Alena Baklanova

Alena Baklanova is a Moscow and Barcelona-based documentary filmmaker, scriptwriter, and author. Her work explores themes of memory, identity, and the resilience of women. In 2022, her film The Old Believers - a portrait of a family's return to their ancestral Russian homeland - was officially selected for the American Documentary and Animation Film Festival (AmDocs) in Palm Springs. Alena previously won Best Documentary (Foreign) at the Los Angeles Independent Film Festival Awards in 2015 for her debut Girls, a powerful confessional by a Russian lesbian navigating trauma and survival.
