Indian media giant JioStar is positioning itself as a collaborator rather than gatekeeper in India’s evolving content ecosystem, with executives outlining an ambitious vision for culturally rooted storytelling that serves the country’s massive youth demographic.

Jiostar’s President of General Entertainment, Alok Jain, and Head of Cluster for Entertainment (South), Krishnan Kutty, highlighted youth-oriented programming and working with young creators as top growth areas for the Indian media conglomerate.
Speaking on a panel at the Apos entertainment summit in Bali, Indonesia, Kutty said: “Streamers have not programmed enough for Gen Z. We want to increase the volume by seven to 10 times.”
Among three content business priorities that Kutty pointed out, he said that one is to look for more “young creators from small towns” to diversify storytelling, while another priority is to continue to invest in veteran creators who have already delivered success and earned audiences’ trust. The third key area is to produce stories around proven themes that resonate with audiences, about “aspirations” and “justice.”
With over 300M subscribers on its streaming platform JioHotstar, Jiostar also broadcasts the red-hot Indian Premier League, which has shattered various viewing records.

60 Minutes took aim at President Trump’s war on diversity, equity and inclusion Sunday by focusing on the collateral damage of his controversial executive order — a group of young Black, Hispanic, Indian and Asian musicians who were denied the chance to play with the U.S. Marine Band this year.
Last year, the band — founded in 1798 and nicknamed the “President’s Own” by Thomas Jefferson — collaborated with a Chicago-based nonprofit that supports student musicians of color by giving them a chance to audition for the orchestra.
The plan was for this select group of youths to perform with their adult counterparts at a concert in May, according to the report by Scott Pelley. But Trump’s executive order against diversity programs forced them to scuttle the performance, depriving the youths of the unique opportunity.

Subhash K Jha shines the spotlight on Ravindra Jain India’s ‘Sur’ Das in this special feature that includes a throwback interview with Lata Mangeshkar about working with the composer.
Some composers are born to create beautiful melodies even if they cannot see the world and its creation. Almost entirely blind, music composer Ravindra Jain was the ‘sur’ das of the film fraternity.
Though he did not achieve any sustained super-success, he created some of the most enduring melodies of our times, such as Lata Mangeshkar’s ‘Dil mein tujhe bithake’ in Fakira, Hemlata’s ‘Ankhiyon ke jharonkhon se’ from the film of that title and Kishore Kumar’s ‘Ghungroo ki terah bajta hi raha hoon main’ from Chor Machaye Shor.
Known for his soft minimalist melodies, Ravindra Jain wrote the lyrics of most of his songs himself. His association with the Rajshri banner yielded a harvest of successful melodies...

A panel of leading television executives and creators at Film Bazaar discussed the intricacies of adapting international series for Indian audiences.
Banijay Asia’s Mrinalini Jain said that successful adaptations require more than simple translation. “There is a very fine line between translating a format and transposing it, and transposing is where the magic happens,” Jain said, citing how “The Good Wife” was reimagined as “The Trial” with two daughters instead of a son and daughter to explore different emotional dynamics within an Indian family context.
Creator Suparn S. Varma (“Ray Donovan” adaptation “Rana Naidu”) pointed out that not all international hits translate effectively to Indian screens. “Every story doesn’t translate. For example, someone offered me ‘Peaky Blinders.’ I love ‘Peaky Blinders,’ but it doesn’t translate into an Indian show because it’s so ingrained in the ethos of the culture there, society there [U.K.], that you can’t...

It is the story of a married couple, Geeta (Saloni Batra) and Shirish (Vikas Kumar), whose lives take a drastic turn after a car accident in which they run over a rickshaw puller. The film extends into more personalized details of truth and rectitude once both of them start denying the reality of their situation. Tension rises as secrets are brought out, and their ignorance begins to deteriorate the balance of their marital bliss. In fall 2020, thousands of Indian farmers began protesting new agricultural laws introduced by Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s government. Frustrated by legislation they felt threatened their livelihoods, farmers from Punjab and Haryana states staged massive demonstrations along the borders of New Delhi. Documentary filmmaker Nishtha Jain knew this uprising had a powerful story to tell. Over the next year, she and co-director Akash Basumatari immersed themselves in the protests, witnessing both the determination and hardship of those fighting for change.
The controversial farm laws opened India’s agricultural sector to private investors, allowing large corporations to negotiate directly with growers and store crops privately. Farmers believed this could drive down prices and displace them from their land. When attempts to reform the legislation stalled in Parliament, organizers called farmers across northern India to the nation’s capital in an act of non-violent civil disobedience. Streaming platforms like Netflix are often accused of being the dumping ground for movies that were meant for theatrical release but then the distributors and the producers backed out because they thought it wouldn’t be a profitable venture. How can you tell if a made-for-theater movie is being dumped for streaming? Well, made-for-theater movies start with the animated production logo video and a short or long list of people that the makers want to thank; straight-to-streaming films don’t have that. Anyway, I believe that every movie should be released in theaters because you never know whether or not it’ll find an audience and rake in an unexpected amount of money. I also believe that films should get a theatrical release, even if it’s a limited one, because every filmmaker wants their film to be projected on the biggest possible screen instead of being used as background noise.

