You can’t keep a good party down. Warner Bros. is celebrating the success of its new entry into the billion-dollar club. The studio has announced that Barbie will be screening in IMAX theaters for a limited one-week engagement beginning on September 22, according to Variety. Ironically, the Margot Robbie/Ryan Gosling film did not initially get a release on the IMAX format due to Oppenheimer making its grand run on the large screen. Additionally, new footage is said to be attached after the credits during these screenings as a treat for the fans.
Barbie director Greta Gerwig shares her excitement for the format upgrade, “We made Barbie for the big screen, so it’s a thrill to be able to bring it to IMAX, the biggest screen of all. As a special thanks to Barbie fans, we’re excited to share a little bit more of our cast and crew...

The Mushroom Kingdom has given way to Barbieland as Warner Bros.’ “Barbie” has passed the domestic box office total of Universal/Illumination’s “The Super Mario Bros. Movie,” making it the year’s highest-grossing film in the U.S. and Canada.
“Barbie” reached the milestone on its 34th day in theaters to bring its total to $575.4 million. With over $1.3 billion grossed worldwide, “Barbie” is also on the verge of passing “Mario” at the overall box office, needing approximately $50 million to become the year’s top global grosser.
With another $25 million, “Barbie” will become just the 14th film in box office history to reach $600 million in North America before inflation adjustment. It would be the first Warner Bros. title to do so, having already passed the all-time domestic record for the studio held by “The Dark Knight” with an unadjusted $534 million total in 2008.

Day Two of CinemaCon got off to an early start, which meant a subdued and potentially casino-fogged audience in the Caesar’s Palace Colosseum. And then Warner Bros. Discovery chief David Zaslav took the stage.
“We believe in full windowing of the motion pictures,” he told a theater full of theater owners. “We do not want to do direct-to-streaming movies. We are in no rush to bring the movies to Max.”
That woke them up.
Last year, CinemaCon was where Warner Bros. basically apologized for going day-and-date in theaters and on HBO Max with its entire slate of movies — a Jason Kilar plan to come out of the Covid pandemic. Well, Kilar’s gone, HBO Max is soon to become Max, and this definitely ain’t that Warner Bros. Discovery.
Zaslav said it’s not just “good business” to be completely committed to theatrical, but that America “needs to rally right now.

Two weeks after showing off the future of their rebranded Max streaming service, David Zaslav and Warner Bros. embraced theatrical as they showed off their upcoming 2023 slate at CinemaCon in Las Vegas.
Zaslav made his debut at the movie theater trade show on Tuesday with a lengthy speech that earned plenty of applause from cinema execs, especially when he reaffirmed his company’s plans to never go back to the day-and-date releasing model that his predecessor, Jason Kilar, rolled out for all of Warner’s theatrical releases in 2021.
“We believe in full theatrical windows, we don’t believe in direct to streaming. Refresh for updates: Big stuff expected here this morning at CinemaCon in Las Vegas as Warner Bros struts its 2023 slate.
Teeing off this morning was Warner Bros Domestic Distribution Chief Jeff Goldstein and Internatioinal Distribution Cheif Andrew Cripps jogging onstage all clad in pink suits, in celebration to the studio’s late summer anticipated hit, Barbie.
“By a show of hands who wore it better, Andrew or me?” beamed Goldstein
“As Barbie says, everybody looks better in pink!” the distrib exec added.
“I’m not sure, Jeff, ” added Cripps.
“Hello, everybody, we’re both tickled pink,” Goldstein continued to pun.
The two touted the success of this past weekend’s Evil Dead Rise, which made its pivot from Max streaming service to an exclusive theatrical window. They also took time to reflect on the legacy of former distrib colleague, MGM’s Erik Lomis. This led into a 100 Years studio sizzle reel with flashes of Elvis,...

MGM has formed a new overseas distribution partnership with Warner Bros. that will begin in November with the Luca Guadagnino film “Bones and All” and continue for at least three years.
The deal, which will see Warner receive a new stream of incremental revenue through distribution fees, comes just two months after Pamela Abdy and Michael De Luca left their position as heads of MGM to become co-chairs and CEOs of Warner Bros. Motion Picture Group. They negotiated the deal with MGM’s COO Christopher Brearton; Warner’s international distribution chief Andrew Cripps will oversee distribution of these titles.
The new agreement also includes worldwide physical home entertainment distribution on all newly released MGM titles. Under the terms of this deal, MGM and Warner will collaborate on overseas marketing/advertising, publicity, film distribution and exhibitor relations for all of MGM’s films starting in 2023, with Warner responsible for execution.

