Updated: California Gov. Gavin Newsom, one of the spin room surrogates for Kamala Harris, told reporters that the debate will be an opportunity to “take the best of the Biden record, but also make the case that she’s not Joe Biden, and she sure as hell ain’t Donald Trump.”
“She is a new generation, a leader, and that’s her opportunity,” he said.
Newsom was a surrogate for Biden as well, and appeared at the spin room in June, a disastrous night for the president.
Newsom also said that Harris has to communicate “a vision where people feel heard and included.”
People have to “feel that she’s talking about them, and Donald Trump, in contrast, we know will be talking about himself.”
The governor said that he was not nervous about the debate, but said that if Trump “feels he’s losing, this will be very interesting,...

After members of Donald Trump’s campaign were allegedly involved in a physical altercation with staff at Arlington National Cemetery, veterans are stepping forward to condemn the former president’s use of the hallowed burial ground as a campaign backdrop.
On Tuesday, Trump attended an event at the cemetery honoring servicemembers who were killed in the 2021 withdrawal from Afghanistan. NPR reported later that afternoon that during the visit staffers attempted to stop members of Trump’s campaign entourage from taking photographs and videos in Section 60, a section of the cemetery...

Anthony Hopkins’ latest indie film “Eyes in the Trees” has found itself at the center of a FBI complaint.
Producer Daemon Hillin first told Deadline that he is being extorted over 18 minutes of unedited footage from the feature that was allegedly obtained through hacking. The footage includes all of Hopkins’ scenes that were filmed in Los Angeles in 2023; the movie received a SAG-AFTRA interim agreement waiver to remain in production. Hillin said a “Korean Zombie address” has sent him “disturbing and very detailed emails.”
The emails, obtained by IndieWire, demand $200,000 in cryptocurrency. Hillin says he’s not paying.
One email reads, in part: “We will also send clips of your project to potential major buyers in the market . we will email bomb them through filters with your content i.e. Netflix, Amazon, peacock, sony, AMC, Lionsgate, Blumhouse. We have emails to all the strategic people in charge of content acquisitions in those companies.

Democrats weren’t able to cohere around plan regarding the future of President Joe Biden’s campaign after a closed-door meeting of their House caucus on Tuesday, the first such gathering since the president’s disastrous performance on the debate stage against former President Donald Trump.
Representatives leaving the meeting were hesitant to give details about what was said in the no-cell phones, members-only discussion, but the message was still clear: Dems are divided, and there’s no consensus on the path forward.

Scarlett Johansson called out OpenAI this week for mimicking her voice for a new chatbot, underscoring the urgency that many artists feel about regulating artificial intelligence.
But in Congress, taking on AI is starting to resemble wrestling an octopus. It’s so sprawling, it’s hard to know how to begin.
The Senate AI Working Group issued a “roadmap” last week. But that left it vague where Congress is going or when it will get there.
Some have warned against stifling innovation. And while some regulation is likely to happen eventually, it appears it will be done piecemeal — one tentacle at a time.
“From the House perspective, part of the challenge is that we’re under Republican control,” Democratic Rep. Ted Lieu of California, co-chair of the House task force on AI, tells Variety. “It’s been very chaotic. We’re just trying to stop stupid stuff.”

Updated, with complete remarks: President Joe Biden told the crowd at a fundraiser this evening, “You’re the reason that Donald Trump is a former president, or he hates when I say it, a defeated president.”
At the Holmby Hills home of designer Michael Smith and former ambassador James Costos, Biden rallied his donors, many of whom backed him in the last campaign, while turning his focus on his likely 2024 rival. He spent a substantial part of his remarks warning of Trump as a threat to democracy, a contrast that many of the president’s steadfast backers believe will boost support as the 2024 campaign gets in full swing.
“Literally, I believe, the future of democracy is at stake,” Biden said, according to a pool report. “The greatest threat Trump poses is to our democracy, because if we lost that, we lose everything.” Read his complete remarks at the end of the story.

