One of the most lauded events of the Tribeca Festival, Chanel returned to host the 17th annual Tribeca Artists Dinner on Monday, June 10 at The Odeon in Manhattan, moving locations from Balthazar last year. The intimate evening honors the artists who have contributed original artwork to the festival’s award-winning filmmakers.
The carpet always feels like some sort of family reunion at this event, where much of Hollywood assembles in what feels like a — though glamorous — laid-back dinner to celebrate how far the film scene of NYC has come as it regenerated itself after 9/11. IndieWire favorites Robert De Niro, Jane Rosenthal, Katie Holmes, Blake Lively, Jude Law, Trevor Noah, Mark Ronson, Camila Mendes, Selma Blair, Colman Domingo, Chloe Fineman, Olivia Munn, Dianna Agron, Hannah Einbinder, Hari Nef, Lizzy Caplan, Lily Rabe, Natasha Lyonne, Victoria Pedretti, David Harbour, David O. Russell, and Francesca Scorsese were just a handful of the many attendees.

As the clock inched toward midnight at the Vanity Fair Oscars party (and on the eight-month long “Barbie” press tour), Greta Gerwig gleefully danced the night away.
With an In-n-Out burger in one hand and a cocktail in the other, Gerwig grooved to Dua Lipa’s hit “Dance the Night” with another one of her Barbies, Hari Nef, who sported a pink feathered Balenciaga jacket with a sizable train.
For this last hurrah, Gerwig swapped the pink boiler suit she famously wore while directing the $1.4 billion blockbuster (and the stunning Gucci gown she wore at the ceremony) for a black open tuxedo jacket, skipping a shirt in favor of draping Boucheron diamonds on her neck and chest.
Shortly after the “Barbie” song ended, the director was ready to take a load off, making her way to an open seat on the outdoor courtyard, because it had been a long day...

Fashion designer Tory Burch has partnered with fellow fashion designer-turned-restaurateur Humberto Leon on a new Los Angeles pop-up shop, open this week at 8483 Melrose Avenue at the corner of La Cienega Boulevard. The Tory Burch x Humberto Leon concept shop will serve as a temporary outpost for Burch through the end of the year, while her flagship Tory Burch store on Rodeo Drive is undergoing renovations.
L.A.-based Leon — the co-founder of Opening Ceremony and former co-creative director at Kenzo — curated the pop-up’s assortment of Tory Burch apparel and accessories; designed the store interior (including Chiclet-like pink seating and strawberry-shaped vases commissioned from Mexican designer-architect Aranza Garcia) and teamed with Burch to design special-edition concert-style T-shirts, sweatshirts and tote bags. The merch riffs on German photographer Walter Schels’ blown-up photos of cats and bunnies, also featured prominently on the interior decor, and on T-shirts, cargo trousers and a...

As we wrap up our year-end coverage, IndieWire looks back at the people, projects, and ideas that defined 2023 — and what’s coming next.
To fully appreciate the financial success of Greta Gerwig’s zeitgeist-shifting smash hit “Barbie,” let’s briefly consider some of the other heavy-hitters it trounced at the box office: John Wick, Indiana Jones, Transformers, the “Fast and Furious” family, and The Flash. The number-one film of the year may have sprung from beloved (slight shudder here) intellectual property, but Gerwig so wholly transformed the iconic doll, shaping a new mythos around her in the process, that nothing about “Barbie” felt been-there or done-that in the slightest.
While Hollywood’s affection for — and attention to — the kind of franchise features that used to regularly top the box office charts is on the decline, the success of “Barbie,” the sort of fresh take on seemingly old material that should...

The Dream (House) is dead. That’s the revelation that Margot Robbie’s Stereotypical Barbie must face midway through Barbie, when she and her friends from the real world return to Barbie Land and visit her home. In place of the Dream House, a pink paradise that served as the stage for all-night dance parties and splendid breakfasts in the morning, stands what Ken has termed “the Mojo Dojo Casa House.”
“You don’t have to say ‘dojo’ and ‘house’,” Sasha (Ariana Greenblatt) responds.
“And ‘casa’,” continues Gloria (America Ferrera).
But Ken (Ryan Gosling) isn’t having it. “But you do, because it feels good,” he insists. “Try it.”
It’s not just excessive terminology that makes Ken think that he feels good. It’s the excessive stuff, the excessive symbols that he uses that tell him that he’s a man – even if...

