For artist Jay Stellar, pursuing music as a career choice is not an easy thing. But neither should it be easy, as then, everybody would just be doing the same. “It comes with a lot of sacrifice and there is literally no going back.” Catching up with the artist just in between his promotions for his new song Pacha Parishkari, Jayasoorya Sj or Jay Stellar proved to be a picture of resilience.
Pacha Parishkari, now available on all major platforms, is his newest collaboration with rapper ThirumaLi. The global craze for Latin music continues with this fresh release. Inspired by baile funk, a subgenre of reggaeton, the song fuses Latin rhythms with the artist’s Malayali heritage. The theme decided on was that of a superficial fashion star, in other words, a pacha parishkari. In his own words, “We wanted to denote a generation and a time period where music...

The entire story of Guruvayoor Ambalanadayil revolves around a running joke; it’s a secret that binds every character in the movie, especially the two leads – Anandan (Prithviraj Sukumaran) and Vinu (Basil Joseph). Apparently, it’s the same gag that feels like the only weak link in the script. But despite this hiccup, this insanely entertaining wannabe comic camp makes a passable comedy, thanks to Basil Joseph and Prithviraj Sukumaran. Directed by Vipin Das, whose 2022 smash hit, Jaya Jaya Jaya Jaya Hey, elevated comedy set pieces to a new level, Guruvayoor Ambalanadayil talks about a feud. At the heart of this story are two soon-to-be brothers-in-law, Anandan, and Vinu.
Vinu has everything a middle-class eligible bachelor Malayali requires – he works as a corporate executive in the Middle East, his family is well-off, and he is the perfect man next door. Now, the only thing he lacks in his late 20s...

Beginning with a musical rom-com driving audiences to theatres, Malayalam Cinema produced several wonders this year, ending the stellar run with a dark comedy entertainer and a woman fighting back against domestic violence in style.

2022 for Indian cinema has been about big spectacles and mass fights, but Malayalam cinema stands out with its content-oriented and celebrated films. And Vineeth Sreenivasan thinks not every film should be like Baahubali to be celebrated. “I’ve heard people from other industries say that only films like Baahubali will succeed from now on. ListicleOf the many interesting women characters of south Indian cinema who graced our screens this year, here are our favourites.Sowmya RajendranThe year 2022 was when cinema bounced back to some semblance of what it used to be before the pandemic struck the world. There were many blockbusters from the south Indian film industries, and quite a few of them had interesting women characters as well. This was a welcome change in a male-dominated field, where most films are hero-centric and mass entertainers have seldom had memorable women characters. Quite a few small budget films this year too had impressive women characters, who broke onscreen conventions and surprised us. Here are our favourite women characters from southern cinema this year: Gargi from Gargi (Tamil) Gautham Ramachandran’s hard-hitting courtroom drama is about a young woman whose father is accused of sexually assaulting a minor. Gargi (Sai Pallavi) is convinced of his...

AnalysisMainstream cinema’s rising interest in telling stories of domestic violence, and the acclaim many of these films have enjoyed, show that the audience too has evolved over the years to embrace different kinds of narratives.Sowmya RajendranUntil a few years ago, films centred on women characters were described as 'women-centric' cinema. At the time, this often meant that the film was for a niche audience, dealing with issues that would only be of interest to women. But now, with the emergence of stars such as Vidya Balan, Deepika Padukone, Alia Bhatt, Manju Warrier, Nayanthara, Anushka Shetty, Samantha, Trisha, and Taapsee among others — all actors who have single-handedly shouldered films across genres — the term 'women-centric' cinema is becoming obsolete. The mushrooming of digital streaming platforms, which have brought out several originals with women in the lead, has also been a considerable influence. A film told from a woman’s point...

ReviewThrough some wonderful performances, ‘Jaya Jaya Jaya Jaya Hey’, written by three men, takes a stand against domestic abuse, but at the cost of losing the thread on the reality of a woman's life.CrisThe Darshana-Basil shoulder dance bit from Jaya Jaya Jaya Jaya Hey that went viral before the movie came out is not included in the movie. But those few seconds – Basil dancing, moving his shoulders up and down and forcing an annoyed looking Darshana to do the same – capture the entire mood of the film very well. Jaya Jaya Jaya Jaya Hey, written and directed by Vipin Das, focuses the lens on the life of Jaya, a girl growing up in a very typical lower middle class family, and effortlessly shows the amount of unfairness in a woman’s life that’s taken for granted. The casting is absolutely apt, you know when you see a...

In the beginning, when she made shorter appearances in Malayalam movies, you would take her for a supportive friend who hears you out, keeps you company in dark moments, and lets you lie down on her lap and sings to you. When she appeared in grander roles, you saw her as a tragic character that dies of a virus, a young woman trapped in sex trafficking, a lover ending up deserted in a haunted house or the depths of a forest. ReviewThere are some marvellous performances from the actors, Saiju Kurup, Priyanka Nair and Kottayam Ramesh in particular.CrisThis much was clear from the trailer: Antakshari will be a thriller, will be scary, and will have some fun elements because there is a policeman in it who likes to play Antakshari all the time. Antakshari is a game of music where a player sings a song and the next player has to sing one that begins with the last letter of the first song. The fun is however short-lived, and horror takes over, as the game itself becomes a scary experience, and many parallel stories seem to be told. But what began really well appears to lose focus, leaving too many loose ends, despite some marvellous performances from the actors: Saiju Kurup, Priyanka Nair and Kottayam Ramesh in particular. Director Vipin Das sets the tone of the film in the very beginning.