When Chuck Lorre and his Chuck Lorre Family Foundation gifted the Venice Family Clinic a $7 million donation in early 2022 for its modernization update at 604 Rose Ave., the super producer said when renovations were complete, the clinic would continue to be “an oasis of hope for generations to come.”
The results of the makeover were unveiled Aug. 26 during an official ribbon-cutting event attended by Lorre and the Venice Family Clinic team, and because of his support of the clinic — Lorre has donated more than $20 million over a 20-year span — the Rose Avenue flagship has been renamed the Chuck Lorre Rose Avenue Health and Wellness Center.
“I’ve been involved with the Venice Family Clinic for 25 years, and this was the crowning moment. The newly refurbished facility on Rose Avenue will be an oasis for both patients and staff for many years to come. I’m deeply grateful to have played a part in making that happen,...

Republicans hauled FBI Director Christopher Wray in front of the House Judiciary Committee on Tuesday as part of their effort to tear down federal law enforcement for investigating Donald Trump. San Francisco, April 29 (Ians) A group of US lawmakers have proposed a bill to stop artificial intelligence (AI)-driven autonomous systems from single-handedly launching nuclear weapons, as fears arise on the potential threat of AI taking a decision on its own.
Senator Edward Markey (D-ma) and Representatives Ted Lieu (D-ca), Don Beyer (D-va), and Ken Buck (R-Co) have introduced the ‘Block Nuclear Launch by Autonomous AI Act’ in the US, reports The Verge.
The bill would “prohibit the use of Federal funds to launch a nuclear weapon using an autonomous weapons system that is not subject to meaningful human control”.
“In all cases, the US will maintain a human ain the loop’ for all actions critical to informing and executing decisions by the President to initiate and terminate nuclear weapon employment,” read the bill.

Update: Joe Biden spoke for about a half an hour to about 100 guests at a fundraiser in Brentwood on Thursday, covering a range of topics including the state of the fractured media.
“There are no editors anymore,” Biden said, per a pool report. “The ability of newspapers to have much impact is de minimis.”
As he did last week at a fundraiser in New York at the home of James Murdoch, Biden also cited Russian President Vladimir Putin’s threat to use tactical nuclear weapons. He also called Pakistan one of the most dangerous countries in the world as it had “nuclear weapons without any cohesion.”
He predicted that the work of the January 6th Committee would result “in some real change” as a consequence of their work.
Biden also participated in a photo line earlier in the evening for those writing higher-dollar checks.

President Joe Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris jointly endorsed Rep. Karen Bass in her run for Los Angeles mayor today.
“We are endorsing Karen Bass for Los Angeles mayor because we are eager to continue to partner with her on innovative strategies to reduce homelessness and increase public safety and prosperity,” Biden and Harris said in a joint statement released by the Bass campaign. “Karen Bass has our friendship, and she has earned our respect through her leadership in Congress on crime prevention strategies, effective and fair policing, and the welfare of children and families.”
Bass, a Democrat, has been the U.S. representative for California’s 37th congressional district since 2011. The district, covers several areas south and west of downtown Los Angeles. She finished first in the June primary race for mayor and will square off in November against billionaire businessman Rick Caruso, who is also a registered Democrat.

Democrats in Congress are taking aim at the pending $43 billion merger of WarnerMedia and Discovery, pushing the Justice Department to scrutinize the transaction on antitrust grounds.
In a letter sent Monday to Attorney General Merrick Garland and Justice Department antitrust chief Jonathan Kanter, the legislators assert that too much consolidation in media will hurt competition in Hollywood’s labor market and result in less diversity overall in content.
“This transaction raises significant antitrust concerns. In particular, the merger threatens to enhance the market power of the combined firm and substantially lessen competition in the media and entertainment industry, harming both consumers and American workers,” the letter states. “In light of these concerns, we respectfully urge the Department to conduct a thorough review of this transaction to ensure that it does not harm American consumers and workers by illegally harming competition.”

