Producer, financier, market researcher and distributor Peter Drinkwater is taking an innovative, intensively market research-based approach to creating, producing and marketing Australian and Us films.

Drinkwater’s Cowlick Entertainment Group has set up an investment fund which backed Corey Pearson’s supernatural drama Harmony: The Five Frequencies Saga – Part 1, which opened in Australian cinemas last weekend.

That will be followed by I Am Woman, the Helen Reddy biopic directed by Unjoo Moon, which Goalpost Pictures plans to shoot in Australia, Los Angeles and NY later this year.

Also on Cowlick’s slate is The Stand-In, a romantic comedy which will star Drew Barrymore in the dual roles of a washed-up movie star who is busted for a tax evasion and hires her unemployed, adoring stand-in to do community service in her place.

In 1997, Canberra law student Anu Singh murdered her boyfriend Joe Cinque by lacing his coffee with Rohypnol and injecting him with heroin after a dinner party.

Some of the guests, mostly other students, had heard rumours of Singh.s plan. None of them warned Cinque..

The circumstances surrounding the crime and its subsequent trial are the subject of Helen Garner.s 2004 book, Joe Cinque.s Consolation.—.now adapted for screen by director Sotiris Dounoukos and his co-writer Matt Rubenstein.

The film, Dounoukos.s first, stars Maggie Naouri as Singh and Jerome Meyer as Cinque.

A Canberra native, Dounoukos has a personal connection to the story; he studied law at the Australian National University at the same time as Singh and she was a friend of a friend.

Filming has begun.around.Sydney and the Illawarra region on.Harmony, a new feature directed by Corey Pearson and starring Jacqueline McKenzie, Eamon Farren, Jessica Falkholt, Jerome Meyer, Paula Arundell and featuring Tessa James.

Harmony is the story of a girl who extracts fear from anyone she encounters, a gift she was born with but is unable to control. According to Pearson, the film "explores the co-dependence of love and fear. We all experience fear in our lives, and often we let that fear consume us and govern our actions, which can prevent us from chasing our dreams."

The pool of talented young Australian actors is so vast the judges of the Heath Ledger Scholarship presented by Australians in Film have named 20 finalists this year, up from the usual 15.

That.s a real stamp of approval considering the calibre of the judges: Collin Farrell, Miranda Otto, directors Gregor Jordan and Robert Luketic, casting director Ann Fay (Anzac Girls, Packed to the Rafters) and Randi Hiller, VP of feature casting at Walt Disney Studios.

The winner of the sixth annual scholarship, which fosters the education and career development of young Australian actors in the Us, will be announced in Los Angeles on June 12.