Gotham’s hero is back with a vengeance as “The Batman 2” is officially greenlit at Warner Bros. Robert Pattinson will re-don the Caped Crusader cowl and eyeliner again in the titular role, as the studio confirmed during Tuesday night’s Las Vegas CinemaCon presentation.
Warner Bros. Discovery announced the sequel to the 2022 hit that has earned the company 760 millon globally. Also announced is Matt Reeves’ return to direct the follow-up film, which will expand upon Warner Bros.’ sprawling Gotham universe.
Plot details remain under wraps.
Sequel plans were inevitable following the film’s massive box office success since its March 4 release date, and the 45-day theatrical window before premiering on Warner Bros. Discovery-owned streamer HBO Max paid off: The film, since dropping on the platform April 18 and despite parallel availability on premium VOD, reached over 4 million households. Right now, “The Batman” is number 2 on the VOD charts at iTunes and Google.

Disruption will continue to weigh on the international theatrical system as the Russia-Ukraine war drags on and well over half of China’s theaters are shuttered in the latest Covid crackdown.
Andrew Cripps, president, international theatrical distribution, Warner Bros Pictures, said that Russia — which is currently being boycotted by studios — makes up about 5 of international annual box office on average, indexing higher or lower depending on the year. The war “is a tragedy that’s happening. Over the last couple of years, we’ve all learned to live with uncertainty. Including theaters being shut around the world. This is for a different reason, and we have to hope there is some semblance of a solution,” he said during an appearance at CinemaCon.
“I don’t know – is it ceasefire, and a pullout? I just don’t know at this point. Only that there are no Hollywood releases at all going into the country.

It wouldn’t be the return of CinemaCon in full force without the cheerleaders. As exhibitors, distributors, and press trooped back into Caesars Palace in Las Vegas, it didn’t take long to get some dramatic data points about the true power of theatrical releases.
Cinépolis CEO Alejandro Ramírez Magaña, who oversees the world’s fourth-largest theater chain, had a message for studio execs sitting at front-and-center reserved tables: The best way to avoid piracy is a healthy and exclusive theatrical window. On the flip side, day-and-date streaming is perfect if you want your film to be pirated — it’s virtually a guarantee for illegal downloading and a loss of revenue. And: He brought receipts (and his corporate communications team sent them to IndieWire).
Day-and-date continues to be a highly unpopular strategy among the exhibitors at CinemaCon. Marvel’s “Black Widow” went day-and-date in theaters and on Disney+ on 2020. Ahead of its merger with Discovery,...

Warner Bros/Legendary Pictures’ Dune has hit a new milestone, crossing the $400M mark worldwide. Through Monday, the international box office cume is $292.3M with $107.8M from domestic for a an estimated global haul of $400.1M so far.
The epic film starring Timothée Chalamet, Zendaya, Rebecca Ferguson, Oscar Isaac, Javier Bardem and more, debuted to great acclaim at the Venice Film Festival last year. In recent weeks, it has earned 10 Oscar nominations and leads the BAFTA noms with 11 mentions — though, head-scratchingly, visionary helmer Denis Villeneuve was left out of the directing races by both of those awards bodies. Villeneuve is, quite rightly, a DGA nominee.
His Dune adaptation of Frank Herbert’s 1965 classic sci-fi novel had a strategic offshore rollout following the Venice debut. It boasts China as its biggest overseas market (having scored a rare 2021 date) with $39.5M, followed by France ($32.6M), UK ($30M), Germany ($22.5M) and Russia ($21.3M); all through Sunday.

Warner Bros/Legendary’s sci-fi epic Dune is crossing the $300M mark globally today, with North America totaling $71M through Monday and including $228.3M at the international box office.
The Denis Villeneuve-directed world-building movie, based on Frank Herbert’s classic novel, initially debuted at the Venice Film Festival where it garnered strongly positive response. It has been on a staggered opportunistic release pattern since, smartly staying away from No Time To Die and Venom 2, and expanding two frames ago in step with the domestic release. This past weekend saw an offshore drop of 54% (when excluding China that translates to 34%). France boosted 3% during vacation play while other dips were slight in Korea (-14%), Germany (-22%), Brazil (-27%), Japan (-30%), the UK (-32%) and Spain (-35%).
Korea, which has been soft of late, is notable at No. 1 this past frame — as well as on Monday and Tuesday this week, and has cumed $7.6M through Tuesday.

