There's a moment in "The Florida Project," the Willem Dafoe-starring drama from Sean Baker about a six-year-old girl named Moonee (Brooklynn Prince) living in a motel with her mother Halley (Bria Vinaite), that I think about daily. Halley and one of her friends go out to eat one night and get food from a stand. We know that Halley doesn't have a lot of money — we've watched her steal, scam, and engage in sex work to make ends meet — but she still puts a tip in the jar for the food stand worker. To those who have never grown up poor, it's a moment that likely went unnoticed. But to those of us who have, it was a signal that this film came from someone who genuinely wanted to present an authentic look at how people living in poverty make joy in their lives without financial security. That includes always tipping service industry workers,...

Nothing you read will prepare you for “Anora,” Sean Baker’s raucous, unpredictable comedy that won the Palme d’Or at Cannes. Last May, Baker and his star Mikey Madison sat in the audience at the Lumiere and watched all the other contenders accept their awards. As George Lucas presented a special prize to his chum Francis Ford Coppola, Baker said to himself, “Did we just win the Palme d’Or?” Sure enough, jury chief Greta Gerwig soon called him up to the stage.

While San Diego Comic-Con continues to bring one surprise after another, a bear hopes to steal some of the spotlight with news about sticking its snoot into more nose candy for Cocaine Bear 2. According to industry scooper Daniel Rpk, a sequel to last year’s dark comedy thriller Cocaine Bear is in the works, with Elizabeth Banks producing and possibly getting back behind the camera as the project’s director.
Speaking with Rolling Stone last year about a possible sequel, Banks told the outlet, “I had an absolutely great time working on the (first movie). I loved how subversive, crazy, silly, and funny it was. I loved surprising people with the cast. I don’t think anybody was expecting Margo Martindale, who’s 70 years old, to shoot that kid. We had a lot fun, and if I got the opportunity to surprise the audience and delight myself again, I would take it.

Sean Baker's latest sex-worker comedy, Anora, screens at Cannes this week and this is a chance to catch up with his Oscar-nominated comedy drama about a precocious six-year-old and her mum. The Magic Castle hotel might not hold many tricks up its sleeve for single mum Hallee (Bria Vinaite) but it's an enchanted playground so far as little Moonee (Brooklynn Prince) and her friends are concerned. They run – and skip and frolic – through the film with an infectious energy, while illustrating the unique pressures that exist for families who live in these sorts of circumstances. Young Prince is a natural and it's a treat to see Willem Dafoe in a warmer role for once, as the benevolent Magic Castle manager Bobby trying to nudge the older members of the community into line. The 2024 Cannes Film Festival may be lighter on glitz and glamour than in years past, but that means arthouse and international fare from emerging and established filmmakers will get a chance to shine. Still, at least two American auteurs, Francis Ford Coppola (“Megalopolis”) and Paul Schrader, have films in the main competition for the first time in decades. David Cronenberg (“The Shrouds”) and Yorgos Lanthimos (“Kinds of Kindness”) are also back at the festival, with both making personal stories in their own way: Cronenberg, here, reckons with grief over the death of his wife seven years ago, while Lanthimos appears to retreat back into “Dogtooth” territory in a film that’s almost a rebuke of the global success he’s acquired with “Poor Things” and “The Favourite.”
Sean Baker, Andrea Arnold, Ali Abbasi, Jia Zhangke, Karim Aïnouz, and Paolo Sorrentino are also back at Cannes this year with new films in the competition.

You’ve played Boar On The Floor. Now, get ready for The Bird Is The Word. Brian Cox, in the wake of wrapping up on Succession, is starring in coming-of-age film Little Wing, playing Jaan – a curmudgeonly pigeon-fancier from Portland, whose best bird is pilfered by Brooklynn Prince’s unruly teen Kaitlyn. Initially hoping to sell the prized pidge and fix her parents’ finances, Kaitlyn instead teams with Jaan to get the bird back. It’s a role that, inevitably, led to Cox spending much time with coo-ing co-stars – and while the age-old mantra indicates to never work with animals, they left Cox’s feathers largely un-ruffled.
“I had to interact a fair bit with the pigeons,” Cox tells Empire in the new issue. “They could be quite boisterous, but once they were in their cages, they were actually rather well-behaved. And I didn’t get shat on once.” Consider that a result.

