Director James Mangold explores a pivotal chapter in Bob Dylan’s early career in A Complete Unknown. Our review:
It is a truth universally acknowledged that music biopics must follow The Formula. Whether they’re about Ray Charles or Elton John or Amy Winehouse or Brit rock outfit Queen, their stories follow a path of pivotal childhood experiences, chance meetings, paths to fame and the scourge of drink and drugs, before everything’s wrapped up with a rousing concert at the end.
The Formula was so well understood by 2007 that Walk Hard: The Dewey Cox Story fired a silver bullet at the wretched thing – and yet still the template staggered on, showing up largely unscathed in the likes of Bohemian Rhapsody and Back To Black.
Almost 20 years after he made Walk The Line – a film openly lampooned by the above-mentioned Dewey Cox Story – its director, James Mangold is back in...

In A Complete Unknown, Timothée Chalamet and co-star Edward Norton made an effort to include as many nods to their real-life characters as possible.
At Tuesday’s Los Angeles premiere of the James Mangold-directed Bob Dylan biopic, which debuts Dec. 25 in theaters, Chalamet told Deadline his and Norton’s “conversation was endless” on how they wanted to honor Dylan and Pete Seeger in the film.
“We were so into the songs, it was more like, how can we get ‘Death of Hattie [Carroll]’ in the movie,” recalled Norton. “The best thing is when you enjoy the raw materials of it all enough that you want to put more in it than there’s any room for. I think we wanted more Bob, more Pete, more Joan [Baez] in there than you could fit into one movie.”
Chalamet added, “That is perfectly said. We were like a menace to Jim because we...

“Walk the Line” was hardly the first Hollywood movie that dared to serve up a facsimile-driven portrait of a singularly original artist, as though lightning-in-a-bottle creative genius could ever hope to be recaptured by studio notes and a three-act structure, but if writer-director James Mangold didn’t invent the standard-issue music biopic, I would argue that he committed the far more reprehensible crime of perfecting it — of so perfectly crystallizing the sub-genre in the public imagination that it had to be destroyed from several different angles at once. Arriving at essentially the same time some two years later, Jake Kasdan’s “Walk Hard” and Todd Haynes’ “I’m Not There” both humiliated Mangold’s 2005 Johnny Cash biopic for its formulaic inauthenticity; one was a parody and the other a prism, but each of those (under-performing) cult classics so devastatingly exposed the paint-by-numbers essence of Mangold’s Oscar-winning hit that Hollywood naturally...

For the first time, Bob Dylan has publicly acknowledged the upcoming biopic about his early years in New York, “A Complete Unknown,” which stars Timothée Chalamet as the young folk music legend.
“There’s a movie about me opening soon called A Complete Unknown (what a title!). Timothee Chalamet is starring in the lead role. Timmy’s a brilliant actor so I’m sure he’s going to be completely believable as me. Or a younger me. Or some other me,” Dylan wrote on X, a platform on which he has recently become active.
He continued, “The film’s taken from Elijah Wald’s Dylan Goes Electric – a book that came out in 2015. It’s a fantastic retelling of events from the early ‘60s that led up to the fiasco at Newport. After you’ve seen the movie read the book.”
Chalamet responded the following day, writing on X, “Floored.

You don’t need to be a Bob Dylan aficionado to appreciate Timothée Chalamet’s transformation into the iconic folk singer. Even if your knowledge of Dylan’s career is limited to a few famous tracks or a vague recollection of his controversial shift to electric guitar, Chalamet’s performance in “A Complete Unknown” is undeniably a career best. He’s emerging as a leading contender for his first Academy Award — a compelling performance that may prove difficult for voters to ignore.
On Wednesday night in Los Angeles, Searchlight Pictures hosted two packed screenings of “A Complete Unknown” at the Fox Lot, followed by Q&a sessions featuring director and co-writer James Mangold, actors Monica Barbaro and Elle Fanning, costume designer Arianne Phillips, and production designer François Audouy. Chalamet, currently filming Josh Safdie’s new period project “Marty Supreme,” was notably absent, but his presence wasn’t needed to dominate the conversation.

