‘Boop! The Musical’ Sets Broadway Closing, Latest In A String Of Post-Tony Early Departures
Image
Boop! The Musical will play its final Broadway performance on Sunday, July 13, producers announced today. The show will have played 25 previews and 112 regular performances.

The musical is the fourth Broadway production — after Smash, Real Women Have Curves and Dead Outlaw — to announce an early close after coming up empty at the Tony Awards earlier this month.

Featuring the Tony-nominated breakout star Jasmine Amy Rogers in the title role, Boop! began previews March 11 and opened to lukewarm reviews (except for the widely praised Rogers) on April 5 at the Broadhurst Theatre.

The production, capitalized for up to $26 million (which it has not recouped), struggled at the box office, with attendance usually below the 80% mark of the Broadhurst’s capacity. For the week ending June 22, the show grossed a below-break-even $602,017 with a very modest...

‘Boop! The Musical’ Will Close on Broadway in July
Image
Boop! The Musical will play its final Broadway performance on July 13.

The closing announcement is the fourth new musical in the past several weeks, following Smash, Dead Outlaw and Real Women Have Curves. All are new musicals that came to Broadway this spring, that were hoping for boosts from the Tony Awards, but did not take home any trophies.

Boop star Jasmine Amy Rogers was nominated for a Tony Award this year, and the show also received nods for best costume design and best choreography.

The musical, directed and choreographed by Jerry Mitchell, opened at the Broadhurst Theater April 5, after starting previews March 11.

The show received mixed to positive reviews for the storyline that reimagines the cartoon character come to life in modern day New York. Rogers was highlighted as a standout, and she won the Drama Desk Award for outstanding lead performance, an award which she shared with Gypsy’s Audra McDonald.

Jasmine Amy Rogers Is The Life Of The Cartoon Party In ‘Boop! The Musical’ – Deadline Q&a
Image
Jasmine Amy Rogers grew up feeling like a cartoon character. “My voice for a kid my age was a little lower than all the rest of the girls,” she says, “but it was also very, very raspy and also a little squeaky, and so people always used to tell me that I sounded like a cartoon character.”

Who better then to give life to Betty Boop, the intoxicating character that gives Boop! The Musical its name, that classic cartoon Jazz Age flapper with the funny voice and a head big and round enough to convey innocence and sophistication, flirtatiousness and humor. In an era when women were testing norms – and undue modesty was the first to go – Betty was star and a 1930s sensation, with legs for days, a bob as short as her dress and heels impossibly high, a New Modern Woman who proved popular with children and adults alike.

Broadway’s ‘Suffs’ Announces January Closing; Producing Team Includes Hillary Clinton
Image
Suffs, the double-Tony Award winning Broadway musical by Shaina Taub that counts Hillary Rodham Clinton among its producers, will close January 5, 2025, producers announced today.

The well-reviewed musical about the suffragist movement began previews at the Music Box Theatre on March 26, with an official opening on April 18. When it closes, it will have played 24 previews and 301 regular performances.

A national tour will launch at Seattle’s 5th Avenue Theatre in September 2025, with additional cities to be announced in the coming months.

Though the musical did solid business throughout most of the summer – and scored six Tony nominations (including Best Musical), winning two (Taub’s book and score) – business had been dropping. For the week ending October 6, attendance was at just 78% of the Music Box’s capacity. The weekly gross that week was $679,589, the lowest take since a summer high of $942,785 for the week ending June 23.

Produced by Clinton, Malala Yousafzai, Jill Furman,...

Nikki M. James (‘Suffs’) on portraying the ‘unflinching’ Ida B. Wells in a musical about ‘incredible, powerful, flawed’ suffragists [Exclusive Video Interview]
Image
“I think it’s just the stark reality of all the things that happened to this one person and the level of clearheaded determination she had,” shares Nikki M. James of what surprised her the most about Ida B. Wells, the suffragist she portrays in the new musical “Suffs” on Broadway. An early version of the musical by writer and composer Shaina Taub described the civil rights icon as “unflinching,” which the actress says is the “perfect word” for Wells. In addition to her “huge hutzpah,” the Tony Award winner admires how she balanced “all of her unbelievable work” with motherhood, which is something she herself is doing now, opening a new musical in New York while raising an 18-month-old child. “I just am in total awe of her and it’s a connection I think we share,” she adds. Watch our exclusive video interview above.

