MaryAnn’s quick take… Unfocused like a 1970s cast-of-thousands disaster flick, and with little point beyond engaging in bland and easy propagandistic cheering. Boston deserves better. I’m “biast” (pro): have enjoyed Peter Berg and Mark Wahlberg’s previous collaborations
I’m “biast” (con): nothing
(what is this about? see my critic’s minifesto)
There are likely hundreds of amazing, moving stories to be told about the 2013 bombing at the finish line of Boston’s annual marathon… and dang if Patriots Day — named after the local holiday on which the bombing occurred — doesn’t seem to want to tell all of them all at once.
Patriots Day barely introduces us to one set of characters before jumping away to another.
Director and screenwriter (with Matt Cook and Joshua Zetumer) Peter Berg might have been more successful zooming in on star Mark Wahlberg’s composite cop character Tommy Saunders...

Chicago – In the context of history, and the way information is consumed these days, the Boston Marathon Bombing in 2013 seems both like yesterday and a long time ago. Director Peter Berg’s “Patriots Day” is the first film account of that horrid week, and features Mark Wahlberg.
Rating: 3.5/5.0
Wahlberg, along with Ben Affleck and Matt Damon, are the unofficial show biz mayors of Boston, and inspired a wicked parody by Seth Meyers called “Boston Accents.” The subject matter of “Patriot Days” creates an immunity towards commentary on the Boston accents in the movie, but there are still a few moments that are reminders (seriously, download that sketch on YouTube). Peter Berg (“Friday Night Lights”) is a yeoman director who tells a straightforward story, and succeeds in re-creating the events of that week without too much hyperbole. It was a frightening time for Boston and the country, but the results of...

Go figure. Peter Berg and Mark Wahlberg seem to bring out the very best in each other. Between Lone Survivor and now Patriots Day (Deepwater Horizon as well, to a lesser extent), the pair have found a niche in true life drama and heroism. This new film is their best yet, and actually one of 2016’s better works. It’s threatening to score a spot on my year end top ten list, which is something. Emotional, thrilling, and a seamless blend of history/action, this is a special movie. It deserves to find a large audience this week when it starts to hit theaters. The film is a dramatized look at the events surrounding the Boston Marathon bombing in 2013. In short, the events leading up to the terrorist attack and its aftermath are depicted, including the city-wide manhunt to find the people behind it. The protagonist is a composite character...

The facts are all-too-clearly etched in our minds: On Patriots' Day, April 15, 2013, near the finish line of the Boston marathon, two pressure cooker bombs exploded about 12 seconds apart, killing three civilians and injuring an estimated 264 others causing the loss of blood and limbs. The subsequent 100-hour manhunt for the terrorist bombers, Chechen brothers Tamerlan and Dzhokhar Tsarnaev, is enacted in Patriots Day, a raw, riveting, emotionally wrenching docudrama from Peter Berg and producer-star Mark Wahlberg. The director and his Boston-homeboy star, who collaborated laudably on the true-life dramas of 2013's...

After bringing us Deepwater Horizon earlier this year, director Peter Berg has teamed up once again with Mark Wahlberg for Patriots Day, which tells the riveting story of the 2013 Boston Marathon bombings and its aftermath.
Wahlberg stars in the film as Sgt. Tommy Saunders, just one of the many Boston police and first responders on the scene. Patriots Day follows the events of the horrific tragedy and how Saunders, Boston Police Commissioner Ed Davis (John Goodman), Massachusetts Gov. Deval Patrick (Michael Beach) and Special FBI investigator Richard DesLauriers (Kevin Bacon) piece together the evidence and put together a city-wide manhunt to find the terrorists behind it: brothers Tamerlin (Themo Melikidze) and Dzhokhar (Alex Wolff) Tsarnaev.
During the recent press day for the film, we sat down with Beach and Michelle Monaghan, who plays Saunders’ wife, to talk about their riveting new project. They discussed why the timing was right to make Patriots Day,...

