The AI Hollywood race is intensifying as Luma AI, which is behind one of the more novel of a new wave of video generators, says it’s planting a flag in Los Angeles.

The Northern California company is starting Dream Lab LA, a studio space where it hopes to explain its mission to the entertainment business while recruiting and training filmmakers to use its tools. The news is the latest move from what is becoming an onslaught of companies making AI video models (basically, products that let a person create or change a video without staging a physical shoot) into the filmmaking space.

“We need even higher levels of intelligence in creative work, and that’s what Luma is committed to building,” Amit Jain, the company’s CEO, said in an interview with The Hollywood Reporter.

The Mouse House has tapped Angela Jain, director of unscripted at ITV Studios, for the newly created role as Disney+’s head of content in Europe, the Middle East, and Africa.

Jain will effectively replace Liam Keelan, who stepped down in October last year, though her role is more senior, and Disney has switched reporting lines as part of efforts to boost international originals.

Joining in September, Jain will report to Eric Schrier, president of Disney Television Studios and Global Original Television Strategy. Keelan’s boss was Diego Londono, now SVP of networks and sports.

Nishta Jain’s Farming the Revolution, a film about Indian farmers rising up against new laws, picked up the best international feature documentary prize at the Hot Docs Canadian International Documentary Festival on Friday night.

The top jury prize win at the festival means Jain’s film, which world premiered at Hot Docs, will qualify for consideration in the best documentary feature category at the Academy Awards.

Other winners included the special jury prize for the international feature documentary went to Death of a Saint. The doc follows director Patricia Bbaale Bandak as she returns to her birthplace in Uganda after giving birth to her own daughter on the same day her mother was killed by two gunmen in that African country 24 years earlier.

Espresso Media International has picked up international rights to the documentary series “Balance: A Perimenopause Journey,” executive produced by Alyssa Milano and directed by Dallas-based monk-filmmakers Sadhvi Siddhali Shree and Sadhvi Anubhuti, ahead of this year’s MipTV.

Produced by Siddhali Shree and Anubhuti’s Texas-based non-profit production organization Siddhayatan Tirth Productions, the series explores the challenges women face when going through perimenopause, or the transition to menopause.

The four-part series, currently in production, “brings this vital issue to an underserved audience: women facing perimenopause at any age, as well as a secondary market of men who witness loved ones going through difficult changes,” Espresso Media stated.
