So, with that sentiment and because of my love for any media about the complex nature of politics we compiled a list of the best political TV shows that you should watch right now.

Welcome to Emmy Experts Typing, a weekly column in which Gold Derby editors and Experts Joyce Eng and Christopher Rosen discuss the Emmy race — via Slack, of course. This week, we discuss the limited field, where the lead categories went down to five slots.
Christopher Rosen: Hello, Joyce! As Emmy voting continues, what better time than now to look again at the limited series race? This one got a lot more interesting once “Shōgun” exited the premises, and then again last week when it was revealed there would only be five nominees in the lead actor and actress races due to a shortage of submissions. We updated our Emmy predictions this week — I apologize again to those angered Selenators, many of whom directed their ire toward my Twitter mentions after I dropped her from my picks — and differed on where the Best Limited/TV Movie Actress contest might land. Like most,...

Awkwafina rose to fame with her idiosyncratic, trademark comedic stylings. Then she wowed us all with her against-type performance in Lulu Wang‘s “The Farewell,” which very nearly earned her an Oscar nomination back in 2019. She delivers another quiet, subdued role in the Hulu telefilm “Quiz Lady,” which could well reap her a career-first Emmy bid for acting.
Awkwafina plays the reserved Anne, who must compete on the game show she is obsessed with alongside her loud, abrasive, estranged sister Jenny (Sandra Oh) in order to pay off their mom’s gambling debts. The result is a heartwarming comedy that is one of the sweet treats of the year. Critics loved the movie and singled out Awkafina for particular praise.
Tania Hussain (Collider) exclaimed: “While Awkwafina has shown audiences a whacky, often one-dimensional side in some of her roles like the sitcom ‘Awkwafina Is Nora From Queens,’ she is able...

At first, Simon was going to direct it. I wanted that to happen. We wanted Billie Eilish to be in it, or something.”The movie stars Samara Weaving in the lead role, and she suspects Eilish...

As the clock inched toward midnight at the Vanity Fair Oscars party (and on the eight-month long “Barbie” press tour), Greta Gerwig gleefully danced the night away.
With an In-n-Out burger in one hand and a cocktail in the other, Gerwig grooved to Dua Lipa’s hit “Dance the Night” with another one of her Barbies, Hari Nef, who sported a pink feathered Balenciaga jacket with a sizable train.
For this last hurrah, Gerwig swapped the pink boiler suit she famously wore while directing the $1.4 billion blockbuster (and the stunning Gucci gown she wore at the ceremony) for a black open tuxedo jacket, skipping a shirt in favor of draping Boucheron diamonds on her neck and chest.
Shortly after the “Barbie” song ended, the director was ready to take a load off, making her way to an open seat on the outdoor courtyard, because it had been a long day...

Film Independent posted up on Santa Monica Beach on Sunday to present its annual Spirit Awards, the biggest party for the independent film scene. While cameras captured the live show for a stream on YouTube, The Hollywood Reporter was inside the iconic white tent on the beach to bring you all the action you might’ve missed.
Hey, Wait for Me
Aidy Bryant kicked off the telecast with a well-received monologue as she took on her very first gig fronting an awards show. In the early moments of Bryant’s debut, nominees Greta Lee (Past Lives) and Andrew Scott (All of Us Strangers) were seen entering the tent and hustling their way to their respective tables as two of the last stars to get seated. It was a good thing, too, as Bryant then zeroed in on Lee in particular during her faux-roasting jokes. “Greta, you are a slob and...

Another big award show took place this weekend (in addition to the SAG Awards), the Film Independent Spirit Awards, which celebrates indie film and TV. One thing about this awards show is that their idea of independent sometimes makes me scratch my head a bit, with HBO’s big-budget The Last of Us nominated a whole bunch in the TV category, along with Netflix’s Beef and several other streaming shows, which I’m not sure one could call independent. For films, there’s a $30 million budget cap. For TV, I’m honestly not sure what the benchmark is because Last of Us was notoriously an expensive show to shoot, costing at least $100 million.
Indeed, The Last of Us won some key awards on the TV side, winning Best Supporting Performance (for Nick Offerman) and Best Breakthrough Performance (for Keivonn Montreal Woodard). Over on the film side, American Fiction and...

