[Warning: The below contains Major spoilers for Surface Season 2 Episode 2 “Speak of the Devil.”] Sophie (Gugu Mbatha-Raw) and James (Oliver Jackson-Cohen) would certainly use this episode’s title to describe one another on Surface. And in the final moments of this installment, she is shocked to find that he’s followed her to London! Leading up to that point, Sophie is continuing to investigate what happened to her mother. She suspects that the Huntley patriarch killed her. To do so, she’s working with journalist Callum (Gavin Drea), who she recently learned her mother contacted in the past before she lost her memories. Still using the name Tess Caldwell (from a passport she found), she also reconnects with Eliza Huntley (Millie Brady) and admits that she came back to London because her life fell apart and she felt like she was playing a role that never quite fit. She last felt like herself with Eliza. She scores...

The first season of Surface was met with mixed reviews as the Apple TV+ thriller tried to use a unique amnesia storyline to evoke a psychological twist reminiscent of films like The Girl on the Train and Gone Girl. Led by a stellar performance from Gugu Mbatha-Raw alongside Oliver Jackson-Cohen, the 2022 first season of Surface ended with a cliffhanger teasing a major shift for the second chapter in the story. Now, Surface is back with a vastly improved sophomore run that introduces an all-new cast of supporting players as the action moves from San Francisco to London.
Surface follows Sophie Ellis (Gugu Mbatha-Raw), a woman suffering from amnesia after a suicide attempt. Trying to piece together her past and face suspicions about her husband, James (Oliver Jackson-Cohen), Sophie finds herself uncovering a complex web of lies that include details about her past. This season finds Sophie in London, living under her real name Tess Caldwell.

Surface is back, doubling down on all the gaslighting, unreliable narration, repressed trauma, and secret identities we’ve come to know and love. It remains more of a guilty pleasure than a taut psychological thriller. However, the series is elevated by its star, Gugu Mbatha-Raw, who is sensational here for the second consecutive season.
Produced by Reese Witherspoon, Surface thrives on Mbatha-Raw’s mesmerizing performance, allowing the audience to overlook the show’s weaknesses and give in to the irresistible distraction this Apple TV+ series is designed to be. A streaming soap opera that is addictive due to its bingeable format, glossy production, and high-stakes twists and turns.
It may not be high-brow, but this Veronica West creation gets the job done.

In the trailer for the second season of Apple TV+’s psychological thriller Surface, Gugu Mbatha-Raw’s Sophie is still looking to uncover the truth about her past, this time in London.
After season one ended with Sophie embracing her former identity as Tess Caldwell and going back to the U.K. in search of Millie Brady’s Eliza, whose bloody face has been haunting Sophie, the season two trailer finds Sophie still across the pond and having reconnected with Eliza’s posh British family, the Huntleys.
Eliza is shown recalling how Sophie, whom she knows as Tess, used to work at their family’s stables and the two were friends before Tess disappeared.
But Sophie’s not just seeking to reunite with old acquaintances. She’s overheard saying that her mother was murdered when she was very young and that she thinks the Huntleys were involved in her death.

Delving deeper into the mystery that led to Gugu Mbatha-Raw’s Tess Caldwell attempting suicide at the beginning of “Surface” Season 1, the psychological thriller returns Friday, February 21 for eight new episodes.

Surface, fans. We have some good news for you! The last time we saw a new episode of the psychological thriller starring Gugu Mbatha-Raw was in September 2022 on Apple TV+. Only a few months later in December that year, the streamer announced that it had renewed the show for a season 2. However since then, we've been waiting to see what comes next in the complicated life of Sophie/Tess. Well, we finally have an update.
Surface season 2 premieres sometime in Winter 2025 on Apple TV+, per a press release. I know this is still a bit vague and not an exact release date. But you know what, I'm going to take what I can get at this point because since the streaming service announced the renewal news, we haven't gotten much updates.

In scientific terms, double blind refers to an experiment in which neither the subjects nor those in charge of the experiment know who is getting the drug and who is getting a placebo. The new Irish thriller Double Blind, not to be confused with another medical thriller of the same name, revolves around one such experiment, a first stage trial of a drug that might eliminate the need for sleep. And if that sounds familiar, it might be due to another recent Irish film, The Sleep Experiment, based off of the creepypasta The Russian Sleep Experiment. But while there are echoes of that here, the two tell their stories in very different ways.
Double Blind follows Claire, a broke young woman who volunteers for a clinical trial run by Blackwood Pharmaceuticals.