What does the international box office and cinema landscape look like in an emerging post-pandemic world? That was the gist of an executive roundtable at CineEurope in Barcelona today. Among the key takeaways: the relationship between exhibition and distribution and a need for more collaboration in terms of reaching consumers. With so much content available in-home, the bar has been raised for returning people’s habits to the theatrical experience.
Andrew Cripps, Warner Bros President of International Theatrical Distribution commented, “We have to recognize how the world has dramatically changed… Getting the consumer out of the house to consume entertainment is a challenge, and God knows it was a challenge before. The bar is higher, and collectively between exhibition and distribution, we have to do better.”
He continued, “We have more data at our fingertips collectively than we have ever had. The data is available… We have to collectively act on that.

Taking a low-key approach, Warner Bros. presented new footage Tuesday for its theatrical slate over the next seven months at exhibitors’ confab CinemaCon in Las Vegas.
The studio’s reel shown at the showroom at Caesars Palace included new footage of “The Batman” starring Robert Pattinson and the opening sequence for “The Many Saints of Newark” that is a prequel to “The Sopranos.” A glimpse at the first trailer for “The Matrix 4” was also revealed, along with its title: “The Matrix: Resurrections.” For Clint Eastwood’s neo-Western drama “Cry Macho,” the presentation was a mini-homage to Eastwood’s career with praise via recorded comments by Steven Spielberg, Meryl Streep and other cinema luminaries. The tributes were mixed with “Cry Macho” movie clips.
Beyond the near-term theatrical slate, Warner Bros. teased that five movie adaptations of its DC Comics properties are expected down the road.

Warner Bros went completely virtual at CinemaCon on Tuesday with a pre-recorded hourlong reel sans executives onstage. We understand that the lack of brass had nothing do with Covid, nor any kind of day-and-date head-ducking, rather their senior ranking domestic and international distribution guys were unable to attend the confab for respective personal commitments. Warners does have other members from its distribution team attending the confab who were in the audience.
Projected on the big screen in Caesars’ Colosseum Theatre, Domestic Distribution president Jeff Goldstein greeted everyone at the top of the reel followed by Warner Bros Pictures Group president and chief content officer Toby Emmerich.
Goldstein addressed the elephant in the room, the studio’s 2020 pandemic theatrical-day-and-date HBO Max model, saying that “controversial choices” were made “but we worked through it all with you, our partners.” Deadline has consistently heard from exhibitors that Warner Bros has been generous with...

A second round of layoffs has hit Disney-owned Fox divisions, this time affecting New York-based ad sales employees at the former Fox Networks Group.
The division was dissolved following Disney’s acquisition of 21st Century Fox’s film and TV assets, a large portion of which went over to Disney. The division also included the Fox broadcasting network, which stayed behind with Fox. The layoffs are a mix of VP and director level.
Major layoffs hit Fox in the ensuing days after Disney closed its $71.3 billion acquisition of 21st Century Fox’s film and TV assets.

No Avatar 2. No Star Wars: Episode IX.
Disney’s star-less CinemaCon presentation on Wednesday evening (April 3) was the first time the industry got to see Disney and Fox executives side-by-side since the $71.3bn acquisition closed, and will be remembered first and foremost for stunning footage from Jon Favreau’s upcoming summer release The Lion King.
There was also the sense of much to do and lots of planning ahead from an opening sizzle reel that featured outsized tentpoles from both studios and a sly moment when Wolverine is seen asking, “What is this place?”

Walt Disney Studios chairman Alan Horn spoke to exhibitors at CinemaCon in his first public speech since Disney completed its merger with 20th Century Fox.
Horn was joined by Fox vice chair Emma Watts, the senior-most member of 20th Century Fox to make the transition to Disney. Chairman/CEO Stacey Snider departed from the company following the merger’s completion on March 20, with distribution chiefs Chris Aronson and Andrew Cripps also leaving.
“I’m still getting my mind around all this and internalizing it,” Horn said. We are truly excited because together we will be more than the sum of our parts.”
