Desus Nice Uses ‘Daily Show’ Guest Host Gig to Dunk on DJ Envy Over Fraud Accusations: ‘I’m Just Reading the News’ (Video)
The Daily Show (1996)
During his second night guest hosting “The Daily Show,” Desus Nice had a special segment for Comedy Central viewers: ripping into a guy he doesn’t like, DJ Envy.

“I know some people expect me to come on here and just do my thing where I roast people that I have beef with, but this is a serious show,” Nice said before putting on his “spectacles” and launching into some financial news. The guest late night host then proceeded to use five minutes of his eight-minute monologue to rip into DJ Envy, a man he’s been publicly feuding with since 2018.

“Wow, DJ Envy is in trouble for real estate fraud. What a serious story. It’s definitely not funny,” Nice said.

Understanding Nice’s feud with DJ Envy requires some backstory. Throughout their show and podcasting careers, Desus Nice and The Kid Mero have cultivated a reputation for being...

Hundreds Of Late-Night Comedy-Variety Writers Pledge To Support WGA Diversity Initiative
Image
More than 250 writers have signed or endorsed a WGA pledge to increase diversity, equity and inclusion in late-night comedy-variety writers rooms.

The pledge calls for concrete steps to ensure that the hiring pipeline is open and accessible to Bipoc writers; to address unconscious biases in the review process of writing packets; to create informal and formal mechanisms to support Bipoc writers’ ability to succeed in traditionally white writers rooms; and to ensure that diverse voices are heard, supported and elevated.

“These commitments are just a start to a long process,” the pledge, released Tuesday, states. “We must create an industry in which diversity is not an aspirational goal but is a fundamental trait. Our industry will not be a diverse, equitable, and inclusive industry until it is that by default – until the pipelines into the industry and the hiring processes, room cultures, and supervisory structures at shows together create an...

Romeo Santos Plays the Role of a Drunk, Scorned Lover at the Latin Grammys
Image
Romeo Santos, the Bronx native considered the king of bachata, played the role of a drunk, scorned level at the Latin Grammys when he performed his hit “Bebo,” off his latest album Fórmula, Vol. 3.

He stumbled around the stage, which was littered with empty liquor bottles. He pretended to take sips from one and then jumped into the song. Accompanied by background singers and a guitarist who dominated his solos, Romeo ended his set with a little tumble to the floor to fully play into his role.

Throughout his career...

Desus and Mero Breakup Was ‘a Strategy’ Planned Over a Year in Advance, The Kid Mero Says
Image
One of the more shocking pop culture developments of 2022 was the breakup of Desus Nice and The Kid Mero, the longtime comedy duo who turned their hit podcast “Bodega Boys” into a comedy empire that culminated in the late night talk show “Desus & Mero,” which ran for four seasons on Showtime. Last month, the stars abruptly revealed that they would not only be ending their Showtime series, but also their creative partnership as a whole.

At the time, a Showtime spokesperson told IndieWire, “Showtime’s late-night talk show ‘Desus & Mero’ will not be returning for a fifth season. Its final episode aired Thursday, June 23. Desus Nice and The Kid Mero will be pursuing separate creative endeavors moving forward.”

Since then, fan speculation has run rampant about whether the breakup was the result of a feud between the two comedians. But that’s not the way Desus and Mero see it.

The Kid Mero Explains ‘Desus & Mero’ Split and Why the Show Ended: ‘It Was a Strategy’ We ‘All Agreed On’
Image
Joel Martinez, best known as The Kid Mero, appeared on SiriusXM’s “Basic!” podcast and broke his silence on ending his longtime partnership with Desus Nice (real name Daniel Baker). The two gained popularity with their “Bodega Boys” podcast, which launched in 2015, and then became late-night staples with their Showtime series “Desus & Mero.” Fans were shocked when the network announced last month that “Desus & Mero” was abruptly ending after four seasons.

“Desus and I had discussed pursuing separate interests over a year prior to the show coming to an end and that conversation solidified us in signing overall agreements that recognized our intent to operate independent of one another,” Mero said on the podcast. “As far back as June of last year we were both pitching or looking to join existing projects as individuals.”

Mero acknowledged that going solo was a hard decision to make and “the intent...

Critic’s Notebook: Showtime’s ‘Desus & Mero’ Is Gone Way Too Soon
Image
Click here to read the full article.

Normally when shows are abruptly canceled, I’m accustomed to directing my ire at the network or streamer — to wondering why Netflix even bothers making shows for young adult viewers if they’re just going to pull the plug prematurely time and time again, or to pondering why Warner Bros would order a second season of Chad and promote multiple premiere dates for it and then yank the already-shot season without bothering to air it.

That’s why it’s hard to know how to respond to Monday (July 18) afternoon’s formal announcement that Desus & Mero, the Showtime late-night series seemingly on a normal summer hiatus, wouldn’t be returning.