Filmmaker Peter Berg is not in the business of subtlety. He creates action films at a human scale, and Patriots Day is just that, trying to do too much in its 133 minutes. For much of the lead-up to the Boston Marathon Bombing in 2013, the film patches its artificiality with archival footage from the day and concocted footage that looks like it had been. Cobbled together from multiple projects on the subject, Patriots Day is a curious case of a gritty piece of work wrapped in a traditional action flick full of artificial, crowd-pleasing one-liners and manipulative threads documenting the human cost of the bombing. A baby is saved from the attack by a Boston police officer; a couple is separated and taken to different hospitals; the tragic deaths, including a seven-year-old child. This film crams a Netflix mini-series’ worth of material into a sweeping theatrical feature that attempts to be...

With Patriots Day, Peter Berg translates national tragedy to cinema screens with power and purpose for the second time this year – yet the question for many is with wounds still healing, do we really need to be subjected to recreations of a hateful act still fresh in our nation’s history? Personally, I wasn’t in attendance, instead watching live-feeds from my desk at work until the manhunt concluded days later, but cries of exploitation are hard to discredit. As a filmmaker, Berg specializes in making audiences feel something, by finding the human heartbeat in stories – but that doesn’t change subject and reality. “Too soon,” they cried, with fair cause.
So does Patriots Day pay respect to the city of Boston and those strong, resilient survivors who wouldn’t let hate win? From an outsider’s perspective, yes it does. Berg makes Patriots Day about a state and its people,...

There’s a lot to be said about 2016, including the fact that it brings not one, but two new Peter Berg movies, all within the last three months. While his first contribution, Deepwater Horizon, unfortunately (and rather undeservedly) didn’t make a huge impact, his next film, Patriots Day, promises something a little more rewarding. At least, if all the quotes thrown inside this new, final trailer are any indication of the final product.
Just like Lone Survivor and Deepwater Horizon, Patriots Day stars Mark Wahlberg and will dramatize a real-life tragedy, this time recreating the Boston Marathon bombing that occurred on April 15th, 2013, which resulted in the death of three citizens and an estimated 264 injured civilians. Berg’s acclaimed film focuses not only on the attack itself, but the four day manhunt that ensued afterwards. It’ll also follow how the people of Boston came together throughout this horrific incident.

It’s almost impossible to extricate the Boston Marathon bombings of April 15, 2013 from the city itself. From the media coverage after the explosions to the ensuing manhunt that captured international attention, all eyes were fixed on the city, both in its aftermath and its response. To memorialize the efforts of first responders, law enforcement and ordinary citizens, Peter Berg’s “Patriots Day” distills its focus to the principal players. Making this select cross-section of newsmakers may not have captured the entire city, but the film executes those landmark moments on the bombings timeline with haunting tenacity.

For the third time in as many years, director Peter Berg and Mark Wahlberg will collaborate to present another true-life account of heroism, tragedy and the power of the human spirit. In 2013, it was Lone Survivor that brought both creatives together, and the pair have since reteamed for the white-knuckle ride known as Deepwater Horizon.
Touting an all-star ensemble and some truly edge-of-your-seat action sequences, Horizon was arguably better than it had any right to be, documenting the true tale of heroism buried beneath the messy Bp oil spill of 2010. Their latest project is called Patriots Day, one poised to shift the spotlight three years forward.

Patriots Day, CBS Films and Lionsgate’s real-life drama based on the marathon bombings that rocked the city of Boston three years ago, is already a crowded affair. But we now have word that the studios have recruited one final trio to feature in Peter Berg’s Oscar-tipped thriller.
It’s quite the threesome, too, headlined by Melissa Benoist of Supergirl fame – on board to portray Katherine Russell, wife to one of the two convicted terrorisits, Tamerlan Tsarnaev – Khandi Alexander and Jake Picking (The Way, Way Back). In terms of the latter duo, Alexander is playing a law enforcement interrogator, while Picking is attached to the role of MIT officer Sean Collier.