"What makes them come home?" "They love their home so much, they'll die trying to get back to it." That's a bit on the nose with this story. Paramount+ has revealed an official trailer for a movie titled Little Wing, a drama based on a true story about a moody young girl struggling with her parents and their divorce. Daisy Ridley has a lot going on these days, but she made a point to carve out some time to support The Marsh King’s Daughter, a film that was a promotional casualty of the now-resolved SAG-AFTRA strike. The English actor has plenty of reasons to be proud of her work in Neil Burger’s thriller, as she’s tasked with playing the psychologically complex and physical role of Helena. As a child, the character lived off the grid with her mother (Caren Pistorius) and father (Ben Mendelsohn) until she was abruptly and dramatically whisked away to lead a more civilized life.
Ridley shares the role with Brooklynn Prince, who plays young Helena in flashbacks. The two actors happened to have a viral moment in 2017, as Prince met Ridley backstage at Good Morning America. Ridley then surprised Prince once more during a The Florida Project Q&a with THR’s Scott Feinberg.

Daisy Ridley, the cornerstone star of Disney's recent "Star Wars" trilogy, has a new movie out in theaters right now. Unfortunately, it seems like getting that news out to the masses proved challenging as hardly anyone went to see the film in question, which is director Neil Burger's "The Marsh King's Daughter." Sad to say, the movie tanked on its opening weekend, failing to even crack the Top 10 on the charts despite playing on more than 1,000 screens.
"The Marsh King's Daughter" debuted at just $849,120 over the weekend, putting it all the way at number 13 on the charts, per Box Office Mojo. Even Disney's re-release of "The Nightmare Before Christmas" made more, and we're talking about a 30-year-old movie that has been in re-release for three weekends.

Plot: A woman seeks revenge against the man who kidnapped her mother.
Review: I knew next to nothing of The Marsh King’s Daughter when going into it except for the cast. Ben Mendelsohn, Daisy Ridley, and Garrett Hedlund are some of my favorite actors, so really, that’s all the film needed to sell me on it. But what followed was a gripping character piece with a tremendous performance at its center. While there are some pacing issues and a familiar story, the performances and cinematography manage to carry the film. This takes what could have been a standard tale of kidnapping and puts it through an interesting filter. And I think a lot of that concerns its strong introduction.

Helena (Daisy Ridley), the title character of “The Marsh King’s Daughter,” is a woman living what she thinks is a safe, comfortable middle-class existence — just like the heroes of “Cape Fear” or “Straw Dogs.” And like those characters, she’s ripped out of her cocoon by a man with a vengeful agenda. In this case, the self-righteous stalker-invader is her father, Jacob (Ben Mendelsohn), who raised her in a cabin in the marshland wilderness of Michigan’s Upper Peninsula, teaching her how to hunt and survive. In the film’s early scenes, we might almost be watching some off-the-grid version of the Laura Ingalls Wilder story, as Helena drinks in the woodland skills taught by Jacob, with each lesson marked by a homemade tattoo (he inks a deer on her neck when she gets her first kill).
As we discover, though, this Pa is no benevolent patriarch. He’s a...

In 2018, Ben Foster and Thomasin McKenzie starred in a wilderness drama called Leave No Trace in which a father taught his daughter to live off the grid well out of view of “civilization.” I thought of that as I viewed the new thriller The Marsh King’s Daughter, but for some reason this story kept reminding me more of 1962’s terrifying suspense drama Cape Fear, as well as its Martin Scorsese-directed 1991 remake. Maybe it is just because of the remote setting and a key character who comes back and sparks terror in the hearts of a family that didn’t know what they were in for.
Jacob (Ben Mendelsohn) is known as the elusive Marsh King, a man who kidnaps a young woman named Beth (Caren Pistorius) and takes her to the remote marshlands of Michigan, where he torments her and becomes father to their daughter Helena (Brooklynn Prince...

In the opening of Neil Burger’s The Marsh King’s Daughter, based on Karen Dionne’s 2017 novel of the same name, it’s not the king or his daughter who first captivates us but the marsh itself. As the film begins, the camera crawls through the reeds growing in the swamps of Michigan’s Upper Peninsula, capturing scuttling bugs and twisting branches in loving close-ups while the softest sunlight breaks in between the trees and ethereal music echoes in the air. Recalling Terrence Malick’s films, the moment paints the marshlands as a kind of paradise.
We’re immediately drawn into the world as it exists to young Helena Holbrook (Brooklynn Prince). The hunter-gatherer existence that defines Helena and her family is the only one she’s ever known. For Helena, the marshlands are a place of comfort and wonder. This is largely because her father, Jacob (Ben Mendelsohn), raised...

