This time around, he’s bringing the horrors of war back home as a soldier’s encounter with the unexplained threatens the lives of everyone around him.

Where to Watch ‘Daybreak’: Netflix
Part of what made “Daybreak” an enjoyable season of TV is that it mostly put its zombies in the background. The Netflix adaptation of the Brian Ralph graphic novel certainly had other things on its mind: fourth-wall breaks, telestrated maps, and a few other devices noted here. It’s set in a not-too-distant world where a sophisticated explosive bioweapon has targeted adults, leaving kids unaffected (unless you count the destruction of buildings and the layer of washed-out permadust covering nearly everything in sight). In “Daybreak,” the only zombies are the former parents and teachers and authority figures, grown people reduced to muttering “ghoulies” who just amble around muttering unless they’re provoked.
If the high-school characters in “Daybreak” see themselves as the star of their own story, it’s because they’re pretty much right. But for a world without parents,...

It’s a peculiarity of Michael Caine’s bluff Cockney star persona that he could have plausibly played Fagin in any adaptation of “Oliver Twist” over the last 50-odd years; it’s an unfortunate failure of judgment that he has chosen to finally do so in “Twist.” Nominally updating Charles Dickens’ much-filmed yarn of crime, punishment and improvised family to the streets and rooftops of 21st-century London, Martin Owen’s film instead feels instantly, even desperately, outmoded, using all the graffiti, parkour and streetwear it can to disguise the fact that it has no fresh angle on the material at all — merely a heist-by-numbers subplot straight out Guy Ritchie’s drafts bin, welded to Dickens’ coming-of-age narrative with all the poetry of a press release for a brand collaboration.

"To pull this job off, you'll need a twist." Saban FIlms has released an official trailer for a new twist on the Charles Dickens' classic Oliver Twist called Twist, of course. The film is a modern day take on the story, set in London, this time about a gifted graffiti artist who joins a street gang headed by Caine's Fagin. This was originally released by Sky Cinema in the UK last year, and it was panned by critics over there, but opens anyway in the US this July for whoever is still interested. The film stars Michael Caine, Rita Ora, Sophie Simnett, Jason Maza, Franz Drameh, with David Walliams and Lena Headey and introducing Raff Law. Unfortunately it also includes Noel Clarke, who has multiple sexual assault allegations against him. The rest of the film looks quite good, though a tad on-the-nose and cheesy with all the updated London crime-thriller tropes and flashy shots.

It’s a tale we’ve seen told before, but never quite like this. To mark the release of Sky Cinema’s Twist, we had the pleasure of speaking to its leading stars, ranging from Rita Ora and Sophie Simnett, to newcomer Raff Law and Franz Drameh. With Ora and Simnett we speak about the former’s move into acting, as well, of course, The Masked Singer. Simnett speaks about the experience working with Michael Caine, and her enjoyment shooting this movie.
Raff Law talks about how pleased he was that somebody took a punt on him with this major leading role, and talks about the importance of breaking free from being just ‘Jude Law’s son’ and carving his own path, despite learning as much from his dad, and his mother Sadie Frost, as he can. And finally with Drameh we talk about his character, the appeal to working with director Martin Owen again,...

Rafferty Law’s young hero is a graffiti artist and Michael Caine’s Fagin an ex-art dealer in this under-par update of Oliver Twist
Michael Caine already has the distinction of appearing in what many believe is the greatest Dickens adaptation of all time: The Muppets Christmas Carol, in which he played Scrooge. Now he is Fagin in this try-hard modern reboot of Oliver Twist, in which the plot and indeed meaning of the original has been jettisoned, leaving few of the characters – though the original’s tiny, sticky-fingered tealeaves are now promoted to supercool young adulthood. It never really comes to life and there’s a kids-tv feel to most of it, although the free-running scenes are watchable enough, and Caine’s disguise as a grumpy Russian plutocrat with a fake moustache raises some laughs.

