2025 is halfway over, and at this point, I am realizing that most of the movies I was excited about this year have been a disappointment, but that doesn’t mean that there were no good movies released this as there have been some extremely entertaining ones. But for this article we are only compiling the best of the best films that were released as Prime Video originals this year.

Even when critics don't love a film, that doesn't mean the general audience will avoid it. There has long been a disconnect between critical reviews and the tastes of the viewing public, and it appears that the Reese Witherspoon and Will Ferrell comedy, You're Cordially Invited, is another example of this. Released by Amazon MGM Studios on Prime Video at the end of January, the film wasn't the cup of tea of most critics, but, as it turns out, it has become one of the biggest hits released by the streamer.
Per Deadline, You're Cordially Invited pulled in 50 million worldwide Prime Video viewers via data that was measured over 145 days. This makes the film rank among Amazon MGM Studios' top-three most-watched comedies of all time. During its premiere week, the film landed the No.1 spot on Nielsen's Movie chart with 827 million total minutes streamed and remained in the top ten for three weeks.

In addition to those that had theatrical releases before arriving on the streaming service, such as Ben Affleck's biographical drama Air and Emerald Fennell's psychological thriller Saltburn, Prime Video has also found success with several direct-to-streaming releases.
These titles include the Road House remake starring Jake Gyllenhaal, Another Simple Favor starring Blake Lively and Anna Kendrick, and the Nicholas Galitzine romantic dramas Red, White & Royal Blue and The Idea of You.

Warning: Contains spoilers about the two-part series finale of The Conners, which aired April 23rd.
Between Roseanne and its sequel/spin-off The Conners, there were well over 300 episodes in the Lanford-verse before the Season Seven premiere of The Conners last month. That already would have been a lot of old story to wrap up before the show’s producers started introducing new plotlines — and it all had to be dispensed with in just six 21-minute episodes. A wrongful-death lawsuit over Roseanne’s fatal overdose pre-Conners gave the abbreviated seventh season a dramatic through-line, and viewers hoped that we’d be seeing them off into a more comfortable (imaginary) future. But if the ending of The Conners hadn’t been bittersweet, it wouldn’t have been The Conners: no franchise has ever portrayed struggle better.

Reese Witherspoon revealed in a recent interview with People magazine that she burned a bridge with a fellow actor friend after she roasted her at an awards ceremony. The actor no longer speaks to Witherspoon. The “Walk the Line” Oscar winner did not reveal the actor’s name, but she did admit that the whole situation “haunts me, it literally haunts me.”
“So this friend of mine, who I didn’t really know that well, but she was a very serious, proper actress,” Witherspoon said. “She asked me to give her an award, but I had never been to this award ceremony, so I thought it was like a roast. So I got up and I roasted her.”
“But that was not the tone,” she continued. “The tone was British, elegant, classy, and I was like, ‘Remember the time we got laser hair removal?’ I’m still embarrassed about it.

There is really nothing that is not completely predictable about Amazon Prime Video’s latest big budget romantic comedy, but with Reese Witherspoon back in the genre, and Will Ferrell doing what he does best, the chemistry is there, and so are some laughs, including a real Lol moment involving Ferrell and an uncooperative alligator that is a good reason comedies should probably best be seen with a crowd. Unfortunately, despite its stars and fan-friendly genre, this one is straight to streaming. At least in a Valentine’s Day period, You’re Cordially Invited qualifies more appropriately as a far more pleasant date movie than the horror and action Valentine’s movie the studios have planned this year. It isn’t going to make you forget My Best Friend’s Wedding, Bridesmaids and Father Of The Bride anytime soon, but it’ll do, even as the ‘R’ rating here seems a little harsh.

There is a wildcard at every wedding, but in the case of “You’re Cordially Invited,” there are two. And they are played by Will Ferrell and Reese Witherspoon.
Now streaming on Prime, the film directed by Nicholas Stoller centers on two families who unknowingly double book their weddings at the same small inn — an inn that can really only accommodate one wedding. For Jim (Ferrell), it is his daughter’s, and for Margot (Witherspoon), it is her sister’s. Naturally, the two immediately go insane, trying to force the other to back down.
Somehow, Ferrell and Witherspoon have never led a comedy together, but they are doing it now with a very familiar cast.
Here are the major players you need to know.

Jim is Jenni’s dad, who has been raising her on his own for years since his wife’s death.

Review: Will Ferrell and Reese Witherspoon clashing over competing weddings at the same venue on the same day sounds fun. Even the initial trailer for You’re Cordially Invited gave me some hope that the Nicholas Stoller-directed comedy would give us a one-two punch of actors to root for as they try to undermine one another. With Stoller responsible for some of the funniest romantic comedies of the last decades, including directing Forgetting Sarah Marshall and writing The Muppets, I remained hopeful that this movie would turn out to...

