The challenge of crafting a list of the best performances of the year never lies in thinking of people who deserve to be on it. It’s always, always in agonizing over which ones to include in the limited slots we have.
That is why, as usual, we’ve restricted ourselves here to shows that aren’t on either of our individual top 10 lists or on our list of favorite episodes (and why we further kept our ourselves to only one actor per show). It’s not that we don’t know how good Andrew Scott on Ripley or Jessica Gunning on Baby Reindeer or the entire casts of Shogun and Somebody Somewhere and My Brilliant Friend are. We do! We just really want to spread the love when we can, given the sheer amount of excellence on display during the past 12 months.
… And even then, if we’re being honest,...

Piers Morgan is speaking out against the controversial audience response to a “Weekend Update” joke about Luigi Mangione.
During last night’s “Weekend Update” segment, when host Colin Jost mentioned Mangione, the prime suspect charged with the murder of UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson, the crowd immediately erupted into cheers, prompting figures like Morgan to criticize the show.
While Jost looked uncomfortable at the crowd’s reaction, unable to finish his sentence, he reacted sarcastically by saying: “You’re wooing for justice, right?”
Morgan wrote on X: “So disgusting… and Colin Jost just smirks away as if it’s all one big giggle. Shameful moment for SNL.”

Tonight on Saturday Night Live, Bowen Yang and Ego Nwodim hosted the Cibo Express Christmas Week Airport Parade, live from Terminal C at Newark Liberty International Airport.
“It’s chaos, it’s mayhem, and everyone’s afraid,” sing their Tsa agent characters in the sketch. “It’s the Christmas Week Airport Parade!”
“Good evening from Newark,” says Nwodim, “which is how you say ‘New York’ if you’re on pills, which I am.”
Nwodim introduces herself as Agent Chartreuse Hamilton; Bowen, as Umberto.
“Umberto, what kind of name is that?” asks Chartreuse.
“Well, my parents were unsure about naming me Berto,” Yang responds, “so they told the nurse, ‘Um, Berto?'”
“Love,” Chartreuse replies. “Umberto, who can we expect to see on the parade route this year?”
Umberto says there will be “some new appearances,” as well as the return of “some old classics,” with Chartreuse then going on to...

Martin Short kicked off his monologue for his fifth time hosting “Saturday Night Live” by joking that he had to get through it quickly, because “I have 10 sketches to get to where I play an elf.”
He then added: “Also, I left my Uber driver waiting, and you know how testy Matt Gaetz can get,” referring to the disgraced former U.S. congressman.
The first half of Short’s monologue continued with old fashioned set-up, punchline jokes. He thanked “SNL” creator and executive producer Lorne Michaels for inviting him to host on the show’s 50th season, noting that they’re “very close friends.”
“We’re kind of like Trump and Elon Musk,” Short added. “Without the sexual tension.”
Short said that along with joining the illustrious Five-Timers Club as a host, he’s about to start Season 5 of “Only Murders in the Building,” and he owns five Tesla Cybertrucks.

In his fifth time hosting Saturday Night Live — fresh off a cold open featuring a who’s who of SNL royalty inducting him into the coveted Five-Timers Club — Martin Short had a few tips for the stressed cast members of the late-night sketch show on how to deal with holiday-related stress.
The Only Murders in the Building star’s opening monologue featured a Yuletide satirical carol, a musical extravaganza that recommends ushering in some Christmas cheer via pharmaceutical means.
“So you need a new prescription / just to get through Christmas / take a little edge off / make sense of your existence / just you need a new prescription / to fly higher than Blitzen / don’t snort snow and don’t smoke holly / here’s my plan to make you jolly,” Short begins in his song, dedicated to Sarah Sherman, Kenan Thompson, Heidi Gardner, Ego Nwodim and Bowen Yang.

The landmark 50th season of “Saturday Night Live” continued its string of cameos from past cast members on Sunday with a surprise appearance by Adam Sandler, who popped up in a sketch with friend and frequent co-star Chris Rock, who hosted the latest episode.

“Yep I’m just gonna own it, that was me,” Lizly says when Rock discovers she marked the wrong organ for removal on the patient.

It wouldn’t be Chris Rock hosting “Saturday Night Live” without some buttons being pushed, right?

In the sketch, Grace hosts her crime-related YouTube show where she discusses the current circumstances surrounding the alleged United Healthcare CEO shooter, Luigi Mangione, and the internet’s overt infatuation with his good looks. While mainly skewering the support being garnered for Mangione and his actions, the cold open also does a great job of poking fun of social media itself and the cesspool its become.