The Last Kingdom introduces real historical figures through engaging fictional characters, sparking interest in English history. Despite some inaccuracies, the show sheds light on key figures like Alfred the Great and Aethelstan, showcasing their impact. By examining characters based on real figures like Aethelflaed and Edward the Elder, viewers gain insight into Anglo-Saxon history.
The Last Kingdom is full of engaging and memorable characters, many of whom are based on real historical figures. The Last Kingdom is based on Bernard Cornwell's Saxon Stories novel series, which follows the unification of England as a single kingdom through the eyes of its fictional protagonist, Uhtred of Bebbanburg (Alexander Dreymon). By the end of Seven Kings Must Die, the show's sequel film, a vast number of historical figures are introduced as characters.
While The Last Kingdom's talented cast portrays a number of interesting historical figures, they are not always depicted accurately.

With mistrust in science and healthcare being so out of hand these days, the timing of Double Blind couldn’t be better. Real-world misgivings about Big Pharma, experimental medicines, and scientific ethics fuel this Irish horror movie where human lab-rats must follow one important rule: don’t fall asleep. Otherwise they will die. The concept is improbable, but director Ian Hunt-Duffy and writer Darach McGarrigle go that extra mile when getting under people’s skin. The end product is both clever and stylish, not to mention unrelentingly suspenseful.
The movie’s titular setting — a hush-hush clinical trial where neither the participant nor the experimenter know who is receiving a certain treatment — is ideal for creating unease and terror. Double Blind is a thrilling single-location film with a diverse cast and a tight script about an experimental drug trial gone wrong. Pollyanna McIntosh was intrigued by the movie's single-location storytelling and the compassionate nature of her character, Dr. Burke. McIntosh is also excited about her Walking Dead return in The Ones Who Live, and is hopeful for a future beyond the upcoming spinoff.
Pollyanna McIntosh returns to the world of single-location storytelling with Double Blind. After an experimental drug trial goes awry, the test subjects face a terrifying side effect: if you fall asleep you die. Trapped in an isolated facility, panic ensues as they try to escape and somehow stay awake. Fighting off sleep, and each other, to stay alive. Starring Millie Brady, Pollyanna McIntosh, Kate Ashfield, Diarmuid Noyes, Akshay Kumar, and Brenock O'Connor. Set for release in February if anyone is interested in finding out who makes it out alive... This looks intense, not sure why they're attacking each other.

The Last Kingdom is based on real historical figures but also features captivating original characters like Eadith and Leofric. The original characters often outshine the historical ones due to their flexibility and freedom from historical facts. Characters like Aldhelm, Gisela, and Hild provide intriguing arcs and contribute to the show's success alongside the main protagonist, Uhtred.
The Last Kingdom bases many of its characters on real historical figures, but the show also has a wealth of fascinating original characters. Based on Bernard Cornwell's Saxon Stories novel series, The Last Kingdom follows Alexander Dreymon's Uhtred of Bebbanburg across medieval England. From season 1 to the end of The Last Kingdom's movie, dozens of layered and engaging figures join Uhtred as he seeks to recover his stolen birthright, the fortress of Bebbanburg.

Aethelflaed, the beloved Mercian Queen in The Last Kingdom, dies of advanced breast cancer, as revealed by Eadith's examination. The depiction of Aethelflaed's death in the show is an artistic liberty, with her dying in Uhtred's arms, while historically she died from an unspecified illness. In the movie Seven Kings Must Die, multiple characters die, including King Edward, Aldhelm, Ingrith, Domnal, Rognvaldr, and the fate of Uhtred is left ambiguous.
The Last Kingdom season 5 saw the death of the beloved Mercian Queen, Aethelflaed, from a mysterious illness — so what did Aethelflaed die of? Following the history of England, The Last Kingdom shows the war between the Danes and the Anglo-Saxons. Caught in the middle is Uhtred (Alexander Dreymon). Uhtred’s shared loyalties lead to his becoming a great warrior and advisor for the Anglo-Saxons, with the first seasons of the series covering his time serving King Alfred. When King Alfred...
