Tom Hanks is known as Hollywood’s Dad due to his penchant for choosing good-guy roles in films. From Saving Private Ryan to Sully, the actor has rarely played characters that are grey or completely villainous. So, it was only natural that he got to play the ‘grumpiest man in the world’ in the American remake of the Swedish film A Man Called Ove.
Remade as A Man Called Otto, the film was an adaptation of Fredrik Backman’s novel and starred Hanks as the eponymous Otto. The film saw a lonely widower having to deal with a new family that moves into his neighborhood and how he connects with them. Hanks revealed why he felt that the story needed to be said for an American audience.

Tom Hanks is, once again, proving his worth as one of the world's most beloved movie stars. While some of the actor's more recent work has been relegated to the streaming world (such as "Finch" and "Pinocchio"), Hanks made his return to the silver screen at the tail end of last year with "A Man Called Otto," a relatively rare adult-skewing movie that was, for all intents and purposes, an original film, even though it is adapted from the book by Fredrik Backman. Now, more than eight weeks into its run, the film has crossed a pretty impressive milestone.
As per The Numbers, director Marc Forster's latest has officially crossed the $100 million mark at the global box office. That includes $61.1 million domestic and $39.2 internationally for a grand total of $100.4 million. That is, without a doubt, rare air for this kind of movie in the pandemic era. “A Man Called Otto,” a heartfelt drama starring Tom Hanks as a cranky widower, has notched an important box office milestone, crossing $100 million globally.
The film’s tally stands at $100.4 million, including $61.2 million in North America and $39.2 million internationally. Overseas, the top-selling markets are the United Kingdom ($6.28 million), Australia ($5.17 million), Mexico ($5.06 million), Spain ($2.6 million) and Germany ($2.5 million).
In pandemic times, the $100 million benchmark is notable because only a few movies aimed at older audiences, such as Baz Luhrmann’s kaleidoscopic biopic “Elvis,” Tom Cruise’s sequel “Top Gun: Maverick,” and Brad Pitt’s action-comedy “Bullet Train,” have managed to bring audiences to theaters.
Sony initially planned to premiere the $50 million-budgeted “A Man Called Otto” around Christmas, but the studio decided to open the film in limited release theaters on Dec. 30 before expanding it nationwide on Jan. 13. By waiting until the new year, which is usually a slower time at the box office,...

A Man Called Otto is a ‘large hearted’ romantic-comedy-drama story directed by Marc Forster from a screenplay by David Magee. It is the 2nd film adaptation of the 2012 novel ‘A Man Called Ove’ by Fredrik Backman after the 2015 Swedish film of the same name. The film stars Tom Hanks as Anderson Otto, with Mariana Treviño, Rachel Keller, and Manuel Garcia-Rulfo in key characters.

Otto Anderson (Tom Hanks), is an old eccentric widower. Why eccentric? After retiring from a steel company, he plans suicide for having lost his wife Sonya, a schoolteacher, six months back. Otto had met Sonya on a train after returning a dropped book to her.
In the opening scene that sets the tone of Otto Anderson (Tom Hanks)’s character, he is shown intending to buy a specific measurement of rope at a hardware store, only to learn that the store’s pricing policies won’t...

Marc Forster's "A Man Called Otto" is a dark comedy and a star vehicle for the undeniable Tom Hanks. In the movie, Hanks plays Otto, a grumpy curmudgeon who is starting to lose faith in his community in the aftermath of his widow's death. When a young family moves in next door, Otto's rough walls come down and he begins to open up his heart to his new neighbors and realize that there's still always more in store to live for. A mid-budget, tear-jerking dramedy sounds exactly like something that's been missing from Hollywood lately, but that's because "A Man Called Otto" is actually an import — as it's a remake of a Swedish film, "A Man Called Ove" and a novel of the same name.

In A Man Called Otto, Tom Hanks stars as a grunty older man named Otto, who’s sort of a dick. He’s a little bit of a busybody. He lives on a quiet street in suburban Pittsburgh where everybody seems to know each other and where you need a parking permit in your window to park your car, otherwise somebody (Otto) will notice. The older residents, Otto among them, have a bit of history. This does not prevent Otto from believing that everybody in his midst is something of an idiot.

