Facing mortality, Sid (Sex Education‘s Somner) wants to create a legacy and be remembered forever. With his obsession for astronomy and the atmosphere, he comes up with a plan. He gives each boy a category — love, home, friends, family and location — and asks them to find an item that connects them all with the word they’ve been given. Together, they’ll burn the items on a gigantic fire, making the particles and his memory a part of the atmosphere forever.

Exclusive: The BBC has acquired broadcast rights to the British indie drama Kindling from debut feature filmmaker Connor O’Hara, which played in Competition at the 2023 Shanghai International Film Festival.

Written and directed by O’Hara, the pic was the first British film to screen at Shanghai in six years. The BBC’s license on the pic begins in November and lasts three years. Signature Entertainment released the film in the UK and Ireland and brokered the deal with the BBC. However, first contact was made with the broadcaster by Jamie Gamache, who produced the pic alongside Mark Foligno and first approached BBC buyer Simon Chilcott with the project.

“It’s sometimes quite clear what the BBC is after, and Kindling definitely felt like it,” Gamache told Deadline.

The BFI London Film Festival’s annual Works-in-Progress showcase, now in its third edition, will present nine new feature films and documentaries by U.K.-based filmmakers.

The showcase, which is part of the festival’s U.K. Talent Days focus, will be an in-person event on Oct. 8 screening extracts from each project introduced by their producer to an invited audience of international buyers and festival programmers. The projects are either in production or post-production. Clips will also be available online via a secure platform to a wider pool of invited international industry professionals.

The annual Buyers & Sellers event returns as an in-person fixture at which international sales agents can meet with U.K. buyers, and Network@Lff will host masterclasses and events for 12 U.K.-based writers, directors and producers to interact with international filmmakers and industry executives at the festival.

The show from Marcella producer Buccaneer Media, which is adapted from a C.J. Tudor novel, has entered production and follows a village haunted by a dark and turbulent history.

Morton will play Reverend Jack Brooks, a single parent haunted by a tragedy from her previous church and who bears the onus of her husband’s death. Stokes is her daughter Flo, a teenager who marches to the beat of her own drum. Both arrive in Chapel Croft in the hope of a fresh start, however, they soon find the village rife with conspiracies and secrets.

The thriller was one of Paramount+’s first UK commissions and the streamer has since ordered The Doll Factory, also from Buccaneer, an adaptation of Elizabeth Macneal’s Sunday Times bestselling novel.

UK-based Carnaby Sales and Distribution has acquired international rights to Connor O’Hara’s debut feature Kindling, which it will debut at Cannes next week.

Kindling is produced by Mark Foligno, who was an executive producer on The King’s Speech, and Jamie Gamache; for UK companies Haymarket Films, Lowkey Films and Hyprr Films.

The UK film tells the story of a young man with testicular cancer who decides to turn his final summer into a celebration of life, love and friendship. The film is based on O’Hara’s proof-of-concept short Infinite starring George MacKay.

UK crime drama The Missing ran for two seasons in 2014 and 2016 on BBC One, where it was a hit by anybody’s standards. The logical next step would have been a third and possibly fourth, fifth and sixth season, but none arrived. Instead, the show’s creators Harry and Jack Williams changed direction and created two seasons of a spin-off starring The Missing’s lead detective Julien Baptiste. With the British thriller now finding new fans internationally on Netflix, many are asking why season three of The Missing was never made.

Zelda had the baby, and by the time Tommy returned from war, he was unwittingly the father of a four-year-old son with hazel eyes.

At a panel talk at the BFI London Film Festival in October, screenwriter Steven Knight revealed that the upcoming series is due for an "early 2022" release, later confirmed by new cast member Conrad Khan in an interview with "Radio Times." Khan said that the show "comes out, from what I last heard - I mean, these things change so quickly - I think that will come out next February, the beginning of next year." Since then, BBC has confirmed that the new release date will be Feb. 27, a mere week and a half away.