Fearless in some hypnotic moments,” Variety‘s senior awards editor Clayton Davis wrote on X. “For me, it’s Monica Barbaro and Elle Fanning that anchor the story of an illusive, mysterious man that remains in that sphere. James Mangold helms with confidence, with gorgeous sets and costumes. Much respect to one of the best to do it.”
Film critic Scott Menzel said Chalamet “delivers the performance of the year,” adding: “A true tour-de-force where Chalamet is never seen. Chalamet’s performance is not just about the voice and look but rather all of...

Last year, the Prime Video streaming service released the ten episode series Daisy Jones & The Six (watch it Here), based on the best-selling novel by Taylor Jenkins Reid – a novel that was partially inspired by the complicated issues Fleetwood Mac band members Mick Fleetwood, John McVie, Christine McVie, Lindsey Buckingham, and Stevie Nicks dealt with behind the scenes. It isn’t directly the Fleetwood Mac story, but comparisons are unavoidable… and Steve Nicks soon let it be known that she loved the show and had watched its full run multiple times. She said, “It brought back memories that made me feel like a ghost watching my own story. It was very emotional for me,” and she joined many fans in hoping that there would be a second season. Since Daisy Jones & The Six covered the full story of Reid’s novel and was categorized as a limited series,...

Timothée Chalamet as legendary songwriter and performer Bob Dylan discovers the cost of celebrity fame in the official trailer for James Mangold’s biopic A Complete Unknown.
Part of that price is having to meet audience expectations in the 1960s music world that came between the artist, his songs and his fans, Chalamet as Dylan complains in the preview. “They just want me to be singing ‘Blowin’ in the Wind’ for the rest of my goddamn life,” Dylan says at one point in the latest look at the Searchlight film.

Timothée Chalamet sings Dylan, and grumps just like him too in the new official trailer for James Mangold’s A Complete Unknown. Charting the West Village era of the great Dylan’s rise to international fame, the clip hits all the high points of the near-mythological story: The arrival from Minnesota, the early romance, the flirtation with Joan Baez (Monica Barbaro), the run-in with Newport Folkies angered over his gone electric move.
And we get to hear some clips, with Chalamet doing a decent Dylan, at first on the gentle “Girl From The North Country” and then on the rollicking “Like A Rolling Stone.”

Timothée Chalamet showed off more of his singing chops in the new trailer for “A Complete Unknown,” James Mangold’s bio-drama about Bob Dylan.
The new footage shows Chalamet singing “Girl From the North Country” as he arrives in New York from Minnesota. He begins to cozy up to fellow folk singer Joan Baez (played by Monica Barbaro) as the two spark a romance.
“Your songs are like an oil painting at the dentist’s office,” he tells her, clutching a guitar while shirtless in bed. At the kitchen sink, Baez responds, “You’re kind of an asshole, Bob.”
The trailer also features footage of Dylan and Baez duetting at the 1963 Monterey Folk Festival. A love triangle brews as Elle Fanning arrives as Sylvie Russo, a fictionalized version of Dylan’s then-girlfriend Suze Rotolo, who appears on the album cover of “The Freewheelin’ Bob Dylan.”

So, what popular series does the fourth episode, titled "If I Can't Reach You Let My Song Teach You," reference? Right up until his death in 2022, Bob Neuwirth was known to cognoscenti as a songwriter (“Mercedes Benz,” famously recorded by Janis Joplin), painter, recording artist, and onetime member of Bob Dylan’s inner hipster circle. The last thing he was known for was being famous, which his longtime partner, music executive Paula Batson, says was intentional. “He was very self-effacing in a way,” she says. “He didn’t believe in blowing your own horn. He loved promoting other people and helping them, but he wasn’t good at self-promotion.”

James Mangold’s Bob Dylan biopic A Complete Unknown stars Timothée Chalamet, and will be arriving on Christmas Day in the US.
When it was revealed last month (alongside a trailer for the upcoming film) that James Mangold’s A Complete Unknown would be arriving in cinemas in 2024, a few eyebrows went up. The project began filming back in March (according to IMDb) and wrapped near the end of June.
Still, Mangold can be a quick worker when it comes to the post-production stage of filmmaking, depending on the film of course. Whilst Le Mans ’66 took a year to make it through the editing room, his other musical biopic – 2005’s Walk The Line – released in cinemas six months after entering the post-production phase and it looks like the filmmaker will be doing the same again here.