The show’s official Twitter feed declared, “Bodega Hive: The illustrious @desusnice and @Thekidmero will be pursuing separate creative endeavors moving forward. #DESUSandMERO will not be returning to Showtime. It’s been a good run,...

The Kid Mero and Desus Nice in Desus & Mero (2016)

Desus & Mero show done at Showtime, duo is splitting up
Image
Rarely does one hear these words, but the bodega is closed.

The podcasting and cable talk show hosts Desus Nice and The Kid Mero sent millennials into a tailspin on Monday, announcing that their longtime partnership had come to an end. “[This] feels like the Beatles-splitting-up of my generation,” one wrote.

Showtime issued a statement that read “Desus Nice and The Kid Mero will be pursuing separate creative endeavors moving forward,” when it announced that there would be no fifth season of their provocative late-night chat show, “Desus & Mero.” The final episode aired in late June.

Showtime’s series began in February 2019 and was the third series co-hosted by the pair after one with the same name on Viceland from late 2016 to mid-2018, and “Desus vs. Mero” which ran from 2013 to 2014 on ComplexTV. The two Bronx-born hosts also had a podcast, “The Bodega Boys,” which is, we now know, not coming back from its hiatus.

Desus & Mero Split, Announce End of Showtime Series After 4 Seasons
Image
The comedy duo Desus and Mero are going their separate ways, bringing an end to their late-night Showtime series after four seasons. Desus Nice, real name Daniel Baker, and The Kid Mero, real name Joel Martinez, debuted the series in 2019, mixing together sketches with high-profile celebrity interviews. Across the four seasons and 170+ episodes, the pair interviewed the likes of former President Barack Obama, David Letterman, Jeff Bridges, Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, and Joe Biden (before he was President). The fourth season premiered back in March; however, the series cut back to just one episode a week, as opposed to the usual two episodes. This came after speculation on social media that the long-time comedy duo had fallen out. The Season 4 finale aired on June 23. “Desus Nice and The Kid Mero will be pursuing separate creative endeavors moving forward. I knew Ziwe Fumudoh had truly made it when she was both parodied and saluted on the latest season of Succession, an au courant satire ostensibly about the ouroboros that is media itself. The acid-tongued cringe comedian, who found an audience through YouTube and Instagram commenting on privilege politics before eventually landing a newsy late night Showtime talk show of her own in 2021, cameos on the caustic HBO dramedy as a fictionalized version of herself. She plays Sophie Iwobi, a take-no-prisoners millennial pundit who skewers Kendall Roy (Jeremy Strong) on her late night show, calling him a “jar of mayonnaise in a Prada suit” and “Wokestar Royco” as he flailingly virtue-signals his way through a public campaign to usurp his father as the head of a mass media conglomerate. Kendall, who pretends to slurp up ironic subversion, insists on appearing as a guest on the show,...

‘Desus & Mero’: Showtime Series Takes Week Off As Host Contracts Covid
Image
Showtime’s late-night series Desus & Mero is taking the week off after Desus Nice, otherwise known as Daniel Baker, was hit by Covid-19. The series, which moved from twice a week to weekly with the return of its fourth season earlier this month, will be postponed due to the positive test.

Desus said that he’s been isolating, is vaxxed and boosted and “right now my only symptom is boredom.”

It comes a year after The Kid Mero, otherwise known as Joel Martinez, also contracted Covid. In that case, the show carried on but was tweaked to include some pre-taped segments.

The duo have been back in the studio since June 2021.

The launch of the fourth season March 10 saw them bring in their first official showrunner in J.D. Amato, the executive producer of The Chris Gethard Show and senior field producer of The Problem with Jon Stewart.

‘Desus & Mero’ Returns to a Weekly Format as Showtime Announces Season 4 Premiere Date
Image
Showtime’s “Desus & Mero” is reverting back to a once-a-week schedule. The critically acclaimed late-night talker returns for Season 4 on Thursday, March 10 at 11 p.m. Et, with Oscar nominee Denzel Washington as the show’s first guest.

Also new to the show is J.D. Amato (“The Chris Gethard Show”), who has joined “Desus & Mero” as showrunner and executive producer. Hosts Desus Nice and The Kid Mero are back in studio for the season premiere. Other guests set for this season include Mark Wahlberg and Tom Holland, Pusha T and Damson Idris.

“Desus & Mero” had most recently aired twice a week, on Sundays and Thursdays; but the once-a-week schedule will allow the hosts and producers to focus their energies on perfecting one episode a week. “Desus & Mero” debuted on Showtime in February 2019 as a weekly show, but by April had expanded to twice a week, on Mondays and Thursdays.

‘Desus & Mero’: Showtime Late-Night Series Goes Weekly & Brings In First Showrunner
Image
Desus & Mero are back with a fourth season but they’re cutting their on-screen time in half.