Waitress The Musical Review
Image
Based on the 2007 comedy-drama directed by Adrienne Shelley, Waitress: The Musical, which made a splash on Broadway from 2016 to 2020, made a triumphant return in 2021. Now, Bleecker Street is bringing Broadway to the big screen for a limited time. Starring Sara Bareilles and an impressive supporting cast, Waitress: The Musical serves up a rich and full-calorie treat but gets a little heavy with sweetness in some places.

Jenna, the titular waitress, struggles with her abusive and unhappy marriage, an unwanted pregnancy, and her job as the baker of a diner. Baking is her means of escape and fantasy, creating delicious confections based on her mood and life experiences. Through an ill-advised yet passionate affair with her sympathetic gynecologist, Dr. Pomatter, Jenna rediscovers her sense of self-love and hope for the future alongside a cast of her colorful coworkers at the diner.

Lin-Manuel Miranda in Hamilton (2020)
Waitress Review: Sara Bareilles Serves a Slice of Charm in Musical Pro-Shot
Lin-Manuel Miranda in Hamilton (2020)
The 2016 Tony Awards were something of a rout: With its 11 wins, Hamilton was the only new musical to take home any trophies at all. But it wasn’t the only Broadway smash of the season. Waitress, the smaller-scale, utterly lovely adaptation of writer-director Adrienne Shelly’s 2007 film, ran for nearly four years, finally closing in January 2020.

Like Hamilton, Waitress’s composer-lyricist would come to also star in the production: Singer-songwriter Sara Bareilles appeared for three short stints in the lead role, causing the box office to surge each time. When theaters reopened, so, too, did Waitress, in a limited remounting in late 2021, designed in part to allow the cameras to capture Bareilles’s performance. This film was no doubt inspired by the artistic and commercial success of Hamilton’s “pro-shot,” as official films of stage performances have come to be known in the theater community.

As a film, this pro-shot...

Official Trailer for 'Waitress: The Musical' Playing in Theaters This Fall
Image
"When there's a whisk, there's a way." Bleecker Street has revealed an official trailer for the film version of the hit Broadway show Waitress: The Musical, which is coming to movie theaters nationwide in early December. Based on the 2007 movie written by Adrienne Shelly (and starring Keri Russell), the Waitress musical was one of the longest-running shows in recent Broadway history, playing a total of more than 1500 performances at the Brooks Atkinson Theatre. It first opened in Broadway in 2016. The show returned for a limited engagement at the Ethel Barrymore Theatre to celebrate Broadway's re-opening in the fall of 2021. The Broadway show stars Sara Bareilles (who also wrote the music & lyrics) as Jenna, who's joined by Drew Gehling, Charity Dawson, Dakin Matthews, Christopher Fitzgerald, Eric Anderson, and Anastacia McCleskey. Jenna is a pregnant, unhappily married small-town pie baker with big dreams. She meets a newcomer to her town and falls...

‘Waitress’ Alumni Will Join Sara Bareilles For Musical’s Limited Broadway Return
Image
Sara Bareilles won’t be the only Waitress cast member with prior stage-diner experience when the musical reopens on Broadway in September: Producers announced today that Waitress vets Drew Gehling, Eric Anderson, Charity Angel Dawson, Christopher Fitzgerald, Caitlin Houlahan, Dakin Matthews and Joe Tippett will be back for at least part of the show’s limited engagement.

Producers Barry and Fran Weissler previously announced that Bareilles, the actress and the musical’s composer, will take the title role for a limited run at the Ethel Barrymore Theatre from September 2 through October 17. The production will continue without Bareilles until January 9, 2022.

Exactly how long the other cast members will stay with the engagement wasn’t specified, but given their busy careers and other Broadway commitments, limited stays are more than likely. Fitzgerald, who will play Ogie, is expected to return to Broadway’s Company this fall, and Matthews, cast as Joe, plays...
