Just a day after New York Film Festival and Toronto International Film Festival made major announcements, Venice Film Festival is here with their full lineup ahead of the festival taking place August 28 through September 7.

Highlights include Pedro Almodóvar’s The Room Next Door, Luca Guadagnino’s Queer, Brady Corbet’s The Brutalist, Kiyoshi Kurosawa’s Cloud, Alex Ross Perry’s Pavements, Harmony Korine’s Baby Invasion, Pablo Larraín’s Maria, Takeshi Kitano’s Broken Rage, Errol Morris’ Separated, Lav Diaz’s Phantosmia, Thomas Vinterberg’s Families Like Ours, Dea Kulumbegashvili’s April, and more.

Egypt’s El Gouna Film Festival, running October 23 to 31 in the Red Sea resort of El Gouna, has unveiled the winners of the fourth edition of its CineGouna SpringBoard platform aimed at supporting projects and talents from the Arab world.

Running October 25 to 29, the meeting featured 12 projects in development - nine of them narrative features and three of them documentaries – and six works in post-production, chosen from 99 submissions.

Alpine festival running Dec 14-21 reveals details of all industry events.

Jonas Alexander Arnby, Ágnes Kocsis and Poland’s Agnieszka Smoczyńska will be among the directors presenting new projects at Les Arc Film Festival’s Co-production Village, running Dec 15 to 17.

Hungarian filmmaker Kocsis will attend with romantic drama Iron Song, about the real-life love story between Latvian composer Imants Kalniņš and Us writer Kelly Cherry in the 1960s.

Polish director Agnieszka Smoczyńska will present her first English-language project Silent Twins, about siblings who communicate using a private language of their own creation after spending 14 years in Broadmoor high-security psychiatric hospital.

Eleven films focused on Lebanon, screened over the past week at the Ji.hlava Intl. Documentary Film Festival, conveyed a rich caravan of images and ideas from the war-torn country – many of which presented in-depth looks at life seemingly having nothing to do with bombshells.

The full range of life, art and social discourse was indeed the goal of the section titled Lebanon: Between Ashes and Roses, according to Ji.hlava’s Rene Kubasek.

He explains the section, a first for the fest, grew organically from the body of work Ji.hlava organizers noticed was on the rise last year.

“At our 2017 edition we ended up having five Lebanon-produced films in our competition sections,” Kubasek says, “and we realized that Lebanon has lately been producing a few of the most interesting additions to contemporary world cinema.”
