Magic Fair, a Miami-Paris based indie sales company and Hong Kong- and Paris-based All Rights Entertainment have launched rights sales on upcoming feature animation “Pigsy,” directed by Chiu Li-Wei (“Barkley”) during the Cannes Film Festival’s Marche du Film.

The film is a reimagining of the classic Chinese tale “Journey to the West.” The story follows a self-absorbed and lazy pig on a journey to lasting happiness. Set in a distant future, the film sees Pigsy embark on a deceitful quest for a better life, only to find that true happiness may be closer than he thinks.

The production has recently added Taiwanese stars Greg Han, Liu Kuan-Ting, Harlem Yu, Tuo Tsung-Hua, Chung Hsin-Ling, Ivy Shao, Waa Wei and K.R. Bros. The film is to be completed in time for release at Chinese New Year in early 2024. Production is by the Netherland’s studio Submarine with Taiwan’s Greener Grass (“GrX”) and Studio2.

Taipei-based Screenworks Asia is launching international sales on award-winning director Hsin-Ying Sung’s female-centric psychological thriller Lost In Perfection ahead of the Cannes Market.

The film is the first live-action production from Sung following award-winning animated feature On Happiness Road, which scooped Best Animation Feature at Taiwan’s Golden Horse Awards and was also selected for the Wide Angle section at Busan International Film Festival.

The film revolves around a TV anchor whose apparently perfect life unravels when she discovers her dad may have become the victim of a romance scam. Making matters worse, the scammer is accused of murdering men she dated and the anchor teams with the local prosecutor to investigate the crime.

Yu-Wei Shao (More Than Blue: The Series) heads the cast of the film, playing the anchor, alongside Mei-Hsiu Lin (Zone Pro Site) playing the murder suspect, and Rhydian Vaughan (Monga) as the local prosecutor.

Taiwan-based streaming platform Catchplay and its production subsidiary Screenworks Asia have unveiled a slate of Mandarin-language originals, led by crime thriller series Not A Murder Story.

The titles include regional collaborations involving co-production partners from Hong Kong, Indonesia and Singapore, with further notable projects including teen romance series I Can See You Shine and psychological thriller Love Is A Bitch from award-winning filmmaker Sung Hsin-Yin.

Taiwan-based regional streamer Catchplay and its production subsidiary Screenworks Asia have announced a slate of Mandarin-language originals, headed by eight-part crime thriller Not A Murder Story, directed by Chen-Nien Ko (The Silent Forest) and starring Kuan-Ting Liu (A Sun).

Currently in post-production, the series is a co-production between Screenworks Asia, Taiwan’s Gala Television Corp and Hong Kong’s MakerVille Company. The story revolves around an aspiring actor who wakes up one morning with a dead woman beside him. Sonia Sui (Women Who Flirt) and Gingle Wang (Detention) also star.

Also in post-production is coming-of-age comedy drama I Can See You Shine, scripted by Xin-Xuan Huang (The Making Of An Ordinary Woman I & II). The story of two high school friends, one of whom is a second generation immigrant, aims to challenge stereotypes around immigrant families in Taiwan.