Since Peaky Blinders broke through on Netflix in the US, its creators have dropped hints about the Hollywood superstars lobbying for roles in the Birmingham-based gangster drama. London, March 10: Indian actor Adarsh Gourav has been nominated in the Leading Actor category for his role in The White Tiger at the BAFTA Awards 2021. The British Academy of Film and Television Arts announced its list of nominees for the year on Tuesday, which includes a record breaking number of female directors.

This year also sees the most diverse set of nominations. Notable nominees include ones in the Leading Actress category for Radha Blank for The Forty-Year-Old Version, Maria Bakalova for Borat Subsequent Film and Dominique Fishback for Judas And The Black Messiah.

In the Leading Actor, Adarsh Gourav will compete with late actor Chadwick Boseman for Ma Rainey's Black Bottom and Anthony Hopkins for The Father.

Today, the London Critics Circle announced the nominations for the 41st annual London Critics’ Circle Film Awards which saw Rose Glass’ dramatic horror, ‘Saint Maud’, out in front with 8 nominations.

Other leading contenders include Sarah Gavron’s London coming-of-age story ‘Rocks’ with 6 nominations, Chloé Zhao’s improvised American road movie ‘Nomadland’ with 5, and Emerald Fennell’s provocative blackly comical thriller ‘Promising Young Woman’ with 4. Also earning 4 nominations were David Fincher’s Hollywood biopic ‘Mank’ and Steve McQueen’s house-party drama ‘Lovers Rock’. McQueen is up for Director of the Year for his five Small Axe films.

The late Chadwick Boseman received nominations both for his lead role in ‘Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom’ and his supporting role in ‘Da 5 Blood’s. Other multiple acting nominees include Morfydd Clark, Anthony Hopkins, Carey Mulligan, Riz Ahmed, Vanessa Kirby, Sacha Baron Cohen and ‘Rocks‘ newcomer Bukky Bakray.

Films by women writer-directors including Rose Glass, Sarah Gavron, Chloé Zhao and Emerald Fennell scored the most nominations for the 41st London Critics’ Circle Film Awards, which were announced on Tuesday.

Glass’s horror film “Saint Maud” earned eight nominations, including film, director, screenwriter, actress (Morfydd Clark), supporting actress (Jennifer Ehle) and British/Irish film of the year, while Clark is also nominated for British/Irish actress.

Sarah Gavron’s coming-of-age tale “Rocks” scored six nominations, Chloé Zhao’s road movie “Nomadland” five, and Emerald Fennell’s black comedy “Promising Young Woman” four. David Fincher’s biopic “Mank” and Steve McQueen’s house-party film “Lovers Rock” also had four nominations each.

This morning British actors Holliday Grainger and Micheal Ward announced the list of nominations for the 2020 British Independent Film Awards (BIFAs) which sees Rose Glass’s psychological horror lead the pack with 17 nominations.

‘Saint Maud’ will be taking on Remi Weekes’ ‘His House’, which has 16 nominations across the Director, Screenplay, debut and technical categories. Weekes’ powerful debut also received nominations in Best Actress and Best Actor for Wunmi Mosaku and Ṣọpẹ́ Dìrísù.

‘Rocks’, Sarah Gavron and Anu Henrique’s fresh, poignant and genuinely uplifting take on life as a marginalised British teen has 15 nominations, including double nominations for stars Bukky Bakray and Kosar Ali in Best Actress and Supporting Actress and Most Promising Newcomer. “Saint Maud” is up for best British independent film, screenplay and director, and also features in the debut categories — producer, director and screenwriter. Morfydd Clark is nominated for best actress and Jennifer Ehle for supporting actress. The film also features heavily in the technical categories.

Close behind is Remi Weekes’ “His House,” which contrasts asylum seekers’ real life horrors with those of the supernatural kind. It has 16 nominations across the director, screenplay, debut and technical categories, and acting nominations for Wunmi Mosaku and Ṣọpẹ́ Dìrísù.