Showtime is moving the late-night show from twice a week to one episode a week beginning Thursday March 10 with the launch of its fourth season.

The pair also have their first official showrunner – J.D. Amato, exec producer of The Chris Gethard Show, and senior field producer of The Problem with Jon Stewart, joins in that role and exec producer.

The moves come as the pair are looking to get back to basics after two years of Covid-affected production – although arguably Desus Nice and The Kid Mero handled shooting from home better than most. The intention is to return to the original weekly schedule to put their creative efforts into one episode.

The series initially launched on Thursday, February 21, 2019, but by April 2019, they were going twice a week with another episode on Mondays. In...

Image
Desus & Mero are leaving their home sneaker wall behind and heading back into the studio to record their late-night Showtime series.

The pair will return to their newly revamped studio on June 20 for the first time since March 2020, when the pandemic forced them to shoot their show remotely. Flamboyant country rapper Lil Nas X, known for his hits “Old Town Road” and “Montero (Call Me By Your Name),” will be their first illustrious guest.

They become the latest late-night hosts to return to the studio. The majority of the nightly shows are back in the studio including The Late Show, The Tonight Show, Jimmy Kimmel Live!, Late Night and The Late Late Show. Only The Daily Show is still shooting remotely from host Trevor Noah’s home.

The pair actually bought their own facility just before the pandemic — the old Al Jazeera studio, complete with bulletproof glass — having previously shot...

Desus & Mero And Ziwe Are Pulling Late-Night And Sketch Comedy Into The 21st Century
Image
Late-night television hasn’t changed a great deal since Johnny Carson took over The Tonight Show nearly 60 years ago. There’s been the odd exception, such as Arsenio Hall’s syndicated show finding a young audience and bringing Bill Clinton’s saxophone licks to the country, or Joan Rivers briefly interloping on Fox. However, it’s largely been the preserve of middle-aged white men, wearing suits, joking about the events of the day with a few celebrity guests and sketches thrown in.

Enter Desus & Mero, and more recently their protégée Ziwe.

Desus & Mero, otherwise known as Desus Nice and The Kid Mero (or Daniel Baker and Joel Martinez), have brought a louder, more youth-skewing, social media-friendly take to the genre, a gonzo, weed-smoking sensibility with fresh kicks.

First breaking through via online brand Complex and their Bodega Boys podcast, before scoring a series on Viceland, which ran for over...

Ziwe: Late-Night Is Having A “Renaissance” As Showtime Sets Premiere For Sketch Comedy
Image
Ziwe has lifted the lid on her eponymous Showtime sketch comedy series as the ViacomCBS network has set a May premiere for the show.

The network will launch Ziwe on Sunday May 8 at 11pm.

The six-part series, which scored a straight-to-series order in October, will feature interviews, musical numbers, guest stars, sketches, fake commercials and field pieces.

Ziwe Fumudoh, speaking at Showtime’s virtual press tour, says the show is a culmination of her refining her voice over the years, through stand up, writing for shows like Desus & Mero and Dickinson and a breakout Instagram Live series.

She also said that the main difference between her Ig show and the Showtime series was that this was a “fully-fledged” production. It will feature Search Party and At Home with Amy Sedaris star Cole Escola, who Ziwe said was also a writer on the show, as well as guest appearances from...

Announced back in October, the upcoming show will be hosted by Ziwe, taking the skills she’s brought to various online platforms and bringing them to a premium cable variety/sketch series.

In the official pre-panel announcement, Showtime said the upcoming season, spanning six episodes, “will feature interviews, musical numbers, guest stars, sketches and more – including unscripted and unpredictable interactions with everyday people.”

“Ziwe” will draw on its star’s talent as a writer (she previously worked on “Desus & Mero” when hosts Desus Nice and The Kid Mero made jump to Showtime) and a musician (her seven-song debut album dropped at the end of...

‘Desus & Mero’ Hosts Still Have Plenty to Rip Into, Even in a Post-Trump World
Image
The brand remains strong. Showtime’s critically acclaimed late-night sensation “Desus & Mero” returns for a third season on Jan. 31, and continues its twice-a-week Sunday-and-Thursday schedule after that. Variety spoke to hosts Desus Nice and The Kid Mero about what to expect as their show returns in a post-President Trump world.

What did you think of the inauguration?

Desus Nice: It was very much like Obama’s first inauguration, where you were kind of nervous. When they were outside the car, you were like, “I hope the snipers are ready. Let’s make sure everyone gets where they need to get to!” But it felt like a real American inauguration. This one had all the pomp and circumstance. Lady Gaga, you had Jennifer Lopez representing the Bx.

The Kid Mero: Yeah, after four years, it’s a little surreal to be like, “Yo, this is normal. This is a normal inauguration.
