Top Chef star Shirley Chung went to Instagram to share her news with fans. She was diagnosed with stage 4 tongue cancer in May.

She began by saying, “Since last year December, I had a series of dental issues, I bit my tongue severely; I fractured my tooth and had to extract it and get an implant… we thought it was because I am a heavy teeth grinder. And I was too busy to see a Emt specialist.

Top Chef Season 11 and 14 alum Shirley Chung has revealed she has Stage 4 tongue cancer and is currently undergoing treatments. Chung, was a finalist in Top Chef Season 11 and competed again in Season 14, shared the difficult news in an Instagram post on July 26 that showed the celebrity chef shaving her head. The caption revealed that her treatment options were to surgically remove “100 percent” of her tongue or undergo radiation and chemotherapy. Selena + Restaurant, premiering May 2 on Food Network, will take viewers into the kitchens of six buzzy L.A. restaurants.

The pop star and Only Murders in the Building Emmy nominee, who hosted four seasons of Selena + Chef for Max as well as four-part series Selena + Chef: Home for the Holidays for Food Network, is launching Selena + Restaurant.

Bravo has greenlit “Top Chef Amateurs,” to be hosted by longtime “Top Chef” judge Gail Simmons. Production on the show will begin later this month in Portland, Ore., where the next season of “Top Chef” has been filming under Covid-19 protocols. “Top Chef Amateurs” will be produced in a similar production bubble, and will premiere next year.

On each episode of “Top Chef Amateurs,” two home cooks will compete against one another, duel-style, in famous challenges from previous seasons of the original show. There will be an interactive component this week, in which fans can vote on Twitter, tagging @BravoTopChef, to decide whether the classic challenge seven deadly sins (a seven-course meal inspired by the sins) or the aphrodisiac challenge will be featured in the new competition show. Voting takes place Tuesday through Friday, and the winning challenge will be announced on Oct. 26.

Somehow I missed the fact that a new “Top Chef” season – No. 16, to be exact — premiered two weeks ago. Thank goodness, my DVR remembered for me. While “The Great British Baking Show” has taken over the Bravo staple’s prime seat at the dining table of my heart when it became available on these shores, “Top Chef” is a close second in fulfilling what I crave in a cooking competition show.

The Food Network’s pantry of watching options continues to entice me. But they rarely fully satisfy my appetite. “Iron Chef America” is too beholden to a ticking clock and, like many food-related contests, is contained in a single space. I like the chef judges on “Chopped,” especially Alex Guarnascelli, but the format only occasionally allows for surprises and twists. Top Chef season 14 came to an end Thursday night in its typical nail-biting fashion, with returning chefs Brooke Williamson and Shirley Chung both serving up epic meals in their final challenge (and us stress-eating the whole way through).