Timothée Chalamet channels Bob Dylan in the first trailer for James Mangold’s upcoming biopic A Complete Unknown.
The Dune actor takes on the role of the iconic folk singer-songwriter, who became a counter-culture force in the 1960s. Chalamet has also said he does his own singing for the role — just like his Dune Part 2 co-star Austin Butler did for his role in Elvis — building on his musical work following his performance in Wonka.
Here’s a first look at the Searchlight Pictures film, which includes Chalamet performing Dylan’s classic “A Hard Rain’s A-Gonna Fall” amid shots of the singer’s life and career.

Come gather ’round, people, wherever you roam. The trailer for James Mangold’s “A Complete Unknown” is here, along with the first official footage of Timothée Chalamet as Bob Dylan.
In theaters this December, the biographical drama, written by Mangold and Jay Cocks, follows the folk music legend’s early years in New York City, leading up to the Earth-shattering moment he strapped on an electric guitar during his 1965 Newport Folk Festival performance.
In the trailer, Chalamet walks the streets of Manhattan, passing Dylan’s favorite spots including Cafe Wha? and Hotel Chelsea. The actor also sings a rousing rendition of Dylan’s 1963 protest song “A Hard Rain’s a-Gonna Fall.” A love triangle seems begins to brew between Dylan and Monica Barbaro’s Joan Baez and Elle Fanning’s Sylvie Russo, who appears to be a fictionalized version of Dylan’s then-girlfriend Suze Rotolo, who appears on the album...

The cast of Daisy Jones & The Six were set to take the stage once again according to series star Suki Waterhouse.
Waterhouse shared in a YouTube vlog on Thursday from the 2023 Lollapalooza festival that she along with the cast, which also included Sam Claflin, Riley Keough, Josh Whitehouse, Sebastian Chacon and Will Harrison, were supposed to perform at the Chicago-based music festival last summer.
“That whole thing was planned, we got people visas, like, it was an operation. And then the SAG strike happened, so we all decided that we should not perform at Lollapalooza,” the actress and singer recalled. Amid the strike, guidelines stated that the union’s affected members would be prohibited from all principal on-camera work — including acting, singing, dancing and stunts — on top of off-camera work, such as voice-acting and narration. All promotional activity such as interviews, award shows and podcasts were also not allowed by union members at the time.

“Something that we were all really drawn to is the ornamentation of the Victorian era,” explains “Manhunt” production designer Chloe Arbiture about taking a bolder approach to designing over 200 sets for what a well-known period in history: the aftermath of the assassination of the 16th U.S. President. “We wanted modern audiences to relate to it and to feel like there was a stake in it,” she explains about her team’s focus on ornamentation, decoration and detail. “When we look through; I mean even I’m guilty of it, but when I look through black and white photographs, I don’t really feel like this big human connection to things. But we all talked about how what makes the story human is color, is richness, is detail, and that’s something that really drove us through the entire creative process from the beginning to the end.” Watch our exclusive video interview above.

Update: Soon after this story was published, a source reached out to Variety to confirm that “Daisy Jones and the Six” will not be getting a Season 2 because “it was always planned as a limited series.”
Despite the success of “Daisy Jones & the Six,” star Riley Keough says the band isn’t getting back together anytime soon.
Despite fans hoping — and demanding — a second season of the Prime Video miniseries adaptation of Tara Jenkin Reid’s best-selling novel, Keough tells me, “I would love to but I don’t know if it’s in the cards…I haven’t heard anything.”
The series followed Daisy Jones (Keough) and her bandmates as they make their way through the Los Angeles music scene of the 1970s. The series premiered just over a year ago to positive reviews. Keough and Morrone earned Emmy nominations as did the show for outstanding limited or anthology series.