Legendary comedians Adam Sandler and Chris Rock made a surprise cameo on the “Saturday Night Live” stage, bringing their distinct comedic chemistry to an unforgettable medical spoof. Sandler’s surprise comeback provided a layer of humor to Rock’s hosting duties, turning a regular surgical setting into a comedic highlight.
The skit occurred in a hectic operating room and starred Sarah Sherman as Linzley, a nurse prone to a sequence of mistakes that drive the humor. Linzley accidentally removes the wrong organ and even loses an AirPod inside the patient, triggering a series of amusing mistakes.
Chris Rock was the lead surgeon, struggling to keep cool under the escalating mayhem. The situation became more serious when the patient, later identified as Sandler, awoke unexpectedly during the operation. Sandler made sarcastic remarks about his situation, saying, “Of course, I’m awake because I wasn’t given enough anesthesia,” capturing the sketch’s satirical tone.

Adam Sandler made a surprise appearance on tonight’s episode of Saturday Night Live hosted by his longtime friend and fellow comedian Chris Rock.
In the sketch, Chris Rock plays a surgeon surrounded by medical staff as surgery to remove an appendix is underway. Sarah Sherman plays a nurse named Linzley, whose first mistake was filling out the wrong form, which led to the patient’s gallbladder being removed and one of her AirPods being lost inside the patient. What makes Linzley special, albeit reckless, is that she takes full responsibility for her mistakes.
“Oh my God!” she exclaims, realizing she dropped her AirPod during surgery. “Okay, I’m just gonna own it. It was me.”
Her colleagues are livid but Rock tells them to simmer down because Linzley sounds like a Victorian ghost when she cries.
The patient, who was meant to still be under anesthesia, begins to stir.

Saturday Night Live jumped right into the top story this week: the murder of UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson and the internet’s obsession with his killer.
The NBC sketch comedy show kicked off its cold open spoofing Nancy Grace’s show Crime Stories, where she dives deep into shocking crimes. And the crime that has been dominating the news this week was the murder of the insurance company CEO. Thompson was shot and killed in midtown Manhattan on Dec. 4, and after a multiday manhunt, his killer, 26-year-old Luigi Mangione, was arrested on Dec. 9 in Pennsylvania. He has been charged with murder and is currently fighting extradition to New York City.

“Saturday Night Live’s” cold open took direct aim at the internet obsession about Luigi Mangione, the alleged killer of the United HealthCare CEO Brian Thompson with a sketch that featured Sarah Sherman as true crime maven Nancy Grace.
“Y’all psychos find him a sex symbol,” Sherman as Grace told the audience in diving into the shocking story of the brazen Dec. 4 slaying in Manhattan of Thompson walked to an investor conference. With over-the-top tabloid delivery Grace observed that Mangione “has women and gay guys hot and bothered,” describing him as “Dave Franco with Eugene Levy’s eyebrows.”
Kenan Thompson appeared later in the sketch as a man on the street who happened to encounter the killer. Interviewing him at the McDonald’s where the alleged killer was caught, Grace asked Thompson’s character “can you believe people were attracted to this sexy slayer?”
To which Thompson replied, “Women love bad boys.

“SNL” opened Saturday’s show by tackling the thirst surrounding alleged UnitedHealthcare CEO killer Luigi Mangione through the lens of Nancy Grace, with cast member Sarah Sherman having a ball with her impression of the crime TV personality.
Sherman delighted in twisting the pronunciation of words as her Nancy Grace appeared outraged by the reaction to Mangione.
“The healthcare assassin Luigi Mangione has got women and gay guys alive all hot and bothered,” Sherman’s Grace said. “I mean seriously? This guy looks like Dave Franco with Eugene Levy’s eyebrows.”
Except instead of “seriously” Sherman pronounced it more like “sry-uh-zlee?”

“Saturday Night Live” is finding its rhythm this season now that the election is out of the way, with stellar hosts Charli Xcx and now Paul Mescal bringing a youthful, silly energy to “SNL 50.” But that doesn’t mean Lorne Michaels and the cast don’t have a few political punches left to throw.
For the evening’s cold open, Dana Carvey returned once again, not to impersonate Joe Biden or Elon Musk, but to bring back one of his most beloved characters, the Church Lady. It was a welcome return that featured many headline-grabbing figures such as Matt Gaetz, played by Sarah Sherman, and Hunter Biden, played by fellow past cast member David Spade. While the show has always tried to be fair in its equal skewering of the right and the left, it definitely seems like its become more bold with its hits on both parties in its last few episodes.