Based on nothing but its name, Neil Burger’s “The Marsh King’s Daughter” sounds like the first draft of a Shakespeare comedy or maybe a fantasy adventure about a princess who inherits a spirited wetland full of talking birds and bullfrogs. Indeed, the title first belonged to a Hans Christian Andersen story about a pair of talking storks who build their nest atop the home of a Viking warrior, and Burger’s movie — much like the 2017 Karen Dionne novel on which it’s based — re-uses it as part of a conscious effort to set fantastical expectations for what turns out to be a grounded (if somewhat dubious) psychological thriller.
It’s a fitting misdirect for a film about a tween girl whose seemingly magical childhood, spent way off the grid in the wilderness of Michigan’s Upper Peninsula, is violently disenchanted by the discovery that her father is actually a...

Daisy Ridley stars as a woman harboring a terrible secret in the feature film adaptation of Karen Dionne’s bestselling novel The Marsh King’s Daughter. The gripping trailer teases a little too much of the plot, so if you want to go in completely unaware of Ridley’s character’s past, don’t click play.
In addition to Daisy Ridley (the Star Wars franchise), the adaptation stars Emmy Award-winner Ben Mendelsohn (Bloodline), Screen Actors Guild nominee Garrett Hedlund (Mudbound), Caren Pistorius (Unhinged), Brooklynn Prince (The Florida Project), and Gil Birmingham (Yellowstone).
Elle Smith and Mark L. Smith adapted Dionne’s novel and Neil Burger directed. Black Bear’s Teddy Schwarzman, Anonymous Content’s Keith Redmon, and Mark L. Smith served as producers. Michael Heimler, Charles Miller, Cliff Roberts, Robert Simonds, Adam Fogelson, John Friedberg, and Samuel J. Brown executive produced. Black Bear provided the finacing.

Daisy Ridley is returning to the silver screen this fall in "The Marsh King's Daughter," and it looks to be another unique entry in her filmography after wrapping up the "Star Wars" sequel trilogy in 2019. Based on Karen Dionne's novel of the same name and hailing from Lionsgate, this is an action/thriller that sees Ridley going toe-to-toe with another "Star Wars" alum by way of "Rogue One" in the form of Ben Mendelsohn, who is playing her estranged father. Let's get ready to rumble.
It's the latest in a string of unique, post-franchise choices that Ridley has made, including starring in the unfortunately disastrous YA adaptation "Chaos Walking" or giving comedy a go in Judd Apatow's "The Bubble." She also starred in the drama "Sometimes I Think About Dying," which debuted at Sundance earlier this year. And yes, she's going to return as Rey in a galaxy far,...

When Helena's father escapes from prison, Helena must find the strength to face her demons and the man she once idolized, knowing that her father will come to hunt both Helena and her family. Now she must get revenge. Daisy Ridley stars as Helena Pelletier, with Brooklynn Prince, Ben Mendelsohn, Garrett Hedlund, Caren Pistorius, and Joey Carson. This has a slick premise...

“The Marsh King’s Daughter” is finally headed to the big screen. The adaptation of the bestselling 2017 novel by Karen Dionne, starring Daisy Ridley, Ben Mendelsohn and Garrett Hedlund, is due in theaters on Oct. 6, and the trailer has just arrived, still wet from the swamp. Watch it above.
Ridley plays a woman who, when she was a child (Brooklynn Prince plays her as a child), was abducted by her violent father (Mendelsohn). When he escapes from prison, she is forced to confront her past, open up to her husband (Hedlund) and brace herself for her father’s return. Will she make it out alive? Or will her father, nicknamed the Marsh King, take her down, once and for all?
The project was initially developed back in 2018, with “The Revenant” writer Mark L. Smith penning a screenplay for “The Imitation Game” director Morten Tyldum and Alicia Vikander in the role now played by Ridley.

Director Elizabeth Banks’ “character-driven thriller” Cocaine Bear (read our review Here, get a copy at This Link) wasn’t exactly a blockbuster – it earned $89 million at the worldwide box office on a budget in the range of 30 to 35 million – but it did get a lot of positive attention when it was released. And I thought it was a blast to watch. So I welcome a Cocaine Bear 2… and during an interview with Rolling Stone, Banks said she would also welcome it.
When asked about the possibility of working on a sequel, Banks told Rolling Stone, “I had an absolutely great time working on the (first movie). I loved how subversive, crazy, silly, and funny it was. I loved surprising people with the cast. I don’t think anybody was expecting Margo Martindale, who’s 70 years old, to shoot that kid.