“A Man Called Otto” star Tom Hanks did not take the responsibility of portraying his character’s suicide attempts lightly.
“A Man Called Otto,” adapted from the best-selling novel “A Man Called Ove” by Frederik Backman and also based on the Swedish feature film, follows Otto (Hanks), a grumpy old man who clings to rules and order to prevent unnecessary chaos. Deep down, he misses his late wife Sonja (Rachel Keller), who challenged his black-and-white thinking with her colorful, sweet personality.
Otto wants nothing more than to join Sonya in the afterlife, a desire that drives him to multiple suicide attempts in different ways.
“Because it was firmly rooted in both the novel in the original movie, it is part of what the story has to be. The responsibility that comes along with that, we did not take that lightly at all,” Hanks said in an interview with TheWrap. “Because on one hand,...

A version of this story about Mariana Treviño and “A Man Called Otto” first appeared in the Awards Preview issue of TheWrap’s awards magazine.
When Mexican actress Mariana Treviño first auditioned for the role of Marisol in Marc Forster’s “A Man Called Otto,” she was by herself in a hotel room in Spain, isolated and depressed because of the pandemic. She had nobody to help her put two scenes on tape, so she shot the scenes in her hotel room playing all the characters herself.
And Forster saw something in that one-woman show that made sense for the role of a young, pregnant, frazzled but indomitable mother of two who finds a way to carry on and doesn’t have time for the dramas of Tom Hanks’ Otto, whose perpetual crankiness turns out to be a way of compensating for suicidal depression after the death of his wife.

Editor’s note: Deadline’s Read the Screenplay series debuts and celebrates the scripts of films that will factor in this year’s movie awards races.
David Magee had two pieces of source material to work from for A Man Called Otto, the Marc Forster-directed Columbia Pictures remake of the hit Swedish film A Man Called Ove. That original pic, which scored two Oscar nominations in 2017, was written and directed by Hannes Holm and based on Fredrik Backman’s 2014 New York Times bestselling novel.
In all instances, the plot centers on a curmudgeonly man — in the latest case played by Tom Hanks as Otto, not Ove, and in this case in Pittsburgh, not a small Swedish town. Otto is in deep mourning after the loss of his wife to cancer; he has given up on being happy and kind to others and would mostly prefer greatly to join his beloved in the great beyond.

Tom Hanks has worked his high-wattage, regular-guy-hero amiability for so long that he was bound to experiment with a year like 2022 eventually. In the summer, he gave us an oily, flesh-packed Colonel Tom Parker with that strange barbed-wire accent in “Elvis,” then he took on Geppetto in the year’s other, forgettable “Pinocchio,” and now he’s been fitted for grumpypants, frown lines, and a self-made noose as a suicidal sourpuss in “A Man Called Otto.”
But we know Hanks by now, and what kind of curmudgeon he’d want to play, which means you don’t have to be familiar with the source material of “Otto” to guess within the first few minutes — when he’s being obnoxious to a perfectly kind hardware store cashier, but in that isn’t-it-cute-how-mean-he-is way — that this is one of those movies typically described in terms of “surrendering” to “charms,” and “winning you over.

In Marc Forster’s A Man Called Otto, Tom Hanks plays a grump. He patrols his neighborhood with a scowl on his face, hoping to poke fun and ultimately subvert our usual expectations of one of America’s favorite actors. Hanks dons this face happy to be the villain for a change, even if every audience member knows he will turn out to be the hero. For Forster and his leading man, the drama is a step down from previous work, an emotionally telegraphed, near-manipulative adaptation of a better book already adapted in Sweden to far greater results.
Otto is a friendless widower, brought back into the community by his new neighbors, a family led by Marisol, elevated by a superb Mariana Treviño. Released by Universal in 424 cinemas, Till tells the true story of Mamie Till-Mobley, the mother of Emmett Till, a 14-year-old American boy who was murdered in a racially-motivated attack in 1955. In the film, Mamie vows to expose the racism behind the attack while working to have those involved brought to justice.

When you have an international best seller that was on the Nyt list for 42 weeks and then made into a multi-Oscar-nominated Swedish film that became the third-most successful in the history of that country Ingmar Bergman called home, you might wonder what the need was for an English-language American remake. The answer is a chance to give Tom Hanks a role he can run with and, more important, to bring a very human, often funny, character-driven story back to light in a time that needs it more than ever.