It’s been a big start to 2024 for Colman Domingo and Ayo Edebiri who — after earning their first Oscar nomination and Emmy win, respectively — lead the pack of film and TV nominees for the 55th NAACP Image Awards.
Domingo is nominated for three awards: outstanding actor in a motion picture for “Rustin,” outstanding supporting actor for “The Color Purple” and entertainer of the year, the ceremony’s top prize.
Edebiri is nominated for outstanding supporting actress for “The Bear” and guest actress for “Abbott Elementary.” Victoria Monét received the most nominations in the music recording categories, earning six nods including outstanding new artist. The “Jaguar II” hitmaker is followed closely by Usher, who earned five nominations including entertainer of the year.
Fantasia Barrino, Halle Bailey and Keke Palmer — three multihyphenate talents who happened to share the screen with Domingo and Usher this year — round out the nominees for that award.

In a normal year, the 2023 Emmy Awards would have actually taken place in 2023. But last year was anything but normal in Hollywood, and the WGA and SAG-AFTRA strikes caused the award ceremony’s postponement to January 15, 2024.
Fans of Succession, The Bear, and Beef had a lot to celebrate as Emmy voters threw most of the awards in their direction. Succession and The Bear tied with six wins each, and Beef wasn’t far behind with five.
Highlights included Christina Applegate’s surprise appearance on stage to a standing ovation, Carol Burnett presenting to Quinta Brunson (the first Black actress to win as Lead Actress in a Comedy since 1981), and Niecy Nash-Betts’ powerful acceptance speech for Dahmer. There were also cast reunions and Sir Elton John finally received the E portion of Egot for his Farewell From Dodger Stadium special.

Way back in (checks notes) July last year, we reported on the Emmy nominations, noting that the strikes could delay it. Welp, delay it they did, and the 2023 ceremony has just happened in Los Angeles on Monday night. The ceremony, hosted by actor and comedian Anthony Anderson, had little reference to the strikes, but did dig back into TV history given that it was the 75th ceremony. Recent history, though, was more on voters' minds as Beef, Succession and The Bear continued their small screen awards domination.
Succession and The Bear nabbed six trophies each across acting, directing and writing categories, while Beef took home five. Other winners included Jennifer Coolidge (for The White Lotus) and Dahmer — Monster: The Jeffrey Dahmer Story's Niecy Nash-Betts.

The 2024 Screen Actors Guild Awards TV nominations were announced January 10. While Gold Derby correctly predicted 75% of the nominees, more than a few seemingly safe bets failed to materialize (see the complete list of nominations). Scroll down to see our list of the most stunning SAG Awards nominations snubs.
Just a few days after coming up short on their latest Golden Globe bids, “Only Murders in the Building” pair Martin Short and Meryl Streep received no individual love from their SAG colleagues but did earn conciliatory mentions as members of the comedy series’ ensemble. Similarly, both Sam Claflin and Riley Keough of “Daisy Jones & the Six” were kept out of the solo limited series races.
While we did get Best TV Drama Actress completely right, we never saw the omission of “Succession” actor Jeremy Strong coming, especially since three of his male cast mates were individually recognized. Also left out...

Goodbye, Christmas and New Year’s. Hello, awards season!
The Golden Globes are upon us, and that means the festivities kick off with W Magazine’s annual Friday night soiree toasting its Best Performances Issue. Expect to see well-heeled, A-List celebrities mix and mingle elbow-to-elbow in the penthouse suite of the Chateau Marmont.
That same evening, Jon Hamm, Willem Dafoe and Wilmer Valderrama will be among the celebs at the Golden Globes Foundation Dinner helping to present $5 million in grant awards to 96 non-profits.
In the past, studios and networks threw lavish affairs in separate ballrooms at the Beverly Hilton immediately following the Globes, but things have slowed down in recent years due to the Covid pandemic and controversies that rocked the HFPA. Instead, there are smaller affairs being thrown at venues throughout Los Angeles in the nights leading up to the Globes and immediately following the big show.
