Malaikottai Vaaliban is an upcoming Malayalam movie that promises to be a mass entertainer with a lot of action, drama, and comedy. The film is directed by Lijo Jose Pellissery, who is known for his unconventional and experimental films like Angamaly Diaries, Ee.Ma.Yau, Jallikattu, and Churuli. The film stars Mohanlal, one of the most versatile and popular actors in Indian cinema, who has won several national and state awards for his performances.
In a recent interview, Vijay Babu, the producer and co-star of the film, revealed some interesting details about the film and what the audience can expect from it. Acclaimed filmmaker Mahesh Narayanan and popular actor-producer Kunchacko Boban are re-teaming for “Ariyippu” (“Declaration”), the first Indian film in Locarno’s international competition in 17 years.
The Malayalam-language film follows Hareesh (Boban) and Reshmi (Divya Prabha), an immigrant couple from Kerala working in a medical gloves factory near Delhi, who aspire to go abroad for a better life. During the Covid-19 lockdowns, when an old video resurfaces among the factory workers, it opens up a Pandora’s box that threatens the couple’s jobs and marriage.
Narayanan got the germ of the film’s idea from a newspaper article about a female bank employee who had approached the Mumbai high court demanding a “declaration” clarifying that a video which had been circulated in her bank was a look alike and not her. That idea travelled with Narayanan for a while until he hit upon the premise about a migrant couple working in a gloves factory.

Last week we got our first look at Tinu Pappachan's upcoming holiday release, Ajagajantharam. With the cinema opening less than two weeks away, the team has dropped a second, even more exciting promo on us, teasing a "festival of chaos" in Kerala! Pappachan comes from the indie film orbit of Jallikattu's Lijo Jose Pellissery, and both use a lot of the same actors and technicians, so a passing resemblance is inevitable, but Pappachan seems focused on taking his mentor's trademark chaotic mania as a jumping off point toward even higher realms of action madness. Ajagajantharam features Antony "Pepe" Vaghese in the lead and a number of high profile performers in supporting roles including writer/actor Chemban Vinod Jose, Arjun Ashokan (Nayattu), Sabumon...

Blasting out of India's current cinema hotspot of Kerala, Tinu Pappachan's Ajagajantharam is ready to knock the action movie world on its ass. A student and collaborator of Jallikattu director, Lijo Jose Pellissary, Pappachan has worked for years as an associate director on Ljp's films. In 2018 he stepped out on his own with a prison break film called Swathanthryam Ardharithriyil (Freedom at Midnight), a distinctly action-centered take on The Shawshank Redemption, which I absolutely adored. Now he's finally returning to the director's chair with his sophmore project, Ajagajantharam. The latest film, which doesn't really have an English translation (I looked), is the story of a festival interrupted by feuding factions bent on destroying one another. It looks abslutely insane in the best possible way....

Lijo Jose Pellissery seems to have created a school of cinema in Malayalam cinema, and who better to continue his legacy than his former assistant, Tinu Pappachan, who presented his debut with “Freedom at Midnight”, a movie his mentor co-produced alongside Chemban Vinod Jose.
The story follows the same labyrinth paths movies “Jallikattu” does, but the main premise revolves around Jacob, a manager at a big financial firm, who finds himself behind bars when he tries to save the woman he loves from the clutches of a corrupt police force. His efforts, however, end up with him in jail and Betty beaten up and in a hospital. While in prison, the whole truth about his situation is revealed, while he desperately tries to survive the guard’s brutality and the inmates who want him dead, in order to survive and save Betty.

Whatever is in the water in Kerala these days, I've gotta get some for myself. India's newest hot spot for thrilling filmmakers is churning out new and exciting films all the time, and the latest thriller to hit cinema screens in Tinu Pappachan's Swathanthryam Ardharathriyil (Freedom at Midnight). Pappachan, making his first feature after working as an assistant on the films of Malayalam cinema's current critical champion Lijo Jose Pellissery, is a force to reckon with. The film feels like the work of a hungry contender looking to make his mark, and with a crackling script by Dileep Kurian to work from, it definitely succeeds in making an impression as an incredibly solid thriller punctuated with brilliant action and storytelling. Jacob (Antony Varghese) is on...

MollywoodThis jailbreak film never gets monotonous. Sowmya RajendranAntony Varghese, with his shaggy mane and smouldering eyes, looks like a messiah descended on earth to lead those who believe in him to the light. So, it’s apt that he plays the lead in Swathanthyram Ardarathriyil, a jailbreak film where he’s an accused in a murder case. Set mostly within the confines of a prison, and narrower still within the setting of Cell No. 6, Tinu Pappachan’s slow burn thriller never gets monotonous. The characters cannot speak much. They’re under the (mostly) watchful eyes of the cops. Their plans have to be made in whispers, gestures, expressions and even newspaper cuttings. The need for secrecy is a constant and the actors – all of them – succeed in drawing the audience to that edgy reality. As a story, Swathanthyram does not have much depth. It is not, for instance, like Thondimuthalum Driksakshiyum, where there are so many layers to every character, including the cops. Jacob (Antony Varghese) is single-minded in his purpose and the storytelling is devoid of distractions. As he makes his moves on a chessboard he does not have full control over, the upsets and triumphs are what make up the plot. Can he pull it off? Till the last moment, we don’t know the answer. And when the realisation dawns upon us at the end of a superbly shot sequence, the audacity of it takes our breath away. Vinayakan (who was received with cheers usually reserved for a hero by the audience) and Chemban Vinod Jose, who play Jacob’s co-conspirators, are in their elements, shifting between black comedy and sheer desperation. Girish Gangadharan’s cinematography deserves special mention – there’s so much detailing in the frames that needs to be communicated to the audience without the use of dialogues. In many films, for instance, you can close your eyes for a good part and still understand most of the story. Do that in Swathanthyram and you won’t understand head or tail of it. Like that scene in which Jacob wordlessly pours a mug of water over the Bengali migrant, as if performing abhishekam to a god. It is unexpectedly poignant and speaks so much without needing anyone to open their mouths. The stunt sequences are choreographed well, too. These are not present to merely showcase the hero’s machismo. Each of it takes the film further towards the conclusion. The background score ably builds up the suspense in the film without trying to manipulate us into judgments about what we’re watching. I did feel, though, that the film went a bit overboard with the rain and slow motion, even within the stylised framework. And I wish the writing had been better in the flashback portions. The whole thing looked hurried and is not as impactful as the rest of the film somehow. Aswathy Manohar doesn’t have much to do in the film. None of the women characters do. That’s understandable, considering where the film is set for the most part. However, the actor makes an impression despite her short screen time. Seeing Lijo Jose Pelissery, who directed Antony Varghese in Angamaly Diaries (in one scene, someone hums the enjoyable Chayakadakara song from the film when the prison inmates are being served tea), along with the actor on screen puts a smile on your face. Swathanthyram Ardarathriyil is yet another memorable film for Antony Varghese. If the actor continues making such intelligent choices, he will go far indeed.