After leaving us with a bombshell season 1 ending, Daybreak won't live to see another day.
The genre-bending series Daybreak fought off countless ghoulies during its 10-episode first season, but it couldn’t avoid a cold death at the hands of its streamer. Netflix canceled the post-apocalyptic series, which was only released on October 24th.
Series co-creator and executive producer Aron Eli Coleite addressed the cancelation in a statement to fans, who he dubbed “daybreakers,” on Twitter: “No one is as heartbroken as we are that we can’t share more of this ride with you. Daybreak, Netflix’s post-apocalyptic dramedy starring Matthew Broderick, will not be getting a second season. Series co-creator/executive producer Aron Eli Coleite revealed the news of the series’ cancelation on Twitter. It comes a month and a half after Daybreak launched on Oct. 24.

[Note: The following interview contains spoilers for the Netflix series “Daybreak,” including the ending of Season 1.]
If you watched the first episode of “Daybreak” and had a pretty good idea of the identity of Baron Triumph, the leather-clad terror of a high schooler-populated post-apocalyptic Glendale, that wasn’t an accident. For series co-creator Aron Eli Coleite, the surprises across this season of the new Netflix show were always going to arrive in a slightly different way.
“TV is making a magic trick. By breaking the fourth wall and by talking directly to the audience and kind of telling them the magic trick that we’re going to do early on, you get to accept it,” Coleite told IndieWire. “Being direct with our audience and being like, ‘No, Angelica’s going to tell you exactly what we’re doing and that’s gonna help guide you and lead you into the world.’ We’re not lying to the audience.

Netflix's genre-bending Daybreak ends its first season on a shocker. The producers talk about the big twist that sets up season 2.
Through 10 episodes, Netflix’s Daybreak has a little something for everyone: Mad Max-style tribes, Ghoulies, mutated animals, catchy cereal jingles, a samurai episode narrated by RZA, and a Japanese cover of the Backstreet Boys inescapable “I Want It That Way.” At the center of this explosion of genre sensibilities is the quest for survival in the apocalypse–a metaphor for high school experience–and what we’re led to believe is a love story for the ages between Josh (Colin Ford) and Sam (Sophie Simnett).
Only Josh and his “killer origin story” of revenge, drama, fights, and love is not exactly what our mostly reliable narrator made it out to be. In episode eight, flashbacks reveal that it wasn’t the apocalypse that tore Josh and Sam apart.

Decades of high school stories have been built on the idea that rules are made to be broken. So it’s no surprise that “Daybreak,” the new Netflix series following the teen survivors of a nuclear blast, sets out to subvert not only some of the well-trodden standards of the subgenre but the expectations it sets up for itself.
Based on Brian Ralph’s comics series, this adaptation from co-creators Aron Eli Coleite and Brad Peyton imagines an apocalyptic aftermath where Glendale High School students have carved up East Los Angeles into territorial pockets. The cheerleaders, the 4-h club, and the athletes are just a handful of tribes who’ve staked out their own domain in an irradiated landscape. Adults in this “Daybreak” world are either dead or have become ghoulies, zombie-brained walkers doomed to repeat their last innocuous pre-explosion thoughts for the rest of time.

There will always be a show that feels different, sometimes in ways that you can't explain.
Daybreak is exactly that, except it goes out of it's way to stand out because of it's insistence to not be boxed down to one type of show.
It is everything from a samurai saga to a coming of age story to a romantic love story to Mad Max fueled action sequences.
The reason that Daybreak gets it right is that it doesn't take itself too seriously and yet at the same time goes out of it's way to focus on an emotionally driven story about finding your tribe.
There is so much going for the show, even in just the introductory episodes, because of the attention that is given to details that shape the overall story into a meaningful example of pure understanding.
Across the board, there is so much through being put into creating Daybreak,...

