Fox has canceled its troubled cop series “Lethal Weapon” after three seasons, Variety has learned.
The show originally starred Clayne Crawford and Damon Wayans as a buddy cop duo, however, Variety reported that the pair were far from friendly and fought regularly off-camera, leading to Crawford’s sacking. Season three continued with Seann William Scott replacing Crawford, however, Wayans announced he was quitting and show, and coupled with a steep decline in ratings, it’s no great surprise that Fox decided to pull the plug.
The show averaged a 0.71 rating in the key 18-49 demographic and just over 3 million total viewers per episode in Season 3, which was a significant dip from the season 2 average rating of 1.0 and average viewership of just over 4 million. Even those numbers represented a pretty substantial decline from season 1, which had an average rating of 1.57 and 6.5 million total viewers.

Stifler’s about to get a “Lethal Weapon.” Fox has ordered a third season of the hit action drama after a last minute scramble to replace the lead role opposite Damon Wayans.
Seann William Scott (from the “American Pie” franchise) has joined the show in his first network series role as a new character who folds into a partnership with Murtaugh (Wayans).
“Seann is a fantastic addition to this already amazing cast,” said Fox Entertainment president Michael Thorn. “’Lethal Weapon’ is packed with action, drama and pure fun and we can’t wait to see Damon and Seann together on screen. It almost didn’t happen. After clashes on set between star Clayne Crawford and Wayans, Crawford was fired — and the show was in jeopardy.

One of the most dramatic storylines this upfront season has come to an end, with American Pie alum Seann William Scott tapped to star opposite Damon Wayans on Fox’s Lethal Weapon. He replaces original co-lead Clayne Crawford, whose option for next season will not be picked up by producer Warner Bros. TV over on-set behavior issues.
With Wayans and Scott as new leading duo, Lethal Weapon has been renewed for a third season about 24 hours before Fox is slated to unveil its fall 2018 schedule to advertisers at its upfront presentation. “Lethal Weapon” has been renewed for a third season at Fox, Variety has learned.
In addition, Seann William Scott will be joining the series following the firing of series co-lead Clayne Crawford. Crawford’s exit from the series came two weeks after it was revealed the former “Rectify” star had twice been reprimanded for his behavior on the “Lethal Weapon” set. In a statement posted on Instagram, Crawford provided details of two on-set incidents for which he was reprimanded, both related to concerns over working conditions.
“Warner Bros. Television has decided not to renew Clayne Crawford’s contract for ‘Lethal Weapon,'” Wbtv said in a statement Sunday. Sources say the studio would not bring the show back to Fox with Crawford attached following the on-set incidents.
The show had been considered a likely renewal, but the mad dash to replace Crawford just days before Fox’s upfront presentation left it in limbo.
