Welcome to My Favorite Scene! In this series, IndieWire speaks to actors behind a few of our favorite television performances about their personal-best onscreen moment and how it came together.
Editor’s note: The following interview contains spoilers for Netflix’s “The Fall of the House of Usher.”
Much like her character in Netflix’s “The Fall of the House of Usher,” Carla Gugino is an actor who feels like she’s everywhere.
From her film work in “Gerald’s Game,” “Spy Kids,” “Watchmen,” and more, to TV roles dating back to “Saved by the Bell” through “Entourage” and as recent as “The Girls on the Bus” on Max (I had to spare a few moments of our interview to bring up Greg Berlanti’s “Political Animals”), Gugino feels as powerful, versatile, and ubiquitous as Verna, the shape-shifting devil puppeteering the eponymous fall.

Disney capitalized on its popular movies by releasing sequels several decades after the original films, setting the record for the longest gap between sequels. A sequel to the iconic film Easy Rider was released after 43 years, but was poorly received. The longest gap ever between live-action sequels was 54 years, as seen with Mary Poppins Returns, which successfully maintained the charm of the original.
It can appear like every popular movie quickly churned out a follow-up before audiences even had time to take in the first film, however, there were some examples of movies having decades-long gaps between sequels. In the world of animation, this was easier to do as characters didn’t age and sequels could pick up right where they left off without any issues, although live-action movies have also returned after seriously long breaks. Sometimes these sequels recast their long-dormant characters, but other times the original actor returned.

There will be no fourth season for Disney Channel’s Secrets of Sulpher Springs. The network has canceled the time-travel mystery-adventure series after three seasons, Deadline has confirmed.
Created, written and executive produced by Tracey Thomson (The Young and the Restless), Secrets of Sulpher Springs followed 12-year-old Griffin Campbell (Preston Oliver), whose world had been upended by his father, Ben (Josh Braaten), after he moved the family from Chicago to take ownership of an abandoned hotel property, The Tremont. The family—which also includes Griffin’s mother, Sarah (Kelly Frye), and his younger twin siblings, Wyatt (Landon Gordon) and Zoey (Madeleine McGraw)—lived in The Tremont in hopes of restoring it to the lively vacation destination it once was. On his first day at his new school, Griffin heard rumors that the hotel was haunted by the ghost of Savannah (Elle Graham), a girl who disappeared decades ago. He soon...

Lenore's death in The Fall of the House of Usher is a tragedy that caused Carla Gugino to cry when she first read the script. Lenore was the only innocent member of the Usher family, and her death had a profound impact on Verna, the demon-like character played by Gugino. Verna, despite being a villainous character, regrets having to kill Lenore and recognizes the significance of Lenore's actions in making the world a better place.
There was one scene in The Fall of the House of Usher that made Carla Gugino emotional. Gugino plays Verna, the demon-like creature that agrees to a deal with Roderick and Madeline Usher that eventually claims the lives of every member of the House of Usher. Throughout the show, Verna regularly sits around in various forms, smiling and subtly tormenting the family members.

Doctor Sleep's lack of popularity can be attributed to its deviation from the source material and marketing as a sequel to The Shining. Birds of Prey fell short of expectations despite Margot Robbie's praised performance and the popularity of Harley Quinn, due to limited audience recognition of the titular heroic team and its R rating. Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny faced obstacles in reaching a wider audience due to its franchise's lack of appeal to younger viewers and the perceived lack of interest in a farewell to the character.

The original cut of the baseball boy scene in Doctor Sleep was even more gruesome and violent than what was shown in the final version. Stephen King, the author of The Shining, demanded that the violence in the scene be toned down, as he felt it was too brutal. The final cut of the baseball boy death scene was already disturbing enough, and the cast agreed that toning it down was the right decision, as actor Jacob Tremblay's performance was enough to carry the impact.
The Doctor Sleep baseball boy scene was the most brutal of the movie, but the original cut was even worse. Directed by Mike Flanagan, the 2019 sequel to The Shining is based on the book of the same name by Stephen King. Many films feature adult-child duos, and their chemistry can greatly enhance the movie. The dynamics between adult and child characters can vary, from troubled adults teaming up with children to children being the strong ones who teach adults. Some adult-child duos, such as Roy and Alexandria in "The Fall" or Logan and Laura in "Logan," form deep bonds that help them heal and overcome challenges together.
Many movies have an adult and a child as their main characters, and though not all pairs have had good on-screen chemistry, many others did and elevated their movies. Adult-child duos in films are not just found in children’s movies, and there are many kids who stole the spotlight in drama, action, and even horror movies either with their performances or their characters' stories. The children in The Fall of the House of Usher would have had peaceful deaths if they heeded Verna's warning, as shown by Lenore's example, according to series creator Mike Flanagan. Warning: Spoilers lie ahead for The Fall of the House of Usher!
Verna, the antagonist in The Fall of the House of Usher, may be depicted as evil, but is actually a shape-shifting character offering honest conversations to the privileged and powerful Usher family. Verna's deal with the Usher siblings ultimately leads to their deaths, but she is not the true villain. The Ushers' desire for wealth and success is what drives the tragic events in the show. Verna shows mercy to Lenore, Roderick's granddaughter, granting her a non-painful death and revealing the positive future her death will bring by creating a non-profit organization to help domestic abuse victims. Verna's intentions are not purely evil, but rather tied to fulfilling her contract with Roderick and Madeline.
Despite seemingly being the main antagonist for the show, Carla Gugino offers some clarification on The Fall of the House of Usher's family death deal.