“Daybreak” fits neatly into one of the genres that seems increasingly major for Netflix: The drama that places in counterpoint the big emotions felt by teens and the literal end of the world.
To wit: “The End of the F***ing World,” a well-regarded British co-production, is returning for a second season in November; Netflix’s Sabrina the teenage witch, on “Chilling Adventures of Sabrina,” has to deal with potentially apocalyptic stakes instead of the light scrapes her ABC predecessor faced; on “The Society,” all adults have vanished in some sort of event, forcing those under 18 to start the world anew.
It’s this last show that “Daybreak” shares the most with, on a premise level: In the first episode, we’re told that a nuclear attack on Los Angeles had a disproportionate winnowing effect: “The bombs must have been biological. Most adults melted into goo,” narrator Josh (Colin Ford) intones.

This spoiler-free Daybreak review is based on viewing of the first five episodes.
Every show should be judged based on its success in entertaining the audience for which it was intended, and Daybreak, as a post-apocalyptic teen dramedy, will doubtlessly please those who enjoy a bit of fourth wall breaking narration and exaggerated iterations of high school cliques in survival mode. The logic behind the premise that a biological weapon killed most adults and turned others into zombie-like “ghoulies” will quickly be seen as unimportant simply because the characters themselves are compelling, particularly the show’s protagonists Josh (Colin Ford), Wesley Fists (Austin Crute), and Angelica (Alyvia Alyn Lind).

I’ve got a great new trailer to share with you for a super fun new post-apocalyptic coming-of-age comedy adventure series called Daybreak. The series is based on the graphic novel by Brian Ralph and tells a story where teens are the only survivors in a Ghoulie infested post-apocalyptic world. It may look a little strange and weird, but it also looks like a blast!
Daybreak is described as “a genre-bending series and subversive dark comedy” and the story “finds 17-year-old high school outcast Josh searching for his missing girlfriend Sam in post-apocalyptic Glendale, California. Joined by a ragtag group of misfits including a pyromaniac 12 year old Angelica and Josh’s former high school bully Wesley, now turned pacifist samurai, Josh tries to stay alive amongst the horde of Mad Max-style gangs, zombie-like creatures called Ghoulies, and everything else this brave new world throws at him.”

You thought your four years of high school were hard? Try getting through it after a nuclear blast basically wipes out the planet on the night of Homecoming. Netflix's latest coming of age story Daybreak follows an eclectic group of survivors in a treacherous post-apocalyptic world full of hormones and vicious tribes kicking ass as they figure out this whacky thing called life.
It's as if Ferris Bueller's Day Off and Mad Max had a baby, which is appropriate considering Matthew Broderick stars as Glendale High School's Principal Michael Burr, alongside Colin Ford as our sassy young protagonist Josh Wheeler; Sophie Simnett as Sam Dean; Austin Crute as Wesley Fists; Alyvia Alyn Lind as Angelica Green; Cody Kearsley as Turbo Bro Jock; Jeanté Godlock as Mona Lisa; and Gregory Kasyan as Eli Cardashyan. Watch the trailer above, and get ready for the Battle Royale when Daybreak drops on Oct.

Netflix has released the first teaser trailer for an insanely wild looking post-apocalyptic comedy adventure series called Daybreak. The series is based on a graphic novel by Brian Ralph and it looks super weird yet incredibly fun.
It’s funny because I grew up in Glendale, CA and this setting looks nothing like it. But, it’s all in good fun and obviously a very fictionalized version of Glendale.

Matthew Broderick goes from Hollywood’s favorite high school truant to a positive principal in Netflix’s upcoming dramedy “Daybreak.”
And the “Ferris Bueller’s Day Off” references don’t end there, as the official trailer released Monday morning showed.
Star Colin Ford, who plays 17-year-old hero, Josh Wheeler, closes out the action-filled teaser with this drop-the-mic line honoring the 1986 John Hughes classic: “And you thought we weren’t going to have any fun with the apocalypse, shame on you.”

The 1-minute, 1o-second clip opens with a normal school day as Broderick’s Principal Michael Burr makes morning announcements and positive affirmations to the students of Glendale High School.
Then things start to get wild, as we realize that this is actually post-apocalyptic California that is more like “Mad Max” than “Saved by the Bell.
