The Best Romances Marvel Changed For The MCU
Image
Although it's heavily based on many of Marvel Comics' best stories and events, the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) isn't an exact one-to-one adaptation of the source material. This is to be expected, especially when the franchise in question is based on decades-old comics. As a result, Marvel changed many of the comics' romances for the big screen.

Some of the McU's romances were so well-received and loved by fans that they completely buried their original versions in the comics. What's more, fans realized that their favorite pairings were drastic improvements over the originals after the fact. As far as Marvel fans were concerned, these MCU romances were the only ones that mattered.

MCU Spoilers ahead!

A live read of selected scenes from all five of the winning scripts will be performed November 9 during the formal awards ceremony at the Academy Museum of Motion Pictures.

The Nicholl Fellowships was established in 1985 through the support of Gee Nicholl in memory of her husband Don Nicholl.

Review: Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings
Image
It’s interesting to note that the two Marvel Cinematic Movies of the fall are the ones that hew furthest away from the source material. In Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings, out now in both streaming and disc, it makes the most sense because the original Master of Kung-Fu comic was very much a product of its time. Capitalizing on the kung fu craze of the early 1970s, it also melded the comic with Sax Rohmer’s Fu Manchu, the epitome of the Yellow Menace, a pulp magazine staple.

But, boiled down, the story is about fathers and sons and legacy, a solid framework that writers Dave Callaham, Andrew Lanham developed with co-writer/director Destin Daniel Cretton. While jettisoning the stereotypes, we have instead Xu Wenwu (Tony Keung), a near-immortal being who has amassed power and wealth across the centuries but doesn’t find happiness until he...

Shang-Chi Smashes Labor Day Box Office Record, Dethroning Rob Zombie's Halloween
Image
The Marvel Cinematic Universe's newest hero is leading the fight for theaters, as Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings battles its way to an impressive $71 million over 3 days, smashing both Labor Day records and expectations in its opening weekend. The Marvel movie managed to dethrone Rob Zombie's Halloween which has held the Labor Day weekend record for 14 years. Shang-Chi has so far grossed $83.5 million in the United States and Canada, and $56.2 million in other territories, for a worldwide total of $139.7 million, with several markets, including the United Kingdom, having their largest opening days since the start of the ongoing circumstances.

This will no doubt come as a huge relief to Disney and Marvel Studios, as well as theaters both nationwide and globally. Box office numbers have been touch-and-go throughout the current situation, and while there have been some promising releases such as Godzilla vs. Kong and Shang-Chi's fellow Avenger Black Widow,...

Marvel Studios has big plans for Shang-Chi (Simu Liu). If it wasn’t clear from the latest marketing for Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings, introducing the titular hero as “Marvel’s new Avenger,” then the film itself, directed by Destin Daniel Cretton and written by Cretton, David Callaham and Andrew Lanham is certainly evidence as it positions Shang-Chi as central to the MCU and its larger mythos going forward. Film Review: 'Shang-Chi' Proves to be a Master of Multiple Genres
Chicago – There is an undeniable pleasure in watching films that don’t take themselves too seriously. Nothing against the Nolans and Snyders of the comic book universe because they provide an essential service to the film community with their more grounded, dramatic approach.

Rating: 4.5/5.0

Even so, there is something about the Gunns and Waititis that reminds us that these types of films should be fun, even if they have little to no significance in a real-world setting, mostly leaving any social or political commentary buried in subtext if it’s even present at all. In most cases, this approach is the safe one, even if it sometimes robs a film of the potential to be more. In this case, Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings toes the line carefully, delivering exactly the energy we expect from a Marvel film and more, even if it leans too much into...

Brie Larson Welcomes Shang Chi Star Simu Liu Into the MCU
Image
Simu Liu is officially a part of the Marvel Cinematic Universe with the release of Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings in theaters, and Captain Marvel herself was right there to welcome both the actor and his character into the fold. Directed by Destin Daniel Cretton, the new movie is written by Cretton, Dave Callaham, and Andrew Lanham. Liu stars in the lead role as the titular superhero, and because he hasn't appeared in any prior Marvel movies, it's Shang-Chi's debut in the MCU.