“Sic semper tyrannis!” With these words John Wilkes Booth fled Ford’s Theatre in Washington, D.C. after shooting Abraham Lincoln in the head with a 44 caliber derringer on April 14, 1865, altering the course of history and prompting a 12-day manhunt that ended when Sgt. [This story contains spoilers from the two-part season premiere of Manhunt.]
In an era of TV police and crime series like CSI and The Killing, using the forensic investigation of a crime scene, including DNA and fingerprints, to help find a killer and solve a murder is commonplace.
So Monica Beletsky, the creator of Apple TV+’s Manhunt miniseries, had a challenge when adapting the pursuit of Abraham Lincoln’s killer as a true-crime detective thriller, because Lincoln’s assassination in 1865, and the 12-day hunt for John Wilkes Booth that followed, took place well before real-life forensic science and the gathering of evidence at crime scenes had been established.
“I love the idea of, how do you find this needle in a haystack, this man who could be anywhere in North America, when you don’t have a phone, you don’t have cars or video cameras? There’s no 24-hour news,” Beletsky explains to the The Hollywood Reporter.

You think you know… but you have no idea. That might be the memorable tagline of MTV’s 2000s-era docuseries “Diary,” but it applies to Apple TV+’s newest program, too.
The seven-episode ”Manhunt” tells the incredible story of the search for John Wilkes Booth (portrayed by Irish actor Anthony Boyle) in the aftermath of the assassination of President Abraham Lincoln (Hamish Linklater). The limited series, of which the first two episodes are now streaming, is adapted from James L. Swanson’s book “Manhunt: The 12-Day Chase for Lincoln’s Killer,” and while it’s a historical drama, it’s anything but dry. Described by Apple as a conspiracy thriller about one of America’s best known but least understood crimes, the show also has a perfectly deployed sense of humor, making it more than meets the eye.

It’s possible to divide American history into two eras: before the assassination of President Abraham Lincoln and after. Before John Wilkes Booth fatally shot Lincoln at a performance of “Our American Cousin” at Ford’s Theater on April 15, 1865, assassination simply wasn’t a part of the national conscience. For all the political disputes of America’s 18th and early 19th centuries, straight up killing the other guy wasn’t seen as a possibility, let alone an option. Lincoln’s murder marked the transition to an America where, mathematically speaking, 9% of all sitting Presidents have been assassinated. And they say logging is a dangerous job.
The TV show “Manhunt” on Apple TV+, premiering March 15, tells the story of how Booth evaded capture for twelve days after killing Lincoln, but it’s also a dramatization of the first few weeks of the post-assassination era of American history — the era in which we live today.

Anthony Boyle first heard of John Wilkes Booth, the actor who assassinated President Abraham Lincoln, on “The Simpsons”. The 29-year-old Irish actor reminisces about the episode: “It’s an episode where Bart is playing John Wilkes Booth and Milhouse is playing Abraham Lincoln and he turns around and says ‘Oh no, John Wilkes Booth,’ and Bart pops a cap in his ass and says hasta la vista baby which left a real imprint on my brain.” It’s funny that years later Boyle, like Bart Simpson himself, is now playing John Wilkes Booth on Apple TV’s “Manhunt,” out on March 15. He jokes that he tried to improv “eat my shorts” a couple times but that didn’t fly.
The miniseries follows Secretary of War Edwin Stanton (Tobias Menzies) after Lincoln’s assassination and the 12 day hunt for Booth based on James L. Swanson’s book of the same name.

Plot: Based on the Edgar Award-winning non-fiction book from author James L. Swanson, “Manhunt” is a conspiracy thriller about one of the best known but least understood crimes in history, the astonishing story of the hunt for John Wilkes Booth in the aftermath of Abraham Lincoln’s assassination.
Review: The life and untimely death of Abraham Lincoln have been fodder for film and television since the invention of the medium. Before that, books and stage plays told the story of the President who ended the Civil War, abolished slavery, and died unceremoniously. But, in all of the tales of Honest Abe and his killer, John Wilkes Booth, few have chronicled the tumultuous aftermath between Ford’s Theater and the capture of those who perpetrated the heinous murder. Aside from Robert Redford’s The Conspirator, which focused on the trial of Booth’s accomplices, we have never gotten a full retelling of the events.