Far from the bright lights of Bollywood, the indomitable Indian documentary filmmaking industry has been making waves globally.
The recent past has several examples of India’s international success. In 2021, Payal Kapadia’s “A Night of Knowing Nothing” won the Cannes documentary award, while Rintu Thomas and Sushmit Ghosh’s “Writing With Fire” won Sundance and was Oscar nominated. In 2022, Kartiki Gonsalves’ “The Elephant Whisperers” won the documentary short Oscar; Shaunak Sen’s “All That Breathes” won both the Sundance and Cannes documentary awards and scored an Oscar nomination, in addition to a plethora of other wins; and Vinay Shukla’s “While We Watched” won awards at Toronto and Busan.
In 2023, Sarvnik Kaur’s “Against the Tide” won a special jury award at Sundance and in 2024, Park City continued to be a happy hunting ground for India with a win for Anirban Dutta and Anupama Srinivasan’s “Nocturnes.” 2024 has continued to bring cheer for India,...

Nishtha Jain’s “Farming the Revolution” — winner of the best international feature documentary prize at Hot Docs — captures the vast emotional scope of revolutionary movements. Chronicling the lengthy stand-off between Indian farmers and the Modi government, during which tens of thousands of Sikh and Punjabi farm workers occupied highways and state borders, the film is remarkable in its audio-visual inquiry into protest as a cultural movement, and in its excavation of the emotional highs and lows involved in making lasting change.
Over eight months between 2020 and 2021, millions of people would weave in and out of these caravans of trucks and makeshift houses surrounding New Delhi, in the hope of curbing new laws that would open Indian agriculture to predatory corporate interests while plunging farmers into poverty. Jain captures the sweeping magnitude of the protests through overhead drone shots and careful compositions on the ground — she often shoots large crowds from just above eye level,...

Curtis “50 Cent” Jackson is suing his ex-girlfriend and the mother of his son, Daphne Joy Narvaez, for defamation following her public accusation in March that he raped her while the two were in a relationship more than a decade ago.
The rapper/actor/producer filed the suit in Texas on May 6 after Narvaez posted a statement that he had raped her on Instagram on March 28. That was prompted by Jackson’s reported attempts to gain sole custody of their 11-year-old son, Sire, following the bombshell lawsuit filed by producer Rodney “Lil Rod” Jones Jr. against Sean “Diddy” Combs, which among many explosive allegations of sex trafficking and grooming, named Narvaez as a sex worker alongside Combs’ ex-girlfriend, Yung Miami.
“I am tired of upholding and protecting an image to our son that you have never even earned. Let’s put the real focus on your true evil actions of...

Eminent Indian documentarian Nishtha Jain’s latest effort is an account of the epic, year-long farmers’ protest that took place in India in 2020-21.
“Farming the Revolution,” which world premieres at Hot Docs, follows the millions of Indian farmers who gathered during the height of Covid-19 lockdown at the borders of the country’s capital, Delhi, to protest against newly enacted farm laws. The farmers believed that if implemented, these laws would negatively impact the government-protected farmers’ markets, leaving them to the vagaries of the free market.
Jain is known for jute weaving documentary “The Golden Thread,” which won the top prize at Bergamo this year and multiple award-winning woman empowerment film “Gulabi Gang” (2012).
“It was the Covid year. We had already witnessed heart-rending scenes when the sudden announcement of all-India lockdown saw millions of Indian migrant workers walk to their homes thousands of miles away from the cities. A...

The Golden Thread by documentarian Nishtha Jain opens up with a 16-minute long wordless and contemplative sequence. From the lovingly shot lush green of jute plants bending in the wind amid the chirp of birds and insects, to a farmer harvesting them and putting in sheaf, and a natural thread woven by old buzzing machines in dated factory interiors. It evokes a feeling of longing, nostalgia, and indefinite loss… But unfortunately, this doc, or rather a poetic impression, hardly offers anything more than just the sentimental gaze.
The Golden Thread is screening at Indian Film Festival of Los Angeles
The director, who came to international attention with her bold and sparklingly energetic female-empowering feature doc “Gulabi Gang”, takes us to the once prosperous world of old Bengali jute mills. Nowadays, their glory days are long over. The demand for jute has dropped over the years, courtesy of plastic domination, and the old-fashioned factories are closing.

Reality dating show “Love Island’ is edited based on social media responses to the contestants an ITV exec has revealed.
“Social media is part of the success of ‘Love Island,’” Angela Jain, director of unscripted U.K. at ITV Studios told Channel 4 boss during a panel at the Royal Television Society conference in Cambridge on Wednesday.
“One of the smartest decisions we made right at the very beginning was to embed the digital team on location with the [‘Love Island’] production team in Majorca to create a feedback loop,” Jain explained. “Effectively the team are monitoring social media to really understand how the viewer is responding to the content and we would change — as we are able to because this is a fast turnaround show — we were able to change the editorial if we felt that one character was coming to the foreground more than the other and we would respond to it.