Following the box office success of Barbie, there’s been a lot of chatter about a potential sequel that would see Margot Robbie reprise the titular character role.
However, in a new interview, Robbie seems to shoot down any possibilities of a follow-up to the Greta Gerwig-directed film.
“I think we put everything into this one. We didn’t build it to be a trilogy or something,” Robbie told the Associated Press in an interview. “Greta put everything into this movie, so I can’t imagine what would be next.”
Barbie made over $1.4 billion at the box office and Robbie also reflected on the success of the film noting that “original films can still hit huge.”
“It doesn’t have to be a sequel or a prequel or a remake,” Robbie continued. “It can be totally original. It can still be big given the big budget to do that.

In a world that has gifted Greta Gerwig the possibility to focus all her creative skills and talents on Barbie, the film becomes the pink dream we all hoped it would be. After months and months of their marketing campaign, which often felt like seeing a sea of pink slowly wash towards us, the creators behind Barbie were right to put everything they had into getting people into the theatres to see this on the big screen. Not only does Barbie reach something on a creative and entertaining level, but it touches deeper and lingers on the mind longer than any movie about a doll has the right to.

In addition to Robbie and Gosling, the film also stars Issa Rae, Simu Liu, Ncuti Gatwa, Kate McKinnon, Kingsley Ben-Adir,...

"Barbie" isn't really queer cinema ... but it's also not not queer cinema. Indeed, director Greta Gerwig and her collaborators fill their billion-dollar blockbuster (Barbiebuster?) with cheeky innuendos, like having Ryan Gosling and Simu Liu's Kens threaten to "beach" each other off, or Gosling's Ken being checked out by a man when he and Stereotypical Barbie (Margot Robbie) are skating around Venice Beach. In fact, the Kens are more than just a little camp in general, from their incredibly colorful attire to the way they romp around Barbieland pantomiming that they're riding horses "Monty Python"-style.
That being said, there's no explicitly sexual material in "Barbie," assuming the moment where two Kens give Gosling's Ken a peck on his (facial) cheeks during the "I'm Just Ken" musical number doesn't count. Nevertheless, the film has been unexpectedly banned in the countries Kuwait and Oman -- places that, according to the Los Angeles Times,...

HBO has canceled "The Idol" - created by Abel "The Weeknd" Tesfaye, Sam Levinson, and Reza Fahim - after one season. On Aug. 28, a spokesperson for HBO confirmed the news to Popsugar, saying, "'The Idol' was one of HBO's most provocative original programs, and we're pleased by the strong audience response. After much thought and consideration, HBO, as well as the creators and producers have decided not to move forward with a second season. We're grateful to the creators, cast, and crew for their incredible work."
Reps for Tesfaye did not immediately respond to Popsugar's request for comment.
Speaking to Popsugar back in May, Da'Vine Joy Randolph - who plays Jocelyn's (Lily-Rose Depp) manager, Destiny - said everyone was hopeful the show would get picked up for a second season. "We really love doing this project and would love to do it again," she said. Jane Adams, who...

The Idol is one and done at HBO.
The controversial series from Euphoria creator Sam Levinson and Abel Tesfaye, better known as The Weeknd, will not be returning for a second season.
It’s not a huge surprise given the critical and commercial reception of the show, which starred Tesfaye and Lily-Rose Depp. It also came after extensive reshoots following the departure of director Amy Seimetz, as revealed by Deadline in April 2022, and a reduced order taking its total number of episodes to five.
Some of the cast did mention the possibility of a second season during interviews, though show insiders said that creators did not come into the production process with a plan for a multi-season arc.
Da’Vine Joy Randolph, who played one of the managers of Depp’s pop star Jocelyn, previously said that the first season was left intentionally open-ended for the possibility of a second.

Nine years ago, Stewart Thorndike burst onto the scene with her début feature Lyle, the story of a young woman recovering from a tragedy who becomes convinced that somebody is trying to harm the child she’s carrying. It was intended as part of a trilogy, and it has taken a long time for her to be able to bring the second part, Bad Things, to the screen, but it’s here at last. It follows four friends who travel to a remote hotel which one of their number, Ruthie (Gayle Rankin) has inherited, and where, unfortunately for them, what was intended to be a fun couple of days before the place is sold turns into a fight for survival.
When we meet, Stewart is delighted to learn that I live in Paisley,...