The Fall of the House of Usher is filmmaker Mike Flanagan’s gloriously morbid remix of author Edgar Allen Poe’s best-known stories and poems, and it’s winning raves from critics (with a 92 percent score on Rotten Tomatoes). Even those totally unfamiliar with Poe probably found some glimmer of recognition amid the show’s nods to his best-known tales — such as “The Pit and the Pendulum,” “The Raven” and “The Cask of Amontillado” — given how Poe’s stories have threaded through pop culture over the last 175 years or so.
But even Poe superfans probably couldn’t spot all the references — because there are dozens scattered throughout the show’s eight Gothic episodes.

Mike Flanagan brings back several of his favorite actors for his new Netflix series “The Fall of the House of Usher,” including wife Kate Siegel, Carla Gugino, Bruce Greenwood and Henry Thomas. You’ll also recognize several cast members from the canceled-too-soon “Midnight Club” and a few from the film “Doctor Sleep” and the limited series “Midnight Mass.”
And you might need help keeping track of who’s who within the Usher family, headed up by Roderick and Madeleine Usher. Flanagan drew on various Edgar Allan Poe writings for this macabre tale, including the title story, as well as “The Masque of the Red Death,” “The Raven” and “The Pit and the Pendulum.”

For most people, choices made incur consequences. One of the most intriguing components of life is the realization that we all have a tab, and at one point or another, a bill will come due. The 1% who hold the majority of the wealth and influence globally typically don’t abide by these same rules. The upper echelons of society move through life seemingly without repercussions by leaching off the powerless. Mike Flanagan’s “The Fall of the House of Usher,” which earns its title from an 1839 Edgar Allen Poe story, showcases the demise of a family who, after being afforded every opportunity, eventually pays the price for their rampant monstrosity.

When I read that Mike Flanagan was planning to turn The Fall of the House of Usher into an eight-hour mini-series for Netflix I did a major double take. I’ve read the story, and I’ve seen an astounding number of takes on it, from Roger Corman’s classic to reimaginings like The Fall of Usher and Lady Usher. But there was no possible way I could see someone getting eight hours of material out of it.
And I was right, rather than an adaptation of one story The Fall of the House of Usher is an adaptation of Poe’s works en masse with Roderick and his sister Madeline Usher reinvented as heads of a Sackler like pharmaceutical empire.
The first episode, “Upon A Midnight Dreary” opens at the funeral of...

If you’re a person with simmering rage directed at the Sackler family and Purdue Pharma for their alleged contributions to the opioid epidemic, chronicles like Hulu’s Dopesick and Netflix’s Painkiller face a major stumbling block when it comes to delivering resolution: When one side of the ledger has hundreds of thousands of deaths and the other has a few settlements and some bankruptcy filings, reality can be a real bummer. No such restrictions confine Mike Flanagan in his latest spooky-season Netflix limited series.
Half creative writing project tied to a freshman seminar on Edgar Allan Poe, half horror-filled karmic catharsis, Flanagan’s The Fall of the House of Usher is a bluntly entertaining exercise. It’s easily the most specifically topical of Flanagan’s Netflix minis, fueled by an often palpable anger. Creator Mike Flanagan’s latest and final series collaboration with Netflix, “The Fall of the House of Usher,” takes on the works of Edgar Allan Poe. Much like “The Haunting of Bly Manor,” Flanagan’s latest uses a classic short story as the central narrative framework to remix a variety of Poe’s macabre poems and short stories but with Flanagan’s signature pathos. Unlike previous Netflix series, “The Fall of the House of Usher” eschews the familiar melancholy and dials up the gallows humor for a twisted tale that’s unafraid to get grisly.
In the process, however, it’s less effective at organically adapting Poe.
Like the source story, “The Fall of the House of Usher” begins with Auguste Dupin (Carl Lumbly) called to a crumbling estate for a final meeting with the deteriorating Roderick Usher (Bruce Greenwood). With time drawing to a close and haunted by horrific...

Zahn McClarnon has justifiably garnered attention in recent years for his lead performance as Joe Leaphorn in AMC’s limited series Dark Winds. Leaphorn, a lieutenant in the Tribal Police in the Navajo Nation of Arizona, is suddenly besieged by a series of seemingly unrelated crimes within his community. As he gets closer to the truth of these cases, his own beliefs are challenged, bonds between colleagues are tested, and Joe has to dig up some painful memories from his own past.
Yet before McClarnon donned Joe’s badge and cowboy hat, he wore many other hats over his nearly 45 year career. The actor has a fairly prolific filmography as a voice over artist, he has played men on both sides of the law, and as you can imagine, as an actor of Lakota descent, has played his share of First Nations characters. Yet, when his more recent roles are carefully considered,...