On Twitter, Simu Liu recently posted a photo of himself posing in front of a large billboard promoting the movie in his hometown, clearly humbled by the experience. Soon after, he was greeted with a response tweet from Larson giving him a warm welcome. In her tweet, the Captain Marvel star said, "Welcome to the MCU, Shang-Chi. Congratulations, @SimuLiu."

Welcome to the MCU, Shang-Chi.

Movie Review: Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings
Image
The latest offering from Marvel Studios is Shang-Chi and The Legend of the Ten Rings. Despite the oppressiveness of the title, this film is one of the breeziest and remarkably entertaining martial-arts laden superhero films you may ever have the pleasure of seeing (and actually enjoying).

The story follows its title character, Shang-Chi (Simu Liu), as he confronts the demons of his past after he is forced to reenter the dark underbelly of the Ten Rings organization. Shang-Chi is joined in his adventures by his longtime friend, Katy (Awkwafina), who manages to play her character quite well off of, and without being overshadowed by, the considerable martial arts skills of the lead actor.

Simply put, there is a lot going on in this film and it is quite difficult to absorb it all in one viewing. But, somehow, director Destin Daniel Cretton – along with fellow co-writers, David Callaham and Andrew Lanham...

‘Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings’ Film Review: Marvel’s Martial-Arts Saga Nails the Characters and the Kicks
Tim Roth, Michelle Yeoh, Tony Leung Chiu-wai, Benedict Wong, Meng'er Zhang, Simu Liu, Awkwafina, and Florian Munteanu in Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings (2021)
This review of “Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings” was first published on August 23.

Marvel Comics creators Steve Englehart and Jim Starlin originally conceived martial-arts hero Shang-Chi as a loose composite of the imagery and mythologies of Bruce Lee, Caine from “Kung Fu” (whom Lee created), and Sax Rohmer’s pulp villain Dr. Fu Manchu. If Marvel Studios has thus far made slow progress in developing solo adventures for its many superheroes of color, it takes another successful stride, if not quite as sizable as “Black Panther,” with “Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings,” a film that builds simultaneously on the lexicon of 50 years of Hong Kong action films and the thematic boilerplate of MCU origin stories.

Simu Liu (“Kim’s Convenience”) injects an earnest, charming humility to the character’s introduction into Marvel’s world of larger than life conflicts, while Tony Leung and Michelle Yeoh...

Shang-Chi 2 Plans and Beyond Teased by Marvel Boss Kevin Feige
Image
Marvel Studios President Kevin Feige is already thinking about a sequel to upcoming MCU outing Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings. The baseball cap-loving boss believes that, based on early reactions, there is a lot of potential with not just the title character, but the supporting cast too, meaning we could be seeing a lot from Shang-Chi and the gang in the McU's future.

"The early reactions to the characters and to [the movie] itself gives me great hope that people will want to see more of these characters. We certainly have many ideas of where to take them and where to put them. And as exactly as you say, what's so fun, we know the movie's working when it's not just the title character that people ask about, but it is the co-stars or the supporting players that people ask about. And in this movie in particular, that's heartening because we think they're spectacular,...

Shang-Chi: The Legend of the Ten Rings Review
Rachel Weisz, Scarlett Johansson, Ray Winstone, David Harbour, O-T Fagbenle, Olga Kurylenko, and Florence Pugh in Black Widow (2021)
You can forget Black Widow as a bit of a mundane blip in the Marvel matrix. Marvel Chief Kevin Feige alongside filmmaker Destin Daniel Cretton has introduced the latest superhero into their vast empire with a seismic blast that will have you transfixed for its entirety.

