The Dragon Ball franchise has been around for four decades, and Goku has been the main protagonist throughout its entire run. Goku's power level was quite low when the franchise launched, but he is now one of the strongest fighters in the universe. Goku has defeated many characters over the years, and several of his fights ended with no clear winner. That being said, Goku should have actually lost to certain characters.

Kid Goku should have lost to several characters in the original Dragon Ball series, but a number of factors spared his life. As an adult, Goku should have lost to multiple characters, but other characters either helped him win or saved his life. “If I’m evil, then you must be the hero of justice…”

The above line is ostensibly the first thing Goku says to Top before they face each other in combat, but it contains a much deeper significance than simple trash talking. “Goku Must Pay!” carries over the previous installment’s idea that Goku is actually the Tournament of Power’s biggest antagonist. If that’s true, then Top becomes the de facto “good guy,” which is a strong energy to build this episode on.