The last truly funny, downright gut-busting, Will Ferrell performance was The Other Guys. Most of Ferrell’s best comedies were made with filmmaker Adam McKay, mid-2000s classics like Step Brothers, Anchorman, and Talladega Nights. But ever since Ferrell played off against Mark Wahlberg as a pair of pencil-pushing cops...

Now that we’re shaking off the ice and snow (at least for a few days), is it too early to think about weddings, or even movie weddings? Sure, they’re always a ripe setting for romance and drama, though for the last couple of decades, it’s proven to be a perfect backdrop for comedy, from the Father Of The Bride reboots to Bride Wars, the Best Man series, and, of course, Bridesmaids. which often concern the ceremony itself and the long “prep”. Well, for this new flick we get two wedding parties, but the big focus isn’t on the couple, but rather on two relatives of the brides. And it’s the first pairing of two movie comedy vets. Weddings are such fertile ground for star-driven comedies it seems impossible to reinvent the sub-genre. A few manage to add a new spin to a setting that has been codified by the likes of “My Best Friend’s Wedding,” “Wedding Crashers,” and “27 Dresses.” “Palm Springs” is an excellent recent example, for instance. “Anyone But You” was less creative but more financially successful thanks to the hottie pair of Glen Powell and Sydney Sweeney.
Into this fray enters “You’re Cordially Invited,” written and directed by Nicholas Stoller, whose efforts include “Forgetting Sarah Marshall” and “Neighbors.” Destined for streaming on Prime Video (like so many comedies these days), this matrimonial romp stars Will Ferrell and Reese Witherspoon. While it’s often funny thanks to an excellent supporting cast, it also drags on too long, and comes to an unearned rom-com conclusion. Let’s just say Ferrell and Witherspoon do not ignite the screen opposite one another,...

If ever there were a season in need of some lighthearted escapism, this winter would surely be it. So audiences may well embrace Amazon’s wedding comedy, “You’re Cordially Invited” — streaming on Prime January 30th — as the equivalent of fast-food comfort. It’s familiar, it goes down easy, and you barely have to make an effort. But when it’s over, you’ll either instantly forget it or wonder why you’ve got such a sour taste in your mouth.
The most surprising thing about this by-the-numbers comedy, in fact, is that it comes to us from writer-director Nicholas Stoller. He updated Kermit & Co. so delightfully in “The Muppets,” tartly reconceived the revenge rom-com with “Forgetting Sarah Marshall,” and scored on the small screen with both “Platonic” and the updated “Goosebumps.”
So it’s tempting to assume that Stoller’s participation here is akin to that of a franchise owner: he set up shop,...

It’s a sign of the times that a good, old-fashioned date movie featuring two of the most bankable movie stars of the early aughts, Reese Witherspoon and Will Ferrell, is bypassing theaters altogether in early 2025. When it comes to writer-director Nicholas Stoller’s latest rom-com — if that’s the word for a film where two adults set out to sabotage one another’s wedding plans — you’re cordially invited to watch “You’re Cordially Invited” at home. The Prime release should play great at any scale while its stars are crossed at one another, but miscalculates their chemistry in a gratuitous and slightly icky epilogue.

Last week, I mentioned to a couple of friends that I was going to a press screening for You’re Cordially Invited, the trailer for which came out last month.
One commented that they hoped everyone in attendance had gotten high to survive it. The other said simply that it looked really bad. In that it’s a straight-to-streaming romcom — it drops on Prime Video this Thursday — I could see why they were apprehensive. My concern bloomed into alarm when I walked into the theater and found myself confronted by a full-screen image of the poster, which depicts a horrified Reese Witherspoon looking on as a muddy Will Ferrell wrestles an alligator. Then I had a great time watching a film that was almost entirely unrecognizable from its representation in its promotional materials. All eight episodes of Goosebumps: The Vanishing made their debut on Disney+ last week, and fans hoping for some answers to that cliffhanger Season 1 ending were left in the lurch as the series took a drastic turn. Instead of picking up where the freshman season left off, Goosebumps completely switched its format into an anthology show, meaning each season focuses on a new story and a different crop of characters. Once more, Season 2 ended with a cliffhanger that saw Trey (Stony Blyden) coughing up an alien slug, and when it comes to all the burning questions fans have, executive producer Rob Letterman is in no hurry to provide answers.
Speaking with Us Weekly, Letterman touched on the Goosebumps: The Vanishing ending, and was asked whether Season 3 would provide any answers – either to what happens with Trey, or what happened after Kanduu's spirit possessed Nathan at the end of Season 1. His response,...

Review: Growing up, I was slightly too old to enjoy Goosebumps. While I was graduating from Christopher Pike novels and R.L. Stine’s Fear Street series to the more mature novels of Stephen King, tons of kids entered the gateway horror of Stine’s fun brand of scary stories to tell in the dark. The anthology series was a hit with kids looking for a good scare, and the big-screen films starring Jack Black amped up the comedy for a big-budget adventure. Disney+ and Hulu’s reboot of the franchise was a successful, scary take on the source material back in 2023, and this year’s sophomore entry is equally good.