The 2020 British Independent Film Awards nominations were revealed Wednesday morning by British actors Holliday Grainger (“The Borgias”) and Micheal Ward (“Lovers Rock”). Leading the list of nominees this year is Rose Glass’ horror movie “Saint Maud” with an impressive 17 nominations. A24 has U.S. distribution rights, but canceled a spring 2020 release due to the pandemic. While the film managed to open in the UK, it has yet to grace stateside screens outside of film festivals.

Another horror movie, Remi Weekes’ refugee nightmare story “His House,” trails close behind with 16 nominations. That film is available to stream on Netflix. With 15 nominations is Sarah Gavron’s teen tale “Rocks.” “Calm with Horses,” titled in the U.S. as “The Shadow of Violence,” has 10 nominations, while “Mogul Mowgli” starring Riz Ahmed has seven. Florian Zeller’s Oscar hopeful “The Father,” with Anthony Hopkins, also is ahead of the pack with six nominations.

Rose Glass’ horror Saint Maud has set a new record for most nominations for one film at the British Independent Film Awards (BIFAs), with 17 nods.

The nominations were announced online this morning (Wednesday December 9) by actors Holliday Grainger and Micheal Ward.

Saint Maud received nominations in best British independent film, as well as for Glass in best director, screenplay, debut director and debut screenwriter.

Further nominations include breakthrough producer for Oliver Kassman, best actress for Morfydd Clark and best supporting actress for Jennifer Ehle.

A desperate teenager is drawn into a perilous criminal network in an affecting drama that reflects a real-life scandal

“County lines” is slang for a new UK crime phenomenon that is basically as old as the hills: the targeting of vulnerable teenagers from the big city, generally ones absent from school and without stable family support, and using them to traffic drugs out to the provinces via solo train journeys – an invisibly discreet method – and then traffic the resulting cash back. It’s about drug mules, those age-old human beasts of burden, and about using children as the disposable footsoldiers of crime, which Dickens would have recognised. Henry Blake’s debut movie about all this, developed from a short made in 2017, is focused, compassionate and well-acted: a shocking social-realist drama-thriller.

The victim-hero is 14-year-old Tyler (played by Conrad Khan) who lives at home with his mum Toni (Ashley Madekwe) and kid sister.

County Lines is one of the most impressive British films to be released this year, and to mark the digital release, we had the pleasure of speaking to its three leading cast-members, Harris Dickinson, Ashley Madekwe and Conrad Khan. The film, which takes a raw and uncompromising look on how youngsters can be so easily manipulated and recruited to push drugs, features a fine ensemble, and with Dickinson, arguably the most high-profile of the collective, he talks about the difference in making films like Maleficent, to shooting on projects like County Lines.

With Madekwe we ask how familiar a London landscape this film paints, and whether she has met or encountered anyone before who is similar to that of the characters that make up this affecting drama. She also talks about her own career, and which brilliant actors helped guide her when she was young and getting into the industry...

Between my first and second viewings of County Lines, the debut film from youth worker Henry Blake, a fatal turn of events went global. In a halcyon, pre-Covid February, I watched the film in the relative comfort of the BFI Southbank in London. People were spread apart because of low attendance rather than social distancing, likely due to the film’s tiny budget and horrifying subject-matter. I wrote at the time, in an early draft of this review, that it’s an underrated pleasure to watch a small and difficult film projected on a tall and luxurious screen.

Originally slated for April, County Lines is one of the first films to be released in cinemas after Lockdown 2.0, but only in Tier 1 and Tier 2 areas. I’m restricted to a Tier 3 zone, so perhaps the chance to see the film again in a cinema has dissolved. But for those living in the lower tiers,...

Fifteen emerging actors have been longlisted for the British Independent Film Awards (BIFA) 2020 most promising newcomer prize.

They include Niamh Algar, for her role as Ursula in Calm With Horses; Bukky Bakray, Kosar Ali and D’Angelo Osei Kissiedu from Rocks; and Frankie Box and Alfie Deegan from Perfect 10.

The longlist is the latest BIFA announcement this week, following the reveal of three New Talent categories yesterday. The longlists for international feature and documentary will be revealed on Thursday and Friday respectively.