‘Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings’ Review: Marvel Gives Lesser-Known Asian Hero the A-List Treatment
Image
Shang-who? The most obscure Marvel Cinematic Universe character to get his own stand-alone movie to date, the comic book mega-company’s “Master of Kung Fu” may not be a household name, but you wouldn’t know that from “Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings,” a flashy, Asian-led visual effects extravaganza that gives the second-tier hero the same over-the-top treatment that big-timers like Hulk and Thor typically get. The result broadens the brand’s spectrum of representation once again, offering audiences of Asian descent the kind of empowerment for which “Black Panther” paved the way a few years back.

Whether in print or on screen, Marvel has consistently been a step ahead of culture at large, ensuring that women, people of color and even queer characters feature prominently in its properties. As social pressures motivated Hollywood to diversify its roster, Marvel didn’t have to look far to produce...

Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings chronicles the story of Shang-Chi, a skilled martial artist who was trained at a young age to be an assassin by his father Wenwu. After leaving the nefarious Ten Rings organization and opting to live a normal life in San Francisco, Shang-Chi is soon drawn back into the clandestine world of the Ten Rings and is forced to confront the past he thought he had left behind.

Shang-Chi Confirmed for Exclusive Theatrical Debut Despite Rising Covid Concerns
Image
Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings will make its MCU debut exclusively to theaters and not simultaneously on Disney+, Disney CEO Bob Chapek has now confirmed. However, the Marvel outing will mark the studio's first release with the now 45-day theatrical window in place, meaning that Disney will likely release Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings to their streaming platform and DVD/Blu-ray as soon as October 18.

The release of Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings is of course unlike that of fellow Marvel superhero Black Widow, whose standalone movie was moved to a simultaneous theatrical and Disney+ Premier Access release after a series of delays caused by the ongoing global situation. Chapek has explained why this release strategy is not possible for Shang-Chi saying, "We think it's actually going to be an interesting experiment for us, because it only has a 45-day window for us.

The Mandarin's Reinvention in Shang-Chi Is Not What Marvel Fans Are Expecting
Image
Marvel's upcoming martial arts epic Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings will not only introduce audiences to the McU's newest superhero, it also plans to re-introduce the villainous leader of the Ten Rings, The Mandarin. Following the controversial take on the Marvel supervillain in Iron Man 3, fans have been wondering ever since whether he would return in a more familiar form. However, while Marvel are doing The Mandarin for real this time, co-writer Dave Callaham has teased some surprises along the way...

"Our version of the character is not The Mandarin in the way that people are expecting him to be. 'The Mandarin' is a title that has been applied to him in the past by people that don't understand his culture. But he's a much deeper character than I think a lot of people would expect."

The Mandarin's appearance in the 2013 Iron Man threequel was met...

Abomination Vs. Wong in Shang-Chi Confirmed by Kevin Feige
Image
One of the major talking, and likely pausing, points from the latest trailer for Marvel's Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings features a cloaked figure battling a giant monster in a cage during what looks like a super-powered fight club. Based on their brief appearance, many had speculated that the two fighters in question were none other than Abomination, not seen since 2008's The Incredible Hulk, and Doctor Strange character Wong. Well, Marvel Boss Kevin Feige is here to fuel the excitement for the debut adventure of Shang-Chi, confirming that yes, it is indeed Abomination and Wong tearing it up inside the cage.

"Some fans said, 'This looks like a character they hadn't seen in many years named The Abomination, fighting a character that looks like Wong. And I can say that the reason it looks like that is because that is Abomination fighting Wong."

'Nuff said.

It was a big night in Hollywood as the 92nd Annual Academy Awards were announced from the heart of Los Angeles at the Dolby Theatre. There were plenty of surprises in store leading up to the big reveal for Best Picture of 2020. Joker and 1917 were the front runners, with Parasite a long shot favorite, but in the end Bong Joon Ho's Parasite swept up at this year's Oscars with Academy Awards for Best Picture, Best Director, Best Original Screenplay and Best Foreign Language Film.

This year's Oscars offered plenty of unexpected twists and turns, though most of the awards played out just as many suspected and predicted they would.

The Academy Awards went without a host for the second time, following last year's first hostless Oscars in over thirty years. There were some big presenters on hand to handle the show, and present the night's coveted award to each of the winners.