Enid Strict, better known as The Church Lady, practically had to return to Saturday Night Live in the December 7 episode. After all, 2024 was, in her appraisal, “the most satanic year in history.” The cold open marked the first time Dana Carvey has reprised the role of Enid since 2016, though the SNL alum has been a regular presence in Season 50, serving as the NBC show’s President Joe Biden. “Instead of Mother Mary, little girls are looking up to the Hawk Tuah Girl,” Enid began. “Everywhere you look, you’ve got 11-year-olds dressing up like that vixen Sabrina Carpenter. Do you know who was the best carpenter? Jesus. [Singing to the tune of ‘Espresso’] He’s working late ’cause he’s a savior.” Enid then took aim at multiple political figures who were brought on as guests. As she kicked off her “Church Chat” talk show on Saturday, Enid welcomed former U.S. Representative Matt Gaetz, played by Sarah Sherman,...

With all the hype surrounding its 50th anniversary season, someone was due to stand out on Saturday Night Live this year. Marcello Hernandez seemed primed to take the spotlight. Maybe Chloe Fineman would finally be crowned queen. Sarah Sherman? Ego Nwodim? One of the new featured players? But an unexpected comedian has become the season’s breakout star: Dana Carvey.
Yeah, that Dana Carvey.
It was an unexpected giggle in the season premiere when Carvey dropped in unexpectedly as the show’s ninth (ninth!) Joe Biden impersonator. Predictably, Carvey nailed the guy in ways that more precise impressionists like James Austin Johnson couldn’t. “Guess what? And by the way…” became Biden shorthand in the way that Carvey’s “Nah ga da it!” defined George Bush. Maybe Carvey wasn’t throwing 100 mph anymore but he still had enough of a fastball to deliver quality innings during election season.

Internet personality Trisha Paytas made a surprise appearance on Saturday Night Live to participate in a sketch about Paul Mescal’s Spotify Wrapped for 2024.
Besides a few obvious additions like Sabrina Carpenter and Kendrick Lamar, Mescal’s No. 1 on Spotify “by far” was a rando personality named Satoshi Gutman. Played by Bowen Yang, Satoshi is apparently an “anti-instrumentalist sound guru out of Dundalk, Maryland.” Mescal spent over 170,000 minutes listening to him.
Sadly, Gutman wasn’t recognized by his friends played by Andrew Dismukes, Ego Nwodim and Sarah Sherman, so Mescal shared a video of Gutman singing “Y’all Made Me Celibate” while sporting a Targaryen-like wig and goatee. Oh, and he calls his fans bastards.
Gutman also has a podcast called Awakenings that made Mescal’s Spotify Wrapped. While sharing a clip from the podcast, Paytas appears as Gutman’s “Iconic” guest.
“Hey bastards!” she exclaims.

He’s reprised the role several times over the years, most recently in 2016 after the presidential election. During his most recent return, he poked fun as both Matt Gaetz, who has been wrapped up in scandals, and Hunter Biden, who was recently pardoned by his father President Joe Biden.

Dana Carvey reprised his iconic character, the Church Lady, during the newest episode’s cold open, sitting down to scold Matt Gaetz, played by Sarah Sherman;, Hunter Biden, played by David Spade; and baseball player Juan Soto, played by Marcello Hernández.
“Welcome to Church Chat. I’m the Church Lady,” Carvey says. “You know, it’s great to be back to ring out the end of 2024, the most satanic year in history. Instead of Mother Mary, little girls are looking up to the Hawk Tuah girl. Well, you know what I say, instead of hawk tuah-y, you need to walk tuah-y to a church.”
Carvey continues, “Have you seen Wicked? It’s just like The Wizard of Oz, but instead of saying, ‘Lions, tigers and bears, oh my,’ they say, ‘Lions, tigers and sluts, oh yes.’ A little bit different.

Kenan Thompson tells Variety that new cast members at “SNL” have to “pay [their] dues a little bit” when it comes to starting salaries at the NBC sketch show.
“It’s pretty notorious that it’s more so about having the job than getting paid for the job,” Thomspon, who declined to give specific salary numbers, told Variety at the American Museum of Natural History gala on Thursday night. “You gotta pay your dues a little bit, yeah.”
Thompson’s comment comes after his former costar Pete Davidson made headlines this week when he revealed that new cast members get paid around $3,000 per episode. “Do you guys know what they pay us?” Davidson, who spent eight seasons as an “SNL” cast member from 2014 to 2022, said in a video roundup for New York Magazine. “It’s like three grand an episode. I think I got dinner.”
