Exclusive: Sky Studios has denied that it is piloting a Hugh Bonneville comedy about slavery amid a backlash from Black creatives on social media.
The Comcast-owned European studio said Forty Acres depicts Bonneville’s character reflecting on the genesis of his “generational wealth” and is “categorically not a comedy about slavery.”
The working title is, however, a play on a failed Civil War reparations program known as “40 acres and a mule.” Forty acres happens to be the size of the estate owned by Bonneville’s character.
Sky has not formally announced the project, but it was reported on by the British Comedy Guide. The publication initially said the pilot, penned by Wonka and Hijack star Rufus Jones, was about “historic slavery.” The story has since been updated to say Forty Acres is about “Britain’s murky colonial legacy.”
British Comedy Guide‘s original piece sparked criticism on Twitter (now X). London Hughes,...

Since its conception and rise to international acclaim, the multi-award-winning Have You Heard George’s Podcast? has transcended any genre. In this gripping new chapter titled After Empire, George The Poet presents a compelling exploration of African history through the lens of Cold War intrigue; a true crime saga weaving in poetry, music and archive footage with George’s characteristically stylish and soulful storytelling.
Coinciding with Black History Month, George takes a deep dive into the African independence movements of the 1960s, telling poignant tales of struggle and sacrifice that have framed some of the most important and least discussed events of the last six decades, from the perspective of some of history’s unsung heroes.
We travel in time to hear stories about fascinating people like Patrice Lumumba, the independence leader and the first prime minister of the Democratic Republic of the Congo and Kwame Nkrumah, Ghana’s first president.

To cap off a particularly hellacious year, Prince Harry and Meghan Markle gifted us the first episode of their Archewell Audio podcast on Dec. 29. Throughout the episode, which was a 2020 holiday special, we heard from the likes of Stacey Abrams, Christina Adane, José Andrés, Brené Brown, Rachel Cargle, Deepak Chopra, James Corden, Matt Haig, Elton John, Hussain Manawer, Naomi Osaka, Tyler Perry, and George the Poet. While the episode's quotes about 2020 were at times both uplifting and reflective, the true highlight came at the end when Harry and Meghan shared a sweet moment with their 1-year-old son, Archie. "Archie, is it fun?" Meghan asked before Harry had him repeat "Happy New Year" with a giggle. Listening to the three of them laughing, along with Archie's slightly English accent, is a sound we'll keep coming back to when we need a pick-me-up.

George Mpanga wanted to make a TV show. Looking to expand his conscious-growing work as the internationally recognized musician and spoken word artist George the Poet, he wanted to bring those talents to a new venue.
He was told he didn’t have the requisite experience. So he took on a new challenge: Take all of the current affairs-centered ideas he wanted to bring to sociology and humanities students and transfer them to an audio setting.
“Embedded deep in the logic of how we approach the podcast and the soundscape is a kind of stubbornness and determination to show that we can make visual some very elaborate ideas, with or without a production credit,” Mpanga told IndieWire.
So along with producer, composer, and songwriter Paul Carter, who works under the name Benbrick, they set out to tackle the principals of episodic storytelling with a podcast of their own. Together, the...

Prince Harry attended the Sentebale Audi charity concert at Surrey's Hampton Court Palace on Tuesday evening following his meeting with the Prime Minister of Nepal. Sentebale is the Duke of Sussex's charity, which he set up with his good friend Prince Seeiso of Lesotho in 2006, and means "forget me not" in the Sesotho language. The concert aimed to raise funds and awareness for young people affected by HIV and AIDS in southern Africa and featured special performances by Rita Ora, George the Poet, Inala, Morena Leraba, and the B Positive Choir. The 34-year-old prince looked handsome as always as he flashed a few smiles in a navy blazer and gray trousers.