Warning: Spoilers for Goosebumps: the Vanishing.
The second season of Disney+’s anthology series, Goosebumps, recently landed on the platform and tells a very different story than its predecessor. The newest season, titled Goosebumps: the Vanishing, follows a group of teenagers in Brooklyn who become entangled in the mystery of four high schoolers who went missing in 1994. At the center of the story is Anthony (David Schwimmer) and his twin children, Cece (Jayden Bartels) and Devin (Sam McCarthy), both of whom come to stay with him for the summer.
Now a botanist, Anthony has grown up in the shadow of his brother Matty’s (Christopher Paul Richards) disappearance 30 years prior. As one of the teens who mysteriously vanished while sneaking around a former military fort, colloquially referred to as Camp Nightmare, Matty’s body was never recovered but all of his clothes were. Because of this, Anthony never believed Matty...

While the horror genre continues to evolve onscreen, the stories of R.L. Stine are spooking audiences of a whole new generation.
In Sony Pictures Television‘s Goosebumps: The Vanishing, Season 2 of the Disney+ anthology adaptation from Rob Letterman and Nicholas Stoller, the author’s works come to life onscreen once again in a whole new setting, the Gravesend neighborhood of Brooklyn.
“I’m shocked by it,” Stine told Deadline. “I have a superstition. I grew up in Columbus, Ohio, in a suburb, so most of the Goosebumps books take place in the backyard, a suburban backyard, which I think most kids can identify with.”
Still, the beloved children’s book scribe says the new season of Goosebumps “looks nice” after filming in Brooklyn and Queens.
Largely inspired by Stay Out of the Basement (1992), Stine’s second entry in the Goosebumps series, The Vanishing follows twins Devin (Sam McCarthy) and Cece...

The second season of the new Goosebumps TV series, Goosebumps: The Vanishing is set to make its premiere on January 10th on Disney+ and Hulu – and with just hours to go until all of the episodes drop, Disney+ has unveiled the opening scene of the first episode. This scene, which takes us back to 1994 Brooklyn and has Beastie Boys on the soundtrack, can be viewed in the embed above.
The first season of Goosebumps centered on a group of five high schoolers as they embark on a shadowy and twisted journey to investigate the tragic passing three decades earlier of a teen named Harold Biddle — while also unearthing dark secrets from their parents’ past. The show is taking the anthology route, so we can expect a second season that has “an entirely new cast and setting based on R.L. Francesca Noel and Ana Ortiz are a mother and daughter who must reckon with the resurgence of a secret from the former's past in Goosebumps: The Vanishing. The latest season of the Disney+ adaptation of R.L. Stine's novels continues Noel's rise to stardom, having previously appeared in a variety of shorts, as well as the coming-of-age drama Selah and the Spades and R#J, a modern-day adaptation of William Shakespeare's classic. A new group of teens find themselves wrapped up in a new horrifying mystery in Goosebumps: The Vanishing. The Disney+ show serves as an adaptation of R.L. Stine's iconic children's horror novels of the same name, with the first season centering on a group of teens in a fictional small town of Washington who inadvertently unleash an evil force connected to the death of a teen from 30 years prior. The Vanishing is taking an anthology approach to the show, focusing on a new set of characters in New York and their investigation into the disappearance of a teen from 30 years prior.

Sam McCarthy and Jayden Bartels are twin siblings whose summer with their dad turns into a nightmare in Goosebumps: The Vanishing. David Schwimmer is venturing into the chilling world of horror for the first time in Goosebumps: The Vanishing. Though having worked steadily through the early '90s in recurring and supporting roles in both film and TV, Schwimmer quickly became a household name thanks to his turn as Ross Geller in the hit sitcom Friends, a role he played for all 10 seasons, and earned an Emmy nomination for. The years since have seen him explore a wide variety of genres, including the true-story-based The People vs. O.J. Simpson: American Crime Story, which netted him his second Emmy nomination, and the animated Madagascar franchise.
Schwimmer stars in Goosebumps: The Vanishing as Anthony, a single father and botanist living in New York whose teenage son Devin and daughter Cece come to stay with him for the summer. Since he was a teenager, Anthony has been haunted by the sudden disappearance of his brother,...

The first trailer has been released for You're Cordially Invited, and it's exactly as chaotic and hilarious as a comedy starring Will Ferrell and Reese Witherspoon should be. The film, hailing from Amazon MGM Studios, follows a father of a bride and the sister of another bride planning rival weddings when they are accidentally planned at the same location. The premise is interesting enough, but the new footage reveals just how far each is willing to go to give their loved ones the perfect wedding day. Spoilers: an alligator is involved.