Mike Flanagan, the master of soulful horror whose previous Netflix series include "The Haunting of Hill House," "The Haunting of Bly Manor," "Midnight Mass," and "The Midnight Club," is returning this year with a mix of familiar cast members and fresh faces for "The Fall of the House of Usher." Though it takes its name from the short story by Edgar Allan Poe, the series is set in the modern era and incorporates a number of other Poe tales.
Netflix has built up a solid library of original horror series, from mega-hit "Stranger Things" to lesser-recognized gems like "Marianne." Following the success of "The Haunting Hill House," Netflix inked a multi-year overall television deal with Flanagan and his longtime producing partner, Trevor Macy. The pair were poached by Amazon in December 2022, so "The Fall of the House of Usher" will be the last "Flana-verse" show to arrive on Netflix for the foreseeable future.

Netflix has slated Thursday, October 12, for the premiere of The Fall of the House of Usher, its eight-episode limited series from Mike Flanagan based on the works of Edgar Allan Poe. The streamer also released some of the first images of the series, which you can see above and below.
Starring Bruce Greenwood, who replaced Frank Langella as the lead back in April 2022 after Langella was fired following a misconduct investigation, the series is described as an epic tale of greed, horror and tragedy. Warner Bros. released Doctor Sleep into theaters several years ago, and while anticipation was high for a sequel, the latest Doctor Sleep 2 news confirms the film has been canceled. Released in 2013, Doctor Sleep was Stephen King's continuation of the story that began in The Shining, which was brought to the big screen by Stanley Kubrick in 1980. Although there are many differences between The Shining book and movie, the Doctor Sleep movie worked as both a solid adaptation of the source material and a sequel to the original film.
Doctor Sleep largely focused on a grown-up Danny Torrance (Ewan McGregor). Even though Danny has locked away most of the memories from the events of The Shining, his abilities lead to a friendship with a young girl with greater power named Abra Stone (Kyleigh Curran). Mike Flanagan teases that characters from Doctor Sleep could appear in The Dark Tower television series. Based on Stephen King's novels, The Dark Tower explores Mid-World and gunslinger Roland Deschain's pursuit of the titular structure. News of Flanagan's involvement came last year, with the project serving as his third adaptation of King's work, following Gerald's Game and Doctor Sleep. The latter received praise for its ability to expand upon the world of The Shining, along with its portrayal of Danny Torrance and the True Knot.
Flanagan has already begun developing The Dark Tower, and recently, he revealed that other characters from Stephen King's universe could make appearances. Speaking on the Script Apart podcast (via Empire), he talked about the connection in King's work and teased that there might be ways to incorporate Danny (Ewan McGregor), Abra Stone (Kyliegh Curran), Rose the Hat (Rebecca Ferguson) and more in the upcoming series.

With heartfelt horror master Mike Flanagan in charge, fans might finally get the adaptation of Stephen King's "The Dark Tower" novels that they've been wanting for decades now. In December, news broke that Flanagan now has the rights to the books -- and King's blessing -- along with plans to make a TV show version of the long-running literary property. While the project still seems to be on the distant horizon, Flanagan has since revealed to the Script Apart podcast (via Empire) that he's considering weaving in characters from another King book: "Doctor Sleep."
Flanagan directed an adaptation of King's sequel to "The Shining" in 2019, introducing viewers to a psychic cult called the True Knot and its leader, Rose The Hat (Rebecca Ferguson), along with a traumatized, grown-up Danny Torrance (Ewan McGregor). As King superfan Flanagan pointed out on Script Apart, there's plenty of precedent for overlap between "The Dark Tower...

I’ve broken down all the titles by where you can find them, whether it’s on Waxwork Records or Mondo’s sites, or via other sites like Amazon and other retailers.
One of my favorite gifts to get every holiday season is soundtrack LPs, and I suspect it’s pretty similar for a lot of other horror fans out there, so be sure to check out the entire list so that it can help you as you finish up your shopping this holiday season.
Cheers!

Disney+ has debuted a new trailer for the animated ‘Star Wars’ special ‘Lego Star Wars Summer Vacation.’
Looking for a much-needed break from stormtroopers and Tie fighters, Finn arranges a surprise vacation for his friends Rey, Poe, Rose, Chewie, Bb-8, R2-D2, and C-3Po, aboard the ultra-luxurious Galactic Starcruiser, the Halcyon. But Finn’s plan to have one last hurrah together quickly goes awry when he’s separated from the group. While searching for his friends, he encounters three Force ghosts: Obi-Wan Kenobi, Anakin Skywalker, and Leia Organa, who each share their own unexpected stories of vacations gone wrong, helping him to understand that holidays are about more than just having fun.
The movie features the voices of “Weird Al” Yankovic as Vic Vanko; Yvette Nicole Brown as Colvett Valeria; Thomas Lennon as Wick Cooper; Paul F. Tompkins as Rad; Dee Bradley Baker as Boba Fett; Ashly Burch as...