Warning: This review contains spoilers for "A Man Called Otto," as well as sensitive, potentially triggering content.
In Tom Hanks' wildly varied film career, he's played everything from a lawyer dying of AIDS ("Philadelphia") to a shopkeeper in love ("Sleepless In Seattle") to an unlikely influencer of history ("Forrest Gump"). He's even starred in a very informal plane crash trilogy, as a pilot stuck landing a crashing plane ("Sully"), a man stuck on an island after a plane crash ("Cast Away"), and a man stuck in an airport after a plane landing ("The Terminal"). In "A Man Called Otto," based on the 2012 Fredrik Backman novel "A Man Called Ove" and the 2015 Swedish film of that same title, Tom Hanks takes on his least characteristic role yet: that of a grumpy old widower.

Neither the comedy nor the inherently lovable Hanks are dark enough to bring this remake of an odd redemption story to life
Seven years ago, a frankly peculiar, quirky dramedy-heartwarmer from Sweden appeared: A Man Called Ove, based on the bestselling novel by Fredrik Backman. It was about a grumpy old widower who snaps at everyone on his street – officiously enforcing the Neighbourhood-Watch-type rules about parking and recycling – and keeps on trying to take his own life. These attempts are continually thwarted when he spots some local outside his house breaking some bylaw and Ove can’t resist rushing out to remonstrate. But a nerdy, sweet-natured young couple move in next door and insist on befriending Ove, and their artless friendship relieves Ove’s repressed sadness and affords him redemption. Ove was played in the original by Rolf Lassgård (Wallander on Swedish TV) and now by Tom Hanks – renamed Otto...

Despite recent reports to the contrary, Tom Hanks will always be known as the nicest guy in Hollywood. But is Tom Hanks such a “nice guy” that he can only play against type in the most obvious, literal way? A murderous villain is too far a stretch; a double-crossing commander is perhaps not juicy enough. No, when Tom Hanks wants to really throw a sour wrench onto his all-American good-guy bread and butter, he has to play a grumpy old man. Not just any grumpy old man: an embittered, persnickety, widower with a secret heart of gold. The question isn’t whether he pulls it off well enough, but if he should have tried in the first place.

‘A Man Called Otto’ Review: Tom Hanks in a Predictable but Touching Portrait of Grief and Resilience
Click here to read the full article.
The poster for A Man Called Otto invites us to “fall in love with the grumpiest man in America.” But really, was there any doubt, considering that he’s played by Tom Hanks? The inevitable transformation of the title character from ill-tempered sourpuss to lovable softy wouldn’t generate much suspense anyway, since the film is a remake of the hit 2015 Swedish film A Man Called Ove, adapted from the best-selling novel by Fredrik Backman. Add to that the fact that you have the modern-day inheritor of Jimmy Stewart’s mantle playing the lead, and you can pretty much predict the film’s every beat.
But that doesn’t it make any less enjoyable or moving, thanks to its reliably effective redemption arc, narrative structure and Hanks’ enduring appeal. Unlike the Swedish film’s lead actor, Rolf Lassgard, who was genuinely intimidating in his curmudgeonliness,...

Sf Studios, the 104-year old Nordic giant, has crashed into the awards season with Tom Hanks’ “A Man Called Otto,” which it produced with Playtone and fully financed.
Buzzed about as a potentially strong Oscar candidate since its first official screening in L.A. last week, the Sony Pictures film is a remake of “A Man Called Ove,” the Swedish hit also produced by Sf Studios. The 2015 film, adapted from Fredrik Backman’s global bestseller, earned two Oscar nominations.
Sf Studios’ CEO and president Michael Porseryd told Variety that the 50-million film with Hanks underscores the banner’s commitment to theatrical movies and its drive to own intellectual property rights for content it finances.
“The biggest difficulty we’re facing right now is to get audiences back into theaters, but when a movie works in cinemas, the payback is much bigger than when dealing with a streamer,” said Porseryd, who...

It’s been a productive and exciting time for Rita Wilson — the esteemed actress, producer and singer-songwriter who has returned this awards season with her third Oscar-qualifying original song.
The tune, “Til You’re Home,” was written for Sony’s upcoming drama A Man Called Otto, based on Fredrik Backman’s bestselling novel A Man Called Ove, which had previously been adapted into an Academy Award-nominated Swedish feature of the same name. Wilson wrote the piece with David Hodges and performed it with Sebastián Yatra, the Colombian artist best known for his work on Disney’s Encanto — also producing the pic as the first project under her newly announced film production banner, Artistic Films. (View the music video for “Til You’re Home” by clicking above.)

