Gavemic Ary is a distinguished Indian cinematographer, born and raised in Pondicherry. His love for photography began at age 11 in his grandfather's photo studio. After spending three years in Dharamshala, Gavemic returned to Pondicherry to further his passion for photography. Influenced by P. C. Sreeram and Santosh Sivan, he entered the film industry, learning the basics from Sreeram and refining his skills under Sivan from 2001 to 2004. During this time, he worked on documentaries, feature films, and commercials, gaining valuable experience in various aspects of filmmaking.
In 2005, Gavemic ventured into freelancing, assisting leading cinematographers on various projects, including commercials and films such as Khaleja (2010), directed by Trivikram Srinivas. Between 2007 and 2012, he worked independently on corporate films, documentaries, and commercials, carving a niche for himself in the industry.
Gavemic made his debut as a cinematographer with the 2012 independent film *Mastram*, which received acclaim for its fresh visual style and distinctive aesthetics. His major breakthrough came with Jigarthanda (2014), directed by Karthik Subbaraj, where his inventive use of lighting and camera techniques played a significant role in the film's success. The movie went on to win several awards, including National Awards, and was celebrated for its innovative cinematography.
Gavemic continued to expand his portfolio with projects like Nil Battey Sannata (2016) and Bareilly Ki Barfi (2017). In Nil Battey Sannata, he used natural light to create an intimate visual language, while in Bareilly Ki Barfi, his vibrant color palettes and evocative imagery captured the charm of small-town India.
Recent works include Bunty Aur Babli 2 (2021) and Bachchhan Paandey (2022), where Gavemic experimented with new visual styles and techniques. His additional work on Mission: Chapter 1 (2024) further demonstrated his adaptability and expertise in diverse genres.
