After Liam Payne fell to his death from a hotel balcony in Buenos Aires, Argentina on Wednesday (October 16th), TMZ tastelessly published a cropped photo of the One Direction singer’s body. The celebrity tabloid immediately drew backlash for the decision, and responded by quietly taking down the photo.

The site initially published a purported image of Payne’s arm and waist, which they identified with his tattoos. “TMZ obtained a photo showing Liam’s body on a wooden deck at the hotel with tables and chairs nearby,” the accompanying copy read. “We’re not showing the whole body, but you can clearly see his tattoos — a clock on his left forearm, and a scorpion on his abdomen.”

TMZ is coming under fire over its coverage of Liam Payne‘s death, which included alleged photos of his deceased body.

After the outlet reported on the One Direction alum’s passing Wednesday, friends and fans of Payne called out the site over the since-removed photos that purported to confirm his death via detailed close-ups of his tattoos.

Alessia Cara, who previously performed with Payne and Zedd, called out TMZ on X. “You’re gross @TMZ,” she wrote, seemingly in reference to the photos.

Although TMZ has not addressed the backlash, the photos have since been removed from the article. “TMZ has seen a photo showing Liam’s body on the deck at the hotel with tables and chairs nearby,” the language now reads. “You can clearly see his tattoos — a clock on his left forearm, and a scorpion on his abdomen — which helped us confirm early reports from witnesses.

TMZ has drawn outrage for publishing cropped photos of Liam Payne’s body taken after the One Direction singer fell to his death from the roof of a hotel in Buenos Aires, Argentina.

The photos showed portions of Payne’s arm and waist, which were covered in identifying tattoos. “TMZ obtained a photo showing Liam’s body on a wooden deck at the hotel with tables and chairs nearby,” the story read. “We’re not showing the whole body, but you can clearly see his tattoo — a clock on his left forearm, and a scorpion on his abdomen.”

The outlet also ran a photo of the police tent erected later over Payne’s body to shield it from photographers and prying eyes.

Faye Fantarrow, a rising British singer and songwriter whose debut EP was produced by Eurythmics star Dave Stewart, has died. She was 21.

Fantarrow died at home Saturday after being diagnosed with a rare glioma brain tumor in September 2022, her mother, Pam Fantarrow, announced. She had twice beaten leukemia since learning she had cancer at ages 8 and 13.

In most of those cases their wins were fairly predictable, feeling like the culmination of a massive year rather than the start of a new era for the artists. This is true for many — dare I say, most — Best New Artist winners of the past decade or so. Chance the Rapper, Sam Smith, and Macklemore and Ryan Lewis all coasted easily to their wins, and even the less obvious picks like Bon Iver and Alessia Cara were still predicted by many Grammy watchers. Perhaps the last truly shocking Best New Artist was Esperanza Spalding, who took the award in 2011. And now, 12 years later, we might be in for a similar event.

Three of Canada’s most talented tunesmiths will be joining the Canadian Songwriters Hall of Fame in a special event on Saturday, Sept. 24.

As Canadian Press reports, Alanis Morissette, Bryan Adams and David Foster will be officially inducted into the organization during a special ceremony taking place at Toronto’s Massey Hall.

Also being inducted into the Hall of Fame will be Jim Vallance — Adams’ frequent collaborator, who’s also written songs for the likes of Anne Murray and Joan Jett — and Daniel Lavoie, who’s written hits for Celine Dion and Roch Voisine.

Olivia Rodrigo will honor Alanis Morissette by inducting her into the Canadian Songwriters Hall of Fame. "I remember hearing Alanis for the first time when I was about 13. I was in the car with my parents when 'Jagged Little Pill' came on," Rodrigo said in a statement provided to the organization, per its Instagram. "I heard 'Perfect,' I was like, 'Oh, my God . . . You can write songs like that?' I just looked at music and songwriting in a completely different way." Rodrigo will present the award on Sept. 24 at the Canadian Songwriters Hall of Fame Gala at Massey Hall in Toronto. Alessia Cara, Corey Hart, and Nickelback will also perform at the ceremony.

The annual Moon Person trophy show is set for August 28 at the Prudential Center in Newark, NJ.

Anitta will make her VMA debut with a performance of her single “Envolver,” which topped the Billboard Global Excl U.S. chart in April.