David Magee started his Hollywood career with a level of success that has eluded even some of the most successful screenwriters in the business. His debut film, 2004’s “Finding Neverland,” not only landed among the year’s Best Picture nominees but also netted Magee an Oscar nomination in the Best Adapted Screenplay category.
“The first time was surreal,” Magee tells Gold Derby in an exclusive video interview about his early success. “The first time, I just wrote one movie, and I got to go [to the Oscars]. That was a whirlwind that still if I think back on those days, I’m a little dizzy.”
But it wasn’t long before Magee was back at the Academy Awards, again as a nominee for 2012’s “Life of Pi.” That film received 11 nominations in total, including in the Best Picture category, and won four awards – the highest profile of which went to Ang Lee in the Best Director category.

Marc Forster knows something about movie stars. In his breakout feature, 2001’s “Monster’s Ball,” Forster directed Halle Berry to a historic Best Actress win (Berry is still the only Black woman to ever win an Academy Award in the category). Forster’s follow-up film, 2004’s “Finding Neverland,” was a Best Picture nominee with star Johnny Depp earning a Best Actor nomination. Later Forster films included blockbusters like “Quantum of Solace” (Daniel Craig’s second outing as James Bond) and “World War Z” (a global hit with Brad Pitt at the top of the call sheet). So when Forster praises “A Man Called Otto” star Tom Hanks as “the best actor I’ve ever worked with,” it pays to listen.
“He’s a whole different caliber of an actor,” Forster says of Hanks in an exclusive video interview with Gold Derby. “He’s someone who is that good and has been...

During the 1990s, when Tom Hanks became one of the biggest movie stars of all-time – a two-time Best Actor winner with a string of blockbuster hits – he was known as an actor as adept at comedy as he was at drama. But despite a track record of acclaimed performances over the last decade, Hanks hasn’t really had the opportunity to go for laughs on the big screen – something his wife, Rita Wilson, says they often discussed.
“I’m like, ‘You know, you haven’t done a comedy. Why haven’t you done a comedy since the golden days of Nora Ephron and romantic comedies?’” Wilson recalls asking Hanks during an exclusive interview with Gold Derby. Wilson says Hanks would reply by saying the industry had moved on from romantic comedies – and besides, he had aged out of the genre. He also wasn’t a fan of buddy comedies.

It’s not always bad to be late to the party, even when it comes to the Oscars. Sony Pictures’ “A Man Called Otto” had its first official screening on Monday at the Academy Museum, with a crowd full of industry voters and critics alike. Though the film wasn’t really on anyone’s radar, the reception was surprisingly enthusiastic based on social media reactions.
After sitting out the best picture discussion for the last three years, Sony has a few hands to play during the season. Aside from Gina Prince-Bythewood’s “The Woman King” and J.D. Dillard’s “Devotion,” Marc Forster’s “A Man Called Otto” could strongly appeal to the older demographic of the Academy, sure to bring joyous moments and a few tears.

Update: Sony is changing-up its platform of the Tom Hanks movie A Man Called Otto. The pic will now go exclusive in LA and NY on Dec. 30 followed by limited break on Jan. 6, and a further wide on Jan. 13, the latter point always part of the plan. The studio is pivoting their release plan over three phases given the great word of mouth they received on the title. The Marc Forster directed movie made its premiere to LA audiences last night at the Academy Museum.
In addition, they’re pulling their Screen Gems horror film True Haunting off the schedule for the time being. That pic most recently planned to go on Jan. 6, 2023. The Gary Fleder directed title follows the terrifying story of the first televised exorcism on NBC in 1971. The NBC news segment was a success, the exorcism was not. Instead, it made things worse for the Becker family who lived there.

Rita Wilson knew she wanted to bring the two Latino characters, played by Manuel Garcia Rulfo and Mariana Trevino, from “A Man Called Otto” into her song “Till You’re Home.” She fell in love with the vocals of Sebastián Yatra, who sang the Oscar-nominated “Dos Oruguitas” from Disney’s “Encanto” (2021). He had one day off and happened to be in Los Angeles, giving him one day to record the track. “We were incredibly lucky that he said yes,” says Wilson.
The actor, producer, singer and songwriter will enter the awards conversation for best original song for the upcoming Sony Pictures feature film, which stars her husband, Tom Hanks, and is directed by Marc Forster.
The track marks Wilson’s third eligible original song, which began with “Even More Mine” from “My Big Fat Greek Wedding 2” (2016) and “Everybody Cries” from “The Outpost” (2020), but this isn’t her first dabbles in the music world.
