studio Group’s UCP produces “Gaslit” for Starz. And in a case of Comcast/NBCUniversal synergy, Usg and UCP have turned to their sister NBC broadcast station unit for help. As a result, the first episode of “Gaslit” will air on Knbc/Channel 4 in Los Angeles on Saturday, June 25, at 8 p.m. — in primetime.

In New York (Wnbc), Philadelphia (Wcau), Washington D.C. (Wrc), Boston (Wbts) and Philadelphia (Wcau), the NBC stations will air “Gaslit” at 7 p.

“Gaslit” kicks off Sunday night on Starz, showcasing lesser known stories from those around the Watergate scandal, including outspoken whistleblower Martha Mitchell, the wife of Richard Nixon’s attorney general-turned-campaign manager John Mitchell.

The drama, starring Julia Roberts as Martha and Sean Penn as John, comes from executive producer Robbie Pickering (“Mr. Robot”), who told TheWrap he had been wanting to do a story set in the Nixon era for quite some time.

Starz has unveiled the trailer and key art for “Gaslit,” its limited series that tackles the Watergate scandal. The show focuses on the perspective of Martha Mitchell (Julia Roberts), the wife of Richard Nixon’s attorney general, John Mitchell (Sean Penn). “Gaslit” will debut on Starz’s digital platform at midnight on April 24, with a linear debut the same day at 8 p.m. Et.

Roberts is on fire in the trailer, Arkansas accent and all, as a political storm swirls around her, and Penn is nearly unrecognizable in his prosthetics and hair pieces. Starz on Wednesday announced the new series will premiere Sunday, April 24 across all Starz platforms, including on Starz at 9 Pm Et/Pt in the U.S. and Canada, and will air day and date internationally on the Starzplay premium streaming platform across Europe, Latin America and Japan.

Starz also released footage and stills to show off the dramatic transformations of the cast to fit into their roles.

One of the biggest highlights from their upcoming slate is the political thriller mini-series “Gaslit,” starring Julia Roberts and Sean Penn, which is now scheduled for an April 24 premiere on the cable channel. Starz dropped the first teaser for its Sean Penn and Julia Roberts-led Watergate limited series “Gaslit” on Wednesday, revealing the actors’ on-screen transformations into Attorney General John Mitchell, President Richard Nixon’s most trusted advisor and best friend, and his whistleblower wife Martha Mitchell.

Also announced was the show’s premiere date, which Starz has set for Sunday, April 24 at 9 p.m., the pay TV channel said during its Wednesday presentation at the virtual Television Critics Association press tour.

Starz unveiled the first teaser trailer for their upcoming Watergate limited series “Gaslit” on Wednesday, and viewers would be forgiven for doing a double-take when first seeing Sean Penn as former Attorney General John Mitchell. Penn dons heavy makeup for the role, but he’s not the primary focus of the series – instead that’s to his wife Martha Mitchell, played by Julia Roberts.

Martha Mitchell was the first person to publicly sound the alarm on Nixon’s involvement in Watergate, and as a result she became the focus of an intense White House smear campaign enacted by her own husband meant to discredit her. Her story is the central thrust of “Gaslit,” which will premiere on Sunday, April 24 across all Starz platforms in the U.S. and Canada.

Sean Penn doubled down in an interview with The Independent on his belief that “men have become quite feminized.” The two-time Oscar winner generated headlines earlier this month after telling one newspaper, “I am in the club that believes that men in American culture have become wildly feminized. I don’t think that being a brute or having insensitivity or disrespect for women is anything to do with masculinity, or ever did. But I don’t think that [in order] to be fair to women, we should become them.”

When asked by The Independent to clarify these comments, Penn said, “I think that men have, in my view, become quite feminized. I have these very strong women in my life who do not take masculinity as a sign of oppression toward them. There are a lot of, I think, cowardly genes that lead to people surrendering their jeans and putting on a skirt.

Paramount Pictures has announced it is developing a sequel to 2021’s family-friendly adventure “Clifford the Big Red Dog.” The studio has not disclosed whether the newest installment will play only in theaters or simultaneously on digital platforms, like the original.

The first film premiered in theaters earlier in November and has since generated $34 million at the domestic box office while playing concurrently on Paramount Plus. Though the company didn’t provide any tangible metrics, Paramount says “Clifford the Big Red Dog” has become the nascent streaming service’s most-watched original film to date. It should be noted that Paramount Plus rebranded from CBS All Access last March with limited cinematic offerings, so “Clifford” didn’t have much competition to cement its place as the streamer’s most popular new film.

The live-action family movie based on the 1963 Norman Bridwell children’s classic book, opened on Nov. 10 in theaters and dropped on Paramount+ in homes day and date. The movie has grossed $34.6M stateside to date. Clifford in his first weekend on the studio’s Ott service was the most watched original film to date. No release date has been set yet for the sequel, and it’s yet to be determined whether the film gets a hybrid or exclusive theatrical window.

The news about a Clifford sequel comes in the wake of Paramount greenlighting a sequel to Paw Patrol: The Movie, that movie grossing $130.1M worldwide and buzzed to be a profitable title for the Melrose lot, even with a day and date release stategy on Paramount+ in the U.S.

There were no massive surprises at the box office this weekend as Marvel’s splashy superhero tentpole, Eternals, added $27.5 million in its sophomore outing, holding off a surprisingly strong $16.4 million debut from Paramount’s family-friendly canine film, Clifford the Big Red Dog, atop the domestic charts during an otherwise sleepy weekend. Meanwhile, Kenneth Branagh’s buzzy coming-of-age drama, Belfast, officially entered the awards-season derby in limited release, snagging an eighth-place finish with $1.8 million.

Despite less-than-stellar reviews (it’s the first Marvel film with a “rotten” rating on the Rotten Tomatoes aggregator site) and mediocre word of mouth (based on its soft ‘B’ CinemaScore grade), director Chloe Zhao’s Eternals remained the No. 1 film in North America in its second weekend, despite sliding -61.4% from the previous frame. That sophomore slump places the film between the second-weekend dips of its recent Marvel stablemates Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings...

“Eternals” will keep its crown at the domestic box office, as the Marvel entry is projected to repeat as No. 1 with an estimated $27 million gross in its second weekend.

Should current projections pan out, the MCU entry will fall approximately 62% in its sophomore outing. Measured against the second weekends of other Marvel Studios releases this year, that’s a much steeper drop than the 52% sink of “Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings” and a healthier one than the 67% tumble “Black Widow” took. However, that latter film simultaneously debuted as a rental on Disney Plus through the streamer’s Premier Access program, a release strategy that undoubtedly impacted its ultimate box office performance.

Paramount’s family-friendly adventure “Clifford the Big Red Dog” pulled in a solid $2.3 million on its first day in theaters.

The film, which is playing simultaneously in 3,407 North American cinemas and on the streaming service Paramount Plus, opened on Wednesday to take advantage of the Veterans Day holiday weekend. It’s projected to generate $15 million to $17 million through Sunday, which wouldn’t be a particularly standout start for a property as recognizable as “Clifford.” It’s understandable, though, because children under the age of 12 have only recently been able to get vaccinated against Covid-19, so family crowds have been slow to return to cinemas. Ticket sales for “Clifford” should be on pace with Paramount’s August release of “Paw Patrol,” which opened to $13 million over the traditional weekend while landing concurrently on Paramount Plus.

“Clifford” came in second place on daily charts behind Marvel’s “Eternals,” which brought in $4.3 million on Wednesday.