Law professor Alan Dershowitz was dragged online after saying Wednesday that former president Donald Trump’s lawsuit against Google, Facebook and Twitter is an “important First Amendment case.”
“This is the most important First Amendment case of the 21st Century,” the lawyer declared on Fox News’ “Hannity.”
He went on, “It’s important because it pits freedom of speech on the one hand against the First Amendment on the other hand. That may sound paradoxical, but remember, it’s the high-tech giants that are banning freedom of speech. They are censoring but they’re claiming the right to do so under the First Amendment so they’re using the First Amendment as a sword against freedom of speech. Update, 8 Pm Pt: Caitlyn Jenner’s choice of Sean Hannity to make her national debut as a gubernatorial candidate was a bit incongruous to the state itself.
After all, California is bluer than it was than in 2003, the year of the last recall, when that year’s best known celebrity candidate, Arnold Schwarzenegger, announced on The Tonight Show with Jay Leno — great for publicity, benign in its partisanship. But in doing Hannity, Jenner signaled that she wanted to reach his rightward, pro-Donald Trump audience, perhaps to shore up support against Republican rivals. Yet she also risks playing right into Gov. Gavin Newsom’s strategy, which has been to brand the recall as a product of the pro-Donald Trump far right. Earlier in the day, Jenner had unveiled a list of middle-of-the-road policy solutions on her website, including taxes, regulation and Covid-19 closures, steering clear of some of the cultural...

Updated with latest: San Francisco District Attorney Chesa Boudin announced charges on Monday against a man accused of murdering a child in his care. The case gained national attention over the weekend when the San Francisco Chronicle posted a story on the case and California gubernatorial candidate Caitlyn Jenner blamed current Governor Gavin Newsom. Jenner Tweeted: “Gavin’s District Attorneys across California are releasing dangerous criminals back on to our streets.” More on that in our previous post below.
Monday afternoon, San Francisco District Attorney Chesa Boudin issued the following statement on the case:
A recent opinion column in the San Francisco Chronicle has caused confusion about the District Attorney’s Office’s policy in charging domestic violence. To be clear, the Office charges cases even when a complaining witness does not cooperate, so long as the case can be proven otherwise.
“The death of Baby S is a tragedy.

On Thursday, CAA kicked off the month of April with the CAA Amplify Town Hall to address the surge of violence against Asians and Asian Americans. These acts of violence and harassment have been at the forefront in the past week with the Atlanta shootings and the most most recent attack in New York City, where a man brutally beat 65-year-old Vilma Kari while saying racist remarks. The graphic attack can be seen in video footage — but what’s even worse is that the footage shows people witnessing the attack and not doing anything to help her.
The CAA Amplify Town Hall presented an opportunity for the Asian community in Hollywood and allies to speak about their experiences; to voice their concerns, and to offer some semblance of hope that could help bolster action. More importantly, it offered a platform for a community that has been silent for years to speak out.

During a House Judiciary Committee meeting on the rise of violence and discrimination against Asian Americans during the pandemic, Democratic Rep. Grace Meng strongly denounced Texas’ Republican Rep. Chip Roy’s earlier remarks where he spoke glowingly of his state’s history of “lynchings” and whined about political correctness getting in the way of using racist language.

Eight people — including six women of Asian descent — were killed in a string of shootings at three Atlanta-area massage parlors that appeared to target the Asian-American community.
The first shooting took place at 5 p.m. Tuesday at Young’s Asian Massage in the Atlanta suburb of Acworth; four people were killed — two Asian women as well as a white man and woman — and one Hispanic male was injured.
Roughly 45 minutes later, police were called to the Gold Spa in Atlanta — 30 miles from the previous shooting — where they discovered three more women shot and killed.

Republican Senator Ron Johnson, a staunch Trump sycophant, let his racist flag fly high when he said that he was unafraid of the insurrectionists on January 6 because they were not members of Black Lives Matter or antifa.
Johnson made the remarks during a Thursday interview on conservative radio host Joe Pag’s show where he addressed previous untrue assertions about the attack on the Capital not being an armed insurrection.

It was Valentine’s Day of 2018 in Washington, D.C., and Mary Wilson was on a mission. Then 74 years old, the Supremes singer, outfitted in a glamorous red dress and very high heels, needed to convince the nation’s representatives and senators to vote yes on the Classics Act, a proposed piece of legislation to support legacy artists. She wouldn’t take no for an answer.

We’ve gone for just over two weeks now without hearing much of anything from Donald Trump: Banned from Twitter, absent from Fox & Friends call ins, the former president has been unusually low key at his Mar-a-Lago estate in Florida.
That will change on Tuesday, when he will once again be at the center of the media spotlight, even if he’s not a presence live and in person.
For only the fourth time in American history, the Senate will start an impeachment trial of a president — and it will be a first for a former commander in chief.
Broadcast networks are planning special reports, while cable and streaming services networks will provide complete feeds of the proceedings.
It was just over a year ago that Trump was acquitted in the Senate for his first impeachment, and there is every expectation that will be the same verdict again.

AMC’s wild week continued on Thursday morning, with the nation’s largest cinema chain dropping 61% an hour into trading. The drop comes after AMC’s share price rocketed higher a day earlier, moving from about $5 per share to nearly $20, and also after Robinhood and Td Ameritrade, the popular trading platforms, restricted users’ ability to trade the company and GameStop, another company that’s seen its share price zoom higher in the last week, on Thursday.
The Thursday morning decline for AMC pushed shares from $19.90 at the end of Wednesday trading to $7.74 per share soon after the market opened on Thursday. AMC’s rebound was likely curbed by Robinood’s and Td Ameritrade’s decisions on Thursday to block users from buying new shares of AMC, GameStop and other companies that have been pushed higher thanks in large part to the Wall Street Bets forum on Reddit, which has been...

Following the unprecedented rioting by supporters of Donald Trump in the U.S. Capitol, a growing number of people, both Democrats and Republicans, are calling for the president to be removed from office.
According to White House correspondent April D. Ryan, the push is happening even at the leadership level, as she reported that “Congressional leaders are in the undisclosed location and focusing on the 25th Amendment to get @realDonaldTrump out of office!”
And Washington Post reporter Dave Weigel reported that Massachusetts Democrat Katherine Clark, assistant Speaker of the House and the fourth-ranking congressional Democrat, called Trump “a traitor to our country and our Constitution” who “must be removed from office and prevented from further endangering our country and our people.”

Two members of the House, Reps. Ted Lieu (D-Calif.) and Kathleen Rice (D-n.Y.), have requested the FBI open a criminal investigation into the president following his call with Georgia’s secretary of state. In the call, Trump attempted to get Secretary of State Brad Raffensperger to “find 11,780 votes” in order to reverse his electoral defeat there.
“As Members of Congress and former prosecutors, we believe Donald Trump engaged in solicitation of, or conspiracy to commit, a number of election crimes,” the representatives wrote to FBI Director Christopher Wray on Monday.

Of course, the Trump administration has been trying since March to popularize the term “Chinese virus,” which critics say is racist and may have inspired racist attacks on Asian-Americans. But in Maher’s view, the term is useful for understanding where the infection originated and not only that, he argued that China bears some responsibility for its spread.

Barring any late-breaking impeachment developments, House Judiciary Chairman Jerry Nadler will join musicians at a rally for a fair film and TV contract outside NBCUniversal’s headquarters in New York City on Monday. A similar rally will be held the same day at the offices of management’s AMPTP in Sherman Oaks.
The American Federation of Musicians and the Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers, which will resume negotiations for a new agreement on Monday, haven’t met at the bargaining table since March.
The main issue is residuals from films and TV shows made for streaming services. Unlike actors, writers and directors, musicians don’t get them, though they do receive residual payments for secondary-market re-uses of theatrical and TV films.
